Powerbook: a definitive advise

i use a powerbook 15" - 1,67 ghz - 1mb ram - ATI Mobility Radeon 9700 with 128MB of ddr sdram as a graphic video card - 100/7200 rpm hd
at present time i use lightroom and iphoto but i understand aperture as a more advanced instrument and really would like use it. i am an amateur usually shooting jpg in high quality and few raw (say 200/300 per year).
do you think i can really use aperture or is better for me stay in lightroom?
many thanks indeed.

I'm running it on the 15" Powerbook 1.5GHZ with same video card as you and 2GB RAM. Like the other 2 comments, it does work on this configuration, but slows down at times. It's a great ap, and I plan to continue using it. I do, however, plan to purchase one of the new iMacs primarily because it will run Aperture much more quickly and give me much more screen space to make use of such a good ap. My photography is becoming a larger part of my work, and it's worth the investment. I won't lie, there are definitely times when I'm a bit frustrated with the speed, but all in all, the quality of the workflow makes up for it and allows me to get my work done.
I have looked at Lightroom (not extensively), and while it looks nice, Aperture is nicer and since it was a "finished" product (see others comments on this forum about bugs and complaints about features), I have already made the investment and gone through the learning curve. I think I made the right choice. I have been following this forum for a while, and I think Joe Schorr and the Aperture Team are responsive and working very hard at improving the ap (fixing bugs, adding features, fiine tuning code to increase speed) on a daily basis, and this gives me confidence in my choice.
I would also recommend that you upgrade to 2GB of RAM.

  • Fonts malfunctioning in Photoshop CS5

Hi, I've got a problem with certain fonts in Photoshop CS5 running on Windows 7. Normally in the drop-down menu of the fonts list, there's an "O" or "TT" symbol next to each font to signify if it's OpenType or TrueType respectively. However, there are five fonts that don't have either symbol:
    Courier Regular
    FixedSys
    Small Fonts
    System Bold
    Terminal
Whenever I select these fonts in Photoshop, I get an error message saying "Could not complete your request because of a program error". This is particularly annoying, because it interrupts me scrolling through the fonts list. I tried hiding these fonts in Windows Explorer, but even though they don't appear in Microsoft Office programs, they still show up in Photoshop. I want to delete them, but apparently they are protected system fonts. So I followed this guide to take ownership of the fonts: http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/67717-take-ownership-file.html
After I had reassigned ownership of the fonts to me, I was able to delete Courier Regular, Small Fonts and System Bold. However I can't delete FixedSys because I get an error message saying "FixedSys (Set #6) cannot be deleted because it is in use." (No, it's not!) And for some reason I can't reassign ownership for Terminal because its Properties aren't available. Even if I hold Alt and double-click on the font (which is the shortcut for opening Properties), nothing happens. How do I delete these two malfunctioning fonts from my computer?

I strongly recommend you try to get to the bottom of why you're having a "malfunction" rather than try to delete protected system fonts.  Windows protects those fonts for a reason, and trying to remove them WILL net you other problems.
For what it's worth, the fonts you have named all work great on my Windows 7 system in Photoshop, so there's some specific problem with your setup (Photoshop?  Your system?) that you really need to solve.
Not having seen the particular problem you're reporting, I don't really know how to tell you to get more information, but I definitely advise you to try to solve that problem directly and not delete the fonts.
Because you've already removed the above fonts, I suspect at some point you may need to reinstall windows (although it may have restored them automatically).  I recommend you run the command SFC /SCANNOW /VERIFYONLY on your system (from a CMD window started as Administrator).  Windows will tell you whether it is in need of repair.

  • Error logging on only for iWeb

I have changed no settings and have tried connecting on many different networks, but for the past 2 days every time I try to publish my changes to my iWeb site, the following happens:
    - says "logging onto .Mac"
    - creates pages
    - says "There Was na Error Updating .Mac"
I see no one else having this problem here so I doubt it's a Me conversion issue. I'm able to access iDisk fine and my syncs seem to be working as well. Are software issues like this covered by AppleCare plans?

It's interesting that you should say this since I have taken a fairly good look at other threads in the iWeb08 discussions and only see one or two which describe similar issues, and in none is there a statement from Apple definitively advising on the root cause.
You'd think that being down for several days would at least warrant a spam to members about the status?

  • Tricky decision: iPhone vs. new computer for travel?

    Hey all!
I'm about to go on a three month trip through Latin America (Brazil and Buenos Aires). I am currently using an aged, beat to **** Powerbook that definitely won't accompany me on the journey.
I wanted to get the amazing iPhone, especially for its GPS and voice recording, but I don't believe the AT+T contract they rope you in for will work in Latin America, so that would be a huge waste of money for three months. I could alternately bring my little sisters' old and similarly aged iBook 12", but the thing doesn't run well and I'd hate to be hauling it around all over the place. Or I could go nuts and get an Air, since I need a laptop replacement anyway.
It seems above all that I should just get a Touch, and use it for email, etc. I was disappointed to hear that even using a USB converter, you can't plug a keyboard into it for typing. Is this true? Also, an ever important feature I'm looking for is a voice recorder, and I'm dubious as to whether the Touch can do this. Nevertheless, should I just get a Touch and call it a party?
    Thanks!

If your main requirements are email and a voice recorder, you should be able to use a Touch for that. With the 2.0 Touch software, you can get onto the App Store and buy one of the voice recorder apps offered there.
Note that the Touch will only get onto the net over WiFi, so you'll have to find a web cafe or similar with WiFi access.

  • **Need help with decision...

With all the quirks of Lion, I have not yet downloaded it on my MacBook Pro.
I did upgrade to iOS5 my iPad 2 and iPhone 4.
I want to use iCloud. I know to get iCloud on my MacBook, I have to download Lion first.
Can I use ICloud on my iPad 2 and iPhone WITHOUT downloading it to my MacBook?
    All replies are greatly appreciated!
    Thanks.

I too am a Dell laptop convert for over a year. I used Dell laptops for 6 years. I actually had very good experiences with my Dells and only made the decision to switch to a Mac PowerBook based on very close criteria. I also have an IBM ThinkPad which I think is a better machine than Dell. I didn't know how much easier it was going to be to operate and use a Mac. I do alot of Internet work, e-mail, convert VHS to DVD, work with and manage a Microsoft network with PC's, echange documents with PC's, etc. All of this is so much easier on a Mac. I have to manage the ThinkPad everyday with virus software, antispyware, and so on. Also, the operating system requires much more savvy to keep going when problems arise. The Media Center is Microsoft's version of software such as iPhoto, iMovie, etc. that comes with a PowerBook. I advise you to visit the Appple web site and thouroughly review the descriptions of the software and compare it to the descriptions of the MS software. From your message, it seems like the media center is very important to you. The Mac will out shine others in this area. But the biggest advantage I found is the ease of use in everyday tasks.

  • IDVD and DVD+R media

    Hi all,
I was wondering if someone could help me. Recently I bought a whole pile of DVD+R discs, however, I find that whenever I go to burn an iDVD project using the DVD+R disc it brings up an error message after it has burnt the disc. I have also noticed that it takes forever to write the 'Lead-in'.
My PowerBook Superdrive definitely supports the DVD+R media as I can backup using the Finder as well as read DVD+R discs burnt using my Acer.
    Thanks in advance,
    Stu

    Stu,
then I'm going to go out and purchase another brand of DVD+R to see if it makes a difference.
What's your fascination for DVD+R? DVD-R and DVD+R are just format wars equally royalties for companies... As I mentioned, DVD-R has been more compatible with DVD players. This advantage is being reduced with newer DVD players built to play both formats; much like the DVD-Audio and SACD format war is leading to "universal" players.

  • Customizing the "Recent Notifications" iView

    Hey folks
Our client wants to change the SAP standard "Recent Notifications" iView.  He thinks (justifiably) that the headers "subscriptions" and "subscribed items" are a bit vague, so we want to change them to more specific titles, like "subscription management" and "subscription alerts".
    Two questions:
    1. Is there an easy way of doing this?
    2. If not, how do I customize the iView?  According to the iView properties, it's based on com.sap.km.cm.actioninbox, but I can't find this in a PAR file anywhere...
    We're still on EP6SP14.
    Thanks,
    Chris

    Hi Christopher,
With such modifications you always have to choose between "bad" and "worse" - it's just the question which is which...
Of course you could create a new component with a new name based on the original one and also change the role content to refer to the modified application. On the other side, new SPs have new features and removed bugs, and normally you will like to use these advantages. But if you create a modification in a new namespace, the new PARs aren't referenced.
So, as said, you have to decide what would be more important for you - to have the possibility to upgrade with no extra admin tasks to get your old solution running or to use the new version and to redo the modifications. As in this case "redo" primarily means copy the property files to some place, I would definitely advise to go the way described.
When modifying Java code, this question is harder to answer (and there is no general answer at all). It also can make sense to try to only create some small part of a PAR and from within that, to reference the standard implementation - not always possible and at least initially more work. But to decide what makes most sense is really project and customer dependent.
    Hope it helps

  • Return code in trace file from ST01

    Hello All,
Does anybody know what are the values for the return code (0,4,8,12,16) in an trace file from ST01 ?
    Thanks you All !

seems that you are very bored during the day ....
The ST01 displays the raw data for the ST05, that is something which you will never in normal life. Return codes are also displayed in ST05, but even there you don't really need them.
If you ask this question here in the performance forum then I would definitely advise you to switch to the condensed form of the ST05
    (SQL statement summary) see here:
    SQL trace:
    /people/siegfried.boes/blog/2007/09/05/the-sql-trace-st05-150-quick-and-easy
This condensed forum shows you all the information whioch you need for about 90% of your work.

  • Flash Player is the new malware !

I had a perfectly functional old Flash 10.0.32 with any security holes covered by my Security.protection
When I discovered 36 vulnerabilities I decided to "upgrade",
with no assurance that the latest version did not have at least another 100 vulnerabilities waiting to be discovered and exploited.
I was horrified that you seem to clickjack me.
I thought I was clicking for Flash 10.1, but what you gave the Firefox download manager was a GetPlus download manager.
Why on earth would I want your UNPROVEN download manager, WHICH YOU STATE HAS AN UNPATCHED VULNERABILITY ! !
I only came here to improve security on a dodgy Adobe product for which I have only rare use.
IT IS NOT ACCEPTABLE THAT YOU DUMP ANOTHER HACKERS HIGHWAY ONTO MY SYSTEM.
It is also disgusting that when you gave mme Getplus INSTEAD OF the expected FLASH,
I had to accept this with no assurance that it would finally deliver Flash -
For all I knew you could have been downloading a keylogger and identity theft device.
I also am horrified by your incompetance demonstrated by the new high risk way of doing things :-
You totally failed to perform the download and upgrade after my many repeated attempts.
I gave up trying to upgrade.
Then I found that a site which always worked well now had problems due to my Flash being totally busted by your attempts.
You bungled everything - you even crippled the old version that had been functional.
I finally went back to the old way and uninstalled the broken Flash by using
    http://download.macromedia.com/pub/flashplayer/current/uninstall_flash_player.exe.
I then used the old way of a direct download of Flash 10.1, but again your GetPlus download manager had its evil way.
I now have Flash plugin 10.1.53, and have removed (so far as I can see) your wretched GetPlus virus downloader.
My computer seems to have survived all your exploits,
but I am still steaming over all the needless aggravation Adobe has caused me.
When I was given this P.C. one of the first major bloat things to be un-installed was Adobe Reader.
I did not like a few 100 MBytes of bloat to do what other readers achieve with less than 10 MBytes,
and I especially did not like the fact that by the time Adobe had started up I had forgotten which PDF I needed to read.
With a little more experience I now realise there are far more important reasons to avoid / replace Adobe products.
I am now anxiously waiting for HTLM5 to replace Flash.
    Alan

    Thanks for the information,
but not looking forward to needing it when existing vulnerabilities are identified.
I saw that GetPlus has a vulnerability when I looked at the Adobe FAQ before I allowed GetPlus to invade me.
Google gives 8 results for "getplus vulnerability",
or 43,400 results when omitting the quotes.
The 43,4000 results are reduced to 89 when I use Advanced search to restrict the search to Adobe.com.
I forget the precise phrase I saw in the Adobe FAQ which increased my concern over the GetPlus fellowtraveller,
but it definitely advised that there was an as yet unpatched vulnerability.
I cannot now find the relevant FAQ.
I guess my efforts are hampered by my Honours degree in technology instead of a degree in stupidity.
I am pretty sure that I saw the click opportunity to access the relevant FAQ whilst enroute to actually installing this unwanted downloader,
and I have no wish to go through that aggravation again - but I assure you the admission of this problem does appear on Adobe.com.

  • Questions About Production

I have a client that has asked me to cleanup book files for output to a printer. The container file is an InDesign file with 48 pages that have lots of linked low res graphics. He wants me to convert all the hi res RGB JPG images to CMYK, 300 ppi (no resampling), and tifs.  My questions are as follows:
Would it make sense to setup an action that does all of this at once? (I already set this up and it seems to be working well. But just wanted other's input.)
When converting files from RGB to CMYK, should I go up to Image/Mode/CMYK? Or go to "Convert to profile" or "Assign Profile"?
Should I always embed the CMYK profile? I usually would embed SWOP v2.
If I want an Action to be recorded, for example, if I want to automatically embed the color profile into the image when saving it as a tif, does the first image that I record with need to NOT have an embedded profile? Then once I click the embed profile it will record it? Same with LZW compression, does the first image need to lack LZW compression in order for it to get recorded when I click on it for the first time for that image?
    Thanks for the help!

    • Yes, that would make sense. In combinations with Image Processor or Batch or as a Droplet that should make the task a lot easier. (Personally I would use Scripting but that would hardly pay off for infrequent jobs.)
    • One cannot Assign a CMYK-profile to an RGB-image, Converting is preferable to Mode – CMYK unless You are certain that Your Color Settings fit the requirements exactly. Anyway Assigning Profiles is best avoided unless one has a certain grasp of what that means (changing display without changing pixel values as opposed to converting, where the values are changed to maintain the appearance under different conditions).
    • Embedding seems definitively advisable, otherwise people farther down the production-line will have a hard time ascertaining which print-condition the images were separated for.
    • I don’t think so. Moreover with Image Processor the saving step would not need to be part of the Action.
As regards relinking the images in bulk You might search/or post in the Indesign (Scripting) Forum.

  • How to set up windows 8 to print to printer that is attached to an airport extreme?

    Hello,
Please advise what is the best way to setup my daughters new windows 8 desktop to print to a printer attached to an airport extreme.
I used Bonquir to add the printer but nothing happens when I print something. It does not even register in the print que.
    I obviously am missing something....
    on a second question.
i most often could print from my powerbook... yeah it still works but occationally I have to delete the printer and reinstall it in the priner section of the powerbook.
Please advise what I need to do to make the connection more stable.... it does that once a month or so...
    Thank you

Can windows actually see the printer.
Is it detected and setup ok in windows?
Can you ping the AE? Firewall issues can prevent the print job being processed even if the printer was made available.
How old is this extreme and what firmware?
DId you use correct SMB naming?
If it is Gen1-5 then use the airport utility in windows and you should then be able to see if the printer is actually working from the utility. Printer is no longer even a tab on the new version utility in a Mac.

  • New iPad 1 for $340 or iPad 2

I'm getting frustrated waiting. I do not own an iPad yet and have held out for a while. A local seller has a new 32GB wifi iPad 1 for $340 cash. Not bad. Should I? I'm going to try again tomorrow morning at the Apple store for the iPad 2 ... but I keep thinking how much I'll save on iPad 1 ...
    Another seller has a 64GB wifi/3G iPad 1 for $500 ... also tempting ...

It's really difficult to offer advice when we know nothing about your needs. But if your primary interest is in gaming, then I'd definitely advise the iPad 2. Benchmarks are showing its graphics performance to be much higher than the iPad 1. And of course if the cameras are of interest than the iPad 2 would be a must. For general productivity use - email, notes, web surfing, etc - then the iPad 1 might be just fine for you; mine has been serving me well in that role.
If you can post more about what your needs and likes are, or what is driving you to consider an iPad, we might be able to offer more informed opinions. Ultimately it will come down to what features you need and how much you're willing to spend for them.
    Regards.

  • Grid Control architecture.

Can I have 64 bits primary and 32 bits standby logical server controlled by 32 bits Grid Control.
Primary server (64 bits) + Standby server (logical) 32 bits + Grid Control (32 bits)

    Oliver,
Thanks for the comments. The article is based on practical experience. If one was to recommend a pool of 2 management servers for a large corporate with 1000 servers, what that would mean is that if 1 server was brought down for any maintenance reason (for eg. applying an EM patch), all the EM work load would be on the remaining management server. So it is better to have 3 management servers instead of 2 when the EM system is servicing so many targets. Otherwise, the DBAs would be a tad angry since only 1 remaining managment server would not be able to service them properly during the time of the maintainance fix on the first management server.
The article ends with these words: "You can easily manage hundreds or even *thousands* of targets with such an architecture. The large corporate which had deployed this project scaled easily up to managing 600 to 700 targets with a pool of just three management servers, and the future plan is to manage *2,000 or more* targets which is quite achievable." The 2000 or more is based on the same architecture of 3 managment servers.
So as per the best practice document, 2 management servers would be fine for 1000 servers, although I would still advise 3 servers in practice.
For your case of 200 servers, it depends on the level of monitoring you are planning to do, and the type of database managment activities that
will be done by the DBAs. For eg, if the Dbas are planning on creating standby databases now and then through Grid Control, running backups daily
via Grid Control, cloning databases in Grid Control, patching databases in Grid Control and so on, I would definitely advise a pool of 2 servers
in your case. 2 is always better than 1.
