Powerbook and Linksys print server

Hello All,
I have a question which I believe I know what he answer is. I have a new Powerbook. right now, I am using a Linksys Print Server connected to a Epson inkjet printer. This is networked in my home windows environment. When you add a new pc etc, the Epson drivers are installed first than the Print server drivers. However, it seems there are no Mac driver etc for the Print server per Linksys. So basically, am I stuck with adding a dedicated printer to the powerbook or taking the print server out of the equasion here and letting one of my windows pc be the print server. No an option that I really wanted.
Thanks,
AlRoz

Al,
Before you do all that, try some of the options Tiger gives you. In the Applications folder there is a Utilities Folder. In there there is a Printer Setup Utility. Open it, and click Add. At the top there is a Default Browser and IP Printer. Click IP Printer. In this window you should be able to set up the connections so your powerbook can talk to your printer thru the ethernet printer server.
Hope this helps

  • Printing on an established network with a linksys print server and an HP

I am really tired of this. After 4 months of searching through discussions, I still cannot get my new Mac Pro to print to my HP printer on a linksys print server. Nothing I've tried through the discussions works. Every other PC in the network can do so. I would call someone or open a chat, but I can't find either of those on the Apple sites either. Someone please help before I give up on Apples!

Okay, I was able to complete the Adding of a printer and selecting the PPD using "Other". Here's some lines from the cups error log (more than 5 lines), but it's all Greek to me.

  • Can't print from Mac to DeskJet D1530 over Linksys print server

The print job and printer both hang when trying to print to the DeskJet D1530.
I am using the drivers downloaded directly from HP and specifically for Snow Leopard.
When connected directly via USB, the printer installs itself and prints reliably.
However, this is a shared printer. The Mac has a wireless-G connection to a Linksys router, the router is connected to a Linksys print server via Ethernet. Then the printer is connected via USB to the print server.
I have 2 Windows laptops that print reliably via this configuration.
With the Mac, I configured it to use LPR over the IP address of the print server. It seems to connect to the print server and appears to be communicating with the printer. It even reports the ink levels in the cartridges. But when a print job is sent to the printer, the print status reports "Sending data file (0 bytes)" and the job just hangs unless a "cancel -a" is sent via terminal. It also prevents any other system from printing unless the printer and the print server are power cycled. I have occasionally coaxed a job out of the printer after the print server is power-cycled, however from the Mac's printer status, the job never completes and any subsequent print jobs will hang. I have to reboot the Mac to completely clear the print queue.
I have look online for instructions on configuring the printer, but all of them so far have yielded the same result.
This is not exactly an exotic setup, and it works with Windows systems. What am I doing wrong?

It usually comes as a surprise to Windows users that there are two kinds of print drivers on OS X. The older type are called monolithic drivers because they have everything in one package - postscript interpreter and communication device (USB) driver. With this type, the manufacturer gets to include exactly the components needed for the printer. The driver you got from HP is this type, and it is limited to USB Only.
To do network printing to a USB printer, you need a driver that allows more than just USB direct connection. You need a CUPS driver. One CUPS driver is Gutenprint, included in OS X by Apple. It may not include your model yet.
Get updated Gutenprint or hpijs drivers from:
    http://www.linuxfoundation.org/collaborate/workgroups/openprinting/macosx
or a commercial CUPS driver, printfab from:

  • Epson Stylus Photo R1800 on Linksys Printer server

hi, I'm currently running Tiger 10.4.11 on my power book G4 and trying to connect to a network printer on a Linksys Print Server (PSUS4). The printer connected to the server is an Epson Stylus Photo R1800.
I'm able to print perfectly from my computer via USB direct, but when I try to find the printer as a network printer I can't locate it.
The print utilities finds the location of printer from the Linksys server, but none of my drivers are coming up that are compatible to the printer when it finds it like that.
When the printer is turned on the print browser cannot find it at all, but when it's turned off the browser comes up with the name Linsys gave it to be discovered. It says it's connected via AppleTalk, but when I click on it to try to add the driver doesn't come up. BUT it's the correct driver when I connect manually.
What am I doing wrong? I was on the phone with tech support for an hour and 24 minutes only to be told (when transferred to a specialist) that they aren't trained for this kind of thing, neither is Linksys (who I spoke to for 30 minutes). I read the thread on the similar issue to this and don't think that it's a driver issue, but a print server issue, what do you think??
    thanks for any help.
    -melissa

Driver issue - the driver provided by Epson was written for USB only (well, maybe Firewire too for the 1800). You will have to use either the Gutenprint driver or the printfab driver for network printing:
    http://gimp-print.sourceforge.net/MacOSX.php3
    http://www.printfab.net
Sounds like your print server will work via appletalk -- but, if you want to try IP printing, don't forget to enter the correct queue name for the LPD and IPP protocols.

  • Linksys Print Server Problem

    Platform Ver. 11.1.8350.0
    Windows XP SP3
    Linksys Print Server WPS54G
    Linksys Router, RangePlus Wireless G
When I run the Linksys Print Server software to add a computer, nothing happens.  When I run the software to locate the print server, nothing happens.
Network Magic recognizes the computer, the router and the print server.  I can access the print server admin from NW Magic, and the computer, but not the router.
I am printing remote from other computers on the wireless nw, but cannot remote print from this computer.
I have uninstalled and reinstalled NW Magic, and added the exception to the firewall.
    Thanks for any help.

Hi bobtex, are you using Windows Firewall or a 3rd party one like McAfee, Norton or ZoneAlarm?
    My Cisco Network Magic Configuration:
Router: D-Link WBR-2310 A1 FW:1.04, connected to Comcast High Speed Internet
Desktop, iMac: NM is on the Windows Partition, using Boot camp to access Windows, Windows 7 Pro 32-bit RTM, Broadcom Wireless N Card, McAfee Personal Firewall 2009,
Mac Partition of the iMac is using Mac OS X 10.6.1 Snow Leopard
Laptop: Windows XP Pro SP3, Intel PRO/Wireless 2200BG, McAfee Personal Firewall 2008
Please note that though I am a beta tester for Network Magic, I am not a employee of Linksys/Cisco and am volunteering my time here to help other NM users.

  • Can't print through Linksys Print Server with PowerMac G5

Just wondering if anyone out there has been able to print using their PowerMac while spooling through a print server, specifically a Linksys PSUS4? I have a desktop and a laptop PC and a PowerMac g5 1.6Ghz and a MacBook Pro 2.0Ghz and only the HP laptop is able to print when my Epson R340 printer is routed through the print server.
I was using a Belkin switchbox to switch between USB hubs when printing with the desktop computers and this worked fine, other than having to remember to switch the connection when using a different computer.
Since then, I have added a Linksys wireless G router and a Linksys PSUS4 print server to allow the two laptops to print wirelessly. Now the only machine I can print from is the HP PC laptop. Neither desktop can print, nor my Macbook.
I am trying to use GIMP to print with my G5. When I send a jpb, it spools all the way through the job, but the printer never responds or prints a single sheet.
    Again, I am using a PowerMac G5, 1.6Ghz and MacOS 10.4.8.
Any help anyone can give would be greatly appreciated!
    PowerMac G5 1.6Ghz   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   Also using MacBook Pro 2.0Ghz

I've only been able to get it to work with my wife's HP laptop. So far, GIMP priting with the Mac is a no-go. It spools, but the printer just sits there.
As of now, I'm trying to print from my wife's desktop, which is an older model eMachines 1.1Ghz with XP Professional. Right now, it's just sitting there with a "Printing" window.
I have called Linksys, but to no avail. Couldn't understand they guy was speaking with. According to a networking friend of mine, there must be a PC host machine which is on all the time which acts as a "bridge" to get the files to the printserver. I don't know about that, but my father-in-law uses a PSUS4 to print wirelessly from 2 PC laptos with no problems.
Gonna try calling Linksys back and see if I get anywhere with that. If not, we'll try another route.
I'll post with what I find out.

  • Linksys Print Server EPSX3 Drivers Needed

Hello, we need Print Server drivers for the Linksys Wired Print Server, Model EPSX3, Version 1, for Windows XP Professional, X64 Edition, running on an Intel Dual Core Motherboard. We have owned this for many years and are satisfied with it's performance and would like to continue using it. The other computer running on this particular Print Server is a Compaq laptop with Intel Processor, running Windows Vista Basic (x32). The printer we are using with it primarily is a Brother HL-1440 with other printers Epson Stylus 300 Inkjet and a Citizen Dot Matrix. Thank you for your help. The regular Linksys drivers will not function with the x64 architecture. Please email privately or post on this forum.

Same as the posting for schlem1984 “Hello, we need Print Server drivers for the Linksys Wired Print Server, Model EPSX3, Version 1, for Windows XP Professional, X64 Edition, running on an Intel Dual Core Motherboard. (do not click Automatically detect.....; click Next, then Create a New Port and click Printserver into the window provided.  [Printserver will not be and option if the driver is not installed.]  Once Printserver is in the option window, click Next and proceed with setting up the second port using BROWSE to find the Device Name (mine is SCA14317; however when BROWSE finds it is shows SCA14317 192.168.0.3).  Enter the port you want to set up, such as SCA14317_P3 and proceed.  That works great for me using Windows XP, but the same approach will not work with Vista.  I'm fighting that now and think I have a solution to try that might work.”
I have yet to try the possible fix from fktoml but will try that soon.  I was hoping for a simpler solution…… If that fails I will have to buy a new print server that supports older parallel printers as well as the newer USP printers.

  • Macpro and adhoc print server

I am trying to setup a Linksys printserver in adhoc mode using a MacBook Pro. I have searched the internet for directions and can not find any.
Here is what I am trying to do. My daughter will be going to college in the fall. I thought it would be nice if she didn't have to plug into her printer when she needed to print something. The university has a wireless network but obviously I can't add the printer to that. So, I thought a wireless printserver would be the way to go. The linksys says it will work in adhoc mode and thus does not need a wireless network to operate. However, there aren't any directions included with the unit to set this up. Any assistance would be appreciated.
I briefly looked at bluetooth but it would be extremely slow and not provide a print buffer so I dismissed it quickly. Is this a better solution?

Sorry, I'm not going to give you any adhoc mode help.
But I will tell you that how easy and how well it works is dependent on the printer model. The Linksys uses standard protocols that the Mac can use - but to use those protocols, the Mac requires a CUPS driver for your printer model. Manufacturer-provided drivers aren't CUPS drivers (postscript printers avoid any hassles because they are automatically CUPS-compatible). Apple included the third-party Gimp-Print (CUPS) drivers for lots of non-postscript printers, but you need to be forewarned that quality with third-party (free) drivers is almost always less than OEM drivers.
This isn't an advertisement, but I want to explain that Mac-to-Mac sharing and Mac to Airport Express/Extreme printing avoid the problem by using a proprietary comm protocol that essentially redirects the USB driver output to the other computer/Airport print server. So an Airport Express print server is often better for Mac users. I personally don't have one....
    So, what printer is it?

  • WPSM54G Linksys print server

I am trying to get this WPSM54G print server to work with my new macbook. It works with 2 other XP PC on the network. I have tried to get help on the linksys forums, but no luck. I have tried everything listed in this link:
    http://defenestrated.typepad.com/defenestrated/2007/06/howto_configure.html
I have a Canon Pixma iP1500. I have also installed PrintFab as another recommendation to get this print server to work.
    Please help!!!
    Macbook   Mac OS X (10.4.10)

Try using queue name P1 - often used by Linksys.
You can check what exact comm protocol is used on Windows. highlight the printer and right-click to select printer properties. Go to the advanced tab and then click on Configure port. There it will tell you LPR or raw port 9100. If it is LPR, there will be a queue name. If port 9100, there is no queue name and this equals HP Jetdirect protocol on OS X.

  • Linksys Print Server

I am using a mac mini Intel. I had a print server going for a while, a linksys PSUSU4. It just stopped working. I finally discovered that I had a power outage and the IP address changed (I have not figured out how to assign a static IP yet). I know it is working because I can print from my windows machine.
I set it up as follows. In the Printer setup utility I choose IP Printer. I put in the IP address which I know is correct. In the que I put lp. I am just leaving the name as the IP address. In location I put the IP address and and then I choose the printer which is a HP Officejet d135, it is listed.
When I try to print I think it sees the printer and then I get printer busy retry in 10 seconds. I have turned everything off turned it on, made sure nothing else is running etc. Same thing.
    I am running OS X 10.4.6.
I am following the directions exactly the same as last time but the result is not the same.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
    TIA

    Hello!
I have been trying all day (really!!!!) to get my Linksys PrintServer up and going. I've been trying to add my printer (HP DeskJet 940c) and nothing! Oh, it shows up on the list but is checked but greyed out. Can ANYONE help me get set up? I have tried everything I can possibly think of and tried all the suggestions posted in "Discussions" to no resolution. Of course one can only get so far with the techies at Linksys. I'm simply at my wit's end!
    Thanks in advance!

  • Wps54G linksys print server

Anybody had success with any of the available apps printing via a wireless print server? server and set up works fine for 2 pcs, but so far, I can't seem to get any of the print apps to find it, much less the printer.

I actually have that router and an old HP printer and am able to successfully print from my IPad (Pages, Numbers, Safari, eMail and Keynote). I use no special apps.
But unlike the configuration in your original post, my printer is connected (wired) to the router via USB cable. Plus, my computers are all PCs. So, that may be where our similarities end.
For me, the fist sep was to configure my wired printer to the router and successfully print from all of my wireless computers in the house. I set up that print server years ago and followed the instructions for setting up a print server from the Linksys site and router documentation. This is really a separate task from the real deal, which is getting the IPad to print acros the wireless network.
The second step was labor intense for me, because every step in the process required me to learn something new along the way. For example, I had to research how to log on to my own computer as an administrator to perform one of the steps. My point is, if you don't have the aptitude or patience to perform a task from pretty vague instructions, you'll get frustrated.
The instructions that I followed to enable printinfrom my IPad are at the following URL:
    http://jaxov.com/2010/11/how-to-enable-airprint-service-on-windows/
Here's the URL for Mac configurations:
    http://jaxov.com/2010/11/how-to-enable-airprint-service-on-mac-os-x-10-6-5/
For the Windows site, there are lots of questions and answers at the bottom of the instructions.

Installed std vista local driver for hp5550 printer with usb cable direct to printer.  Works ok
Then, disconnected usb copper line to HP labtop and connected it into print server in router (D-link router to HP5500 printer).
Installed wireless network driver in labtop (vista os)(no updated hp driver available for Vista on HP site).

  • HP DeskJet 712c Driver and Wireless Print Server Setup

I have recently purchased a MacBook Pro and am unable to setup my printer to print. Previous to using the MacBook Pro I was using a windows machine without any trouble printing to this printer, however now I can't locate the printer on a list of pre-installed drivers for Mac. I've already checked HP's website and was unable to find any drivers that were for Mac OS. What is a good alternative driver source? Once I do get the driver what would my next steps need to be to set up the wireless print server to work with my mac?
    Printer: HP DeskJet 712c
    Wireless Print Server: D-Link DP-311P
I would be grateful for guidance to go about this process so that I can use my printer again.
    MacBook Pro 2.16GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

HP-provided drivers don't support network printing. You'll need to install Foomatic (a PPD interpreter), ESP ghostscript (postscript translator) and the 712c PPD from:
    http://www.linuxprinting.org/macosx/foomatic/
    http://www.linuxprinting.org/showprinter.cgi?recnum=HP-DeskJet712C
Then, since we don't have the auto-setup software for OS X, you need to review the print server manual and find out which IP printing protocol to use. The easiest is HP Jetdirect (called TCP/IP raw port printing in many manuals) if it's available, because it doesn't require the device queue name.
    Good luck.
