Powerbook external battery pack?

I recently bought a powerbook(15" ) to use for graduate school. My classes are going to last anywhere from 2 hours to up to 4 and a half hours. Obviously battery life is important. I am hoping to be able to sit next to an outlet but in case I cannot I am looking into other battery solutions. So my question is, is there any kind of external battery pack that can be plugged into the powerbook (usb, firewire..) while it is in use that could extend the operating time while I am in class? Also if i bought an extra battery, is the switching of the battery a time consuming/difficult task or is it easy to do on the fly?
Thanks for all your help!

I haven't seen those big battery plates for recent notebook Macs (haven't looked too hard either), but they might exist. I suspect they could be problematic if you plugged an external in and it tries to charge the internal battery.
Changing the normal battery is pretty easy - you do have to put the computer to sleep, then you need a coin to unlock/eject the battery on the bottom. You can probably do all this in about 20 seconds with practice. Newer Technology advertises aftermarket batteries that promise a little more capacity than the originals. Also, you can adjust several settings to conserve power on battery - put the energy saver for reduced processor performance; dim the screen, turn off Airport wifi, quit any applications you aren't using that might be using a little CPU power; have sufficient RAM to reduce virtual RAM pageouts.

There are several such products on the market - but keep in mind that they often have a limited life span - something like 2000 cycles of charge/discharge. depedning on where you are using the system you might consider getting a power cord with plugs for car and airplane connectors - or get a DC to AC inverter. Belkin.com has a couple of inverters and coupon code 12345 shoudl get you 40% off their list price.

  • Can I use an external battery pack on my 17" Mac Book Pro?

    Hi
This may sound like a crazy question, but is it possible to safely use an external battery pack on my Mac Book Pro?.....specifically a Bescor Video Light battery pack which I can just plug my a/c power cable into. This would be very useful in the case of a local power failure (which actually may just happen tonight, as we are currently in the middle of a blizzard).
    Just wondering......
    Thanks,
    Anneita

Yes, you can use external battery packs — but I wouldn't use one that I wasn't perfectly certain was very carefully controlled.
External battery packs specifically designed for MBPs:

Another option, designed to protect sensitive equipment from power surges and enable uninterrupted computer usage during AC power outages and irregularities, is called an +uninterruptible power supply,+ and the leading manufacturer of such devices — which incorporate storage batteries of various capacities — is APC:

  • What kind of external battery pack do I need for a Macbook Pro?

Have a look here for the sizes and prices.
It is however, much better to get a USB external drive that comes with it's own power adapter to avoid issues when or if your USB port can't supply enough power to your external drive.
That issue however does happen rarely but it does happen.  Especially when connecting other devices to your other USB port while your external hard drive is connected to your other usb port.

  • What's the best external battery pack to bring when traveling abroad?

We're planning on going to Europe for our honeymoon and figured we'll probably need our phones to get around, translate things, etc and would hate to be in the middle of nowhere with a dead phone. Which external battery packs would you recommend? I'm open to getting more than one....one that's small and light and bring with me, and another to keep at the hotel.
    Thank you!

My favorite (and I have 3) is MyCharge: http://www.amazon.com/myCharge-Peak-6000-Rechargeable-Power/dp/B008PQAFTM/ref=sr _1_1?s=wireless&ie=UTF8&qid=1410566545&sr=1-1&keywords=mycharge.
The reason is that it is the only one that has a built in charger to recharge the MyCharge itself. Simply flip out the prongs and plug it in to any US outlet or any foreign outlet with a plug adapter. No separate power supply to carry around (and potentially lose). It also has built in plugs to charger other USB devices. You will need a Dock to Lightning adapter from Apple for the iPhone 5 and later, but it works fine with that also.

  • External Battery pack

I know there have been external battery packs utilizing AA and AAA batteries, has anyone used one with their Touch? What were your experiences?

    Hello,
I bought one of these out of a bargain bin in a local high street shop for £6:
    http://www.amazon.com/Belkin-Backup-Battery-Pack-iPod/dp/B00009KAPW
Works fine with my 1st Gen but be prepared for how massive four AA batteries are compared to the slinky iPod touch. I bought four rechargeable AA batteries at the same time to miminize the environmental impact.

  • External battery packs

Does anyone have a recommendation on a good external battery pack? I'm pretty sure my video usage will zap all the power on an upcoming overseas flight, so I'm looking at investing in the PowerStick by Audio Outfitters. Anyone have any experience with it? Or with others?
    Thanks for any suggestions!!

I was still going to go for the PowerStick, but it wasn't available. I got the TuneJuice instead, as you suggested, Deggie, and it worked fine. I haven't really put it to the test yet, but it seemed to do the job ok. Thanks for the tip. I would give you a green star, but it doesn't seem to be available.

  • Apple iPod shuffle External Battery Pack

Has anyone used this? It sounds like a cool idea especially for travelling where I can't recharge. does it use just regualr AA batteries? (on Amazon, it says AA in one place and AAA in another.)
And I read some reviews that said it ruined their Shuffle just by plugging it in. Any experience with that?
    thanks for any advice.

It will NOT work with the 2nd Gen Shuffle...think about HOW the Shuffle is connected to a powersource: through the headphone jack on its dock, thus rendering the headphone jack useless for connecting headphones to it. Some vendor MAY provide a new accessory which provides an audio out as well as a power source in teh future...

  • External battery pack for Classic + Belkin TuneTalk Stereo?

Can anyone recommend an external battery pack that would connect to the Belkin F8Z082-BLK TuneTalk Stereo recorder attached to an iPod Classic?
I need to double or triple the recording time in the field, which is only about 2 hours at the moment.
The external battery pack will have to provide power over the mini usb port in the bottom of the TuneTalk device.

OK, so looking into this a little bit more, the charger that comes with the iPhone is marked "iPos USB Power Adapter". It has an output of 4V @ 1A.
The old iPod Firewire charger I have and the car charger I have are rated at 12V @ 1A, so I'm going to stop using them post haste.

  • External battery packs for ipad2

I have been looking at numerous external batteries to recharge my iPad2. Any ideas on which one's are best?

The mother of all battery packs. ISound 16,000 mAH. I bought one last year and I love it.
Customer support can't be beat either, my first one had an issue with the power switch, I called them and 3 days later I had a brand new unit and they let me keep the original, no hassle, no questions asked.

  • External Battery Pack Voltage

Hi, I recently purchased an external Lithium Bbattery pack with a USB output. The output of the battery pack is 5.5 volts. Most USB outputs are 5.1 Volts as well as the wall charger. I have contacted Apple and no one seems to know the acceptable range of Voltage that he Ipad will support. Does anyone know if 5.5 Volts will be OK?
    Ken

...The output of the battery pack is 5.5 volts....Most USB outputs are 5.1 Volts as well as the wall charger...
USB is specified to be 5v, +/- 0.25v. (IOW, 4.75v - 5.25v.) Not 5.1v as you mentioned. 5.1v is within the acceptable range of the USB specification, but technically, it is a little high. I suspect you were measuring in a "no load" situation. To accurately measure the voltage, you must connect the load to the power supply. (e.g.: while the iPad is plugged in.) Most "wall bricks" will read high with no load. (Often 9v wall bricks will read 12v with no load. They're not broken, they just don't have good voltage regulation.)
If the 5.5v is what the manufacturer documentation says, then I wouldn't plug in my expensive iPad, since the manufacturer is not compliant with the USB specification. However, if the 5.5v is what you measured, then you'll need to take a more accurate measurement. Use some other "expendable" device like an old cellphone and strip the insulation off the wiring so that you can measure the voltage while the device is plugged in and the power pack is under load.
...I have contacted Apple and no one seems to know the acceptable range of Voltage that he Ipad will support...I still find it difficult to understand that Apple can not supply me with a Voltage Range.
FYI: The specs for USB are not set by Apple. They should have been able to tell you, but probably only an electrical engineer would know offhand, as it's aways "supposed to be" 5v. What the electrical engineer would have learned in all their studies is that the voltages specified are "nominal". That is not a concept that most non-engineers are familiar with. Thus the lack of an answer from Apple is because the people in customer support you talked too were not engineers.
In the past, typical TTL digital circuitry had a nominal range of +/- 0.5v. So 4.5v - 5.5v was acceptable for a 5v TTL circuit. With 3v circuitry, a 0.5v tolerance was a bit high and the trend from awhile ago was to 0.25v. Voltage regulators got smaller and cheaper so complying with a tighter nominal voltage is usually not a big deal unless the manufacturer decides to "go cheap."
But any device that is expected to be plugged in to a highly variable voltage source like a car power socket, often have a large nominal range. So my guess for the iPad is that you'd be ok, on the assumption that you got the 5.5v number from your measurements and not from any documentation. But the final decision to whether to use the power pack is up to you.

  • Will external battery packs damage the iphone internal battery?

I just received my the Xpal AP1200 that I purchased from Woot last week. My question is that since it's a case also can I leave it on the iPhone all the time?
Unlike the Mophie Juice Pack, this one does not have an on/off switch for engaging the external battery in the case.
If I leave it on all the time, use it as a case and simply charge the entire setup (battery pack and phone) at the same time am I going to damage or at least significantly shorten the internal iPhone battery?

The iPhone battery should be discharged every so often. See here for general info:
    http://www.apple.com/batteries/iphone.html
So I would say every so often you may want to discharge your iPhone through regular use and recharge it normally. I have the Mophie Pack and I don't use it all the time, only when I need it, despite it being a case and having the button. I prefer a "naked" iPhone....
