Powerbook as temporary display for G5

My 20" display has developed a hazy shadow and I'd like to take it to be repaired. I have a 17" G4 powerbook and would like to be able to use it as a display for my G5 while the 20" is being repaired. Is this something I can do and how?
Thanks
  Mac OS X (10.4.6)

This is not possible, but you may install VNC on your G5 and use it from you powerbook using a VNC client. It will be a little bit slower but functionnal

  • Using 02/03 PowerBook as supplementary display for MacBook Pro (original)

A friend recently mentioned that i might be able to use my old powerbook as a supplementary display for the newest addition to my Mac family.
can anyone tell me if this is true and if so, how to do it?
Also, i signed up to this site before i upgraded and i have tried changing my profile to reflect the upgrade, but when i post, i still have to change the model and OS fields under the message field... Why is this so?

Wow! this is hectic! thanks for that. but i have a follow up question, i notice it has a limited life for free. how long will the free version last? i am prepareed to pay for it, but as i am a student, cant just yet, i probably need until about December and i'll be right, will it last that long?
also, about the 'model' and 'OS' fields? can they be updated centrally, or do i have to keep changing it every time i ask/answer a question?

  • Using a second Mac as a display for a first

This Frequently answered question (FAQ) comes about:
Can an iMac/iBook/Powerbook/MacBook act as a display for another Mac since they all have a built-in display?
The truth is complicated because you have to consider who is doing the processing, and who has the drivers for the work being done.
    1. For people who want the processing power of multiple Macs together, there is
    Daugerresearch.com's Pooch.
    2. Apple's Target Disk Mode lets you treat the hard disk of one Mac as an external drive to another. You do have to be careful with this, only the Mac that is currently booted to an active screen has its drivers enabled. If you need the drivers of the other Mac to do some sort of installation, it may not work right, or if you need it to run specific software.
    3. The iMac 27" now has a DisplayPort Input port that allows displaying from a second Mac. See Using a 27-inch iMac as an external display. There are some hurdles to get there, however some third party solutions for those hurdles are listed on:
    http://lowendmac.com/ed/bashur/09db/dvi-to-mini-displayport.html
    4. If you have a second screen to initially setup a Mac as a server of some sort you can make it "headless" (i.e. no second screen necessary) using one of these solutions:
    iChat Screen Sharing
    OSX VNC
    Netopia's Timbuktu
    Apple Remote Desktop
    Microsoft Remote Desktop
    Screen Recycler
    Finder Screen Sharing
The speed of your network though can make such solutions appear too slow for words. If you use IP over Firewire on Mac OS X
10.5, 10.4, or 10.3 reasonable speeds can be obtained.
Elgato makes Firewire compatible capture devices which can capture S-Video. If you output the video of that Mac to an S-Video connector, you can view its video on the Elgato capture screen in 720 x 480 resolution. This usually is too little real estate for an effective second display, but for some it may be the quickest solution available.
In addition, Mac Minis, Intel based iMacs and Mac Pros do accept any display that supports VGA or DVI. Contrary to what you might think, you aren't stuck to Apple's displays. The Apple displays themselves are true Progressive LCDs that are widescreen with color matching, extra ports, and an extra place to put an iSight mount if you can find an original iSight. DVI supports more resolutions, and dual-link DVI even more.

    Hi Brian,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.  You can mirror the displays or make whichever display you want the primary in Extended Desktop mode.  See this article for details:
How to use multiple displays with your Mac
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5019
The white bar at the top of the left blue box represents the menu bar and determines which display is your primary display. To change your primary display, click the white bar and drag and drop it on the blue box representing the display you would prefer to be your primary display.

  • Air Display for Windows 7 not working

I recently installed Air Display v1.6.1 for my iPad 2 and Air Display for Windows.
Both my laptop and iPad are connected to the same WiFi.
Whenever I click on my iPad's name in Air Display on my laptop, nothing happens. My iPad's screen still stays on the Air Display instruction screen with no flashing of the screen as I see on YouTube videos. Any help would be appreciated .

    Hi,
Have a new IMac and am trying to get Isight working in a Parallels Windows 7 VM environment.
Isight works fine in Mac OS (Skye, Oovoo, etc).
Tried to install the drivers from the Mac OS disk (appleisightinstaller.exe) and they appear to be installed okay.
BUT, while the device exists, I cant see any picture or when I click on settings get no settings to change. Additionally, the Isight led on the device never comes on.
Anyone got any ideas as to what I should do.
    I have tried:
    1. De-installing the driver and reinstalling
    2. Have edited the registry in Windows to delete all references
The reason I would like to get this working is I am trying to use Polycom PVX video conferencing software (I need it for work) and so my idea was to run it in a Parallels VM as its only available for Windows.
    Hope you can help

I don't use Windows®, but here are a couple things to consider if you have not already done so and do not get better help here.
    (1) Does this help you? http://kb.parallels.com/5028
    (2) Consider XMeeting as a possible OSX alternative for connecting to your work's Polycom system:

  • G4 Powerbook + 24" LED Display: Compatible?

Is my Powerbook G4 1Mhz compatible with the Apple 24" LED display (#A1267)?
If not, what would be the most advanced display I can hook up to my Powerbook without trouble?
    Thanks,
    PP

Mating the G4 with an LED 24" : will it be an acceptable resolution, on par with that of the previous generation LCD displays (for example, the 23" Apple Cinema)?
You're likely better off with a different display.
Must I use a converter gadget at all?
    Yes.
do I have to go through complicated conversions and lossy resolution with a 23" LCD display?
For best results, pick one with a DVI connection and an optimum resolution of 1600x1200 or smaller.

  • G3 Powerbook as external display?

Is this even possible? I know about the patch to make the iMac spanning to any external monitor, but I have a G3 that I'd like to make a use of. Thanks!

No, it's not possible to use your PowerBook display as an external display for another computer.

  • Powerbook G4 12 " display is low res and faint

    Dear Gurus of such things,
My Powerbook G4 12" display goes into some kind of low res and faint display after restarting. After days of this, it will suddenly become high res and clear again, for no reason that I can tell. It also recovers after my Powerbook has been connected to a projector.
Is there some way to fix this poor display after restarting without connecting it to a projector?
    Thanks Scotianova

  • Use laptop display for dual display

I'm working on a G5 w/ artisan monitor and want some extra screen real estate. I have a G4 power book and wondered if I can somehow use the screen on the laptop as a dual display for the G5? Both run OSX tiger.

    Hi Virginia,
    Welcome to the discussions.
As far as I am aware, the graphics cards on the powerbooks enable you to run a second display from the laptop, but only as a "mirrored" (i.e. identical picture) of the main display on the laptop. For extra screen real estate, you need fully independant operation, and that can't happen.
Also, I don't think you can use the screen off the laptop as a "passive" display, as there is no practical way of supplying the correct video input to your laptop display from the second graphics port of the G5.
For these two reasons, I believe that what you are considering will not be possible.
    Cheers!

  • Powerbooks and external displays

    Hello there guys.
I currently have the 20inch iMac and am in my final year as an undergraduate. I have applied for a PhD which involves a lot of travel and I was thinking about a laptop/monitor combination... to use the laptop as a HD and to power ta screen from which I did most of my work and allowed myself to have correct posture etc etc and a larger workspace, but I obviously do not want to have a piece of equipment which will overheat.
Are the powerbooks ok in doing this? I would have a keyboard and mouse set up too. I'll probably have an external HD to store large amounts of data on such as music etc...
    thanks in advance, martin

Sorry Irwin, needa divert abit from your topic =p
I'm currently looking into buying a 12" pb for my 1st mac.
Had handson on the OS with my friend's mac mini and is very impress with the OS overall. Its so simple to use and its so cute..^_^
Basically, I will be using for school work (Ms Words, excel, ppt) which mac has the ms version and some home video and photo editings and I will be upgrading the ram to 1GB. Thus I think the powerbook will be sufficient for me. and looking at the posts, I guessed my choice is more or less pb to the new macbk pro as Ii think I will not want to run into non-UB applications =p. (do advice me otherwise ^_^)
Two questions I have about the external display and the heat - I am looking into connecting the 12" pb to a TV set instead of LCD monitor. I had tried with my friend's mac mini and it works. and my friend keep his mac mini on 24/7, no problem so far.
I am lking into working long hrs for reports on the pb (not 24/7 though)and I don't want my screen and motherboard to 'blow up' as my previous NEC laptop (an event of 1 wk 24/7 usage when rushing reports on a 3-4 yr old nec laptop) =p
Will the pb be too heated up and spoil the screen and motherboard on events of long usage hrs without external screens?
Another concern is when I connect the laptop to the TV set, will it work with the lid close (as in the screen on pb itself will be off & I view directly from the tv)? This is coz I came across this article on web saying
"My next attempt was to connect the MacBook Pro to my TV set with the lid closed. So I closed the lid, putting the computer to sleep. No problem — I pressed the center button on the Apple remote, which woke up the computer… for about 10 seconds, before it went right back to sleep. This is consistent with the behavior I’ve seen on PowerBooks, but it’s a little frustrating. It should be easy to run the MacBook Pro in lid-closed mode via the remote control. Instead, in order to wake the MacBook Pro up and keep it awake, I had to attach a USB mouse."

Can someone help me clerify these questions before I make a purchase? =p
    Thanks a million. =)

  • Is there a way to create a custom screensaver with pics/slides that display for different amounts of time?

Is there a way to create a custom screensaver with pics/slides that display for different amounts of time? Or even add a "video slide" into the screensaver?
My business has 3 TVs displayed in our lobby, each with its own apple TV and they are all linked to the same photo stream. Currently the Atv screensaver displays the photostream pictures of our products for the default 3 seconds. We just added pics/slides that now display messages and useful info for our customers but I want that info to be displayed for a longer period of time than the pictures to give people a chance to read it.
I tried using flickr and powerpoint as a work around but no luck.  I created a slide in powerpoint with play length of 15 secs and saved it as a wmv file.  I added that file to a "screensaver" set in flickr and pointed the Atv screensaver to that flickr set.  It still displays everything, pics and the wmv file at the default 3 sec.
I know I can increase the duration of all pics in the screensaver to display for longer but the goal is to have the pics display at 3 secs and the info slides to display at 15 secs.

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
    No that's not possible.
If you have any suggestions that you think might enhance the Apple TV you can send Apple your feedback here

  • Values not getting displayed for members which doesnt have parents

    Hi
I created a product dimension with 4 levels .For members which doesnt have parents, data is not getting displayed in JavaClient.
The values for members which doesnt have parents are getting displayed in the view created for the measures which are dimensioned by Product .I mapped the same view in the CWM2 work space ,but value is not getting displayed for members which doesnt have parents ,but values are getting displayed for members which have parents for measures.
Is it a bug , we were able to do it in Express ..
Can anybody help us in doing this.??
    Thnx in Advance......

    Hi,
This assumes that the members which do not have parents are mapped to the top level in the hierarchy. If they are at a level below the top level then they are not part of the hierarchy and therefore would not be displayed. So this sounds like expected behaviour.
    Hope this helps

  • Text caption set up to display for all of slide

    hello
i'm using captivate 5 and have another query.
is there a way to automatically set up text captions to display for the whole slide not a specific time? I know how to set this, but to go through and do this for every text caption is proving to be very time consuming.
look forward to hearing from you.

The Timing accordion of the Text caption could allow you to apply the setting 'For rest of slide' to all text captions (use the curved arrow, highlighted in screenshot), but the drawback is that this timing accordion also has the start time that will then be applied to all text captions, which is not always what you'll want. So for the example of the screenshot, all text captions would get a start at 4,5secs if I applied this setting to all.
If you want all future Text Captions in all projects to have the setting 'For rest of slide' make changes to the Preferences before opening a project.
