Powerbook always plugged in AC..

Hello all, i am a newbie here, and i was wondering something. My powerbook is connected to the AC 24/7, and was wondering if it could potentially damage it...Thank you.

Dear All,
I’d like to submit my “Battery Experience” with my 2 weeks old 15” PowerBook G4. During the first 10 days every thing related to the battery was normal compared with my previous experience as a long time user for IBM ThinkPad T43, then all of a sudden I started to suffer the weird symptoms of sudden turn off within minutes when disconnect the power supply and I tried all the tips and tricks mentioned by you and nothing seems to work till yesterday, I decided –for the first time- to start up the calibration process by the book and I noticed a very slight improvement as the battery can handle about ½ an hour running up my PB before turning off again then I left it in sleep mode all night long and started the recharge process in the morning and l left the power connected for 3 hours after the battery indicator shows 100% this process improves the battery life for about 1 hour 15 minutes on battery and I think – as a matter of fact I hope- that the weird battery attitude will become a history.
If this is the case the I must blame Apple people for not mentioning that the battery calibration is extremely important for the battery to behave as it should and not just mention it in owner book as a regular info.
Any ways, wish me luck and I wish you all a very happy new year.

  • Always plugged in- Battery life

    Hi
what will be the effect on my battery if its always plugged in to the charger. I am using my MBP more or less like a desktop these days. charging , removing & again putting the charging lead is frustrating & sometimes i just forget to take the lead out & its there all night.
    what is the ideal recommendation.

    Welcome to the Forums!
Apple recommends a full discharge-charge cycle at least once per month.
    From http://www.apple.com/batteries/notebooks.html:
+For proper maintenance of a lithium-based battery, it’s important to keep the electrons in it moving occasionally. Apple does not recommend leaving your portable plugged in all the time. An ideal use would be a commuter who uses her MacBook Pro on the train, then plugs it in at the office to charge. This keeps the battery juices flowing. If on the other hand, you use a desktop computer at work, and save a notebook for infrequent travel, Apple recommends charging and discharging its battery at least once per month.+
    Hope this helps...

  • Should I always plug my laptop to the charger or should I let the battery die before recharging my laptop

Hi, I have a macbook pro.  I use it a lot for college and I was wondering, should I always plug my laptop to the charger or should I let the battery die before recharging my laptop? Is there a difference?  The battery of my laptop is supposed to last how long?
    Thank you alot!

  • Is it bad for my ipod to be always plugged to my bose sound dock?

I have it always plugged, and when I unplug it, it won't turn off and I have to reset it. Is it bad for the battery or for the ipod itself to be always plugged??
    Thanks a lot.

It isn't bad for the battery
since the charging circuit will only charge the
battery if needed and turn off charging when not
needed, so it won't trickle charge the whole time.
My concern would be for the LCD backlight. It is on
all the time? Like any light, they have a limited
number of hours, either getting dimmer with time or
burning out. So you could be putting unnecessary life
time on the backlight. If it is on, can you go into
the settings of the iPod and turn it off? Or like
when syncing the computer, does the backlight stay on
regardless of the LCD backlight setting on the iPod?
    Patrick
    Hi Patrick,
Thanks for your answer. No, the backlight is not on, actually it turns off about two seconds after starting to play music or whatever.
My concern was because when I take the ipod off the speakers, I have to reset it to turn it off, but I guess it's something not bad for the ipod¿?
    Thanks again.

  • Does your elicenser usb is always plugged in?

I have my registered licence of nexus2 on the key which is always plugged in my MBP.
but when I unplug my elicenser usb key , logic doesn't open.
I'd like to save the license of nexus in my computer without letting the usb plugged vecause it's wasting a usb slot on my mbp
    Can I do that ?
    thanks for your help

    Hi, schubyOne.
The elicencer will offer you a choice when you first get a new licence to either put in on a usb or install a software licence [ a soft licence] onto the computer itself.
When the program starts you should get a box with info about managing, getting new licences or transfering them.
The transferrring section is what you want. It says drag the old licence onto the new destination and follow thr prompts.
If any of this doesn't make sense or you are unsure, contact elicencer support and they will help.
    Good luck with it,
    Regards,
    Scorpii.

  • G4 powerbook adapter plugs/tips

I have had the unfortunate repetitive occasion of seeing the wiring going into the older style G4 powerbook tips gradually get loosened and then break off. I successfully resoldered one of them, but I have at least two others, one of which I tried to break off the plastic cap but then couldn't have possibly rewired it, even though I thought I had the pattern for wire connection points down before doing so.
Is there anyone selling these old G4 plugs, preferably with wires coming out of them? It seems unlikely, but a proper wiring guide or diagram might also be helpful, as I am still doing this on the fly, i.e getting sparks in the dark!
Seems obvious this is one reason Apple switched to a different connector design!!
I still can't understand why there are two wires inside the wire, and sometimes a shielding strand which is like a bald man's last locks. Finally, take note of the fact that the connector plugs look suspiciously like phono plugs/RCA connectors...don't suppose I should use one of those, eh?

    Hi
You should try the Mac PowerBook G4 forum - or -
may be http://www.macfixit.com/ might be able to help.
Yes the old plug is bad. NO You can't use a RCA-plug.

  • Is it okay to leave my MBPr 15" always plugged in to external displays?

I have a 15" MBPr with the 750m. I use it very mainly at my desk, plugged in to two monitors (a 4k display over thunderbolt and a 1080 display over HDMI) as well as other peripherals. The computer is always closed, operating in clamshell mode. I already cycle the battery once every two weeks, charging it fully and then draining it fully, the battery is not what I am wondering about. I am wondering if it is okay to leave my computer plugged in to the monitor and other peripherals while asleep for long periods of time.
I know this should seem like no big deal, but I notice that my mac is always noticeably warm when I wake it up in the morning, sometimes 130-140 F according to the sensors in the computer. At idle, doing nothing while awake the computer sits at 115-120. Is this a problem or is this normal? It doesn't seem normal...

I don't think your monitors and peripherals have anything to do with this heat problem. Make sure you go to Apple (symbol at top left) > sleep when you are not using the laptop. This prevents from any background programs from heavily using the CPU or other components. If that doesn't work, open activity monitor and click on the "CPU" tab and check if a program is using a lot of your processing program. If that program is a known program to you and you know it is supposed to be using resources more heavily, leave it running. If the program is unknown to you and you feel that it could be a background application that is unwanted, quit the process. Try to avoid quitting system programs; those are needed and can sometimes, but rarely, use up quite some CPU. But that is usually only when you instructed it to do so; for example copying gigabytes of files to a disk.
Lots of info here, but hope this helps! Ask any further questions that you may have!

  • Will using always plugged in my laptop harm my battery?

    Hi,
This kind of question has been around many years. All smart charger and smart batteries now know how to keep themselves in good sahpe. Batteries life depends on the number of charging cycles. No one can say in concrete because there are few factors which can change. Please read the following articles.

  • Powerbook always crashes when awaking from safe sleep

    Hi,
my Powerbook (late 2005) went into safe sleep a few hours ago, and every time I try to wake it up, it has an odd looking kernel panic (text off half a screen to the left).
When starting up, I cannot go into Open Firmware, reset the Parameter RAM, display the boot options or boot into single user mode. No matter what keys I press, it's directly waking up from safe sleep and crashes halfway through.
No external hardware is attached. It crashes regardless whether it's on battery or not. I upgraded the memory two years ago, and since then some parts have been replaced in AppleCare. I'm not aware I used safe sleep before, so I dont't know if it worked before.
    Any ideas?
Message was edited by: Daniel Beck (added note that it crashes both on ac and dc power)

Fixed the problem by simply removing one of the RAMs. Probably has invalidated the sleepimage, but I'm not sure. ANyway, it works again.

  • IPhone 4 audio behaving like has headphones always plugged in

    Hello.
I have an iPhone 4. Software version is 4.3.5.
I currently have the sound button on. No headphones plugged. When push the sound button up or down, I have on scree the usual volume screen, however, it says ringer (headphones) instead of just ringer.
I have no sounds coming from apps (notifications...) and no sound coming from locking (it is set on on the settings). I cannot listen to the iPod music without headphones (no sound comes out of speakers). I only have these sounds when I plug headphones and the sounds come via headphones.
Also, if I have the iPod on, with headphones, the iPod does not turn off when I remove headphones.
I already switched it off and tried forced reset.
Any ideas to solve this, please?
    Thank you

Well guess what. My problem is fixed. Something to think about. After several days of frustration I found that the problem was with my new Mophie Battery. I contacted Mophie and they sent me a replacement and ever since the phone has worked just fine. The Customer Service from Mophie was outstanding.

  • Battery Issue - ipod always plugged

    hi everyone,
here's the deal: i have very few music in my pc, but i have a lot in my 30 gb video ipod. i want to know if having the ipod constantly plugged to the pc to hear the ipod's mp3 has any significant negative effect on the ipod's battery. anyone knows anything about this?

    thanks mitch
but still...the battery stops charging once its full...but, if i constantly hear songs from the ipod, it has to use the ipods power, hence the battery is constantly getting charged and slightly used, charged, and so on...
it might sound like i'm being too careful, but i would really like to sort this out and have the ipod plugged to the pc all the time.

  • Battery health when always plugged

    Hi,
I have X230 with 6-cell battery. Now most of the time the laptop is plugged to the power. What is the best power plan to keep the battery healthy?
    should I remove the battery?
    Thanks,
    Abed.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

What I do is I click the lenovo battery button and set it to start charging when my battery is below 85% and will stop charging when it  hits 89%. This keeps it from going through so many more battery cycles i think.

  • Powerbook always ejects disk at startup

My 12" Powerbook has started ejecting any inserted disk at startup and I am therefore unable to install a new os on it. Can anyone help?

It says it thinks the mouse button or trackpad button is being tapped at startup. That's the command to eject at startup. If neither is obviously the case, you may have a hardware issue with the drive or the input device for the computer.

  • AC Adaptor Always plugged in

Is it okay to always use the AC adaptor instead of using your batteries all the time? Is this harmful?

Yes, it's quite OK. It will not harm the battery. Use the adaptor anytime it's convenient.

  • Simple Question: does a PB draw power when charged fully and sleeping?

    Hello there, Ladies and Gentlemen,...
    here is a question I propose : Does a Powerbook G4 15" Alu 1.33ghz
still draw power when plugged into a 64W adaptor when the light
has gone green and the battery appears to be charged? in Sleep mode?
I heard that the apple products are "smart" and don't become electrity
vampires and will not draw more current than needed to charge the battery.
I don't have a meter , but is this true? I typically leave the powerbook always
plugged in sleep mode at nite, for the battery to charged overnite while not in use.
I want to conserve a little energy here.
    all the best,
    sir double null

It is smart in that sense. Feel the brick to convince yourself.
When the level gets below 94% or so, it will begin charging back to 100%.
