Powerbook fan going crazy

Ever since installing Leopard, my Powerbook G4 (1.67 Ghz) will start going crazy with few or no apps running at all. Activity Monitor doesn't show any errant behavior, but the fans act like I have a gagillion apps open.

who knows, there may be some process that starts to ramp up the fans and then quits. I installed the latest beta of OnyX with 10.5 compatibility and within seconds of it completing my MacBook fan started to rev. What I did notice, albeit very briefly, was a process called installdb (and user '_installer') running with close to 80% of CPU.

  • Mac Os 10.6.6 update start the fans goes crazy

    Hi to all
Some months ago (almost a year from now) my mac start to become hot after only a few minutes it started up and the fan goes crazy but I never realize why. I made some search on the internet but the only answer I found was using some software to reduce fan speed. It didn't work. I run the Hardware test but nothing strange. I also took my macbook to an apple certified repair center but they told me that nothing was wrong. I also ask to another repair center but same thing. So I left my macbook as it was with this super fan noise all the time. A quite disturbing thing but there was no solution and for what I'm doing my machine is ok so why change it? (It was the only solution they gave me)
Last day my hd broke down so I had to replace it. I took my macbook pro a1211 model to an apple repair center they change the hd with a new one.
So I reinstall everything for the beginning. I took my snow leopard dvd formatted the new hd, installed the os, iWork 2008, iLife 2008, Mamp, CSS Edit, Espresso, Pixelmator and few other application such as Firefox, Camino, Etc...
I use the macbook with mac os 10.6, because I had to finish some work, and with my big surprise for two days the machine was super silent no fans, no hot body ..... nothing. I never reboot it and still no fans and hot body wow.
Today I wanted to install the developer kit with ios 4.2 and so I had to update the Mac os x to version 10.6.6 as soon as I made the update after the reboot the fans start again to go like crazy and after 15 minutes of work the macbook body become very hot.
    The question is why?
    Anyone can help me?
    Thanks in advance
    Gianfranco

  • Fan going crazy when booting

When I boot up iMac, the fan goes crazy. After a moment it stops and is quiet again. I unplugged my power and plugged it in again but that does't work. I tried to start AHT by holding D when booting, but that didn't work. I didn't get any discs when I bought my Mac so I can't run AHT using the disc. How can this be fixed?
I also have Windows 7 installed but I don't know if this is relevant. The fan goes mental everytime i boot up. It doesn't matter whether I do that with Windows or OSX.

OS X Mountain Lion- Use Apple Hardware Test
Intel-based Macs- Using Apple Hardware Test

  • Fans going crazy, airport doesnt work and nor does iSight

    Hi
I have a 13 inch Macbook Pro, late 2010 model, 2.4 ghz, 4gb ram, so on, so forth
Just had the Logic board done as it died (intermittantly, then completely), and now the fans go crazy at most opportunities, sometimes Airport doesnt fire up (cures with a restart) and iSight doesnt work at all. It goes really slowly when the fans are going nuts. This is only using Chrome..
Any ideas? I'm falling out of love with this computer.

You have a real problem to deal with. I would recommend you download a utility like Snow Leopard Cache Cleaner and clear all user, system, and font caches. Then the following:
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. If you Quit the installer at this point the computer will restart.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
Let's see if that helps you out.

  • Fan going crazy every time we run anything  - system very slow. Connected?

System has slowed down dramatically of late. Now fan is going crazy. Are they connected? Any way to speed things up ?

You should be comparing it to the size of your hard drive. Look in About this Mac>more info>serial ATA which will give you the drive size. If it's the original, it probably is 160GB, so you have more than enough space.
Have you emptied the caches and reset the SMU? And vacuumed the air vents?
You have amazingly little memory. I would add at least 1GB, which you can find at [macsales.com] or [smalldog.com] or [newegg, com]. Make sure that whatever you buy has a lifetime guarantee. I suspect once you add more memory, your troubles will be over.

  • My fan goes crazy when watching vedio clips?? Why??

Everytime when I watch video clip or movies with RealPlayer, the fan of my Macbook just goes crazy. It sounds like a jet. Is it something wrong with the Macbook or the Realplayer?
Does anybody else have experienced this issue?
    How could it be solved??
    Thanks

    Like this:
    1) Click on the blue apple in the top left of your screen.
    2) About this Mac
    3) Click the "More Info" button
    4) When the System Profiler opens, click on Applications. It is in the left pane near the bottom.
    5) The right should now contain all the names of your applications in alphabetical order. Look for RealPlayer.
    6) Once found, click on it to clearly highlight it.
    7) You should see:
    Version: 10.1.0
    Kind: Universal
If you don't see that, then uninstall RealPlayer and download the correct version from:
    http://www.real.com
Read everything VERY carefully. Look for the Intel version of the player.
I just realized that you might be asking how you know if you have the latest system and firmware updates. If that is the question, then:
    1) Click on the blue apple in the upper left of your screen.
    2) Click "Software Update..."
    3) Download 10.4.7 (if you don't have it already)
    4) Download Intel Firmware update (again, only if you don't have it already)
    5) Reset your machine when prompted by OS X.
That's about I can type right now (my brain is pudding). Post back if this STILL wasn't helpful enough (or at all).

  • MBP Fans going crazy!!! HELP!!

I am going to give you all the WHOLE story!
    (grab pop corn)
four weeks ago I came home and heard a loud "roaring" noise from my room. When I got in there I noticed it was my MBP's fans. They are spinning at full speed. Well the MBP was on but nothing would come on the screen. I took out the battery and tried again and AS SOON as I touched the power button the fans would already be at full blast but nothing would come on the screen.
I pretty much figured the logic board went out on this thing, so I took it to get repaired. Well the total price on the repair is...$1,735.79. I just got it back today and AS SOON as you press the power button THE FANS ARE SUCKING SMALL BIRDS FROM THE SKY! but this time the screen comes on and I am able to work for about 30 minutes then the battery is completly dead.
I got iStat pro and and a couple of other Fan/heat monitoring devices, and it will NOT show the fans...Pretty much it says
    Fan 1: 0RPM
    Fan 2: 0RPM
Now keep in mind this happens as soon as I power it on. I can boot into windows and I still get the same problem.
Also another anoying thing, my date and time is suppose to sync up with Apple..for some reason im stuck in January 3rd 2001!!!
Someone please help me out on here I am going crazy.

Have you been back to wherever you had the repair done? Clearly something is very wrong here. Whoever did the repair should have tested your Mac and made sure it was working properly before giving it back to you. I assume that you mentioned the fans going all out as a problem? Obviously this very expensive repair did not fix the problem.
There should be some sort of warranty on the work that was done. Both on the labor and on the replacement logic board itself.
The error code you got on the right fan may indicate that it is beginning to fail. If they keep running like this, they will both fail.
I have no idea why iStatPro should indicate 0 RPM when the fans must be running at 6000 RPM. It's almost as if it is reporting the exact opposite of what is really happening. I wonder if it is possible to plug the fans in incorrectly?
    Good luck!

  • New MacBook Pro, fan goes crazy on iPhoto screen saver

I just got a new 15in MacBook Pro (running Lion of course) with the following specs:
       - 8 gigs RAM
       - 2.2 GHz
       - 500 gig 7200 hard drive
I had my screen saver set to cycle randomly through 350 pictures from my wedding. Within 1 minute of the screensaver activating, my fan kicks in full speed. When I go into Activity Monitor (while the fan is still going nuts) no processes are using more than 7% CPU. Within a couple of minutes of resuming work, the screen saver dies down and everything is fine.
Does anyone know why this is happening? I'm a programmer and even having multiple applications in active use, the fan doesn't kick on. If I switch to Arabesque screen saver, the fan doesn't act crazy. I suppose it's not a big deal to use a different screen saver but there's no logical reason for my fan to go insane when all it's doing is cycling through some pictures.
I did try the steps to reset the SMC but it did not seem to solve the issue.
    Any help appreciated!

You were right One of my other iPhoto albums must have corrupted pictures because I went to a backup that contained only the wedding pictures and everything is fine. Always nice when the answer happens to be something simple!
    Thanks!!

  • Fan going crazy after I just got optical drive repaired

Well my fan now sounds like a loud air conditioner or something after getting it fixed at a mac store. Just got it back today because I had to replace my optical drive. I'm assuming it's not dust since it just started, and I do have an appointment set up for it to be looked at but I was hoping to get some comments from you guys.
My computer's fans have never been this loud. And it won't go away either. They start up right when I start the computer up. I could leave it for 5 minutes without doing anything on it and they would still sound like a jet engine or something. Makes me afraid that my comp is going to fry itself or something.
Idk but I think the store must have messed up on something to make it do this. I have heard the fans before but this is crazy.

hmm ... i wonder if your issue might be related to the experience another user had in this thread: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2434866&tstart=0.

  • Certain applications overwork my macbook and the fan goes crazy. Is there a fix or solution for this?

I purchased a 13.3" MacBook Pro in February of 2010. About a month later, I began to notice that certain applications that don't require much, Safari, MSWord, iTunes, were causing the fans to kick in at crazy speeds and the base of the computer was too hot to touch. Is there a patch or fiz for this, or should I return my macbook for a new?

  • 1.8 Power PC G5 Fan goes crazy and stays that way!

So this has been happening for about 2 weeks now. I've tried the suggested "Pull the power cord out and let the SMU restart" thing and that has no effect on it. I would rather not take it in to an Apple Store. Any suggestions? It will usually start up just fine and then give the occasional rev about 10 minutes after boot, then 15 minutes after boot its going all out loud fan noise. If I let it go, it will die down again...but then stop. My temperatures are fine.

    Hi Cody,
Might be time to replace the PRAM Battery, 4 years is close to their lifespan...
See which one your G5 has...

  • After powering on, iBook G4 won't start up and fan goes crazy

I closed the lid of my iBook almost all of the way, but for some reason the display turned off. I'm not sure if it went to sleep or not; I can't remember if the front light flashed or not. I pressed the power button, but it wouldn't turn back on. I think I then held down the power button and it powered on, but the fan just started going at full speed and the computer never booted up. Since then, it refuses to boot; the fan just spins at full speed and the screen stays blank. I've tried resetting the PRAM and and PMU but it wouldn't work. Usually, the fan immediately starts going, but after resetting the PMU it takes a few seconds before the fan turns on. When I first press the power button, I can feel the hard drive "click" on. Once the CD drive did made those weird noises it's supposed to make, but the rest of the time it never does even that. It also never chimes. I'd really appreciate any help or suggestions. Thanks!

    Welcome to Apple Discussions
The display is designed to automatically go into sleep mode when you shut the lid. That part is normal.
However, this part is not: it sounds like the wire connected to backlight on the lid is shorting out, preventing your machine from starting. The wire runs near the lid's hinge. Seems opening/closing the lid over time can cause the wire surface to degrade. Once the wire itself is exposed, the machine won't turn on if there is an electrical short.
If this is what has happened to your machine (sure seems like it from your description) you'll have to return the machine for repair.

  • G5 Dual 2G fan goes crazy on startup

My G5 Dual 2GHz computer won't startup. The power light goes on, in about 10 seconds the fan starts up and keeps getting louder and louder and louder! It sounds like a phaser overload. This has been happening every now and then (maybe once a month) and the fan would power down with the startup screen appearing simultaneously. However, now the fan just keeps going and going and going!
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
    Paul

I just wanted to add a few details from my post above:
I have two monitors hooked up and have unhooked one of them to help reduce the variables, but still no luck.
I usually run an external hard drive, but again, I have it unhooked while I'm trying to get the machine running.
This problem seems to be prevelant, judging from all the posts here. Are we all totally screwed with this problem. If I get a new machine, should I consider another G5 tower... or maybe just go iMac?
    Thanks!

  • New install - fans going crazy!

Following a smooth install yesterday evening, I brought over my photo library [11,000+ images] from iPhoto and while that went smooth-ish, since then the fans have been set to take off with my G5 Quad. If I try to quit Aperture - as I did last night - I get this alert message:
"Aperture is currently processing previews... ", with an option of continuing the 'process' or quiting anyway. I quit it.
This morning, same thing again... screaming fan noise.
My question: is this normal during this 'preview process' only, or is this incessant fan noise a price to pay for using Aperture?
    PowerMac G5 Quad + PowerBook G4 Ti 15" + iMac G5 20"   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

I have a Quad and haven't had take-off fans. I have had more fan noise vs. 1.1, and running activity monitor shows more cpu activity than in the past.
As for Previews, if you don't need them, suspend or delete them. They are needed when using master images referenced outside Aperture, for Aperture slideshows, for drag-n-drop to other apps. and for iLife/iWork integration via the Media browser in those apps.
I set my prefs to off and i build previews on a project by project basis when I'm finished with that project (they build alongside/just shortly after doing any edits to an image and can generally bog down the overall productivity).
Also consider reducing the res./quality of the Previews (Aperture/Preferences) if you do need them.
Since doing the above, fan noise is not an issue at all (my ambient temp. conditions are relatively cool).
    G.

  • Fan Going Crazy!

i was sitting at home the other night watching the tv when i could hear this noise which seemed to be in the distance and which was getting closer all the time. at first i thought it was something outside but then i noticed that the poster which i have behind my PowerMac was coming off the wall with the fans on the G5 going from a steady hum to an absolutely scary rocket engine level. it was still getting louder and louder and i was scared it was going to blow up or something so i turned it off on the wall. what just happened here? it happened once since as well. what i'm afraid off is that it happens at some stage when i'm out and i return to a blown out computer! do i need to reset the smu?
    thanks

sorry for taking so long in getting back but it just happened again last night and i copied the system.log but the console log was only a few lines so i didn't bother copying that but if you also need this i can easily get it.... thanks once again. peter.
