Powerbook display went out, Help!

I was just using Safari, and seemingly out of nowhere, I heard a loud whirring (I think from the optical drive) and then the display went black--mostly, I can still sort of make out the menu bar and dock. I've had this happen once before, but that time it was because the power cord came unplugged. That is not the case this time--the power cord is plugged in and the indicator is lit green, meaning it is fully powered. Hitting the power button brought the display back to life for fifteen or twenty seconds, but then it went out again. I tried restarting, no help. My external monitor is working fine however.
Powerbook G4, 1.5 ghz, 12". Any ideas? Thanks.

I don't know exactly what you've done so far, but I'll start from scratch.
1. First (and I suspect you've already done this), go  to System Preferences/Displays, and choose 1920 x 1200 resolution. You can pick another resolution later, but let's start at the max and move down later, if you choose.
2. If you cannot change your screen resoution, please enclose some more detailed info, i.e., what happened when you tried to go to different resolutions. Did it stay the same size? Get any error messages?
Oh, and leave your responses here, so others can give their input!

  • ZenV Plus display went out how to get new firmwa

OK my mp3 player is just a little over 3 months old and the display went out. It started getting lighter and lighter and now you can not see it at all. I tried resetting it to no avail so after reading the forum I thought I should try to reload the firmware. How? Remember I can not see anything on the display so that will make it a little more difficult I am sure. Thank you for any advice or help.

i dont know if the screen of your zen v+ still work.but sometimes it doesn't display anything when the unit crash.just reset it and it can work again.so u can try it like that if the screen can work.hold the play botton and boot?the unit at the same time.if the screen can work,it will display the interface ofrecovery model .if not, although your unit can work, you cant operate the unit without viewing interface.

  • My Mac's display went out and I'm using an external display,

Im having problems with the display size of GarageBand, is their any way to adjust the software?

What make/model of external hard drive. Some disks themselves have a default power save feature, which may kick in regardless of the enclosure or system power settings. I have a Hitachi deskstar drive in an ADS enclosure, and it behaves this way - the drive spools down and power saves entirely on it's own, independent of the system power save settings (since the ADS's chipset does not support that feature, the disks internal settings take over).
If I were to use that drive as a boot drive, and let it sit idle (no disk read or write access) for a few minutes, the drive would power save, and the system would, of course, become unresponsive. Perhaps your external drive is similar?

  • Screen display went crazy- help

I have been using this MacBook Pro for over a year. It has worked fine.
I printed a piece from an Adobe site.
I walked away from the computer while I was printing.
When I returned, the piece had printed, but the screen size had doubled.  It is difficult for me to read and to move
around the screen.  I tried to change the display size from 1280 X 800. This made little difference.
I am unable to get back to my original screen size.  I shut the computer off and re booted, but the large
    screen size remained.
I disconnected the power supply, and worked on battery.  the screen size remained.
What else can I do?  I want my computer back.
    Please assist.
I have a kitten. He may have walked on some key stroke. I don't think so, but it is possible.

usb to usb does not work nor does the tornado device - that is - so far - just pc to pc.

FireWire between the two (get appropriate 800-800 or 400-800), Target Disk Mode on the old one, appears as an external disk on the new one. Drag everything over, or use Setup Assistant if first start of new one, or plain old Migration Assistant. You really don't need a display to see a prancing FireWire icon, do you?

If you have iTunes 11 on your Mac then you can enable the left-hand sidebar via option-command-S, that might make it easier to navigate.
Connect the phone to your Mac and select it on that left-hand sidebar, and on the right-hand side of the screen there should be a series of tabs which you can use to select what to sync to the phone. If it's an audiobook then it should appear on the Books tab for selecting/syncing, and films will be on the Movies tab. When you've got the audiobook on your phone you should get an Audiobooks option in the Music app (you might need to tap the '...' tab at the bottom of the Music app to see it).

My friend wanted to get some music off my itunes
This is called "stealing". You do not have the legal right to give her the music you have in your iTunes library unless you are the copyright holder.
when syncing it it said she had to update her phone software first
That's not quite what it said.  Someone should have paid more attention to the great big warning about the possibility of losing data if the phone wasn't backed up.
We cannot find her new photos. Please help and there was 100 new pics. Is there any way we can get them back. I already have the program Asoftech - but it doesnt seem to register the iphone only C and D drive. Please help!
It restored the backup that was made on your computer 6 months ago, which did not contain those photos. You're wasting your time trying to find them on the phone. They don't exist.
Hopefully, your friend syncs her phone to her own computer on a regular basis. She needs to plug her phone into her computer and restore it from her last backup. That will restore it to the state it was in when the backup was made.
She also needs to get in the habit of extracting the photos on a regular basis, like she would from any other digital camera.

You can't use a $35 card on that type of phone.

    See Ogelthorpe's link:
Note: Portable computers that have a battery you should not remove on your own include MacBook Pro (Early 2009) and later, all models of MacBook Air, and MacBook (Late 2009).
    Shut down the computer.
Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if its not already connected.
On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time.
Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
Note: The LED on the MagSafe power adapter may change states or temporarily turn off when you reset the SMC.

  • Pavilion Dv9548 graphics card went out need help!

Was told by geek squid at best buy that it possibley comes with an extra slot for a new graphics card if the main went out was hoping someone can give me info about it and if so can post a link for which card ill need

Wrong answer Geek Squid. No, sorry. The video card is soldered to the motherboard and cannot be replaced. The motherboard can be replaced, or the video card can be repaired by a reflow. Geek Squid would have no idea what that is.
The dv9000 series with nVidia video has had massive failure rates. There is no good or reliable fix, just temporary patches. The best advice is to cut your losses and buy a new laptop. Again, sorry.

  • POWERBOOK DIED WHILE OUT FOR A SMOKE!! HELP

Yes I know, smoking is a bad habit but when I went out my MacBook was up and running fine. I had various windows opened through the spaces features. This MacBook is the 2Ghz Core Duo with 100G HD & 1G Ram. When I came back in the MacBook was dead. Despite it being fully charged and plugged into a working surge protector. There is no lite on the magnetic power cord to the MacBook., I can't wake it up nor can I do a force restart , ctrl, apple key & power button at the same time. Screen deep black, no grayish or any other color/icons etc., Just completely dead. I've replugged it into other outlets with no luck. Took the battery out and put it back in again. nothing works. any ideas as to what may have happened? or a particular set of keys to press to turn it back on? thanks,

If you press the button on the battery, do the lights glow?
If the MagSafe adapter won't even light up, you may be looking at some kind of hardware failure inside the computer. Your best bet is to bring it to an Apple store and have the folks there take a look.

  • MacBook display went blank...

The display on my month-old MacBook just went blank a few minutes ago. Closed screen, sleep light came on, opened, sleep light went off but still no display... I held down the power-key until the display went from grey to dead-black-off, waited a bit, then turned it back on and it seems to be okay now; what I want to know is, one, is this a known issue with the newest MacBooks, and two, is it something I should drag him down to the Apple Store ASAP to have looked at? (IE, is this common and going to happen again and again unless I see to it, or was it some transient blip?) It's been a desktop machine for its entire life thus far, so it's not as if it's getting physically banged around that connections could already be loose if they didn't pretty much start out that way...

Just had this happen too! Did the software update, rebooted and it's blank. I can boot into single user mode, that works, booting verbosely gets to a certain point then goes blank.
I've tried resetting pram. no help. i can't figure out how to boot this from an external drive either (no firewire port! how smart was that?)

  • My dv9700 LCD went out . What action can I take to insure that itis not the motherboard?

LCD went out, and I connected my laptop to an external monitor which works fine so I relaced the monitor, and whn I turn the laptop on, again, the lcd stayed on about 3 minutes, and then it turned off. I restarted the laptop, and again it started up and stayed on, onlythis time  just long enough to display the HP sign.  Then it went off and will not starat anymore.  "
lso, all the time it is on, I cwn hear taking and voices in the background but no picy=ture.
Could it be a capacitor leak? Or the graphic chip is bad?

Here is your notebook's Maintenance and Service Guide. This gives instructions on disassembling the notebook.
If reseating the cable does not resolve the issue you'll likely need to replace the screen. I don't want to lead you on however, it is one of the harder repairs to perform.
If you need to order the part you should be able to do so from this page.
I hope this information is helpful; have a great day!

The other day I was writing an essay while listening to my iTunes. Then all of a sudden, the power of my house went out. When we finally got power back, and I was able to open up itunes, over 700 songs of mine were deleted. When I looked in the trash, I saw two things labled "iTunes library extras", and "iTunes library genius". When I tried opening them, it said that I needed to open them with an application, and that I needed to chose one. I chose iTunes. When I tried double clicking on "iTunes library extras" after this, all it did was open up iTunes. Nothing else. Someone please help me because I had a lot of songs that I liked, and recently downloaded. And it will be a pain to get them all back if no one can help me.

Are the files still physically on your HD?
[User]/Music/iTunes/Media/Music is the default location. Unless you suddenly have a bunch of new "free space" on your hard drive, they're still where they were, you just need to create a new library file.
