Powerbook 2400 and USB Card Support

I have a Powerbook 2400 with a PCMCIA slot. I also have a Belkin USB Adapter for the slot that works fine with a Powerbook G3. I also must run Mac OS 8.6 because of an old program I use everyday. The 2400 slot works with a modem card so I know it is not defective.
I downloaded Apple's USB Card Support 1.4.1, which allows the USB card support in pre 9.0 Macs. The notes say it will work with any PowerPC Mac. When I try to install it on the 2400, the window comes up saying this card suppot software is not supported on this machine. It works fine on the G3 running 8.6.
Is there any work around so that I can use this card in the 2400?
Thanks,
cjpmac

The dialogue box "...USB DDK..." went away with your instructions for including "usbx", BUT the 2400 froze on restart.
I removed the "usbx" version of the USB Support Extension and went back to the USB Support Extension without "usbx". I restarted and it came up without the dialogue box. (?????). No freezing. So the dialogue box problem was solved.
With the old (non "usbx" support extension) installed, I inserted my Belkin USB card. I then inserted the little Memorex USB in the left slot of the two slot card spaces and it didn't work. I inserted it into the right slot and the little light on the Memorex flashed and the icon came upon the desktop. Hurray!!!
Success!
I am a bit confused by all of this.
1. With Plan B, it took code inserted into the resource window, "usbx" (pardon me if I use the wrong terms here) to get rid of the dialogue box (DDK) which came up on all restarts.
2. That froze the 2400.
3. Replacing it with the original USB Support Extension (without "usbx") allowed the 2400 to restart without freezing or the dialogue box.
4. BUT my hardware Belkin card seems to mount USB drives on the right USB slot only.
Anyway it seems to be working, and you guys are phenomenal. My PC using husband is totally impressed by what you have been able to help me do. And I am reminded of how much fun it used to be to do this kind of stuff on my old Macs when we could still work with the extension folder.
Do you have any further analysis on this, otherwise I'll close it out as question answered? Bless you!

  • Sun Ray, windows & and USB card readers

    Hi all,
I read, or was told that the new version of the SR software (version 5) should enable more USB devices to work in combination with Sun Ray.
We currently serve our users with windows via SunRay - and it works very well. The only issue being that we need to get usb card readers - such as the acr38 to work with SunRay. Until now this has not worked. Does anyone know whether this is currently possible or whether this should be possible using SR 5?
    thanks and regards,
    Paul

    Hi,
Do you provide terminal server desktop or a VDI based 'XP' desktop to your users ?
the next early access release (EA2) will support additional USB support; it seems only for VDI based 'xp' desktops; so that might solve your USB card reader request if you provide XP desktops.
The current PC/SC release does support some kind of second card reader attached to the sunray. Never looked indepth into this feature but i did see it read the card from the additional reader with the added debug tools.
Do you actually need this second card reader? Maybe you could use the PC/SC passthrough to windows to read the your card in the windows backend losing the second card reader.
if all else fails you could try a network USB hub. This device is attached to the network and your reader is attached to the device. Then you use a client on the windows environment to connect to the device; hence connect to your USB reader. The client on the windows environment that works with the device i've tested was only able to run just once on a terminal server.. so this is not a very scaleable solution if you run terminal server.
    regards,
    Patrick

Your notebook has three usb 3.0 ports. Have you connected a device that draws more than 100mA to one of the ports? That could overload the port and make it inoperative.  Some ports can be limited to 50 mA. It depends on the notebook's systemboard design. High power usb devices that are optionally powered by an external power supply should always be used with an external power supply. There are limits to the power capacity of the traces on the notebook's systemboard.

  • Photoshop CS is a Powerbook application and isn't supported in Lion

Is there anything I can do? I just bought a new MacBook Pro today because my MacBook Air (Snow Leopard) is having problems (my fault), and I discover that Photoshop application (CS1) doesn't work in Lion. I can't afford to buy another Photoshop and I only use it for my own personal use, not for work or anything, and the CS1 version has been excellent for that over the years. I am really disappointed by this, and I really did not want to change operating systems for this reason (because of compatibility issues arising).
Is there any program like Rosetta that I can install? I don't know much about Lion. I am familiar with Snow Leopard as I've used it for three years and it has been really good, no compatibility issues with programs from my old Powerbook.
If I can't use Photoshop that will mean a lot of decrease in the quality of the utility of using this new computer. I wish I had bought a second hand MacBook Pro or something like that with Snow Leopard on it. As I've said I've had VERY few issues with Snow Leopard.
There are other applications that are cheap or free that I can use instead of PS but I have gotten used to PS and I don't really want to learn how to use another application.
Is it possible to use PS by sticking the external hard drive with the backup of Snow Leopard stuff from the MacBook into the USB port of the new computer and then using it that way? I can move files I need to work on over to the external drive.

I tried to get an upgrade. I was told in an email that it's not possible to upgrade to CS 4 or 5 from CS1. I wasted a lot of time trying to upgrade because on the Adobe website, they say it's possible but you can't find the upgrade. I spent two days trying to buy and download the upgrade, and then sent an email to Adobe support. That was their reply.

  • DSL-2750B and USB Printer Support

I just got a DSL-2750B modem/router. In the specs on this page it says it supports a USB Printer:
    https://teleproducts.verizon.com/fileshare/plm/brochure/DL2750BVOL_brochure.pdf
On the D-Link Site the manual for this router shows screens to configure it. but those screens don't match the screens I get when I log in to the router. The ones on the router are all branded with Verizon.
If I open the Verizondrive icon showing up in my network I see a folder for Drives and one for Printers.  I have tested a USB drive in the USB port on the router, but can't configre a USB printer.
I have talked/chatted with the DSL support folks and they can't help. They told me I had to go to premium support and pay for the call.  That doesn't seem right that I have to pay for information on how to configure a device you sold me for a feature that your web site says the device has.
Please tell me how to configure a usb printer for this DSL-2750B

  • FW 400 and USB card suggestions for MP?

I'm in the process of setting up my 2009 Mac Pro nehalem. I foolishly thought this MP came with a FW 400 port. But it doesn't.
My peripherals are a FW 400 external drive, a ratoc scsi adapter (fw 400 I think) and I'd also like to add in a few more USB ports. 2-4 would be ideal.
SO... any suggestions for an affordable PCI card and suggested places online to get one? I get totally confused looking online and need help.
I take it the FW adapts from 6 pin to 9 pin for the Mac Pro?
    Thanks for any suggestions!

OWC best place to start and see what they offer, then go from there.

I did this years ago when I had a PM6500 running 8.6 & added a USB PCI card, but know I didn't have the problem you are having.
When I downloaded from the link you provided, I got this file USBCard_Support1.4.1.smi.bin. After using Stuffit Expander, I got this file +USB Card Support 1.4.1.smi+, which is the installer. I don't have a Mac running 8.6, so I can't try the install.
Suggest you do this. Put the smi.bin file in a folder on your desktop & then uncompress using Stuffit. This will yeild the .sim file. Then double click the .sim file. Did you get the message "+Please insert the disc: USB Adapter Card Support+" when you double clicked the .sim file? Or some other file?
When you downloaded the smi.bin file did you use a Mac or a PC & then put on a Zip disc? What computer did you use to uncompress to get the .sim file?

  • How to install USB card in Mac OS 8.6?

Recently, i buy a new printer. the printer only can use USB connection. My MAC is MAC 8500/1800. It is no USB port. i added a USB card. But it is not work. I find information on internet. It need installed a software(USBSupport1.4.1smi.bin). I downloaded the software. But it can not open. i hope some people can help to solve the problem.
Thank you very much for your help.

    Hello tytom2003,
    Welcome, and Happy New Year!
First, make sure your printer and USB card are Mac compatible.
Second, you will probably have to re-install your Operating System in order for your Mac to "see" your USB card. You cannot install the proper USB and USB support extensions by downloading them, because your Operating System will not "see" them, will not recognise them.
You should perform a "clean reinstall" (also known as "archive and install") from your original installation CD - or from a retail, full install CD, with the USB card installed in its PCI slot. Your Mac will now automatically "see" or recognise the USB card, and will see the need to install the USB extensions.
By doing a "clean install", you will have a newly installed System Folder and the old, disabled 'Previous System Folder' next to it. You will not lose anything, as all your old applications and documents will be saved in the 'Previous System Folder' where you may retrieve them and drag them over to your new System Folder.
I assume you are running OS 8.6, but it doesn't really matter. The OS CD will install the correct USB extensions. (An OS9 CD might install 1.4.6 extensions - whatever it installs should work).
I did not have your exact model, but rather a 7300 and several beige G3s, but the procedure is all the same.
It is also possible to do a 'Custom Install' or install by 'Tome Viewer' utility.
Let us know if it works.
I hope to have been of some help. It will have been an honour.

  • Sleep issue and USB 2.0 card

I recently installed an Allego 2.0 USB card, recommended by Apple, into my G4 1.25 Dual. The card works great but now I cannot put the computer to sleep. Whether by button or command the monitor goes dark but the G4 is still awake plus I can't bring it back without a cold boot. Tech support said this was an issue, offered some tips and said if all fails get a different card. I bought Iomega's as an experiement and same problem! Anybody else have this issue and could you solve it?
    Thanks.
    Bill

    Hi Joe,
Yes, my mac usually sleeps just fine. My own sleep is another issue but that is for another forum.
A couple of years ago I was on another forum and saw a post claiming a fully functional usb2 card for $9. I bought it and it worked slick as could be. It was a no name, no box, no instructions, bare card but the price was good and it came with a usb2 cable. I then posted as many times as I could to others about that site and the card. About a year later the link broke and I went back to the site. The had a card that looked the same, had the same chipset, and was the same price but the manufacturer had changed some components. The second card did not work as well as the first.
Since then the same thing has happened to all of the makers of usb 2 cards. Something on the card changes and breaks sleep. It's not your fault. It's not the vendor's fault, it is the manufacturers fault. By the way, the manufacturers are usually not the name you see on the box. Companies buy from a manufacturer and slap their lable on the box.
Keep trying and you will eventually find one.
One guy went so far as to pay Belkin extra money for one of the older cards but it worked.

  • Not recognising USB card reader and also PhotoBooth issue

    Hi,
I'm a new member and a bit of a numpty when it comes to Mac (new owner).
My Macbook Pro is giving me some grief tonight and I have 2 separate (i think) issues.
It will not recognise my USB card reader. It worked fine last week and I did eject it properly before removing it. I've tried the card reader on a PC and it is working fine....
Also when I go to open Photo Booth it tells me that my camera is not connected or in use by another program. But as you know the camera is built in!?!?!
I'd be very grateful for any thoughts on how I might fix the problems. The nearest Mac store is 2 hours away....
    Many thanks in advance

  • Token and smart card reader are not detected on Mavericks if not plugged on a USB port during system boot

Well, both token and smart card reader are not detected on OS X 10.9 if not plugged on a USB port during system boot. So, if I am already working within the system and need to use my certificates I have to plug the token or smart card reader on a USB port and restart Mavericks.
Token is a GD Starsign and Smart Card Reader is a SCR3310 v2.
    Thoughts?

SCS is a very good app, since I've read that Apple has discontinued support for PC/SC interfaces after the release of Mountain Lion.
(My previous installation was a Mavericks upgrade from Lion)
However, I don't know what and how to debug using Smart Card Services. Do you know any commands to use?
Apparently, the SC reader reports no issues: the LED is blinking blue when no smart card is present and becomes fixed blue when a smart card is inserted – according to the manuals, this shows that there is correct communication between the OS and the CCID reader.
I don't know what to do; I'm beginning to hypothesize it's a digital signer issue. In fact, my smart card only supports one application called File Protector (by Actalis) to officially sign digital documents. This application seems to have major difficulties in identifying the miniLector EVO.
The generic and ambiguous internal error comes when I try to manually identify the peripheral.
Athena CNS is one of the Italian smart cards and is automatically recognized and configured (so it's correct – no doubts about this), while "ACS ACR 38U-CCID 00 00" seems to be the real name of the miniLector.
(I'm assuming this because System Information also returns that the real manufacturer is ACS... bit4id is a re-brander)
However, when I click on it and then tap OK, it returns internal error.
As first attempt, I would try to completely erase&clean File Protector files to try a reinstall. Then, if this still doesn't work, I'd debug using the terminal.
    So:
    - Do you know any applications to 100% clean files created by an installer?
    - Do you have in mind any solutions that I might have forgotten?
Thanks in advance from an OS X fan!

  • USB ports and memory card slots not working

My Pavilion a6120n desktop has worked brilliantly ever since I purchased it. As of last week the 2 usb ports in the front and the 2 unused usb ports in the back have stopped working. My printer is plugged into one rear port and my wireless mouse is plugged into a second rear port and these work fine.  I generally use a memory stick for data swapping or the card reader slots (which have also stopped working). I no longer see the memory card icons in the "Computer" window. When installing something new the "New Hardware Found" statement pops up but the driver install always fails. I think it is a software issue but there are no usb drivers to download on the HP/support site that I can find. . . so . . . Below is what I have tried so far.Run antivirus software. Full scan & memory scan - no issuesRun malewarebytes full scan - no issues I have tried restarting several times with no success. Restore to several previous restore points = failedRestarting computer in repair mode = failedRun the repair disk that I had made = failedChecked the power management for each usb port to see if the power was routed properly = okRemoved the case cover and carefully inspected the wiring and connectors.finally I tried uninstalling the usb drivers = failed  Upon restarting the computer the last time the startup file must have failed and after several hours of attempting a repair I had to reinstall the Window 7 completely. Still no usb or memory card function. Any help would be appreciated Thanks,MrBob38

  • USB and Media Card Reader disabled after installing DM

I installed the DM 4.3 from the CD tonight. Hooked up the BB and everything worked fine. Loaded some music onto the media card and downloaded some pictures. Then I unhooked to see if the music was on the Blackberry, when I hooed it back up, it wouldn't recognize. I tried a few times, then uninstalled the software, re-installed, still nothing, then un-installed and downloaded 4.7 and installed, still nothing, now my computer doesn't recognize ANY USB ports (web-cam, Media Center Remote) and none of the Media Card reader drives are visible in My Computer. When I insert the SD card from my camera, nothing. I uninstalled 4.7 and still nothing. Now I'm worried..
Please tell me that I don't have to wipe the whole computer and start again.. Please!!

  • Audio / Sound Card not working after Soundblaster.USB.Audio.Support.pkg

Ok, first - confess - it was stupid. I installed the Soundblaster.USB.Audio.Support.pkg package, which i downloaded from the internet, to make the harman Kardon Soundsticks (USB-Version) working, as nothing happened when plugging them in.
First, it ruined the mouse working after reboot and also disabled the internal sound card, not even as device available anymore. I fixed the mouse problem by installing IOUSBFamily-281.4.0-log(PPC).dmg
How can I make the sound card be available and working again ? I also updated to 10.4.11. Did not help ! Can you ? Thanks !

    Welcome to the Apple discussions.
First, look in system preferences, accounts, and for your login account look at login items to see if there is a Soundblaster USB module that is loaded when you reboot your system. Delete it if there is one.
If you updated to 10.4.11 by software update, download the combo update from http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/macosx_updates/macosx10411comboupdat eppc.html . The combo update is a complete update for all updates to 10.4, and installing the combo sometimes fixes odd things.

  • Seeking reliable firewire and usb 2.0 combo cardbus card

Subject line says it all, or mostly so. I have an IoGear GUF202 pcmcia card with two USB 2.0 ports, one six-pin FireWire port, and one four-pin FireWire port. Its USB 2.0 services are not reliable; sustained transfers freeze my 1Ghz Titanium PowerBook G4. I've seen online several other cards from different manufacturers with the same form factor, but haven't yet found one with the preferred NEC chipset for USB services.
Can anyone offer a recommendation -- and a source? Swapping separate FireWire and USB 2.0 PC cards is becoming a pain.

    Hi Jamie,
Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot.
The usual reason why updates fail or mess things up, is if Permissions are not fixed before & after every update, with a reboot... you may get a partial update when the installer finds it doesn't have Permissions to change one obscure little part of the OS, leaving you with a mix of OS versions.
Some people get away without Repairing Permissions for years, some for only days.
If Permissions are wrong before applying an update, you could get mixed OS versions, if Directory is the slightest messed up, who knows!
If many Permission are repaired, or any Directory errors are found, you may need to re-apply some the latest/biggest updates.
