Powerbook cut out completely tonight-Why?

My high res G4 15" 1.67GHz powerbook , bought Dec 05, has been playing up recently. Today I have had 2 kernel panics (possibly associated with the use of my vodafone 3G card and new software to allow it to work as the old software ceased to work with Mac Os X.4.5).
This afternoon the powerbook just cut out and stopped working when on battery. The screen went blank and the computer working noise ceased. When I rebooted the powerbook the time and date was set to 1970 indicating there had been a failure of power.
The battery charges full and shows a battery life of nearly 4 hours. I have had no problems previously with the powerbook.
I updated the software to Mac Os X.4.7 two days ago.
I am worried this is a sign of complete failure of my powerbook and wonder whether I should send it off to Apple (my nearest Apple Store is 3 hrs drive).
Should I be worried? What should I do ? I have had macs for 13 years but this is the first time one completely cut out on me!
G4 powerbook 1.67GHz, G4 powerbook 12 1.5GHz, Macbook pro 17" 2.16GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

Since you just updated to 10.4.7, and it sounds like the issues 'may' be related (ignoring for a moment the 3G card).....did you do the update through the software update function? Sometimes the software update function doesn't complete the upgrade, and odd things can happen. If you haven't already, you may want to download the combo update from http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macosxupdate1047comboppc.html . Repair permissions before and after the upgrade. If you use OnyX, you might clear the kernal and system caches before applying the combo upgrade.

  • IPad 3 speakers crackling and then cuts out completely

Please can you help? My ipad 3 loud speaker has started crackling and then completely cutting out. I have tried rebooting, installing updates and cleaning the connector/ docking point but none of these have worked.
    Can you help?
    Thanks.

I had the same issue when using the M-Audio unit.
My solution was to set "Sound Scheme" to "none"
For some reason when recording, when there is a system
generated sound (like a click from a web page being loaded) it
    messes up the audio.
It worked for me, I hope it works for you.

  • IPod cutting out...why?

This has happened twice. I go on the Internet on my iPod , and after a few minutes everything completely freezes. I press the home button and power button but they don't work. The screen goes black and has lots of flashing zig zags. This lasts for a few minutes and none on my buttons work. Then after that, the screen goes completely white for a few minutes, then the whole thing shuts down and powers up. It then takes me back to my lock screen and everything seems normal. But why does this keep happening, because it only seems to be happening on the Internet, and the sites are reliable and don't carry viruses. It doesn't happen on the same website each time, but it can happen anytime I am on the Internet. I would appreciate some helpful suggestions on how to avoid this and why it keeps happening. Has anyon else experienced this problem?

    Try the standard fixes:
    - Reset. Nothing will be lost.
Reset iPod touch:  Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears
    - Restore from backup
    - Restore to factory defaults/new iPod
If you still have the problem it is likely due to a hardware problem an an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

  • Audio chipmunks - then cuts out completely

I switched to an M-Audio MobilePre USB unit for good sound

  • PC keeps cutting out completely

I get a black screen and then nothing at all, the monitor says it's not even receiving a signal. It's happening all the time now, I probably don't even have time to write this.
My card didn't fit all the way into the slot and sticks out about a mm on one side, I thought maybe it could be this?

What slots are your memory in?
are your drive SATA? if they are which SATA ports are you using?
are you using PS2 or USB keyboard and mouse?
do you have any level of overclock?
which card doesnt fit in all the way? (you mean vid card?)
    What bios are you using?
did you install the mobo with the recesses properly - therefore not shorting out on your case?
People here will tell you your 20A on the 12V is marginal, I dont agree with that.
Try booting without a keyboard and mouse (or a USB keyboard and mouse) and report back how long it takes before things shutdown (if they shutdown).

  • Internet dropping. Works for a few minutes, sometimes seconds. Then cuts out completely and hangs.

Since doing a clean install of Mountain Lion on my 2011 iMac. The internet connects on startup, works for a few minutes, then hangs as if it's getting stuck.
Everything is up to date and I've tried numberous ideas to fix it (Renewing the DHCP, editing the MTU). Nothing works.
It's still fully connected to the wifi and says there's an internet connection but nothing will load, not just the browsers but also anything else to do with the internet also doesn't work.
I've seen others with the same issue also.
Any assistance would be highly appreciated as my iMac is pretty much rendered useless currently.

Thanks for the instructions Mort and clong but before I update my firmware, I was able to connect to the internet on my computer with the router at last! But there is still a problem. Whenever I try to connect my PS3 to it, it would stop working for both my PC and the PS3.

  • Audio sputters and then completely cuts out during playback

Hello, everyone.  I've been editing in iMovie for years, and have never come across this problem until today.
When playing back a clip that I've inserted into my project, the audio sputters on and off for about 10 seconds, and then cuts out completely.  If I stop playing, and then start again, the audio comes back, but in about 10 seconds, sputters and cuts out once again.  When I play back the original clip that I imported, this does not happen.  It is only when it is actually in my project.  The audio waves shown below the video are all intact as well.
I've already tried restarting the computer and deleting the iMovie preference file to see if that would make a difference, but it has not.  Any ideas as to what this could be, or even better yet, how to fix it?
    Thanks for your time.

Update: When detaching the audio, this problem goes away.  However, the audio fade-ins from transitions, etc. go away.  Is there any way to solve this problem without detaching?

  • Sound cutting out on Mac Pro (late 2013)

Bit of a long one and I'm not sure if this is the right place so sorry in advance.
For the past 2/3 weeks the sound on my new Mac Pro has been cutting out completely. It doesn't matter if headphones, external speakers or nothing is plugged into the back the sound just cuts out. It only comes back if I reboot the mac or kill 'audiocored' (as suggested by some people over on the Apple Support Forums.
The sound would cut out when I'm using CC products and when I'm not. It would range from 3 hours of not cutting out to every 15 seconds. If it occurred when I watching a sequence or clip in Premiere it would make the playback slow to a crawl and if I was watching a video on YouTube and it would occur the video would then stop and no longer load. The cut outs are to my knowledge completely random and I'm not doing anything that I haven't done a million times before when it occurs.
I've been contacting Apple for a while now and gone through a number of different troubleshoots (booting in safe mode, resetting the PRAM, logging in as another user) and the issue occurs on everything. The only fix I did find was if I created a new partition on the hard drive and boot into that then the sound issues don't occur.
Which leads me to why I'm posting this... That partition didn't have any Adobe software. I then uninstalled all Adobe CC programs on the main partition and the sound issues then stopped completely. Only when it's all installed (even when they're not even open) do the sound problems occur, which leads me to believe the sound cuts are due to Adobe CC software.
All Adobe and Apple software is up to date. I've trashed the preferences on all my Adobe software as well as clearing the cache.
I realise this is a bit of a weird one and maybe in the wrong support forum but I'm getting to my wits end. I've got huge projects dropping very soon (with tight deadlines) that I need to work on and can't be rebooting the mac every 5 mins.
If anyone has any suggestions on how to fix this I would be greatly appreciated.
I'm currently toying with the idea of doing a factory reset of the computer but I worry as I know that will take some time re-downloading / installing all my software and documents.

I have had a bit more luck it would seem.
Turns out it wasn't and Adobe software that was causing the problem rather some faulty RAM. I took all the RAM out and then put it back in again a few seconds later (doing exactly what Apple support told me to do) and voila the sound issues were gone. Although one of the cards decided not to work any more and I was left with 12gb rather than 16gb. Have since replaced all the default RAM with a more powerful third set from a party provider and haven't had any trouble since.
It's very strange that this problem is persisting for you even after the RAM being replaced. All I can suggest is that you keep calling Apple as their support services seem to be pretty good (for me at least).
Sorry if this is no help at all.

  • Audio cuts out most of the way through an iDVD image

We created a Quicktime file using Final Cut Express HD 3.5, and imported the Quicktime fill into iDVD 6 (all patches have been applied to iDVD and to Quicktime, and Quicktime has been upgraded to Pro version). The iDVD preview shows that all audio is present all the way through the end of the video(about 1 hour and 5 minutes), which means that the Quicktime file has all the audio present.
However, after creating a DVD disk image with iDVD 6, the audio cuts out completely about 55 minutes into the video. The spot where the audio cuts out is not near any chapter marker nor near any transition of any kind in the Final Cut editor session.
By the way, I am creating the image on an external Firewire drive with 112 Gbyte free, although we also tried the internal hard drive which has about 20Gbyte free.
How can I figure out how to get all the audio onto the image created by iDVD?

I believe I've found the cause of the problem! Within Final Cut Express, I found a system setting for output buffer size, set by default to 2Gbyte. I also found that the default 'Convert to Quicktime' setting is for Internet Fast Start. I increased the buffer size from 2Gbyte to 3Gbyte and unchecked Internet Fast Start, and I have no more audio drop out!
I think that iDVD has a bug when multiple file segments are linked together in the Quicktime file (because of the smaller FCE output buffer size). Note that the iDVD preview did not experience the problem, so that part of the iDVD app seems to handle multiple file segments correctly, whereas the part that processes the file segments while creating the DVD image seems to have the bug. Increasing the buffer size masked the iDVD bug.
So if anybody from Apple is listening, please fix your iDVD bug please!
Concerning the ZR85, I do re-use tapes quite a lot and have never experienced problems. I do clean the ZR85 heads periodically. However, I shall consider using new tapes more often.

  • Sound cutting out/crackling/pops in Windows 7 XFi XtremeGamer

    System specs:
    Windows 7 Ultimate fully updated
    Q6600 @ 3.0ghz
Asus P5N32-E Sli Motherboard (680i Chipset) 80 bios revision w/ nVidia 5.5 nforce drivers
    2x2 Gigs Corsair ?DDR2 800 @
    In dual channel mode
    BFG 285-GTX w/ 96.2 drivers
    X-Fi XtremeGamer w/ PCDRV_LB2_8_003 drivers
With this setup I am unable to use CMSS 3D without the audio cutting out completely. Before it does so it's usually followed with numerous cracks and po
    ps.
Disabling CMSS 3D alleviates this problem, however I occasionally get a slight pops and crackles when playing games or listening to music.
While playing Mass Effect 2 the sound will completely cut out in the same manner it does when I have CMSS 3D enabled, despite the option being turned off in the console launcher.
At first I tried a clean install of the drivers, removing drivers, using driver cleaner pro, registry cleaner and then reinstalling them. Did not fix the issue. I then did the same for the chipset drivers and my video card drivers.
I thought it may have been a problem with OpenAL (for mass effect 2) so I reinstalled that. Same problem.
    I tried using PAX's driver's, same problem.
I've used DPC Latency Checker V.2.0 and according to it my machine should be able to handle real-time streaming audio with no dropouts.
I'm at a loss at what else to do and any further help would be appreciated.

Just an update on my problem.
I was able to resolve the sound cutting out issue and the cracks/pops issue within windows by disabling CMSS3D + setting my sample rate to 24 bit, 96k Hz.. Using 92k Hz results in the cracks and pops coming back, although they are few and far between.
Unfortunately this did not resolve my issue with the sound/audio cutting out in mass effect 2. I tried the onboard sound and that also cuts out, so I've determined it's not a hardware issue but rather a bug of some sort within the game. There are also other sparse reports of people having the same issue.
    Thanks

  • Background Audio Cutting Out

    Hey Folks,
Each time I preview the project, the background audio will
play during a few slides, then cut out completely. This is the
first time it's happened, however, I think there may be a causal
link to the insertion of swf files into a few of the slides.
Anyone know what the solution is? Thanks in advance.
    Christopher

Yes! I have the same issue too with me Motorokr s9 stereo BT headset and my Jawbone Icon -- This happens both when playing music via the iPod app OR when speaking on the phone. I can't put the phone in my pocket or else this happens!!! I also can't put it on the desk then walk around my 12x12 office without the dropouts. Having to hold the phone close to the headset kinda defeats the purpose. BTW, my 3GS worked almost flawlessly with these devices. I know, early-adopter syndrome but REALLY! I really rely on the BT headsets
Just got off the phone with Apple Support -- they were ver nice and helpful. They've scheduled me a Genius appt for tomorrow morning so they can run diags on the iPhone. They've also asked me to bring the headsets.

  • ITunes movies--video stutters, then sound cuts out

When I play a video file in iTunes, it starts out just fine, but within a few minutes, the video stutters and the audio cuts out completely.  The video will continue playing (although it will continue to stutter a bit) but the audio never comes back.  Also, oddly, the search box has a white rectangle in it that covers the blue border of the box.  It's a little hard to describe.  I've tried a ton of things to try to fix the problem, and nothing's worked yet.  It happens unfailingly, and I've tried updating drivers, re-installing Quicktime, re-installing iTunes (incidentally, the problem has persisted throughout several iTunes and Windows updates), and a lot more that I can't even remember.  I'm on a PC running Windows 8.  Does anyone have any suggestions?

This solution was posted by tmeader on iLounge forums:
    You need QT Pro:
    1) Open up the Video file in Quicktime Pro
    2) Select File->Export
    3) Select "Movie to MPEG-4" beside "Export:", then click the OPtions button
    4) Select "Video" and make sure that the "Video Format" is set to "Pass through"
    5) Do the same for "Audio", then hit OK
    6) Save the file
Or you can downgrade the firmware from 1.1 to 1.0:
    http://forums.ilounge.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=143118&highlight=downgrade+ firmware
Yu can get the previous updater at Apple support.

  • Audio cuts out in the final minutes of a 1.5 hour movie

My burned DVD has great sound, EXCEPT that the audio cuts out completely for the last 5 minutes or so of the last chapter. My project is about 90 minutes long and contains camcorder footage, pictures and added background music (not protected). I've checked the movie file - it's fine, and everything previews fine in iDVD. The DVD was encoded with "Professional" quality.
Perhaps it's too long? but no errors were reported. Advice?

Possible Explanation and Solution: I had assembled my movie from two m4v files, the "large" exports produced by iMovie when you share projects to the media browser. I used QT Pro to simply copy and paste one onto the end of the other, and saved as a .mov. I thought this was a clever solution to the lack of a "Play All" problem in iDVD. All my chapters and everything worked beautifully in iDVD preview. But then the audio dropped out on the final output. Oh Well, it almost worked!
With no other solution in sight, I recreated my DVD project this time with the two separate .m4v movies from the Media Browser and everything works on the finished disk. I have the annoying return to the menus, but at least I finally have a complete disk.
Take home lesson: Bite the bullet and assemble your complete DVD movie in one iMovie '09 project. The convenience of dividing it into smaller projects is a trap - there's no good way to put them back together for the final DVD. What a pain.

  • AUDIO CUTTING OUT on IMAC

    Hi,
The sound on my iMac keeps cutting out. My Mac is running on MAC OS X V.10.6.8.
When the sound cuts out I'm generally watching something VLC player and have Chrome open.
Normally it just cuts out completely (including using the audio buttons on the keyboard) but when I restart the computer it works again for maybe another 10 or so minutes before cutting out again. But then sometimes (when using the exact same programs) it doesn't cut out at all.
I don't have any speakers or anything plugged in. I've checked the updates on both the mac and VLC player, but they are all up-to-date, so not really sure what it could be!
I did try and find some similar threads and answers but no luck so if anyone has any ideas, it would be greatly appreciated

MOTU support suggested the following steps to do as well as the steps to reset the MOTU from Pancenter. This will reset the circuit board (motherboard) inside the MOTU interface:
    1) Unplug ALL cables from the MOTU interface.
    2) Double check that the power cord is really unplugged.
    3. Switch the voltage switch on the side of the MOTU interface from your setting (110 in the US) to the other setting and back a few times.
    4) Make sure you've set the voltage switch back to the right setting for your country.
    5) Plug everything back in.
...maybe this works for other MOTU interfaces too? I have had issues for a long time with my MOTU 828 mkII and these additional steps have fixed the problems I've had that would keep recurring before when I only kept resetting my MOTU the way Pancenter explained.

  • How do I keep sound from cutting out on FaceTime?

I am a brand new Mac mini owner (2.5Ghz i5, 4GB RAM, 500GB HD, ATI graphics).  I am also a brand new Mac person.  Today is day 3 w/ my new mini and OSX Lion.
I have a Microsoft LifeCam Cinema HD 720p webcam (model H5D-00001) that I bought about a year ago for a PC, and the box states it is compatible w/ OSX. I have connected the camera and it works fine with PhotoBooth and Skype for video and audio with no hiccups.  I started FaceTime to talk to my brother in another county in Pennsylvania (both on Comcast internet connections, mine wired via Ethernet to a Netgear WNR2000 router and his iPad 2 wirelessly connected to another Netgear WNR2000 router via Comcast).
The conversation starts fine.  But after about 2 minutes, I start to lose my brother's audio on my end of the connection.  The audio starts to get garbled, then it cuts out completely.  We close and re-open the FaceTime session to fix it, but it keeps happening after the 2 minute mark.
I have closed all other connections other than FaceTime.  It is also a BRAND NEW 4GB Core i5 Mac and his is a brand new iPad 2.
Any suggestions on how to troubleshoot or resolve this problem?  Thanks.

    Dear Apple,
I have been a loyal customer since 1991. I have enjoyed nearly every product. I love - LOVE Facetime.
But the audio dropout problem *****. PLEASE FIX IT.
Seriously, there should be an easy software fix to prevent the auto-volume control from dropping one party's sound so low that it is inaudible. You can do SIRI for crying out loud, surely you can FIX THIS.
    Thank you!
