Powerbook fault on start up

Hi
My PB is a few years old. It was fine until earlier, but when I start it up, everything works but the top right hand of the Finder bar (with the time, Airport Express indicator and power). All I get is the spinning beach ball there, and I can't connect to the Internet. Have shut down and restarted several times, but with the same problem.
Fingers crossed that someone cleverer than me can help!
Mark

Hi again, Mark.
Please try these classic tricks (again). Reset the P-Ram ( option-command-P-R before startup chime, wait till a 2nd startup chime to release), reset the Power Management Unit ( unplug PSU and battery, press power button for at least 10", reconnect PSU and if you want the battery and start up). You will have to reset the clock afterwards. If this doesn't work, report here again.
You can also try to start up from your install disc ( press C while starting up), see if you can run Disc Utility from that and attempt to repair your startup Hdd and repair permissions. Or startup in target mode, hook the PB onto another Mac and repair disc ( only then repairing disc permissions will not work, because it only does so on an internal disc).
It does look a bit like your system is corrupt so you may have to reinstall it, once you've made sure the machine starts all right from a CD.
Also, once I had a case of a PB running completely wild because of a faulty Airport card, so try and remove this if all else fails. Instructions on http//www. ifixit.com or something.
Good luck and keep us posted!

What can I do to start the program again, when it does not answer? The only message I get is that there is a serious problem.

Thanks a lot for your quick reply! However, it works again, after a restart!

  • PowerBook Won't Start with Extra Gig Of Ram

    Hello World,
Well...so much for do it yourself. God knows I've done it before but here's the story. I just bought a used Powerbook G4 with OX 10.5.8 running at 1.5 Ghz with one Gig DDRSDRAM. I bought another gig stick of ram...put both of them in to night and the Powerbook will not start. So in the interest of trouble shooting...I installed each gig of ram individually. They each said...individually...that they were 1gig DDR SDRAM stick. The computer started with each stick of ram so I know they both work. I was under the impression that the G4 Powerbook could take 2 gig of ram max in configuration of 2---1 gig sticks.
OK....There it is. Any ideas or help would be much appreciated. Thank you Dave R

AFAIK you are correct that the 2GB configuration should work. There is a history of one DIMM slot going bad, but then the computer should still start, just not show the bad slot in the total RAM. You might still try running with one stick in one slot, then the other slot as a check.
Some users anecdotally seem to find the machines fussy about RAM, although usually manifested in erratic operation, not failure to start.
What exactly happens when you try to start with 2GB? Nothing at all? No start sound? No optical or HD drive noise? No screen light/response? No sleep light blinks?

  • Powerbook -can't start up in single user mode or from CD-why?

My daughter was gifted a Powerbook (15"). I've upgraded it to 10.5.8. It has enough speed, (1.67 Ghz), 2 gigs RAM- but it is a sticky little machine- it freezes a lot. Froze twice during the upgrade, froze once during login, Froze once while trying to do a software update, froze once while trying to get into the system preferences. It freezes pretty consistently after 15-30 minutes or so, no matter what it's doing -if a program is running or not. I tried downloading AppleJack to run a diagnostic. That requires starting up from single user mode. I tried to do that , but the machine just opens to the login screen. I also tried running TechTool from the CD, and the machine wouldn't start up from CD either. What should I try next?

Try this one for some information.

  • Powerbook g4 wont start up

Went to turn on my 15inch powerbook g4 and it was just sitting at the blue screen. then after a minute it flashed black and the screen came back on with a blue screen and a picture of a folder with a flashing question mark and the finder icon.
I inserted my diskwarrior cd to try and fix the problem. Restarted the cpu and held down c button. Nothing happened. just the same folder with the ?
i have tried everything at startup.
Holding down all the different buttons i have read about.
I want to try and restart with the osx install discs but i cant get the diskwarrior cd out.
I have tried holding down the eject button
tried holding down the trackpad button at start up even tried to type in eject-disc in firmware. nothing will get the cd out.
Any suggestions so i can try and boot up with osx install disk?
Also everything worked fine the day before i.e. disc drive and hard drive
    Thanks

    HI,
back on with a blue screen and a picture of a folder with a flashing question mark and the finder icon.
Flashing question mark on boot indicates your Mac can't find a System Folder to boot from. Try booting while holding down the Option key which should prompt the Startup Manager window. You can then select the startup disk. If the PBook boots to the Desktop, move the DiskWarrior icon to the Trash. Hopefully that will eject that disk.
At this point, definitely boot from your install disc, run Disk Utility in case the startup disk needs repairs.
Insert your install disk and Restart, holding down the "C" key until grey Apple appears.
Go to Installer menu and launch Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in the left panel.
Select First Aid in the Main panel.
*(Check S.M.A.R.T Status of HDD at the bottom of right panel. It should say: Verified)*
Click Repair Disk on the bottom right.
If DU reports disk does not need repairs quit DU and restart.
If DU reports errors Repair again and again until DU reports disk is repaired.
When you are finished with DU, from the Menu Bar, select Utilities/Startup Manager.
Select your start up disk and click Restart
While you have the Disk Utility window open, look at the bottom of the window. Where you see Capacity and Available. *Make sure there is always 10% to 15% free disk space*
If you can't boot from your install disc, try booting in Safe Mode
You can verify the startup disk in Safe Mode, but not repair. Also, if you can't boot from your install disc, booting in Safe Mode you may be able to eject the DW disc.

  • Powerbook G4 only start safe mode

Hello i have powerbook g4 with cpu 1.25ghz. I use to have mac os4.1.1 installed. Lately had freexing problem and as it was a very old install i tried a fresch install. I downloed os as i lost my original dvd. Tried 10.4.3. Install go fine but never start when it finish. Only in safe mode will start. What could i check?please help

When there is a problem with an OS X, such as those usually installed from DVD system media
you would need to use the boot-able install-restore DVD (or later retail DVD, if not original grey
color label discs) to see about repairing the problem. You cannot update or upgrade to make a
problem go away. And an offer/download of a complete OS X system (torrent?) is not legal.
With an older computer, there is a fair chance the original hard disk drive may be failing; so that
is something to think about when you have an internal hard disk drive that spins thousands of
rotations per minute and gets written to & read from millions/billions of times a year....
The download update is only a minor step, and if you chose to download that from somewhere
other than the Software Update (via computer access to Apple Server) the actual one to seek
if everything was in great shape with your computer, would be the Combo 10.4.11 last update.
These steps are considered updates & not upgrades. The distinction is more than a word deep.
You will have to locate the correct DVD install media since a download from the internet of a
complete OS X Tiger 10.4 system is not available online; anything you may find very likely is
an illegal download and may be full of bogus content, such as malware or missing files, etc.
Apple no longer sells these discs, you may contact Apple sales support and have your product
serial number (PowerBook G4) available to ask an OS X specialist, if it is possible to get some
kind of operating system install DVD for that old a computer. The newest it could run would be
Leopard 10.5 (install from DVD, then download update to 10.5.8) however the Tiger 10.4 DVD
may be an expensive item if you look at Amazon or eBay sites online. Expect to pay...
You may have some luck if there happens to be an Apple User Group in your locality or if a
school or university has a computer lab and has not cleaned out their archive of old OS X.
School rummage sales, second hand shops, and other local finds are random luck events.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Powerbook won't start, got message i don't understand in single-user mode

    PowerBook G4 Mac OS X (10.3.9)
About a week ago my powerbook (purchased in Dec '03, running 10.3.9) froze while I was using it. I had to manually shut it off, and then it would not restart (got stuck on grey screen with gear). I was able to start it up again once in Safe Mode, at which point I downloaded and ran Macaroni. Upon reboot, it wouldn't start up at all, staying on the grey screen for 15-20 minutes before I gave up. Now, I've tried starting it in Single-user mode. At the command I typed "fsck -fy" and the following message was returned:
"Singleuser boot -- fsck not done
    Root device is mounted read-only
If you want to make modifications to files,
    run ' /sbin/fsck -y' first and then '/sbin/mount -uw /'
    localhost:/ root# "
Does anyone have any idea what this means?
I am expecting the worse, I made a bootable back up in august, but was hoping to get it to start at least once more so i could update that back up or email myself some files. The only other possibly relevant info is that when it froze last week it started making really really loud repetitive noises (as if the hard drive was stuck?). For a while there I was also hearing an odd humming noise whenever i plugged in the AC adapter.
Well, any help would be truly appreciated.
    thanks in advance..
    PowerBook G4   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

The two observations may be related. It is possible that the power adapter has developed a fray or short, and is giving insufficient power for the hard drive to operate properly. Do you have another Mac you can connect the machine to via Target Disk Mode after getting a replacement power adapter?
I would also get a copy of Prosoft Data Rescue and an external hard drive that is Firewire at least as big as the internal hard drive. That will give you a chance to recover information if it is at all reachable.
If the directory is damaged Alsoft Disk Warrior may be able to repair it, but I'd only run that after determining Prosoft Data Rescue is unable to rescue any usable data.
I would not attempt to run any norton utilities on it, and if you have in the past don't do it again, as Disk Doctor and Speed Disk have been known to damage Mac OS X more than fix it.

  • Powerbook does not start in 10.5.4

I have a G4 Powerbook 1.5 with 10.4.11 on the mainhard drive. Since I have a lot of graphic apps I could not install 10.5.4 on the same drive because of limited space. The 10.5.4 installer allowed me to install it on one of my Firewire drives. Once the install was done I restarted then went to startup disk and chose 10.5.4 but the cpu only starts in 10.4.11. I see the 2 folders in the startup disk but I tried 3 x and still can't start in 10.5.4?
    any help?

I suspect that the FW drives are not bootable. Not all external drives are bootable - it requires special firmware.
If you are going to buy a new drive, I personally recommend LaCie d2 quadros. They have USB, FW 400 and 800 and eSATA interfaces and come with all the cables. They have a 3-position switch, On/Off/Auto and in Auto they sleep until needed. I have been using 3 of them for a year and have had zero problems.

  • Cant start my powerbook G4 from start up

UNABLE TO FIND THE SOLUTION TO MY PROBLEM

Could you provide a little more information?  Describe what does happen .... assuming that you have a charged battery (LEDs light up when pressed on the battery) and/or plugged into an operating wall electrical socket.  You push the start button and what happens? Does anything display on the screen? Does the Powerbook DVD drive make noises? etc .... This type of information will help us to help you.

  • PowerBook will not start up

Okay, so my Powerbook recently had a heart attack on me.
I was working on my PBook, when I was prompted to update to the latest verion of Java. I accepted the update and everything went well. Later that evening I went to put in a cd into the optical drive and it wouldnt accept it. As in, it didnt register that a disk was being put in. I restarted my PBook to find that the start up would make the start up noise, and then went to the grey screen with the apple in the centre. At this point, the system completely stops, gets stuck, does not make any "thinking" noises, and will not go past that screen.
I looked for help in the support section, and I have attempted starting up in safe mode, to no avail (it just stays at the grey screen). I reset the PRAM, and nothing occurred. I then attempted to reset the PMU, and still, nothing (it will start up without or with the power adapter). Following that, I tried putting the startup disk in, but the cd drive still isnt working. Finally, I tried to start up in single-user mode, but it just tells me that...
'Extension "com.apple.driver.KeyLargoATA" has no active kernal dependency.
Firewire (OHCI) Apply ID 31 built-in now active, GUID 000d93ff fe47d2b2; max speed s800'
and then gets stuck, without letting me use the prompt to run a hard disk check. However, the Firewire bit, doesnt always appear.
    Any help?

Okay, I tried to boot into safe mode again, but this time held the shift key for longer. After the computer ran through all of the 'thinking' noises, it immediately shut itself off. The power adapter was plugged in at the time, so it isn't just that the batter was low.
    Any other suggestions?

  • Powerbook refusing to start up.

    Hi,
My powerbook is refusing to start up, it gets to a white screen with the grey apple logo, and then stops, It just stays on that screen.
i've used the install disc to use disk utility it verifies and repairs my permissions fine.
But after trying to repair my disc has the disc contained an error, it couldn't complete it's task, the message i was given was:
Keys out of order (this was in red)
    rebuilding catalog B-tree
The volume Mackintosh HD not repaired
Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit (-9972)
    and that was that.
i've also tried doing a firmware boot. Now I'm really not sure what's going on? or what to do, I've got files on there which I havent had a chance to back up do to working on them at the time. And so I need them, any advice? is my hard drive failing? because this problem has cropped up a number of times but I've usually managed to get it back up and running after a few attempts.

I had exactly the same problem!! but after i tried to repair the disk, fortunatly it managed to work. but then then as soon as i got the machine re-started i backed up the disk, did a 7 pass erase and then started from scratch.. it was a painful exercise but taught me the importance of an external back-up. What i would suggest is that you find another mac, and see if you can access your HDD via the other mac in firewire diskmode. This should enable you to get the data you need of your HDD and then do what i did... i.e. erase and re-install.. Hope that help.. and good luck.

  • Powerbook Won't Start Up or is Very, Very Slow

On Tuesday night, I noticed that my Powerbook was very slow in loading pages in Safari (it took ten seconds to be able to enter text in a field). I had to restart several times.
On Wednesday night, I could get the chime, the startup screen with Apple and wheel, then it went to a blue screen with nothing on it. After many attempts, it finally started up, but Safari was very slow again (in fact it quitted every time I clicked a link).
Tonight, it gets to the grey startup screen, shows the wheel for a bit then completely shuts down!
I tried to use Migration Assistant to move across files to my new Mac Pro, before it dies, but it never got further than "Waiting for Disks to Appear" even after an hour or so.
    Any plans?

You might try getting Disk Warrior to try and repair/recover your hard drive. DW has a much better success rate than does Disk Utility.
You should get an an actual Disk from a retail store instead of downloading. Must also be sure on your make/model/v10.x.x
I have never run it, but do a search on these boards and you will get a feel for how people swear by it.
    Good Luck.
