I recently came into possession of one of these units. Does anyone know where I can get my hands on the software for it?

Go here and search on PC_Card. Be aware that Rev. C (makes hens teeth seem common) of the PCMCIA module is necessary if you upgrade to a PPC processor.
You may also need card-specific software for any given PC card.

  • Will system 7.1 run on Powerbook 520c?

    I am thinking about buying a used working powerbook 520c which uses system 7.1.1. I have disks for 7.1 and need to know if those will work on the powerbook since 7.1.1 can't be downloaded from apple. I do not have an external cd-rom to install 7.5 on the computer.

    With the downloadable System 7.5.3 (see Niel's link above) installed on the PowerBook 520c, you ought to be able to use most of the files and software from a System 7.1 LC III.
    It is not that difficult to carry out a System 7.5.3 installation. If the PB 520c contains at least an essentially functioning operating system already (7.1.1), it is more or less a matter of transferring (and decoding) the nineteen downloaded 7.5.3 files. This transfer can be done on 1.44 MB floppies, providing that you have access to an external USB floppy drive with a modern Mac. A PC with a floppy drive can handle Mac-formatted 1.44 MB disks, if a special utility (such as TransMac) is used. In order to read PC-formatted 1.44 MB floppy disks, the PB 520c's operating system would require an installed and active PC Exchange control panel (earlier 7.1 versions used the separate Apple File Exchange program from the Tidbits system disk).
    There are other transfer possibilities. For example, the PB 520c has built-in Ethernet (an external AAUI to RJ-45 transceiver required), but TCP/IP software (standard with 7.5.3 but not 7.1.1) would be needed when used in connection with modern computers. Another example could be a CompactFlash card in a PC Card adapter for CF, but only if the PowerBook has the (optional) PCMCIA Expansion Module.
    If the PB 520c has an empty hard disk, you would need another older Mac with a floppy drive (and Disk Copy 4.2 or 6.3.3) to create a bootable floppy to begin with. The Network Access disk (here) can be used for startup purposes.

  • Powerbook 520c on the web?

    I have a powerbook 520c with a floppy drive. When I plug the ethernet into my network, the server doesn't assign it an IP address. Also, there is no browser to use once the connection is up and running.
    Is there any way to connect to my iMac via ethernet and connect to the internet via its airport connection? Is there a way to copy files from the iMac to my 520? The iMac is running 10.4.

    Older versions of the MacOS only request an IP address (and indeed, turn on TCP/IP) when an application tries to use TCP/IP. So if you don't have any TCP/IP apps, you'll never have TCP/IP turn on.
    As for web browsers, your best bet is iCab (http://www.icab.de) It's the most modern 68040-compatible browser out there.
    For getting it on the 'net in the first place, if your iMac connects via AirPort, and you want to plug the 520c in to the iMac, you'll need to turn on Internet Sharing. It's in the 'Sharing' pref pane, under 'Internet'. Tell it where to share the connection from (AirPort,) and where to share it to (Built-in Ethernet.) Then click 'Start'. Finally, plug the Ethernet cable in to both the iMac and the PowerBook.
    How to copy files? Well, you need to enable AppleTalk on the iMac (Network pref pane, 'Configure' your adapter that will connect to the PowerBook, go to the 'AppleTalk' tab, and check off 'Make AppleTalk Active'.) Then you'll need to tell the PowerBook to use Ethernet for AppleTalk (Either the 'AppleTalk' or the 'Network' control panel, depending on if you're using 'Classic' or 'Open Transport' networking,) finally, enable file sharing on one of the computers. (I find it easier from the newer Mac,) and connect from the other one.

  • Lan set up on powerbook 520c

    My daughter has a Powerbook 520c which we would like to connect to my lan network running Linux and winxp (if at all possible). She has a farallon adaptor to connect the cable but we have no idea where to start or even if we have the software installed to do so. Can someone please tell me step by step what I need to do and where I can find the software if I dont have it? I dont even know what version of mac it is running - our knowledge of macs is VERY limited (almost none exsistant)
    I know its an old machine but if its possible we would like to try.

  • Help - PowerBook 520c modem not recognised

    I recently resurrected an old PowerBook 520c from my back shed. I was on the verge of binning it but tried installing some software for it. Could not find the original 7.6 disks it came with. But managed to find a Performa 7.5.1 CD which by SCSSI was able to connect it to my LC630.
    To keep this post short the PowerBook boots up fine but I think i am missing something vital for it to "see" the modem. Just out of curiosity I tried dialling in to my ISP but no luckk. "Serial port is used by another application" or something along those lines.
    I downloaded MacPPP on my current PowerBook G4 in the hope of "kick starting" the modem .
    I vaguely using Config PPP in the old days. What do I need to tell the PowerBook there is a modem in there and that it isn'[t really a Performa. Do I need to download Global modem software. If so, any ideas where I may get it from.

    JoeYou feel that i should get hold of the OS specific for the PowerBook, huh.Not quite. PBs 5x0 can run Systems/OSs from 7.1.1 to 8.1, but the latter requires the full complement of RAM (36MB) to run 8.0/8.1 elegantly. I don't know of a PB 5x0-specific CD, so your need is for a 'full install' set of floppies or a 'retail' CD. Just be prepared for the fact that the 7.5.3 download is 19 floppies. (Guess why CD-ROM was 'in' thereafter.) If you can attach a SCSI CD-ROM to your PB, using a CD (say one of OS 7.6.1, or 7.5.5, which do exist) will save your hair.
    Unless your internal modem is far out, installation of a new OS will provide a new modem CCL (script) for whatever modem is in the PB. You need to know who the modem's maker is so that you can choose the relevant modem in Modem control panel.
    The aforementioned AAUI port on the back is Apple's guess at the time, before there was an agreed ethernet port standard. The AAUI/RJ-45 adapter will bridge from the PB's AAUI port to a standard Cat5e ethernet patch (or a crossover) cable.
    The way i have been getting CD roms thru to the PowerBook has been by SCSI the Performa with CD to the PowerBook.This sounds like SCSI disk mode, which, for all the reasons mentioned above, is NBG for the purpose of System/OS installation onto the PB.
    For some reason the PowerBook won't SCSI with my external CD Rom which I used to use all the time in the mid 90s with my 475!Ah! That's because the PB is an older PowerBook. Very genteel. Very stylish. And utterly maddening. It has a compact HDI-30 SCSI port, not the DB-25 port used by desktops. It needs either a special HDI-30 (with only 29 pins and a light grey jacket) to CN-50 adapter, or a switchable 30/29-pin adapter and conventional peripheral CN-50/CN-50 cable, to connect successfully to the CD-ROM. Hold fast to the idea that it can be done (I use it often). There must also be a pass-through terminator between the CD-ROM and the PB. Fortunately, the CD-ROM, if it is one of Apple's, will supply termination power to the daisy-chain, and be terminated on the remote side.
    The explanation takes longer than the setup does when you have the gear. There is more about this process in one of the previous posts if you need it.

  • Powerbook 520c Screen problem.

    Hi, I am turning an old Powerbook 520c into a digital picture frame.
    The screen has a problem where the bottom half is still visible, but covered in verticle RGB lines. They go BGR, BGR, BGR, BGR, etc.

    you can download system 7.5.3 from Apple. It comes in 17 parts, so do I need 17 floppies?
    The North American English download (link above) consists of nineteen files. The same is true for the British English version (here). Twenty files for the International English version (here).
    French and German versions come as seventeen files. However, speech recognition is probably limited to English. In dubio, try the North American English system software first.
    Each downloadable file is small enough to (just) fit onto a 1.44 MB diskette. Please note that you are supposed to transfer the files to the hard disk of the PowerBook 520c. You could use separate floppies, or erase one disk over and over again.
    Some reports seem to indicate that less space than normal could be available on disks originating from USB floppy drives connected to Mac OS X computers. If this is a real problem, you could alternatively use a PC for the download (and PC-formatted floppies for the transfers). In this case it is important not to decode the MacBinary (.bin) until on the PB 520c.
    Use StuffIt Expander to decode the .bin (on the PB 520c). Place ALL the decoded files (one .smi and eighteen .part for the North American English download) in one common folder. Please note that the hard disk has to be formatted HFS (Standard) for System 7.5.3, not HFS+ (Extended).
    It is wise to have a startup floppy (the Network Access Disk 7.5 here). You can create this disk in Disk Copy 4.2 (the Make A Copy button) on the PB 520c before installing a new system.
    Start from the Network Access floppy. Double-click on the first (.smi) file to mount the total disk image. The installer will be found in the mounted image. See steps 7 and 8 in this document for information about how to perform a clean installation (it is not necessary to update to 7.5.5). Neither Disk Copy nor any other disk image utility is used with the System 7.5.3 files.

  • Oh Lord, I have a Powerbook 520c!!

    While tossing out old electronic stuff, I discovered that I still have a PowerBook 520c, complete with that wild 4-prong power adapter.  Heavy little sucker!  I have no idea what is on it, but I'm sure it still works.  It looks pretty cherry to be honest, just, well, old.
    If it is worth anything to collectors, I'll sell it for what the market dictates.  If it is a give-away, I have a lot of stuff to do getting ready for a cross-country move.  If it is a give-away, I'll toss it.
    Any ideas?  I live, for the moment, in Chicago, BTW.  Moving to LA at the end of Sept.

    It's almost certainly not going to be worth much. There were far too many of them produced to be any sort of collectors' item. eBay showed a bunch available with no bids; the only ones showing as sold went for ca. $15 - $25 plus shipping.   • Anyway of connecting a PCMCIA module to a NB100 netbook?

    I have a few PCMCIA expensive modules that I would like to use with my new netbook. For example, a TV decoder + video input that costed me about 100 Euro. The NB100 has no PCMCIA slot, of course.
    I wonder if I could get some type of adaptor from PCMCIA to USB 2 or to SD slot. Do you know of any?

    Thank you. i notice it might not be a goo idea; there seems tobe no such an universal adapter; some PCMCIA modules work, others don't. Those adapters are mostly designed for 3G mobile modems and the like. (not my case)

  • Powerbook 520c no longer boots?

    Hi,
    I recently got hold of a PB520c (System 7.1 installed.) Everything booted fine to start with, but now something seems to have gone wrong. When I try to boot it I get the Mac logo for about half a second, then the screen flickers and an picture of a floppy disk with a question mark appears on the screen.
    The last thing I installed before this happened was Apple's Intelligent Battery software (the battery seemed dead and I wanted to see if I could revive it.) However, I had rebooted several times since then.
    THe problem first appeared when I restarted while running on battery power only (I don't know if this had anything to do with it.) As the OS shut down it came up a message about the Autoremounter preferences file not being found, but it had restarted itself before I had a chance to do anything about this.
    Is there any way to revive the Powerbook? Unfortunately I don't have any install disks for it. Would I be able to create install disks from the System 7.5.3 disk images Apple has for download? (I don't have any Macs with floppy drives apart from the 520c unfortunately.)
    In case this matters (I doubt it does) the Powerbook only boots from the AC adapter, once it's running it will work from batteries, but I have to boot from the mains.

    Intelligent Battery Recondition (IBR) and VST's EMMpathy can often do in tandem what neither can do alone to revivify the PB 500 series batteries. It is more than probable that not being able to charge your batteries yet has caused the internal (deep) 616-0021 rechargeable backup battery to drain to the point that:
    1) it no longer buys the three minutes of time after the main batteries reach last gasp in which you can swap in a charged battery, or shut down gracefully, and
    2) cannot maintain PRAM settings, such as 'where is the startup volume?', and
    3) allows the Power Manager to get very confused indeed.
    With batteries out and AC adapter disconnected, allow the PB to sit for 10min. Hold down the command-option-control-power keys together (the 500s lack the reset/interrupt switches of other PBs and desktops) for 20-odd sec. to reset the Power Manager. Reconnect the AC adapter, start up and immediately hold command-option-p-r to reset the PRAM (and point the PB at its hard drive). If the PB successfully boots from its hard drive, you can insert the batteries, but don't attempt to power the PB from them. Let them take what charge they will as you use the machine and after shutdown.
    If they show no sign of charging after 24hr of opportunity to charge from the adapter, begin the head-banging exercise of resuscitation. EMMpathy gives more info. as it diagnoses battery condition, but it is not more successful by itself than is Apple's app. in overcoming the first hurdle: the microprocessor (EEPROM) in the battery. Start IBR with a battery half-inserted into the right bay. When IBR asks 'wheresabaddery', push the battery right in. With luck, IBR will then fast charge the battery to the point that the microprocessor will remember that it is intelligent, and perhaps continue to charge the battery. If IBR tells you to return the battery to Apple, resist the urge and repeat the process several times until ...
    EMMpathy can be employed when this initial phase of reanimating the zombie is over. It will give you a dossier on the battery's present state, show the current proportion of full charge as the battery continues to charge, and install the Sleep Drain Bug Fix that supposedly supplies an antibiotic after the boil has been lanced. Above all, however, nil desperandum. Just leaving the PB on the AC adapter night and day may also help in the reanimation. In the meantime, the PB 500 will be a snappy performer on the adapter.
    The backup battery reputedly recharges only as the main batteries reach full charge, but often much sooner, such that you may find that the PB remembers its hard drive's whereabouts at the next startup. While the batteries are reawakening (and permanent return to health is only about 50% likely at best) you can proceed to test the HDD with Disk First Aid, reinstall the HDD's driver with Drive Setup (both from a suitable '040-savvy Disk Tools diskette) and re-install or upgrade the OS. How far depends on your RAM complement, which is 36MB at maximum.

  • PowerBook 520c

    I just upgraded my PB with a new HD and I've been trying to get the system to boot from my external CDROM (Apple 600e). I have a very bare bones OS installed on the new HD (from the tools disk). No matter what I've tried I can't get the system to boot from the OS8 CDROM so that I can get a full system install. I've tried holding the "C" key and the shift-option-command-delete (per an article on Apple's support page). When the system boots there is some CDROM activity but the PB will always default to the HD. The HD I installed is a new Apple 1.3 Gig drive. I also upgraded the processor to the G3 daughterboard and added a 33 Meg memory module. I have one utility that I ran that said that the Apple CDOM and CD init extensions did not load at boot up (they are in the extensions folder). Any thoughts as to what's going on?

    The full bag of necessary System Extensions (in CD-ROM Setup 4.0.2 and later) is Apple CD-ROM, Foreign File Access, High Sierra File Access and ISO 9660 File Access, with the additional extension Audio CD Access and Control Panel AppleCD Speed Switch in System 6.
    You have verified that dark grey cables will not serve your purpose. The HDI-30 plug, or a switchable HDI-30 adapter, uses the 30th pin to invoke SCSI Disk Mode in the PB, in which the PB becomes a quasi-peripheral, an external drive, to another, 'host' computer. In SCSI Disk Mode the PB does not even load a System. All necessary code for the mode resides in ROM. SCSI Disk mode is exclusively for trouble-shooting hard drive behaviour. It cannot be used to install a System because the Installer for the System will 'see' the PB as just another hard drive attached to the host computer, and will not install the PB-specific software.
    Using a switchable adapter gives you the best of both worlds. Apple's dark grey (30 pins) and light grey (29 pins) cables separate the purposes that are both incorporated into a switchable (DOCK and SCSI) adapter. When you wish to use, as in your case, a CD-ROM as an external drive in conjunction with your PB, you must use a light grey cable or a switchable adapter in SCSI position. Apple's cables were designed so that the terminator at the PB end of the daisy-chain was interpolated between the cable and the peripheral. The adapter setup that I outlined before has the terminator between the cable and the adapter. The effect is the same in each case. A second terminator on the remote side of the CD-ROM is still necessary in both cases.
    If you can arrange either of these cablings, secure in the knowledge that pin numbers, SCSI IDs and terminations are taken care of, and yet still fail to have the CD in the CD-ROM drive mount, you must suspect the CD-ROM drive. Either it is not internally enabled to supply termination power to the daisy-chain, or it is defective. Are you able to test the 600e with another Mac?

  • PowerBook 520c with the PPC upgrade

    The standard CPU configuration for this PB will handle up to OS 8.1. Can one go beyond that (ie OS 8,6) with the PPC upgrade?

    Although you can give a PB 500 a new heart, the rest of the circulatory system remains the same. 680x0 upgrades to PPC are not supported by OS 8.5, let alone OS 8.6. If the upgrade to PPC includes a logic board upgrade, you can expect greater things.

  • Powerbook 520 Compact Flash Problem

    I have just bought a PCMCIA CF adapter and a 2gb Sandisk CF card.
    Inserting the adapter into the PCMCIA module works ok, however when I insert the CF card into the adapter the adapter and card are ejected after a couple of seconds.
    I have tried the card in the card reader on my XP machine and it is all ok.
    Any Ideas as to why my powerbook throws its toys (CF Card) out of its pram?

    Jan Hedland is the resident expert on these older machines, so he should be around soon. My suggestion for formatting is to do it on a modern machine if possible. If you are running OS 8.6 on the PB 520, you can format it as MacOS Extended (HFS+); if running OS 8.0 or earlier, you must use MacOS Standard (HFS). Mac OS 8.1 through 9.2.2 can use either format.
    As I recall, I formatted a PC card hard drive on my Wallstreet using Drive Setup in the Utilities folder. Drive Setup cannot see HDs connected to a USB or Firewire PC card, but apparently could handle the PC card HD.

  • Xircom CEM2 PCMCIA Card

    I came into 'good fortune' with an older Toshiba laptop, drawback is... no ethernet. It came with a Xircom PCMCIA Type III card and the ethernet port on that broke, so I bought a Xircom CEM2 PCMCIA Type II card off of eBay.
    Right now my good fortune isn't so good. My RAM went out, one stick at a time, waiting on replacements, then my USB port went out (gives power, but fails to recognize devices on any OS). CD-ROM went out, so I purchased a DVD drive, some discs read OK, but since I have 64MB of RAM now I get kernel panics, so I've got to go light. All these parts are ordered, so I figured now would be a good time to troubleshoot this old new network card / modem.
    All mini distros (DSL, Puppy, Tiny Core) pick up *A* PCMCIA module that seems to be the right one, but the ETH0 fails to start and apparently I'm not the only one having issues with this card. Even Windows XP has problems with it, and according to the EOL support documents the last supported OSes are Windows 98/NT/DOS. With a card this old and OSes that are somewhat modern, it shouldn't be this difficult should it?

    I've never had any luck with Xircom cards.  I've had 2 or three from the same era as your hardware and even under Windows they were a beast to get to work. 
    Our of curiosity, why exactly are you spending this much cash on an ancient laptop?  I have 2 dell laptops here from a similar era (early 2000's) but both work fine so I've had no cause to complain nor am I likely to spend any money on them either.  Aside from that, the only reason I've kept them is to experiment on them and I don't do that very often right now...pity.

    Does anyone know if/how I can get info off of a 3.5 floppy from the vintage Apple Mac computers from around 1989-1991?  I have some records from the school I taught at during that time period that I cannot find a way to get off the disk. Thanks.

    I believe your best approach would be to seek a Mac User group in your region These groups most always have a member who keeps and maintains older Mac hardware which you need to get the data.
    I personally keep a 1994 PowerBook 540c around to play with and just in case I need some old stuff. I just checked and it can read 800k and 1.44 HD floppies. I don't think it will read 400k though.
    Worst case if you can't find anyone to help then send them and I would try to retreive the data. I have the PCMCIA module so can easily transfer data via Compact Flash card to CD, DVD, HDD etc.

    My router's IP is 192.168.123.254 but if I ping that address or I try to connect to the web interface on that address to configure the router I can't get any connection...  I've also tried to specify all paramaters directly in rc.conf (eth0="eth0 192.168.123.1 netmask 255.255.255.0 broadcast 192.168.123.255") but that didn't help neither.
    I'm kind of out of ideas on how to solve this... I hope someone here will help me getting out of windows (the only OS on my pc with internet FTM).

    I'm so stupid... I should've thought about iptables... I'm reconfiguring them now, thank you very much!
