POWERBOOK DIED WHILE OUT FOR A SMOKE!! HELP

Yes I know, smoking is a bad habit but when I went out my MacBook was up and running fine. I had various windows opened through the spaces features. This MacBook is the 2Ghz Core Duo with 100G HD & 1G Ram. When I came back in the MacBook was dead. Despite it being fully charged and plugged into a working surge protector. There is no lite on the magnetic power cord to the MacBook., I can't wake it up nor can I do a force restart , ctrl, apple key & power button at the same time. Screen deep black, no grayish or any other color/icons etc., Just completely dead. I've replugged it into other outlets with no luck. Took the battery out and put it back in again. nothing works. any ideas as to what may have happened? or a particular set of keys to press to turn it back on? thanks,

If you press the button on the battery, do the lights glow?
If the MagSafe adapter won't even light up, you may be looking at some kind of hardware failure inside the computer. Your best bet is to bring it to an Apple store and have the folks there take a look.

  • Reaching out for Enterprise Security Help

My current environment is a medium size hospital with mulitple campuses. We have a number of different types of devices; Laptops, CoW's (Computer on Wheels) 7921's, BlackBerry's. Currently the majority of my clients are running WPA/WPA2-PSK. Personally, I'm sick to death of PSK. It's an easy and samll footprint, but managing keys is a major pain in the butt. At any one time I have an average of 500 clients connected to my WLC's (4.2.205). I've been trying to run a project on moving the devices to an EAP scenerio. Laptops work fine in EAP-TLS as do BlackBerry's but as everyone knows, EAP-TLS has some authentication overhead. Here's my problem, the CoW's. The CoW is simply a mini-pc put into a specialized cart that the nurses pull from room to room for BedSide Meds and such. With EAP-TLS testing I'm having a lot of issues with the authentication taking to long and the user getting kicked out of their app, Meditech. Our version of Meditech is basically a crap telnet application and if it doesn't get a response quickly it'll throw you to the desktop. Also, although I know EAP-TLS had some overhead, I'm dissapointed in it's roaming ability and how slow it is. As I see it, the users I have testing EAP-TLS on laptops and Blackberry's are not truely mobile. They typically don't attempt to use their device while on the move versus's the CoW. Here are a few things I've ran into in trying to figure out a security solution and hopefully you guys can help me out and suggest somethings I haven't thought of:
EAP-TLS - Obvious overhead issues as stated above. Is anyone running this in a similiar environment, how do you deal with it?
PEAP - Rely's on a strong user/pass which does not work in our world. The nurses log into the CoW witha generic username/password that pretty much everyone is aware of. Although Windows it's self is locked WAY down, your still on the network if you have access to this user/pass.
EAP-FAST - As I understand it, with EAP-FAST and MSCHAPv2, there's a PAC for each user. If the user logs in more then once from different locations, I suspect this would be a problem. Not to mention I'm not sure how the manageability on usernames would work. I looked at using the Certificate on the machine to do the authentication and setting EAP-FAST to require this for autehntication and it works fine for my laptop and the IntelPro/Set Wireless utility but on the CoW's, not so.. The Cow's have an Atheros AR5006x chip and with the Atheros Client Utility, the utility will only allow you to select a personal cert, not a machine certificate for anything. Does anyone know of an Client Utility that will allow me to do this with out spending $$$$ or of Atheros Client that will allow me to do this?
How is everyone else providing an enterprise solution with manageabillity and stability?

Extensible Authentication Protocol (EAP) is an IETF RFC that stipulates that an authentication protocol must be decoupled from the transport protocol used to carry it. This allows the EAP protocol to be carried by transport protocols such as 802.1X, UDP, or RADIUS without having to make changes to the authentication protocol itself.
•PEAP MSCHAPv2-Protected EAP MSCHAPv2. Uses a Transport Layer Security (TLS) tunnel, (the IETF standard of an SSL) to protect an encapsulated MSCHAPv2 exchange between the WLAN client and the authentication server.
•PEAP GTC-Protected EAP Generic Token Card (GTC). Uses a TLS tunnel to protect a generic token card exchange; for example, a one-time password or LDAP authentication.
•EAP-FAST-EAP-Flexible Authentication via Secured Tunnel. Uses a tunnel similar to that used in PEAP, but does not require the use of Public Key Infrastructure (PKI).
•EAP-TLS-EAP Transport Layer Security uses PKI to authenticate both the WLAN network and the WLAN client, requiring both a client certificate and an authentication server certificate.

  • Upgrade this 2005 PowerBook or fork out for MacBook?

This is a refinement of an earlier Q.
    My problems/desires are:
    1. I'm fed up with being unable to avail myself of stuff that needs Tiger/Leopard.
    2. My 80GB internal HD is constantly filling up.
    3. I have no webcam and need (a good) one for work.
    4. My G4 gets taxed by certain things, e.g. trimming clips in QuickTime.
    5. My 160GB Freecom external drive for file backup isn't adequately powered by the G4 and needs an inconvenient mains powered hub.
All the above (not sure about 5.) would be fixed by getting a new/refurb MacBook (Pro), but cash is tight. So I'm considering this:
    1. Buy Leopard.
    2. Buy & install 2GB of RAM.
    3. Buy & install 250GB internal drive.
    4. Buy an iSight or something cheaper that's as good.
    5. (recommended by an expert here) Buy another, bootable external drive to do a total system backup while I install Leopard (and for common sense protection thereafter).
All of that costs a fair chunk of the price of say a refurbished MB Pro, and is more trouble. Any comments? Specific Qs:
    1. Macupgrades.co.uk advises against installing an internal HD, but could I do it? (I put one into a titanium G4 a while back.)
    2. Any recommendations for a 250GB HD?
    3. Any recommendations for good webcams cheaper than iSight?
    4. Any recommendations for external drives that will be adequately powered by my PowerBook?
    5. Would I regret doing all of this in a year's time because of my G4's ageing? E.g. the screen is still fine, but is it likely to deteriorate?
Many thanks for reading and replying.

    1. Macupgrades.co.uk advises against installing an internal HD, but could I do it? (I put one into a titanium G4 a while back.)
    Yes.
    2. Any recommendations for a 250GB HD?
There's only one on the market that you can use:
    https://eshop.macsales.com/item/Western%20Digital/WD2500BEVE/
It may be available elsewhere for up to $10 less.
    3. Any recommendations for good webcams cheaper than iSight?
Nope — I don't know the first thing about 'em.
    4. Any recommendations for external drives that will be adequately powered by my PowerBook?
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Other%20World%20Computing/MS4U7250GB16/
Connect it via FireWire, not USB.
    5. Would I regret doing all of this in a year's time because of my G4's ageing? E.g. the screen is still fine, but is it likely to deteriorate?
It has already deteriorated, as you'd see if you could compare it side-by-side with the way it used to look. That deterioration will continue. How long you'll continue to be happy with it, I can't guess.
To $230 for the two drives, add $100 for 2GB RAM, $130 for Leopard, and something more for a webcam. That's probably at least $500 invested in a 3-year-old Powerbook. It may keep you happy for another couple of years, or it may not. You'll have to decide whether that's preferable to spending 2x-3.5X as much for a refurbed MacBook or MacBook Pro, with a year's warranty and the assurance that it will run the next version of OSX.

  • NVidia GeForce 6800 Ultra just died - need equivalent for my G5 - HELP

    Hi,
I reviewed the posts but didn't find a simple answer to my mundane (if critical to me!) question:
I have a G5 as outlined below. I upgraded it the very day the 30"monitors were announced and received the:
nVidia GeForce 6800 Ultra DDL Card kit
My card died this morning and I need to replace it with a functional equivalent, I know the 6800 is rare which is fine- I just need whatever is available today to get fixed up.
Does anyone know what card I can easily get to do the job?
    Thanks so much.
    My G5
    Model Name: Power Mac G5
    Model Identifier: PowerMac7,3
    Processor Name: PowerPC G5 (3.0)
    Processor Speed: 2.5 GHz
    Number Of CPUs: 2
L2 Cache (per CPU): 512 KB

Alot depends on whether you ever have a second monitor hooked up.
There is a better, faster card than a 6800 for G5s called a 7800GS, but it only has 1 @ DVI port, and one VGA port. The DVI port can run a 30" just fine however. (Means it supports "Dual Link") These are all flashed PC cards....but the ROM is quite stable and they are GREAT cards.
If you need to run 2 @ 30" DVI monitors than you will need to find a Mac 6800 on EBay. It HAS to be an original Mac one, the "flashed" PC ones NEVER have Dual Link capability.
Another option would be a Max X800 XT...it has a DVI port good for a 30" and an ADC port which is only useful for an older Mac ADC monitor...but it can be converted to DVI with a relatively cheap adapter. These cards are super rare but occasionaly show up on Ebay. There are flashed X800s but most are VGA only...the DUal Link DVI ones are ULTRA rare.
No Radeon 9800 ever had Dual Link, so don't waste any time looking at those.
There is a retail option though I am not certain they are available anymore...the Radeon 9600 Mac and PC edition....has to be that one as most Mac 9600s didn't run Dual Link. These cards worked in Mac or PC and had 256 Megs of RAM. Sadly, they are MUCH slower than a 6800.
I can't stress enough that you need to find a card with Dual Link capability to run a 30". Otherwise you will end up looking at your 30" at 1280x800 instead of 2560x1600.
Try BruinMacs on Ebay, college kid who helped write the 7800GS ROM, now selling them for less than everyone else. He sometimes even has the X800 with Dual Link too, ask him.
Sadly, you will find that the official Mac 6800 and X800 cards still fetch $400 or so...the old "Supply & Demand" rule being hard to avoid. If you can find one on a local Craigslist ad, grab it up !!! (after testing)

  • "Copy Selected Albums" Option Grayed Out for Synchronizing Photos--Help!!

I purchased a 60GB Video iPod a week ago. I cannot get it to sync my photos. When I select "Synchronize photos from iPhoto," the option to "Copy all photos and albums" is selected and the option to "Copy Selected Albums" is grayed out. If I try to sync all the albums, I get an Error -50. I can, however, copy & sync photos by selecting my Pictures folder (either all folders or selected folders). But, that won't give me my photos organized by album in iPhoto.
I rebuilt the iPhoto database and deleted/trashed preferences. No help. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Apple has been no help and I have searched and searched these forums over many days, with no success.

I had this problem after I imported a bunch of photos. I narrowed it down and found that two of my pictures had the word "photo" in the filename, example(photo003.jpg and photo004.jpg). I deleted these files and the "copy selected ablums" was available again.
    Hope this helps!!

  • Ipad frozen in voiceover mode. will not accept my passcode and has locked me out for one hour. help?

while watching movie, it failed to download remainder. I had turned  it off to try to reset and then ended up freezing in Voiceover mode. It's  not acceping my passcode either and I'm wondering if it reset to factory passcode. Have it hooked to my laptop and it doesn't seem to want to open there either (though maybe because it's locked). I am backed up to iCloud but how do I get it to unlock???

I am a hold out to an I Pad.  Help change my mind!  I travel and while gone, for several months at a time, have always managed my photos on my laptop on a daily basis.  This means deletions, naming, filing in folders.  Is this possible on an I Pad?  I have just returned from a 2 month trip with several thousand photos.  If I had waited to name and file these until I got home, it would be misery.

The iPad is a great device but it can't do all things. To accomplish all the tasks you mention I feel a laptop is the best tool.

  • Time out occurred while waiting for memory resources

    Team,
I am have Microsoft SQL Server 2008 SP1( 10.0.2734.0) 64bit with application being SCCM 2007
I am getting below error in SQL error log ::
    Error 8645: Severity 17, state 1
A time out occurred while waiting for memory resources to execute the query in resource pool ‘internal’. Re-run the query.
At first glance, i thought that it is issue of query not getting enough memory.
Searched on google but could not get way to resolve it or issue creating factor.
    Chetan

    Well,
Upgrade is what client is not willing to go for as of now.
They have rebooted the server and as of now, their SCCM application is working fine ( Not sure how reboot has solve the issue). We are not getting the above mentioned error also in SQL Log.
Looks like, rebooting server has cleared the memory jam.
    Chetan
Restarting sql server service cleared buffer cache and any such query holding or requesting more memory so issue disappeared.  You just delayed the issue not solved it. Next time dont reboot find out the cause . If you want to check whether your SQL
Server requires more memory have a look at below counters in link
    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/22316.sql-server-memory-and-troubleshooting.aspx#How_to_test_that_your_SQL_server_is_facing_memory_crunch
If your say to business about what are drawbacks on running unsupported version I am sure they will apply SP3. There are loads of fixes and its quite possible your error may be related to any such fixed issue.
Please mark this reply as answer if it solved your issue or vote as helpful if it helped so that other forum members can benefit from it.

  • MAX timed out while waiting for a driver

I am getting an error when starting MAX. the error is that MAX timed out while waiting for a driver (nidaqe plug-in). I have a PCI-GPIB card and an PCI-MXI-2 card in the PC. The operating system is Windows XP.
I am able to see both these cards under the Windows Device Manager>Hardware.
    MAX version is 4.6.1f0
I have also installed NI-488.2 and NIVXI331 driver installed on the computer.
    Any help will be appreciated.
    Thank you.
    vxiguy

    Hi vxi_guy,
What you're seeing could be the result of a few different things.  First, I would check to see if the NI Configuration Manger and NI Device Loader are running, as per this KB.  Then, if that doesn't work, I would explore the solutions described in this KB.  Please let me know if neither of those articles resolve the issue.  Have a good one!

Can't tell you what's wrong with just this much of information. Take a look at this log file (as reported in the error message):
    D:\product\10.1.3\OracleAS_1\opmn\logs\OC4J~home~default_group~1
    And also:
    D:\product\10.1.3\OracleAS_1\j2ee\home\log\home_default_group_1\server.log
These two log files will give you bit more information to help diagnose the issue.
    Thanks
