Powerbook 520 with no OS installed

i recently acquired a powerbook 520 and judging by the fact that when i try to boot it and i only reach a screen with a floppy disk and a flashing question mark, i assume there is no OS installed. it is my belief that one can download system 7 from the apple website to install on an old machine such as this, however could someone walk me through how i would create the floppys ? preferably i'd like to create them on my relatively old pc lappy which has an inbuilt floppy drive, however if this is not possible i can search for my long lost USB floppy drive and create them on my ibook g4.
thanks for your time.

Yes, you can download a free System 7.5.3 from Apple, e.g. the international English version here. The individual files are small enough to fit onto 1.4 MB Mac-formatted floppies. Once decoded (by StuffIt Expander for Macintosh, preferably on the PowerBook 520), the twenty segments constitute one single disk image. You place the segments (one .smi and nineteen .part) in a common folder on the hard disk. Double-clicking on the first segment (.smi) will mount the total image. The installer can be found in the thus mounted image.
Since the aforementioned system download does not contain a bootable floppy, the first obstacle will be to make such a disk. You could try doing this in your USB floppy drive connected to the iBook (running in Classic?). However, it is necessary to use a disk-image utility that can create a sector-copied floppy directly from a Disk Copy 4.2 disk image (e.g. via the Make A Copy button in Disk Copy 4.2 or the Make a Floppy command in the Utilities menu of Disk Copy 6.3.3). The Network Access Disk 7.5 here contains a suitable disk image.
If you use a PC, things will be more complicated. The following is only to give you an idea of what to do:
Download the freeware utility Aladdin Expander 2.0 (try a Google search for the exact file name).
A disk-image utility for PC will also be needed. For example, the shareware utility WinImage 6.10 (winima61.exe here).
Install the programs on the PC.
Prepare an empty PC-formatted 1.44 MB (HD) diskette through the FORMAT A: command in DOS (or via the "Full" formatting command under Windows).
Download the Network Access Disk 7.5 .bin file (NetworkAccess_Disk7.5.sea.bin). The Windows operating system may truncate the file name. Drag this downloaded file (as it is) onto the Aladdin Expander 2.0 icon (on the Desktop). Aladdin Expander will decode the file into an archive (document) called Network Access Disk 7.5, and automatically decompress the latter into a Network Access folder.
Inside the Network Access folder you will find a Read Me document and a file called Network Access.image.
Insert the empty PC-formatted diskette into the PC's floppy drive.
If WinImage is used, drag the Network Access.image onto the program icon. In the WinImage application window, select Write disk (from the Disk menu) or click on the Write disk icon. When the operation is completed, immediately eject and lock the diskette.
You should now have a startup floppy for the PowerBook 520.
The procedure is a variant of a method described in the 68000 FAQ (here). This is an exeception to a general rule. Normally, do not decode or decompress MacBinary (.bin) or BinHex (.hqx) files until on a Mac.
Start the PowerBook from the Network Access floppy. Check whether the hard disk is visible. If yes, it is probably wise to erase it (if not already done). Use Erase Disk from the Special menu for this.
It is possible to drag-copy the system folder from a Network Access floppy to an empty hard disk. This will provide you with a temporary system in order to free the floppy drive for subsequent file transfers.
A ready-to-use version of StuffIt Expander for Macintosh (4.0.1) can be obtained through a PC like this: Download MACDISK.EXE here. Prepare an empty PC-formatted 1.44 MB diskette via FORMAT A: under DOS or the "Full" formatting command under Windows (this is important). Launch the MACDISK.EXE program on the PC. Follow the on-screen directions. The result will be a floppy, complete with a StuffIt Expander installer, that you can immediately use in the PowerBook.

  • Install OS 9 on PowerBook G4 with Tiger

I have a 2003 17" PowerBook G4 with Tiger installed on it. I need to have Classic on it. The original PowerBook restore disk will not install OS 9 or anything else because, it says, the operating system on the computer is newer than the restore disk's. I want to just install OS 9 so that I can have Classic, but have not found a way to do this. The PB G4 is not OS 9-bootable. Any ideas?

On the PB G4 Restore Disk there is an installer for additional software and classic support. However, it doesn't work. When I run it, it goes for a minute, then opens a window requesting I insert the disk with a matching design on it. What it's requesting is the same CD that's already in there, but since it doesn't know it's there, I eject it and re-insert it. Still it does nothing. The only option is to Quit. There is nothing from the regular OS X installation to install Classic.
So, is my only option to use the Restore disk on a Firewire drive, install OS X and Classic on it, then copy it over to my regular boot drive?
    Thanks for your help.

  • Why leopard DVD not installing to powerbook G4 with Mac OS X 10.3.9? Help.

I'm trying to install leopard DVD to my daughter's powerbook G4 with os x 10.3.9. During the installation process, it says unable to install 10.5, mac os x 10.4 or later could not be found.....how am I gonna do this. Please help...

    gzleearl,
Once an OS has been installed, the point upgrades, such as 10.1.x to 10.1.5 (Final) 10.2.x to 10.2.8 (Final), 10.3.x to 10.3.9 (Final), 10.4.x to 10.4.11 (Final), and 10.5.x to 10.5.6 (Pending), can be downloaded for free.
If your Mac meets the Leopard System Requirements, the Full Retail Version, of the Leopard Install DVD, can be purchased at The Apple Store (U.S.), Apple retail stores, Apple resellers, and some Online vendors.
If you know what to look for a Full Retail Version, of the Leopard Install DVD, can be purchased, sometimes less expensively, at some online Apple retailers, Amazon, eBay, FastMac, HardCore Mac, etc.
As you have discovered be sure not to purchase grey, upgrade or machine specific CDs or DVDs.
Tiger and Leopard are on DVD.
The disc should look exactly like the images in the above links, and not say Upgrade, CPU Drop-in DVD, or "This software is part of a hardware bundle purchase - not to be sold seperately." on it.
    Caveat Emptor!
If any are presently available, examine these items very carefully, and if in doubt, ask questions of the seller before purchase!

Once Leopard 10.5.x.x is installed, you can use the Mac OS X 10.5.8 Combo Update to upgrade to the current version.
You may also find this Leopard Installation and Setup Guide PDF useful.
The posted RAM System Requirement is the bare minimum.
For optimum performance, more is recommended.
As a precaution, before upgrading the OS, you should create a backup of the entire system, or at least, any data you do not wish to lose or corrupt.
In addition to the Archive & Install procedure, there is also a Simple Upgrade, or an Erase & Install option.
Review the info here About Installation Options.
Specifically; "About Upgrade to Mac OS X
Upgrading to Mac OS X takes a little longer than installing it on a volume without Mac OS X, but it is the least intrusive way to install--most of your existing settings and applications are left untouched during an upgrade. In other words, you won't have to configure a lot of settings afterwards."

  • Powerbook 520 on OS 7

Hi guys, just bought a Powerbook 520. It has OS 7 running but no software to speak of, no Claris etc...where can I download some useful software, I need a word processor and TCP internet software.
Also generally where can I find info on old OS 7 x software...cant find much, and no idea wher to look.
    Thanks
    Nathan

Do you have the software for the Global Village modem, if necessary? Is it an external or internal modem? If an original internal modem, could the PowerPort 500 software at
    ftp://ftp.globalvillage.com/pub/software/mac/previous/disk_images
    be of interest?
For the internet, to begin with, you would need TCP/IP software. This could be either a MacTCP or a TCP/IP control panel in the Control Panels folder. Exactly which operating system (see under About This... in the Apple menu at the Desktop level) is installed? The downloadable System 7.5.3 (e.g. British and US) contains this software.
Once you have either a MacTCP or TCP/IP control panel, a connection program (for example, MacPPP 2.5.3 here) would be needed.
Finally, a suitable browser is required. WannaBe is small enough to fit onto a floppy. By means of this browser you can then download (from http sites only) larger files (for instance, the iCab browser) directly to the PowerBook 520.
Nisus Compact could perhaps be an alternative word processor.

I have a PowerBook G4 with a non-functioning monitor.  It used to work with an external monitor, but I reinstalled the OS, which cleared the display preferences and now when I restart it won't detect the external monitor. This means I can't use the computer anymore. How do I fix? I tried using the Command+F2 keyboard shortcut, but it doesnt' work.  It's possible that since I reinstalled the OS, it still needs to be set up, so there's only a welcome screen (but since I can't see it I'm not sure).

There is no limit to the number of times you can re-install Office on the same computer.
    You can activate by telephone:

  • Running Dual boot windows 8 and win 7 pro with xp mode installed!! I love it!!

It took over 2 days to figure out how to adjust the bios to get my win 7 pro DVD to boot and install dual boot on this GREAT MACHINE!!
Step 1: using diskmgmt.msc you have to shring the C partition. I shrunk it so I had 80GB remaining as unallocated space.
Step 2: You have to enter the machine Bios adn set the BIOS to Both and UEFI as first
Step 3: Connect your usb dvd
Step 4: Put your win 7 pro dvd in the usb dvd drive
Step 5: Reboot your machine and when it starts press F12 to get the boot menu and select the usb dvd drive then press enter
    The machine restarts
Message on screen says press a key to boot from cd/dvd
Press space and it boots up the win 7 pro DVD
After files copy and load the setup screen asks to accept the agreement and where to install win 7
BE SURE TO SELECT THE 80GB location
Then follow thru the win 7 prompts to load it.
When the machine restarts you will see a dual boot screen with Windows 7 on top as first selection and Windows 8 below it as 2nd selection.
Make sure to hit enter with windows 7 selected
    The win 7 installation completes.
You will see many items with drivers not installed dont fret.
You can load most of the drivers by highlighting the device in control panel/device manager and pick update driver then select BROWSE for DRIVER and be sure to put in drive D:\ which is now the windows 8 drive and hit search.
Many of the windows 8 drivers installed with no issue.
The Realtek driver was an exception .. goto to the lenovo site and pick the x100e tablet and download the LAN driver from there  about (4MB). Copy it to flash drive and install it in win 7 from the .exe file. The driver for LAN will install sucessfully. The version of the driver is 7.46 something the 7.11 versions do not workl.
I have only 3 drivers that I could not find - 2 list as unknown and are related to ACPI or power management and 1 lists as USB controller but all the USB stuff works without it.
Be sure to either shutdown the system or sign out of win 8 when your done so you get the dual boot menu. If you shutdown while logged into win 8 the next time you start up it will go right to win 8 until you signout and restart.
Just to let you know an easy way to shutdown is go to the desktop and press ALT + FN + F4 and a shutdown menu comes up on the desktop.
Once win 7 pro is installed you can download the XP mode free from Microsoft and install it.
This is of course AFTER you have ACTIVATED WINDOWS 7 ONLINE with YOUR ACTIVATION KEY(you supply).
ENJOY! This is the BEST machine I ever had!

It's been many, many years since I don't do dual boot anymore. Don't find the reason to do it, either. Different kinds of virtualization should be enough. Anyway...

  • I bought a mac mini with Lion pre-installed.  If I upgrade my mac mini to Mountain Lion, am I free to install Lion on my older macbook using the mini license?

I currently have two macs.  A 2008 macbook which is running Snow Leopard, can run Lion, and cannot run Mountain Lion.  I also have a mac mini which came with Lion pre-installed.  I plan on upgrading my mini to Mountain Lion when it's available.  After I upgrade, it seems like I should be able to install Lion on my macbook using the license that came with my mini.
I have found many articles about making a DVD or bootable USB drive to recover, or install Lion onto other macs.  So, I am not tied to the mac app store.  And I am not worried about how to install Lion onto the macbook.
I have also read a few discussions about upgrading using pre-installed Lion license.  From what I've read, if someone buys Lion through the app store, they can install it on all of their macs.  But, if they have a machine the came with Lion pre-installed they can only use Lion on one machine.  However it is unclear if that license can be transferred to another machine.
Another common answer that I have seen is, "Don't be cheap!  Just buy Lion throught the app store."  This is not about money, I'm interested in the technical challange, and the leagal question.
Does anyone have experience with this, or opinions?

If your machine came with Lion preinstalled, you cannot use it on another machine. It is tied to the machine it came with. You are allowed to make a one time transfer of the OS when you sell the machine as long as it remains with that machine.
If you purchase Lion from the app store, you are free to install it on as many Macs as you own - however, if/when you sell one of those Macs, you are required to uninstall Lion as the license is not transferable and you need to reinstall the original OS.
You can read the SLA for yourself - the link to the downloads to all licenses is here:

I am having a problem with Windows Fusion installed on a MacBook OS 10.  When attempting to use a Browser, (either IE, or Chrome), under Windows Fusion, I cannot browse to ANY page except Gmail.com.
I checked all security settings, and found no problem. Neither browser will allow me to do ANYTHING other than go to Gmail.com!!!
I am not sure if I have some virus on my Windows side, because Google and Safari both work perfectly on my Apple side, just not when running Windows Fusion.
Is there some setting I am missing, or do you think I have malware/virus issues?? My Internet connection is DEFINITELY working fine - I can send, receive, open, and close all my email on Gmail only, and can navigate freely on Gmail, but cannot get to any other site even hyperlinked to Gmail.

If you've already tried my previous suggestions, it may be that something has tampered with the DNS settings in your Windows VM, which might bypass the settings your Mac uses. Assuming you're using Windows 8, these instructions explain how to check and change the DNS settings. There's also a link in those instructions listing a variety of suggested DNS settings. If you do try changing the settings, record what the settings currently are in case you want to return to them.

    Hi,
I am unable to install extensions, they show up with "will be installed after you restart Firefox" even after I restart.
The "Staged" folder is present and remains after a restart, but the extensions do not get installed. They show in the extensions page with the "will be installed after you restart Firefox" message and remain like this no matter how many times I restart.

P.S. Just tried to install the "troubleshooter" add-on before posting the question and I got an error saying it cannot install because it cannot modify the needed file. (I did it manually instead)

It is possible that there is a problem with the file(s) that store the extensions registry.
Delete the extensions.* files (e.g. extensions.sqlite, extensions.ini) and compatibility.ini in the Firefox profile folder to reset the extensions registry.
New files will be created when required.
    See "Corrupt extension files":
    *https://support.mozilla.org/kb/Unable+to+install+add-ons
If you see disabled or not compatible extensions in "Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions" then click the Tools button at the left end side of the Search Bar to check if there is a compatibility update available.
If this hasn't helped then also delete the addons.sqlite file.

We are planning to Silent print a PDF from a web page using Flex. We are targeting Windows and Mac with Arcobat reader installed. It is just from web page and silent printing to the default printer to the desktop/Laptop. Can anyone share your thoughts and experience with us. It will be very helpful..
For AIR : I tried the thread Re: AIR and PDF showing/silent printing

    Hey CodeMonkey & Ross,
Did you either of you ever find a solution? I'm stuck too, it seems I can get remote printing on all these PDFs to work but it just prints a blank page since I've been using Javascript in the browser, not Adobe's (they are Engineering drawings that I do not have permission to edit so I can't just insert code into them but I need to make work instructions). I've been scouring the internet for hours now, it seems that this thread is the only relevant/useful one at this point. No one else was trying to achieve this for similar reasons to mine.
    Thanks guys,
