Powerbook Backlight Inverter Datasheet

I'm trying to find a datasheet or the output pinout for the Apple Part #922-6421 (Backlight Inverter board) that's in my 12" Powerbook. It has four wires (Green, Yellow, Black, Red). I've been looking around and contacting people who carry the part but no luck so far.
If anyone has the information or could point me in the right direction I would really appreciate it!

Thanks for the response, but every part sold in quantity by a manufacturer to a company will have a data sheet. As far as not needing it, I agree that it would most likely be easier to replace the whole inverter than to test to see what specifically failed, but the information exists.

  • Expected Signal Voltages on backlight inverter?

I think my backlight inverter has blown in my PowerBook G4 12 inch DVI.. The part has 820-1567-A stamped on it but it is listed in the service manual as a 922-6247.
I've buzzed out the logic board and the inverter with my scope and have now hit the net hoping to find someone who knows what the nominal voltages for the inverters lines actually are so I can reference the specs to my diagnosis... I don't really follow Apples approach of replace this, oops it popped, replace this and this till the unit works... Going via their service manual & Especially on my own gear!!
If you know the voltages - I would love to compare my units levels to the info you have... ANYONE OUT THERE???
My logic board to inverter socket has:
    1 - RED +0.7V AT ZERO BRIGHTNESS AND +0.7V ALSO AT 100%(BUCKS V+ REFERENCE??)
    2 - BLACK 0V REF GROUND
    3 - YELLOW +5V SUPPLY
4- GREEN 0V AT ZERO BRIGHTNESS AND +3.2V AT 100% BRIGHTNESS (CONTROL LINE).
Going from those results my LOGIC BOARD is A.O.K I THINK!!
    Inverter has:
    0 - 2V entering the transformer and only 4.9-5.5VAC exiting it - I would have expected 180 - 300 VAC...
The coil measures 628 Ohm to ground on the HV side and 2 Ohms exists on the primary coil <- The coil could be OK or dead (need to refer to data or a good inverter...)
Output Transistors look OK - have not tested them though...
Has anyone else put a meter or scope across their inverter?? Your results would be much appreciated!!
    e

SOLVED!! The backlight is working again!!
All the lines had the correct voltage levels and signaling apart from the RED line. It was not a reference but a +12 volt supply. The thermal fuse on the logic board was blown so I replaced it, the inverter gets power and we have light!
The fault was caused (I think) by:
a lag in the OS/Firmware - bottleneck somewhere - when the brightness was adjusted during the lockup, the keyboard commands were cached and created a dump of hardware conditions. The inverter in turn tried to adjust itself once the bottleneck cleared - all within an instant - demanding a few seconds of swinging current that spiked the thermal fuse into its afterlife... The lesson is - press the button once and not 500 times!!

  • PowerPC G4 - backlight inverter

    Dear all,
I have an old G4 with a studio 17'' monitor. It seems that I'm having a backlight inverter problem. The monitor light blinks 2x short and 1x long. Besides that, the brightness is lower, specially on the lower half of the display. The strange thing is that when my computer returns from sleep, the brightness stays correct (lighter and uniform on the entire display) for about half of a second.
I wanted to check with you guys whether i could have a problem not related to the hardware.
    Thanks a lot!
    Daniel

That monitor is infamous for failure. It even had it's own lawsuit:

  • Powerbook backlight - turns on with computer, then goes out

    Hi All,
I'm having trouble with my Powerbook G4's (DVI, 667MHz) backlight.
The problem is this: On power-up, the backlight turns on, then goes out, never to come on again.
I've swapped the inverter and cable, but the problem persists.
    Any thoughts?
Thanks in advance for your help.

    Hello everyone,
I think I might have the same problem. When I open my Powerbook the backlight will turn on for about a second and then turn off. Nothing seemed to help it, it would just return randomly after restarting, letting it rest for a while, plugging into external monitor. I took it to a genuis bar last year and they couldn't figure it out and wanted to send the hard drive to be reformatted. I couldn't part with it so I kept it with the problems.
I figured out that when it's plugged into a power supply it is more likely to shut off. But other than that, I have no idea what it is, and at times it is still random. Does the power supply have anything to do with the inverter board? Sorry for my ignorance, I am not tech savvy.
    Any ideas?

  • Early 2009 MacBook backlight inverter problem?

My early 2009 MacBook is having a bit of trouble with the display backlight. Nowadays in order to get the backlight to turn on I need to fiddle around with the display until it comes on, then I have to keep it steady or it may go out again. I have traced the problem to the backlight, because when my screen blacks out if I look real closely or shine a light on it, I can see the stuff on the screen.
I know this can be fixed. I do not want to risk opening the MacBook to do so, because I could probably break something (this once happened when I attempted to repair a PowerBook G4; I wound up disabling the Wi-Fi.) I did hear from someone who had the same problem with the same model early this year, he took it to his nearest Apple Store, and even though it was no longer under warranty, it only cost $45 for the inverter to be replaced! (It also had a chipped palmrest and that helped with the fee too; mine has a somewhat chipped palmrest as well.) Does Apple really do something like that, or would I be better off with a local computer repair shop?
    Plrease reply ASAP

The inverter regualtes the power to the back light,  i had macbook 2008 inverter break on me and attempted the fix myself.  £10 ($15) for the inverter on ebay and about an hour of my time.  The reason its a tricky fix is because the inverter is in the hinge of the screen so the whole screen needs to be removed! as i put it back together i was silently praying that i had put everything back right!
it worked fien though! i no 2 year ago when the original owner of that mac took it to be looked at they quoted her £ 150 ($230) to have it fixed so its good to see the price has come down for you!

  • G61 backlight inverter issues

I have a g61-320ca which I had hooked to my tv via HDMI cable. When I unplugged it from the tv the backlight on the laptop would not come on. The desktop is there but you can only see it with a flashlight. I ordred a new inverter for it and replaced it but still no light however I noticed that when I disconnect and reconnect the motherboard side cable on the inverter it comes on and works fine until the screen is turned off again then same thing I have unplug the inverter and plug it back in and it will light up and stay on.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks

The posts looking for help have been there (a few), but the resources, within the reach of Google, aren't. The failures are few in number (relatively) so, until the numbers reach a point of economic viability, we're out of the DIY with these panels.....
Also, most any repair manual is hard to find, and when the occasional manual surfaces, parts follow.
With the Aluminum enclosure of the ACD, the big question is opening and closing the case, without destroying it.
I'm not brave enough to figure that out on my display (as most others, as well).

  • Titanium Powerbook Backlight..

A friend of mine has a powerbook G4 titanium and tells me the backlight is OFF. I am wondering if there is a command to turn it back on or if there might be a problem with the backlight. If anyone can help, I would appreciate it.
    -- Dave

Dave, if the Backlight is off/defective you should be able to see the display if you look closely, or if you connect the machine up to a TV using S-Video. Once you've confirmed that the video board is correct - i.e. you have a picture on the S-Video/DVI output you can progress.I believe the backlight is totally off in the lowest Brightness setting (so that's your first port of call - System Preferences - check it turned up).
If that doesn't work try the following:
    Reset the PRAM.
Trash the com.apple.systempreferences.plist (sorry I'm not at a mac right now so the file name may be slightly off) you should also trash any other files that look like they are display related. (They are located in Macintosh HD > Libary > Preferences > ).
    Reset the Power Management Unit.
If you don't have any luck with that lot I would suspect the display/backlight/invertor board is defective. Those issues are going to cost between $100 and about $5-600 to solve.
Let us know how you get on.
    regards

  • Broken backlight - any repair guides out there?

Hi. Backlight is broken on my 12" G4 Powerbook. I can barely make out what's on the screen, but it appears fully functional.
What to do? I found that it can be the display inverter, and found a such on pbfixit.com. Can it be anything else?
I'll try and repair it myself, so if anyone have experience in doing so, I'd like to hear about it. I guess that I'll have to remove the LCD from the powerbook, and then open the LCD and replace the display inverter - but I'm just guessing and would like confirmation.
Getting it repaired at an Apple shop is not an option, too pricy and I expect new Intel Pb's to be around the corner.
    Any tips greatly appreciated.
    Morten

I think this is what you need: http://www.pbparts.com/shop/a123i.html
It bothers me, that I have not been able to find confirmation that the above part is different from the one used in my (1GHz) 12" Powerbook - http://www.pbparts.com/shop/a12di.html
If they're the same for the 1GHz, 1.33GHz and 1.5GHz models, you don't risk anything buy buying one off of ebay for $50 less. For example: http://cgi.ebay.com/LCD-Backlight-Inverter-for-Aluminum-12-Powerbook_W0QQitemZ58 64981242QQcategoryZ14909QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
I've tried getting in contact with the seller on what model the inverter is for, but reply. I'll buy one from pbparts.com.
    Best of luck.

  • Power trouble/backlight/invertor/water damage (MacBook Black late 2006)

So tucking my girlfriend into bed I spilled water onto her closed (black) macbook late model 2006. Unfortunately it was turned on without drying (it initially seemed that the water didn't really get anywhere other than the top case. First and it initially worked. Then the battery displayed an (X) as opposed to a 0 percent charge which i believe indicates replacement. Then the computer would only turn on for a moment before going quickly to sleep. I dissembled the computer and air cleaned it and let it dry for a few weeks. Hard drive was not damaged, all data was recovered.
Reassembled the computer, did not notice any water damage. Computer itinitally powers up and then sleeps after 20seconds. Magsafe adapter radomly shows green, or orange, or nothing at all. Replaced Dc/in board with no change. Tried running without battery, no change. Used alternate magsafe adapter, no change. Tried reset SMC with no change. Also tried running without optical drive as this had been having issues, nothing.
As a side note, the screen is dark as if the backlight inverter is out. Could the water have shorted the inverter and cause this problem? Would a faulty heatsink cause any of these issues? Do I even need to try replacing the battery, shouldn't it be able to run without?
Thanks so much for any guidance.

My advice is to take it into an Apple Store and have a genius check it out. There is always a chance that water got into it; it could also just be a need of a new battery.

  • 46L5200U picture has no backlight but sound is present

Hello I have a 46L5200U whose picture stoped working, the problem started with a once and a while picture would vanish (volume is functional) but come back at some point; finially the picture stoped returning.
if i get close to the tv (almost nose to screen) and get to the right angle or shine light at the right spot i can FAINTLY see the menu and scroll through its options.
I read on one forum that it was the backlight inverter board so quickly rushed one to fix the problem, unfortionaly replacment of the backlight inverter board did not fix the problem.
is there anyway to diagnose the problem the television is not even 2 years old yet; should i take it to a tv repair shop? please help.
    -JRW

About two weeks ago, mine started to do the same!  I purchased at TigerDirect in May 2012 so it's only a year and a half old.  At first, while watching TV, the screen would rapidly flash a few times and then it would go black. After turning the TV set off for a few seconds and then back on, the picture would be fine and stay on, sometimes for 15 minutes, sometimes for 2 hours or so, until it would flash again and then a black screen.  Now the picture is not coming back at all.  When I turn the TV on, the Toshiba logo comes on for a second and then the screen turns black.  Using a flashlight on the screen, I can see a dim picture. Please help!

  • Flashing monitor light.....back light inverter?

The Apple 20 inch monitor connected to my recently acquired Power PC G4 has recently started to do a series of two short and one long blinks. From researching, it would seem to be the beginnings of the backlight inverter going....but the light in the monitor is even and adjustable and doesn't seem diminished...Any other reason for the light to be flashing?
    Thanks for any help.
    Mike

Does the monitor have a USB pass-through? If so, try disconnecting the monitor from all the USB stuff and see if things get better.
If that doesn't help, you may wish to repost your question in the Apple Display forum here:
    http://discussions.apple.com/category.jspa?categoryID=111
Note the sub-categories by display type and see which one best describes your monitor. Look on the back for a model number. It will probably start with the letter "M." Because there are several 20" Apple displays with different ports and configs, having the model number in your post should get you an answer faster.

  • Backlight problem on MacBook

    Hi,
I have a 2008 MacBook (A1181) and am having one issue that I can't seem to figure out. A few weeks ago, the backlight started giving me problems. Specifically, it would shut off. Apple wanted $300 to fix it and I'd rather just get a new computer at that point, so I thought I'd try and fix it myself. If I break it, oh well.
Anyway, I ordered a new backlight inverter board and an inverter cable, but the problem persists. If I leave the computer alone completely, the backlight turns on after about a minute of sitting at the login screen. However, as soon as I touch a key/move the mouse, it shuts off. If I wait again, it comes back on a minute or two later, but then the same thing happens.
I've tried an external keyboard and have gotten the same results.
Any ideas at all what could be causing this? Or is the hardware just messed up?

Go to Apple Menu / About This Mac. Click on More Info ... next on System Report. In the left hand column, under Hardware, select USB. The right side will show the USB Device Tree. Look through that and check for "Built-in iSight". That is your camera. If it is not listed the camera is not working.
For backlighting, try this: go to System Preferences / Keyboard. Uncheck "Adjust keyboard lighting in low light".

  • Where can I find guides to replace backlight for Equium A210-1C4?

My Display Screen will not light up. I need to check a number of things, including the backlight, inverter and door switch. May need to replace the entire LED display.
Does anyone know of instructions to do these things with this particular model: Toshiba Equium A-210/1C4

Notebook disassembling is for authorized personal only so Maintenance manuals document is not available for download. It is not a public document.
If you want to do this alone use Google and check if you can find some instructions written by people who have such experiences or check if you can find some short movie on YouTube.
