PowerBook frozen on "Installing Mac OS..." after BSD postupgrade

Last night I was having trouble installing on my PowerBook (1GHZ TiBook), the DVD was recognized once and after a reboot wasn't recognized again.
This morning I thought I'd give it a shot again, and the DVD was recognized and a reboot took me through the installer. I chose an Upgrade Install (as I had on my MBP), made sure to verify the disk, and sent it on its way.
After about an hour, the install froze at "About 24 minutes" and after the BSD subsystem installation. The last message in Installer Log is from an hour ago (paraphrased):
6:36:02 payloadExtractor: Receipt closed in 8.27 sconds
6:36:02 OSInstaller: run postupgrade script for BSD
6:36:08 installdb: done. (7.107u + 2.003s)
Its been over an hour now and no progress has been made.
Does anyone know:
a) if I restart, can I restart the installation as if its the first time?
b) is there an option which doesn't involve formatting the hard drive? (i can restore from backups, but would prefer not to)

Most CD-ROM drive enclosures have two connectors. One gets the data cable. The other one should get a SCSI Terminator device. If your second connector is empty, that could cause exteremly slow operation of everything on the Bus, including the Hard drive.
An OS 8 or 9 install usually completes in well under an hour.

  • PowerBook 540c issues installing Mac OS 8.1

    Hello,
I have a PowerBook 540c with 36 MB RAM and 512 MB hard drive.
It had Mac OS 7.6 on it, but kept freezing randomly while using, so I figured I'd reinstall the OS.
I got a copy of Mac OS 8.1 (since I see that this is the max supported OS), and it's on CD Rom. So I connected an external CD Rom via SCSI and it's booting to the install disk OK. But everything about the install is taking about 30 times longer than I would expect.
I tried finishing the process last night and it stalled halfway through installation. did not continue past.
I've never used SCSI aside from this, so not sure if it's expected or not. But does it really take 12 hours to install 200 megabytes of data from a SCSI CD-ROM onto a PowerBook 540c?
To be sure it wasn't corrupt data on my hard disk, I zeroed all data on the hard drive before initializing and did a low-level format. I changed the SCSI ID from 3 to 2, reset the power manager, and rebooted to the SCSI drive, but it's still sluggish.
This is purely a hobby, no big deal. I'm just curious if external SCSI CD-ROM installs are normal to go this slowly, or if my machine is possibly causing the issue?

  • HT1338 I failed to re-install Mac OSX after I removed it while removing my personal info. I forgot my Apple ID & password at the time. I have now recovered them with my windows type spare computer. How can I reinstall OSX on my MacBook Air?

I failed to re-install the OSX on my MacBook Air after erasing my personal information in preparation to sell the computer. Reason: I forgot my Apple ID and password. I have recovered my ID and password on my wondows computer. There is no software on my MacBook Air right now. How do I re-install OSX?

Install Mavericks, Lion/Mountain Lion Using Internet Recovery
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
Boot to the Internet Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND-OPTION- R keys until a globe appears on the screen. Wait patiently - 15-20 minutes - until the Recovery main menu appears.
Partition and Format the hard drive:
    1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
    2. After DU loads select your newly installed hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion. Mavericks: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks and click on the Install button. Be sure to select the correct drive to use if you have more than one.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet
if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
This will install the OS originally installed on your computer. If you plan to sell or give away the computer, then do not upgrade it or the purchaser will not be able to use it.

  • Can't install Mac OS after installing Windows, Can't install Mac OS after installing Windows

I have dual-booted Windows 7 the last year on my Macbook Pro, but today when I started my computer, I just got the white screen. I tried holding down the startup keys(c to boot from CD, d to do hardware test, alt to see boot options, etc), but NOTHING works. When I held down d I could enter the hardware test once, but then I got the message "Apple hardware test does not support this machine". I've also been able to choose to boot from Mac CD a couple of times, but then I just see the Apple, and it never goes to where I can actually install it. What can I do to get back Mac OS on my machine?

The firmware restore cd doesn't start, boot or anything visible on the screen, it just loads it behind the scenes, does the flashy or beepy thing.
Reboot twice and see if the at boot key commands work again using the OS X install disk, option key or command r or command option r while booting. (you never mentioned what OS X version or machine your using)
It's possible a recent firmware update occurred (software update or AppStore) and bricked your EFI, the version you get from the website download is older because they don't release it there until it's been tested in the field like on people like you.
If a newer firmware is on the machine already and it's borked, the older one your using won't load, only newer versions are accepted by the hardware.
If this is the case, your only choice is to have the logicboard replaced, I hope you have AppleCare.
You also could have made a mistake and downloaded the wrong one, so it's refusing to apply it.
    Need machine/operating system identification help?
Find the serial number, thus the model number and thus gives the operating system that originally came with the machine. However gives not what operating system version the boot drive was later upgraded to. Do not use older OS X verisons to repair newer verisons. It is possible to use the original operating system version installed on another boot drive to recover files from a later operating system non-booting drive.

  • Problem installing Mac 10.4 on Powerbook G4 running Mac Os 10.4.3

    Greetings everyone!
I'm having hard time. I have Powerbook G4 1.67GHZ/512MB/15 inch display now running Mac OS 10.4.3. Well, I'm trying to reinstall Mac OS 10.4 by doing clean installation - that is by wiping out all the old files. Eachtime I put Mac OS 10.4 DVD and click on "Install Mac OS X" icon, a Mac OS message "click" on "Restart" button pops up. After clicking "Restart" button, normally the computer restarts, the gray screen appears with that little wheel, it then goes to the blue screen and thats all I see. Just blue screen. Nothing happens. Then I shut down the computer and restart it again while Ejecting the Mac OS 10.4 DVD out of the Computer, and then it starts without any problem and comes back to its original state.
Can you please help me. Thanks.
    PowerBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

I don't think the DVD is damaged since it worked fine on my old G4 desktop.
The reason I'm trying to reinstall OS 10.4 is because I have received the computer from a family member with all his files and data in it. I want to get rid of it all and start from scratch for my personal use - if possible. If not, I could settle for less.
I want to explain few issues if that helps. I first tried installing Mac OS 10.3 to my Powerbook running Mac OS 10.4.3. I put OS 10.3 CD, started computer with C key held down, and all that came up was gray screen with 1 inch black line to the left of the Apple logo, and remained there - never making it to the blue screen. I shut of the computer, took the Mac OS 10.3 out of the Powerbook, restarted without the CD, and the computer was back to the desktop.
Then I tried installing 10.4, which goes past the gray screen, and gets stuck in the blue screen. I ejected the 10.4 DVD, and computer was back to normal (to the desktop)
It sounds like you inserted the wrong or a damaged DVD and neither the installation nor erasure took place. In that case, let's get started again on the right foot.
Tell me why you want to erase your hard drive? Were you experiencing some technical issue, and if so what? Let's troubleshoot that situation with the least harmful method.

  • Installing 9.1 on a 12-inch Powerbook G4 in a Mac OS 10.4.8 environment

After reading several posts under this heading and checking several documents under the SUPPORT tab I am much wiser, but still without a solution.
    What I have learned:
I can use neither my 9.1 English nor my 9.0 Japanese installer disks to boot up my Powerbook. This I already knew through several actual attempts, but I was hoping that there was somthing that I did not know. I know longer suffer from that dillusion.
    So, what next?

    Thank you for responding.
The CPU speed of my 12-inch PB G4 is 1 GH.
If it is of any help, you will find below a copy of the messages I receive when I click on the Classic icon in my system's preference window:
"You do not have a version of Mac OS 9 installed that supports Classic. Install Mac OS 9.1 or later (Classic Support)."
"There is no volume with a Mac OS 9 system folder for Classic to use."
Once again, the problem lies with my getting a copy of either of my two Mac OS 9 system folders onto my G4.
Perhaps I should make additional (see Other Details) mention that I am already running Classic on my G3 and have a copy of Japanese Mac OS 9.1 installed in a Mac OS 10.3.9 environment. Can I use that system folder on my PB G4 in a Mac OS 10.4.8 environment?
Finally, my reason for wanting to install Classic on my G4 is to reduce my travel luggage and run Japanese software on it that is compatible with neither Mac OS 9.2 nor Mac OS 10.x.
Your continued assistance would likely be helpful.

After installing Mac OSX Snow Leopart 10.6.3 my HP Photosmart C5500 won't scan to computer.  The printer is working. What do I have to do to be able to scan again?

Often, you have to download updated vendor software drivers when you switch operating systems. HP doesn't list a C5500 on their web site, however, here's the link to the OS X 10.6 C5540 software.  If you have one of the other C55xx models, look for the updated driver/scan software on their software/driver download section of HP.Com.

  • Installed new software, after restart black screen with Darwin/BSD promt

    Hi
I have been struggling with thisissue. I installed some new software, a webcam driver called ilook 1321. I restarted my computer but forgot to take the disc out!
Now when I start my ibook G4 i get the black screen with Darwin/BSD (localhost) (console) and login. It accepts my usual login and password, then tells me my last login details and leaves me with localhost: Clarekristensen$.
I have done the disk utility repair, no problems, I also did the fcsk commands, but still goes back to the Darwin command.
I tried to do the Repair disk permissions but this failed with the message "no valid packages". On disc check I saw I had 25.6 gb of space left.
I am now at a complete loss what to do next. I have not backed up for a while so really don't want to re-install Mac OS X and wipe my disk.
    Hopefully yours

Hi Clarek BsD, and a warm welcome to the forums again!
    On that error...
Mac OS X 10.3, 10.4: Disk Utility shows a "No Valid Packages" alert...
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25704-no
    Here's the steps I'd take...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
If it can't repair for any reason, stop here and report back.
Appears to be time for an Archive & Install, which gives you a new OS, but can preserve all your files, pics, music, settings, etc., as long as you have plenty of free disk space...

A PowerBook G4 can't run Snow Leopard OS 10.6, however, it can run Leopard OS 10.5. But you must use a retail (black) Leopard install DVD.

  • Can't Install Mac OS 10.4 in Apple PowerBook G4 Titanium

    Hello!
I have an Apple PowerBook G4 Titanium (400Mhz). My system crash when I tried to enter and hang up in the Apple logo. I used Diskwarrior and TechTool Pro to identify the problem, but there;s no error. I inserted the 10.4 installer and format the had disk. When I tried to install Mac OS 10.4, I receive the following error:
"Essentials Installation. An error ocurred, try again"
This appears a few seconds and the screen goes blue forever. I checked the surface hard disk with TechTool Pro again and the HD seems to be OK.
Anyone can help me to know why when I tried to install 10.4, the installation hang up in the Essentials part?.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hello and Thanks for answer:
Yes, I have the Retail Tiger Installer disk. The problem is WHEN the installation is taking part. When a installer disk don't work with the computer, the message "This software can't be installed in this computer" and the SHUTDOWN or RESTART button appears.
In this case, all work OK until the part INSTALLING ESSENCIALS when the screen goes blue. Now, I install Mac OS 10.3 and all the installation go OK. Upgrade via Software Update to 10.3.9 and update again via Installer CD 10.4 and all works OK. Now i'm upgrading to 10.4.11 using again Software Update. The problem is WHEN i try to install from the Apple Mac OS 10.4 Retail direct to the PowerBook G4. I tried zap the PRAM and the problem persist. NOTE: When I purchase the 10.4 DVD I make an security copy. I use the security copy and the error show up....then I use the original DVD suspicious an damage in the backup disk, but the original make the same error.
