Powerbook 400mhz-Upgrade Questions

Hello!
It Has Been A While Since I Have Posted Here. I Am Helping A Friend Upgrade A New Used Computer. More Specificly, a 400mhz Powerbook G4 Titanium. His buget is up to $250, But The Lower The Better. He Would Like To Upgrade His Hardrive To Atleast 60GB. Does Anyone Here Have Any Input On Drives and Instalation?
Many Thanks In Advance,

PowerBook G4 15"   Mac OS X (10.3)

Use the guide here for fitting, any drive from a well-known manufacturer will work. Get at least a 5,400rpm/8Mb cache one if the budget will stretch - although you will get more capcity for less money on a 4,200rpm drive.
I'd go for somewhere around 80Gb/5,400rpm/8Mb like this one, I've had good experiences with Fujitsu drives in the past but at the time I wanted a 120Gb they didn't do one. NewEgg are a highly regarded supplier in the US so you shouldn't have any problems.
Good Luck.

  • PowerBook G4 upgrade question

    I own a Apple PowerBook G4 running 10.4.11
    Machine Model: PowerBook5,7
    CPU Type: PowerPC G4 (1.2)
    Number Of CPUs: 1
    CPU Speed: 1.67 GHz
L2 Cache (per CPU): 512 KB
    Memory: 2 GB
    Bus Speed: 167 MHz
    Boot ROM Version: 4.9.1f3
    Manufactured: 07/2005
    - What is the life cycle for OS X 10.4 and are security patches still being developed by Apple?
    - I know OS X 10.6 will not run on this PowerBook because it does not have the Intel processor, is 10.5 still available for purchase? How will 10.5 run on my hardware configuration?
    Thanks

Remember, even if a security issue was found with 10.5, it doesn't necessarily mean it was there with 10.4. So even if Apple doesn't release a security patch for 10.4 again, don't assume that this means 10.4 is any more insecure than 10.5 with a security patch.
It is possible that 10.5 and 10.6 introduced new security issues not present with 10.4, and thus why the security update is only relevant for 10.5 and 10.6.
Unless you are working in the trenches, and see an issue which needs to be addressed, don't let the lack of a security update make you think that security will be necessarily an issue for these older operating systems once the patches stop coming out. There are things you can do to improve your own security as outlined in my FAQ*:
    http://www.macmaps.com/upgradefaq.html#SECURITY
and these do not require updating at all.

Security upgrade question - I have a 4S phone v6.01 with an upgrade to IOS 7.04 already downloaded and ready for install.  I would like to install the 6.1.6 security upgrade instead. How do I delete the ios7 in the queue or have the 6.1.1 pushed as an option to the phone?

You can't install iOS 6.1.6 on that device and must update it to 7.0.6.

No you can not use an AirPort Extreme card with your PowerBook.
Your PowerBook G4 400 MHz requires the original AirPort card.

  • Ti Powerbook Internal Battery Question

    Folks,
I have a Ti Powerbook (400Mhz) and it has been stored for some time. When I tried to turn it on it would not start up. I have tried to recharge the internal battery, recharge the primary battery (which did not charge at ALL), reset the PMU and zap the PRAM. None of these things have worked and the computer still won't start. i am assuming from these things that the internal battery is dead. Can someone please tell me: 1.) where exactly the internal battery is located (I believe it is under the optical drive) ? 2.) How hard of an install a new battery would be (I'm pretty handy with a screwdriver) ? 3.) Can I buy a replacement battery at Radio Shack or the like? I would very much like to get this computer up and running for my fiance who is considering a switch from a......GULP.....Dell laptop. Thanks in advance for the help.
Powerbook   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   None

Hi, epotkano, and welcome to Apple Discussions. When you tried to recharge the internal backup battery, did you do so without the main battery in place? If not, do. The backup battery is often resilient enough to come back to life and take a charge even when both batteries have been drained so long that the main battery defies resurrection, but it may only happen if the dead main battery is removed. If after 24 hours of attempted charging with the main battery removed, the Tibook still won't start, disconnect the backup battery's wire leads and try again. If the PB then starts up, the backup battery should be replaced. If it doesn't, the backup battery is not the problem — or not the only problem.
The backup battery module resides directly under the right wrist rest, above the slot-loading optical drive. You must remove the keyboard, the lower case (bottom panel) and the DVD drive to get to it. It isn't hard. The module (here's a picture) is a unit, though it contains several flat, disklike cells; if it has to be replaced, you replace the whole thing including its wire leads, not just the cells. It's only sold by specialty Mac parts dealers, and I notice that it's currently out of stock at iFixit. well that was a big waste of my time & data allowance then ...

  • Another RAM upgrade question

    Hi everyone,
I know there seems to be lots of RAM upgrade questions here but hey thats what forums are for.
    I'm looking to upgrade my macbook's RAM it's currently got 2GB (2x1GB)
Is it possible to purchase 1x4GB and put that with one of my current 1GB sticks to create a total of 5GB?
I would be interested to know if this is possible or if anyone has tried it.
    Thanks in advance
    Scott

This will work if your MacBook is late '07 or newer.

  • Powerbook G-4 17" upgrade question.

Hey folks...I'm looking for some upgrade advice on my 17" Powerbook.
When I purchased the computer I bought the biggest HD available - 80GB and now I'd like to upgrade that if I can.
I'm a video producer and need to get as much bang out of the computer to do HD editing....(FCP Studio 2) and don't know if I can "soup up" my computer enough...that's where your advice and guidance comes in. I'll look forward to any info you can send my way.
Computer specs: 1.5 GHz Power PC G-4 Processor; 1 GB DDR SDRAM; L2 Cache 512 KB per CPU w/ 1 CPU; Bus Speed 167MHz; 80GB Hard Drive.
Thanks in advance for your time and trouble!
    Cheers,
    R.C.

Thanks for the info guys! Much appreciated.
I followed the link to the HD and was a little bummed when I read the first review saying this drive, "works but is slow," and "lasted only 5 months." I've had an external Maxtor (Seagate) drive do that (lasted only 30 days) so this got me to look at all the reviews. I guess it's a crap-shoot....
Like the fact that I can upgrade to 2GB memory. Wonderin' if there's another manufacturer/make of that larger capacity HD...?
Thanks again guys for your quick response and your info!

  • Seeking help with software upgrade questions for my PowerBook G4

I am seeking help/advice for a very low tech guy. I upgraded my PowerBook G4 (ancient I know but I have trouble with our thow away society), to Leopard 10.5.2. However, my iDVD no longer works. I plan on upgrading to iLife'08, but based on the system requirements, I am not certain all of the features (i.e. iMovie'08) will work on my older processor. Before I upgrade to iLife, can anyone tell me if I should do it and if they will work on my all the features will work on my PowerBook G4?

Many prefer iLife'06 to '08, but we went from '05 to '08.
You are correct in that iMovie'08 will not run on your Book, but when you install iLife'08 you are given the opportunity to download iMovie'06 for free.
I can't vouch for it fixing your iDVD however.

  • HDD/RAM upgrade question - 400 mhz sawtooth

    Hello!
My Sister has a Sawtooth G4 - Well, I believe it's a sawtooth anyway. I don't know for sure, so I'll post a bunch of specs:
It's a 400mhz model, early 2000. It shipped with a 10GB HDD, and 128 RAM. I believe it also has a 100 Mbps Ethernet. It has a DVI and VGA monitor video card, but i'm not sure the Video RAM level. It has an internal FW 400 port as well. The internal Airport card is shot - er, maybe the extension.
It has major issues with the system - and it seems to stem from a botched OS 9.2 install. It's running 9.1, but with trouble. For one, I can't open the extension manager. For two, it's slow, and acts funny.
Well, I thought i'd be nice, and try to get the G4 working for my Sister. It seems that it may require an Clean install of OS 9.0. Oh well, I can do that easily enough. However, before I go through all that trouble, I'm contemplating upgrading the hard drive (at least). With only 10GB, it's not very useful for iTunes, Photoshop, or our old OS 9 games - things she'd like to have.
I looked at the specs for the Mac at:
    http://www.lowendmac.com/ppc/g4saw.shtml
It takes an 3.5 inch Ultra ATA drive? I've seen those around - and a 60GB drive or so is becoming pretty cheap. (I've seen 80G for under $50) I just figured i'd ask if anyone has tips on what to buy, how to install it, and Particularly if I need any special adapters for the G4. It does have a slot for a second internal HDD. I've also heard that a fast, second internal HDD can overheat the computer - is this a common issue I should be worried about?
The same questions go for the RAM. I'd like to add at least an extra 128MB, but I'm not entirely sure what to get. The above site mentions that it uses PC100 SDRAM in DIMM mode? Hmmm... I'll have to look around.
Please excuse any silly questions, I'm just far more familiar with more current systems, and it's 1 AM
    Thanks,
    Dan
PS: It looks to have a slot for a floppy drive under the DVD-ROM drive. I have a bunch of files on our OLD PowerBook 5300 that i'd like to move - but I need a floppy drive. Our old external USB floppy drive is.... very dead. The external floppy drives i've seen at stores seem to be pretty expensive, but internal drives are still fairly cheap (some under $30). How hard would it be to find/buy/install a compatible floppy drive? What format would it need to be? If such an upgrade runs over the $40-50 that a new USB drive costs, it's not really worth it.
    15" Powerbook G4 (May 2005 ed), iMac DV (9.2.2)   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   1G Ram, 192 (iMac)

    Wow, thanks again!
I figured out that this is the AGP graphics Sawtooth - not the Yikes model. Where do these names come from?
As per upgrading to OS X - we have a G5 which she can use, and a XP box - which is down with the flu for the third (or fourth?) time. Therefore, the G4 will stay OS 9. She just wants to have a reliable machine that can play DVDs and music, and play some of our old OS 9 games. It's not intended to run any new programs, just the old ones that she can't run now. When I mentioned photoshop - it's a "Limited edition" of version 5.0 - and it's far, far, FAR more reliable on the G4 than on our 2-year-old XP box, despite the G4 running 9.1 with a wimpy 128 meg ram!
The main reason for upgrading the HDD was to make it more practical for games and MP3s - via iTunes 2! It won't play AAC, but it plays MP3s fine. She has at least 8 Gig of music - too much for a 10G drive! (Even half of it leaves precious little expansion room)
I'm watching for a "small" HDD - it seems that our local Fry's is no longer selling anything smaller than 100G - which was $100! Or perhaps they were just sold out at the time. I'll keep an eye out for another sale. In fact, asking my friend for an old drive is a good idea. They have parts from at least a dozen old windows and linux boxes floating around - so they likely have a drive or two. If it's a used HDD, loaded with Windows (probably 95-2000), will it confuse the system before re-formatting?
    As per RAM:
I'm quite aware of the lack of RAM. However, I'll have to watch for sales! I'm not aware of any "Mom and Pop" stores close by, although that's a fantastic idea. A PC 133 128 MB card runs $40-50 at the local computer stores, but only $15 at OWC! Therefore, if I don't find suitable RAM locally, I'll order some. I wouldn't mind an extra 256 (or 512) for my iMac either.
Speaking of iMac - I've determined that it's the iMac DV Special ED from March 2000. (400mhz, originally 13 Gig Drive - now 60, 9.2.2) The question is whether or not it maxes out at 512 MB or 1 GB of RAM. One of the Apple support sites I found ( http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=58007 ) said that the slot loading iMacs max out at 512. It makes no distinction between any slot loading iMac. However at http://www.lowendmac.com/imacs/dvse.shtml, it mentions that this model specifically can accept 1 gig of RAM. I'll assume that the Apple article is correct, but I'd love to get a full 650 MB if I can! (I'd love to add a 512 to the 128 I have now)
It's amazing, really - after 4 years of constant use, a hard drive motor failure (hence the 60G HDD), and a year and a half burried on a desk, the iMac is becoming more handy by the day. It's good at capturing the Video and audio from say, Halo, while my PB's too busy to run anything else (via S-Video and audio through our DV cam). It makes a great DVD player, an iTunes Jukebox, and game machine - most of my games are still OS 9. To top it off, it makes a great wireless base-station for my Nintendo DS at school, where there's no WiFi! With 30 gig of space left on the HDD, it has plenty of room for whatever I want to do with it. Guess you can "teach and old dog new tricks!'
Well, I guess this means my question is answered for now - once I find the things I need, i may have some more questions, Thanks again!
    -Dan

  • Panther to tiger upgrade questions.

I am getting an upgrade from work so I can have Tiger.
Should I backup before upgrading? How?
And if it does not work out, how can I revert back to 10.3?
    Thanks~!

Should I backup before upgrading? How?
You should backup before installing anything new. You should backup before examining your machine for hardware or software trouble. You should backup after writing data that is important to you. Here's my backup FAQ*:
    http://www.macmaps.com/backup.html
If you follow my cloning instructions there, you can just clone back your backup if the 10.4 upgrade doesn't work.
To upgrade to 10.4 you'll need to at least double your RAM to have effective speed. You'll also want at least 10 GB of free hard disk space. My upgrade FAQ* explains other things you need to watch out for:
    http://www.macmaps.com/upgradefaq.html
P.S. Please note this is the PowerMac G4, for tower G4 computers, and not Powerbook G4 computer like in your profile. If indeed you have a Powerbook G4, and not a PowerMac G4, and I can't answer your question, please post further questions about it in the Powerbook forum that is relevant after identifying your computer using my FAQ*:

  • 1.5ghz 15" PowerBook RAM - 1gb Question

I just ordered a gig stick of the Samsung RAM for my powerbook. It is an older powerbook purchased about 8 months ago. Right now I have 2 sticks of 256 in it. My question for everyone is which slot I should put the gig stick in. Also, I plan on leaving one of the 256 in there to have a total of 1.25gb. Has anyone done this and/or had any problems with this configuration?

Well, yes if you're planning to replace the other 256 stick I suppose it might be helpful to swap them over now, though honestly it's no big deal whichever way you decide to do it. I understand your nervousness, but I can honestly say this is probably the easiest RAM to change of the 5 computers I've upgraded. The most important thing is to get yourself the right screwdriver then just look at the opened up bay in conjunction with the printed-out instructions until you're happy you know what's required. Also make sure you're happy which side of the memory module is "up" - look at the one you're about to take out first.
I found the Apple document as good as it needed to be. I'm sure you'll be fine - just remember to "discharge" yourself by touching something metal before you start. Good Luck

  • K8N Diamond & VGA Upgrade Question

My video card took a dump on me this weekend.  I cannot afford much at all and I need help from you guys.
I have been 100% MSI only boards ever since I started building pc's.  I have never owned an Intel Chip and don’t plan to start any changes any time soon here...
When my ATI 9800 PRO with 256  died I started researching a replacement.  AGP cards are still big $$$$
I was looking at an  nVidia 7800GS as a replacement for around $300 but then noticed that the nVidia 6600GT was a step up above my 9800 and it was PCIe.
I currently run an K7N Delta L mobo with an AMD XP 1.8Ghz CPU and the board  has NO PCIe slot.
Would I be better off buying an K8N/CPU combo here:
    http://www.partspc.com/ProductDetails.asp?CatID=71&ProdID=17501
    For $325
and the  nVIDA 66GT PCIe card for $100 ??
The thing old me back would be how much crap I can take off my old PC would work on this new board.
A.) Would my 2 1gig sticks of DDR 400Mhz Ram work from my K7N Delta board on the K8N board?
B.) would my Enermax 350W PSU be enough juice for this board and Video card?
Replacing the board and cpu and video card is $125 out of my budget, but I am wondering if perhaps it is worth it now,... allowing me to "upgrade" to better CPU and video card down the road when I have extra money.
AMD 64 is 64bit right? So would it be best to run windows xp 64bit version or stay with a windows XP pro.
I just need advice if any of you have time.  Thanks.

I've only built one system so far, but if there's an item that you shouldn't go cheap on, it's the PSU.  I built my system last fall, so I have no idea how PSU's have changed, but I read up on tomshardware.com and anandtech.com, which had some good articles on PSUs.  I would go for a good 24 pin ATX v 2.0 with at least two SATA connectors.  I went with a Fortron Blue Storm 500W.  It's not the absolute best, but the specs are good, the price was $89.00 on newegg.com and it did well in the tomshardware torture test.
No advice on the video card, since those change regularly.  I went with an ATI brand Radeon X800XL, which at the time, had a good price/performance ratio and 16 pipelines.  It was $260 after a rebate at compusa at the time and is much cheaper now.  Right after that the 7900 line came out from nVidia and all bets were off.  I like ATI brand for ATI cards because when my 9800 with an R350 core failed after I installed an Arctic Silencer, ATI sent me a new card with an R360 core no questions asked even after I told them I pulled the chipset fan off.  Based on that experience, much as I do with HP for printers, I'd probably stick with an ATI card even where there are great nVidia based cards.  I'd rather deal with a company across the border than in the Far East.  I waited for a Crossfire based board to come out and given the fact that the video cards don't have to match, I would have opted for an MSI version of that over SLI.  I never though SLI made much sense unless you were prepared to buy two cards at the same time.  I would follow the advice of the other people on which video card to buy.  Read up a bit and you'll make the best choice for you and your budget.
FYI--Scalable Link Interface or SLI, allows two identical nVidia based cards to share the task of generating the video image.  Initially at 8X when in SLI, nVidia upped the ante to 16X on both when in that mode.  Crossfire is the equivalent for ATI-based cards but doesn't require two identical video cards.  When I built my system, I agonized about whether to get SLI, but since I had no intention of buying two video cards at the same time and Crossfire wasn't available, I went with one card.  I looked at specs at two 6800GTs in SLI aren't going to outperform a 7900GTX.  Two 7900GTX's--well, that's a different matter, a different PSU and a different budget, entirely.

  • Windows 2003 SP2 upgrade question in regards to OSS 30478

We are currently running our production system on a windows 2003 sp1 two-node cluster with SQL 2005.
I would like to get it upgraded to SP2, but I have a question on OSS note 30478.
There is a sentence in there stating:
-Special features with Service Packs for Windows Server 2003 in the cluster:
Service Pack 2: Before you import Support Package on platform x86_64, you must replace SAP resource DLL on both cluster nodes with the most current version.
Can someone elaborate on "replace SAP resources DLL on both cluster nodes"?
Does that just mean I need to upgrade the Kernel to the latest version?
It seems to be a fairly bold statement with very vague instructions.  Anyways any guidance would be appreciated.

  • Satellite L50-A-19N HDD upgrade question

    Hi,
I would like to upgrade the standard HGST HDD to a faster Seagate SSHD, and the problem is that in this model L50-A-19N there is no HDD cover, the whole laptop bottom must be removed like in this Link: [Video|http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IG0lW7t92bI]
My question is can I upgrade the Disk by Myself and if not what can I do to replace the Disk not losing the warranty. I read the manual for this model and there is nothing about HDD upgrades there.
    Regards.

Usually on most notebook models HDD is placed at the bottom and access to it is not complicated. As you can see on your notebook model it is not so easy and HDD exchange is not supported. With other words it should not be done by notebook owner.
Valid warranty is very important so please don't do anything on your own. HDD exchange in your case can be done by authorized service provider. If they do this warranty will not be cancelled.
Contact nearest Toshiba service provider and ask for help. Addresses and phone numbers you can find on http://www.toshiba.eu/innovation/generic/ASP_SUPPORT/
    Good luck
