PowerBook 45W AC Adapter vs. 65W AC Adapter

I just purchased a 1.25 GHz aluminum PowerBook and it uses the 65W AC adapter. I also have a spare 45W AC adapter from an older PowerBook. Is it safe to use the 45W adapter on this PowerBook? Or will it damage the adapter or possibly even the PowerBook. My gut feeling is that a lower power adapter shouldn't damage the computer or the adapter, but I don't want to take any chances.

You may be able to use the 45W adapter, but it probably won't provide enough power to charge the Albook's battery while the Albook is running. That's what happens when you use a 45W adapter with one of the later Tibooks that came with 65W adapters. I don't know (because I haven't tried this) whether the Power Management Unit is likely to be confused by the substitution.

  • Hey, does anyone make a PowerBook-to-magsafe adapter?

Hey, does anyone make a PowerBook-to-magsafe adapter? I have five power supplies for my old PowerBook G4 that I would love to use on my new MacBook so that I don't have to go out and buy five more power adapters. The adapter would be a female to accept the PowerBook connector (RCA-type connector with the 1/8" mini-type inner shaft) to the new magsafe end. How about parts? I'll build it myself!

"I question your ability to fashion a magnetic connector with spring-loaded contacts."
Obviously. I am not talking about constructing a Magsafe connector. I am talking about wiring a Magsafe connector to a PowerBook G4 power supply. With the proper parts I or anyone with cabling skills and the correct wiring diagram could easily construct an adapter to use between the PowerBook G4 supply and the MacBook.

  • Help using powerbook as wireless adapter for Xbox 360

Ok I need help partially opening my NAT. I have a Linksys WRT54G. And I play on Xbox Live a lot. The other day I moved the xbox into my living room where our new tv is and then I hooked my G4 Powerbook up to the xbox and did internet sharing because I have no internet connection in there besides wireless. Whenever I use a wired connection on the xbox is says my NAT is open. But whenever I use my laptop it says my NAT is Moderate, and it makes it hard to get into any games. I don't want to chip out the money for a $100 microsoft adapter because I will rarely play xbox in their. So how do I go about opening up the NAT the rest of the way.
http://www.ofzenandcomputing.com/zanswers/61 there is how I did it, but I setup the xbox with a static IP
On my router I have ports 88 and 3074 open which make the NAT open on wired connection. So I am thinking I may need to open those ports on the laptop itself? I am not sure if I can open ports on the laptop for outgoing connections.
    Thanks for the help!

A wireless router is a device which requires its own wired internet connection. A wireless router is not a wireless access point like the Linksys WAPs. A wireless router does not connect wireless to other wireless routers/APs with standard Linksys firmware. With Linksys firmware you need a WAP54G or similar. The WAPs support wireless bridging and repeater mode.
If you already have a WRT54GL then you have to install a 3rd party firmware which adds wireless bridging capabilities. Read the wikipedia article on "WRT54G" for information about which WRT models support 3rd party firmware and an overview of projects and links.
Remember, however, that you may brick your router if you install a 3rd party firmware incorrectly and you probably void the warranty if you install 3rd party firmware (it is even possible to find out after you restore the original Linksys firmware if you don't clear the NVRAM before).

  • Best replacement for G4 Powerbook Titanium AC adapter?

    Hi all,
My AC adapter has gone kaput, and I am looking for a replacement. (Don't have AppleCare Protection). They are selling for $79 at the Apple Store, and there's a few on eBay. But, I found this generic thing over at macally.com
Does anyone have experience with the macally power adapter? Is it trustworthy?
    TIA-
    Matt

My preferences are for Seagate and Hitachi drives due to the reliability I've had, especially with Seagate, in 10+ years. However other people here have expressed preferences for Samsung and/or Western Digital. There have also been plenty of people against Toshiba drives (many reports of drive failures).
Not all drives offer the same features. For example, some have shock protection whilst others have encryption or may be ultra quiet. Others offer longer warranties etc.
The 80-120GB range should give you plenty of scope. A 5400RPM drive will be a good all-rounder, whilst a 7200RPM offers ultimate speed. Unless you are going to be using disk intensive apps, the 5400RPM should be sufficient. It's also worth looking out for drives with at least 8MB cache.
If you are going to buy an external enclosure then try to get a FireWire or FW/USB combo version. Don't buy a USB-only enclosure as it will not be able to boot up your PowerBook. Having a bootable external drive will give you more and better options when troubleshooting (or if there's a problem with the internal).

  • Apple DVD Player freezing PowerBook when power adapter unplugged

I've got a 15" 1.5GHz G4 PowerBook (previous generation, bought in August 2005) with 1Gb RAM and a Combo drive, running OSX 10.4.2 (not 10.4.3)
When I play DVD movies through Apple's DVD player, and then eject the disc (by clicking the eject button in the DVD player window), everything is normal, until I unplug the power adapter (while the computer is running, but without the DVD in the drive). Then, everything freezes - the pointer locks up, the keyboard locks up, everything. The only way to get out of this is to hold the power button down.
What could be causing this? Is it because I'm ejecting the disc while it's essentially still playing (I keep on forgetting to press the "Stop" button)?
It's also only started doing this since I installed drivers for my new Epson Stylus D88 printer - could this be a problem?
I've repaired permissions, and that seems to have done nothing.
Note: Apple DVD Player is not running when I unplug the power adapter, nor is the DVD in the drive.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks for the help

I've found out that it's not actually a total freeze, it's a 10 second hang and I'm impatient!!
But, during the hang, it appears as if everything is frozen.
I'll contact Epson - I downloaded an update to the printer driver, but that doens't seem to have done anything. I can't uninstall the printer driver, as I'm currently at university, and I don't have the installer CD with me for the printer.

  • 65W Adapter on my PowerBook?

    Hello,
I just got an used 12" PowerBook. I just realised that it came wth the 661-3048 65W power adapter instead of the 661-3049 45W power adapter would it work with this Powerbook without damaging my it? ...
    Thanks for your answers
(sorry for the typo on the previous post, I do not know how to delete it)

It will work fine/not damage anything etc..
While 45W chargers shipped with select PowerBooks and iBooks the official apple replacement from the online store (designed to work with all models) is only 65W.

  • T440s - 45W vs 65W AC Adapter

    Hello,
On the sales configurator, I have two options for the power cord: (a) 45W AC Adapter - US (2pin), and (b) 65W AC Adapter - AG.
Is there any reason to choose the 45W over the 65W adapter? What's "US" vs "AG"? Is there any size difference? My primary use will actually be outside of US.
    Any thoughts appreciated.
    Thanks!

  • Powerbook 12" G4 / are yo-yo power adapter's interchangeable from G3 to G4?

My 12" Powerbook G4 power adapter is no longer working. I have the original power adapter from my old Lombard Powerbook. . . is it possible to use the Lombard's power supply on the G4?
FWIW, both are the yo-yo type power adapter.
    Thanks.

Since you've already tried it and found out it "works," all I can say is that I wouldn't recommend it. The charge/wattage needed by the newer PowerBook won't get what it needs from the older PowerBook Lombard's AC adapter.
It's like the age-old question of interchangeability of the 45W and 65W brick adapters for the PowerBooks/dual-USB iBooks.
The 45W adapter is designed for the iBooks and the 12-inch PowerBook (and the older Titanium PowerBook G4s). YES, you can plug it in to the new aluminum 15-inch PowerBooks and 17-inch ones, but it does not draw enough power to fully supply these machines. It can do harm by doing so.
On the other hand, using the 65W adapter designed for the aluminum 15-inch and 17-inch PowerBooks can be backwards compatible with the 12-inch iBooks (dual-USB and newer) and the 12-inch PowerBook G4s, since one, Apple officially replaced the 45W ones with the 65W models, and two, the 12-inchers (iBooks and/or PowerBooks) will only draw what it needs from the 65W adapter, not more.
    So, you harm your 15-inch and 17-inch using a 45W, but you won't harm your 12-inch with a 65W.
That's the basis for my opinion about you using the old Lombard adapter with your 12-inch PowerBook, since as you've also said, it takes longer to charge with it.

  • Powerbook G3 series power adapter

I was just given an Powerbook G3 series computer that is missing the adapter. I have been looking on eBay but it is confusing because I really don't know what I'm looking for. I assume it needs the yoyo am I correct?
All I can tell about this laptop is the info on the back 14.1tft 233mhz 512k can't turn it on till I get it charged up. Can anyone help me out?
    Thanks Mary
P.S my other computer is an iBook with OSX 10 on different adapter
    iBook   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

    Mary,
    Welcome to the Discussions.
You have the Powerbook G3 Series M4753 a.k.a. "Wallstreet". The PB 1400, 3400, any black G3, and clamshell iBook all use the same output adapter (45 watts) and the same size power port plug. I believe it was sometime during 2000>2001 time frame that Apple moved from the rectangular black adapter to the so-called yo-yo or saucer adapter; these are also 45 watt output. Then Apple moved to the slimmer powerbooks and iBooks which required a smaller power port plug.
The yo-yo adapters are suseptible to wire failures at the power port plug and also where the DC wire enters the saucer; I would avoid that adapter unless new.
I would perform a search on Google for 'Apple 45w power adapter'. You will not only get eBay hits, but also other sites that sell new and used replacements.

  • 45W MagSafe Power Adapter for Air

What is the best way to tell the two power adapters apart 45W Air adapter and the 85W Macbook Pro adapter?
What happens if you use the 85W adapter on the air?

It's Ok to use an adapter of a higher wattage then the one that came it.

  • 65 W versus 45 W power adapter ?

    Hi,
    I recently moved from a Tibook 800 to a PBook Alu 1.5.
The new one came with a 65 w power adapter. I have an extra 45w power adapter that I used with the TiBook.
What would be the consequence if I used the 45W adapter along with my AluBook ?
Thanks for any advice on that topic
    Luc

Let me firstly say that it is not recommended by Apple that you use a 45W adapter with a PowerBook that came with a 65W adapter as it can potentially do damage to both your hardware and battery.
Now, I do every now and then use 45W adapters with my PowerBook and find that while it does work, it's not perfect. To be honest, 45W is not enough for the PowerBook at its peak demand although for average use it will suffice. I cannot start my PowerBook when it is plugged into a 45W adapter although one started it will do all the right things. My biggest concern with using a 45W adapter is what is happening when the battery is charging as I really don't know what the missing 20W is doing to it.
In general I would recommend that you use it only as a last resort. You are much better off buying yourself a new 65W adapter if your needs require it.

  • Where can I get a new adapter for my iBook clamshell model M6411?

Hi, my iBook clamshell is a little ancient but in perfect working order.  However, the power cord is completely damaged and emits blue sparks when plugged in, so need a replacement.  Does anyone know where I can get a replacement from?  I tried ebay and have tried several online shops but the ones I have been sent for this model have all had the wrong size end to go into the laptop.
Its an ibook clamshell, blueberry and is model M6411.  The adapter is the 45w power adapter.  Can anyone help me please?

Hi, and welcome to Apple Support Communities.
It looks like this one should work:
    http://computerlogin.com/sales/productfilePHP/Y_Apple_Clamshell/200/Y_Apple_Clam shell_z_0033.php
I'm not familiar with that seller. Other World Computing has a replacement adapter:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Micro%20Accessories/ACADPTG3/
It's more than double the price, but I'm sure that they are a reputable merchant.
Likewise, iFixit is a known seller:

  • What ac adapter should i buy?

My work laptop has just been upgraded to a ProBook 430 G1, which came with a 45w ac adapter and I'd like to get a spare power cable for when i use the laptop at home.
The HP site suggests a "HP 65W Slim Adapter" as an accessory for this model (http://store.hp.com/UKStore/Merch/Product.aspx?id=E9Y94EA&opt=ABU&sel=PBNB)
I have a number of ac adapters from my previous HP laptops, and they all appear to be 90W. If HP are recommending an accessory which is a higher Wattage, will my existing 90W adapters also be suitable?
    Thanks
