PowerBook G3 - dead as a dodo! Please help - any suggestions?

My friend hates all things computer.
She bought in 2001 a state-of the art brand new Powerbook G3 (best spec), I think, used it once and put it in the airing cupboard for 6 years!!!!!
She now needs to use it! So out it came and was dead, deader than a dead thing and brought it to me.
I plugged it into the mains - nothing.
Tried the three keys (ALT CONTRL DELETE - apple version) and nothing
Tried PRAM reset thingy
Took out battery tried all of the above
Tried reset key
Tried a different battery (one in the box)
Tried all of the above
Nothing, no light, no flicker, no alarm, nothing,.......
Now I wondered whether it needed a PRAM Battery? I saw one mentioned on Google. Could this be the problem? Where do I get another?
If we got the thing working, could she upgrade it to OSX? It is currently not running OS9.
What else can you think of that I could do to this dodo?
Thanks
Frances

Frances,
Your friend probably has the Powerbook G3 FireWire M7572, a.k.a. Pismo.

What often happens when a powerbook is stored for any length of time is the power manager becomes corrupted and a normal power manager reset will not correct the issue. There is a simple fix, however.
- Remove the main battery, optical drive module, and disconnect the power adapter. Place a support behind the display so the 'book does not tip backwards.
- Lift off the keyboard and lay it face down on the palm rest; do not disconnect the keyboard ribbon cable.
- You will see two round, brown batteries in a black case between the HD and palm rest...these are the internal rechargeable backup batteries a.k.a. PRAM batteries. You will also see a red/white/black pigtail wire running from these batteries to the logic board. With a pair of needlenose pliers, carefully disconnect this wire from the logic board (pull up on the white connector).
- Now connect just the power adapter and try starting up; if successful, press/hold the power button until it shuts down. Remove the power adapter, reconnect the wire, then plug in the power adapter and try starting again. If no start, disconnect the PRAM batteries and leave disconnected until you get a replacement; the batteries have failed and probably have an internal short which is preventing startup. You can reassemble the 'book at this point and use the powerbook until you get a replacement battery. It will run fine without this battery.
- If the 'book will start with the PRAM batteries reconnected, reassemble the 'book and you should be OK.
After you lift off the keyboard, this is what you will see (enlarge bottom picture):
http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Mac/PowerBook-G3-Pismo/Keyboard-Page-1-Keyboard
If the main batteries have been left discharged for 6 years, they will be shot. The PRAM batteries can easily be replaced if needed; they are rechargeable but again, the discharged state may have killed them. You can test them after following these instructions:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=30580
You can find batteries at many vendors, but here is a very good company:
http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/batteries/
You can also run the latest version of OSX, 10.4.9, very nicely on this machine with additional memory and possibly a larger HD.

  • I bought a factory unlocked iphone 4s. it was working fine but when i upgraded it to iOS 5.1 it gave me "no sim" message. so when i tried to restore the iphone setting it is giving me now "ICCID: unknown" message please help. any ideas?

    i bought a factory unlocked iphone 4s. it was working fine but when i upgraded it to iOS 5.1 it gave me "no sim" message.
    so i tried then to restore the iphone using itunes but it got worse it is giving me now "ICCID: unknown" message please help. any ideas?

    Please define "factory unlocked". The term is basically meaningless. iPhones are sold either carrier locked or unlocked. Some carriers will unlock them after a period of time upon meeting certain requirements and paying a fee.
    There are lots of places that will "factory unlock" an iPhone. This basically translates to "hack". This can cause permanent damage to the phone. Best case scenario is these phones will re-lock to the original carrier on an update or restore. Worst case it they become expensive bricks.
    ICCID unknown indicates a critical failure. There is no way to resolve this other than taking it in to Apple and getting the phone replaced. It's very possible that the phone was hacked and attempting to update has now killed it.
    Where, EXACTLY, did you get this phone?

  • MB Dead now after flashing, please help!@

    Writing this on my old p1.
    I just flashed my Neo 2 865PE to 1.4 and now it wont boot!
    On my bracket on the back the top right one is red rest are green..
    What now? Am I screwed? Nothing but problems with this MSI board I tell you....
    Please help!

    Get 1.3 from the website if that's what your board came with originally. If it's not, get the one that came with your board. The reason I say that is that is, at least for me, the flashing program says there is a Bootblock Mismatch with all other bios' except what came with my motherboard.  ?(
    Make that backup disk and remane that bios file for your board to AMIBOOT.ROM. and have it in.
    Unplug your power. Take out your RAM. Clear the Cmos via the jumper, I believe it's JBAT1. Put your RAM back in. Then power up. Maybe have someone turn on the power while you hold down the Ctrl + Home Key. You really have to be fast. When you get your floppy, the board will read from it and restore your bios - then beep 4 times. It will then reboot. If you're lucky, all will be ok and you can go in and reset your settings in the Cmos.
    I want to make this suggestion to anyone who flashes their bios': Have that backup disk in while you flash. If the flash goes bad, when you hit the reset button, immediately the boot block will hunt for that AMIBOOT.ROM file. If you shut down your power with the power button, your system won't power back up. You will swear it's dead. You won't get it back until you unplug your power cord, clear your cmos, reset your RAM, power back on and IMMEDIATELY hold down the Ctrl + Home Key. I really don't know what is going wrong with these bios releases, but for some boards, they appear to kill the board. I'm convinced that I will never be able to use any other bios but 1.3. There is a glitch in the chip evidently. With the bios that came programmed on the chip, you can, seemingly, get your board back. At least, that's been true for me.
    Just keep trying. I believe you can get your board back. The boards are really nice but really finicky.

  • My iPod touch is.....bricked? dead? (??) PLEASE HELP!

    Hi. before you read this, know a few things: I am not computer-stupid. I am not one of those confused people who screams at their computer when it doesn't work. I'm impatiant, but this time I didn't know I screwed up until it was too late. Okay? let's move on.
    I have had my iPod touch 4th generation since my birthday last August. I use it for everything. Texting, emailing, working on stuff, digital art, listening to music, taking photos, watching TV....I use it more than most everything else. I jailbroke it last year, but restored and updated it to iOS 5 in late June. I lost most everything due to it being jailbroken and it couldn't truly sync, but that didn't matter to me. The jailbreak made my device slower anyway.
    Last night, I was syncing my iPod, and thinking it was done, I pulled it out of the cord. My mom was looking over my shoulder, and she said, "Hey--that wasn't done loading or whatever." I brushed it off, being in a bad anyway, and went to take a shower. After that, I went back on the computer to put a picture on my iPod from the desktop.
    It said it was in recovery mode and it would need to restore. I wasn't worried, since I'd thought I had synced it minutes earlier. No such luck, it was blank. Kept trying to restore and back up, over and over--nothing. My mom was like, "yeah I told you it wasn't done! Now its all screwed up!' and my dad had owned an iPod Classic that got the "red X of death" (look it up; its basically if you're iPod is "corrupted"), so he's kinda ticked but saw it coming, too.
    I decided to settle for having a blank iPod touch and just starting over, but that wouldn't work either: it won't put in music, apps, anything. It's just blank. I can't figure out the problem: is this what happens when iPOd touches are bricked? Or corrupted? It won't say.
    Beyond that, I'm going to go to the Apple store, but I'm worried they won't help me because my iPod used to be jailbroken. Is this a problem, or just an annoying irrealavent factor? I don't know.
    I use my iPod everyday and don't really want to buy a new one and start from scratch, but is that what I'm reduced to, options-wise? any help? Any suggestions? PLEASE AND THANK YOU!

    Try putting the iPod into DFU mode and restoring again:
    http://www.iclarified.com/entry/index.php?enid=1034
    If that still doesn't work, then the jailbreak may have cause a corruption which is now fatal; that's not uncommon with jailbroken devices. If that is indeed the case, your iPod may be irrecoverable and you'll be shopping for a new one.
    Good luck.

  • AT A DEAD END WITH FP please help!

    This is really a long story that I have been battling for 8 months or longer and now think I have made a bigger mess than before.....It started all in facebook when I was having problems playing one game Cafe World......everything was fine and and then it started saying plug in shockwave unresponsive....I want to say all this start not long after I done some long over due windows updates.....I have uninstalled all adobe's and tried to start over.....also removed google chrome and FF to the beginning......reinstalled the flash player and chrome and everything was ok but freezing and running very slow then it asked to install a plugin i did and then the shockwave unresponsive started again.  I only have the problem in that game on facebook.....at this time tho I feel I have made a bigger mess and I really need a starting point to start over......can someone please help me get this problem resolved....I have read and read for a solution so that not to be a bother but this is crazy!!!! I enjoy Chrome but I will remove it again if need be.
    OS Windows xp IE8 service pack 3
    not sure what all is needed...please just let me know I will find it
    I am not highly educated on computers.
    Thanks,
    Dawn

    Hi dd, I'm surprised you didn't ask for help from here much sooner. I could not deal with that for 8 months:-)
    Let's take a look and see where you are today. Go to C:\Windows\System32\Macromed\Flash  Right click on the Flash folder and post back all files listed there. The files NPSWF, you will need to right click on each one and then click Properties to obtain the version numbers. Post all of that back as I need the info.
    Then Using IE, go to Tools, Manage add ons(all add ons) and you should find this listed among the add ons:
    Shockwave Flash Object...ActiveX Control...Flash10e.ocx (vs 10.0.45.2) and be Enabled.
    Using FF find the plug-in SWF vs 10.0.45.2 and it must be Enabled.
    Thanks,

  • IPod now entirely dead....please help!

    My husband’s second generation IPod had a dead battery a couple months ago, so I gave him my IPod to used; he authorized his ITunes for the IPod, and used it with no problems. Now that his IPod is back, I have tried to sync my IPod (also second gen, 20G) with ITunes (I have a windows laptop), but its problems are getting more and more severe – to the point that it now won’t even turn on.
    When I first connected the IPod to my computer (using the firewire port, since that’s how this model connects), it asked if I wanted to authorize my IPod for my ITunes, and I said yes. It then copied about 60 (of 1400) songs, before declaring “Attempting to copy to the disk failed. An unknown error occurred (-69).” I tried syncing a few more times after this, but always with the same error.
    I then updated my ITunes software, but the problem persisted. I also tried resetting the Ipod, but that didn’t help. I also charged the battery overnight, so that it was fully charged…
    Next, I tried to update the IPod’s software. During the installation/update process, I received a disk write error. So I then tried to do a restore, again using the IPod software updater. Part of the way through the process, I got this error: “formatting failure, disk write error.”
    At this point, things got even worse. When I tried to turn on the ipod (either in the dock or not), it gave first the apple symbol, and then an icon that looks like a plug being put into a slot – I guess it was asking to be docked (even though it was already in the dock, and the dock was connected to my computer).
    So, I tried once again to reset the IPod; once I did this, though, the IPod went entirely dead. I can’t get it to do anything at all – it won’t turn on, and it doesn’t recognize the dock (and my computer doesn’t find it). I have tried two different docks and firewire adapters, both of which work for my husband – neither works for me. I also tried connecting to a different computer (and one that works fine for my husband), but no luck there either.
    I’ve had this IPod for nearly 3 years and have never had a problem with it…it hasn’t been used that much, maybe 100 hours total, but now I’m wondering if it’s just dead? Any suggestions appreciated.
    (By the way, I also just tried smacking it with the heel of my hand, but still no signs of life).
    Thanks!

    The "disk write error" you were getting indicate that
    the ports on your laptop are not providing the iPod
    with enough power. Now that your iPod's battery is
    dead, charge it with the wall adapter for 4 hours,
    then connect your iPod to a computer with high
    powered USB ports - a desktop computer would be best
    if you have access to one and then restore the iPod
    with the iPod updater.
    Thanks for the advice! It makes sense that it could be a power issue, and I could try it with my desktop at work (although my IPod doesn't have a direct USB cable; I"m guessing I'll need an adapter, like the Firewire adapter, but for USB?).
    Unfortunately, I think there may be a bigger problem: the IPod (which did have some charge in it this afternoon, since it was charged overnight and barely used since) is completely non-responsive. When I place it in the dock to charge, I get nothing (whereas normally the charging indicator displays), and I cannot turn it on (or reset it). So I suspect that placing it in the dock to charge won't do much good.
    Other ideas?

  • My ipod is DEAD!! someone please help?

    my iPod will not respond to anything- no matter what i do! I was listening to it one day (with full battery) and it just shut off for no reason and will NOT turn back on. I tried the whole resetting and restoring thing and nothing happens. Everything that has been suggested so far I have tried many times. My computer does not recognize anything iPod related when I plug it in through the USB either. My iPod is in perfect condition and is only a few months old...it has never been dropped or damaged in anyway so this should not be happening! Am I supposed to open it up somehow and replace the battery?? even though the battery is only 2 months old?? please help...

    First make sure the hold switch is not on, it sounds stupid, but it happens.
    Then make sure the battery is charged which you have.
    Then reset it which you have. And since that didnt work I would reccoment completely draining the battery. Rarely the ipod is in a state where the battery needs to be completely drained for a reset to work. Leave it disconnected from everything for about 24 hours. Then connect it back to the power adapter or computer and reset it. If it still doesnt work then try this...
    Make sure you have downloaded the latest version of iTunes (iTunes 7) if not go to apple.com, click on the ipod+itunes tab and you should see the download for itunes 7. Then you would need to update your ipod. Here's how for different systems.....
    How to update iPod for Windows using Windows XP or Windows 2000
    Download and install the latest version of iTunes. When you have the latest version, use the iTunes menus to check for updates. On Windows choose Help > Check for Updates.
    Connect your iPod to your computer using the USB or FireWire cable that came with your iPod and open iTunes if it is not already open.
    In order to be updated on a PC, your iPod must be formatted for a PC. If it is not, you will receive a message stating that your iPod needs to be reformatted. If you receive this message, please read the this article before proceding. If you are unsure of your iPod's format, read this article.
    If iTunes detects that a newer version of iPod software is available for your model, you will be prompted to download and install the new version. If the newest software has already been downloaded you may be prompted to install it.
    Depending on the model iPod you have and whether you are using a USB or FireWire connection to connect your iPod, you may be asked to leave you iPod attached to the computer for the update to complete or you may be asked to connect the iPod to the iPod Power Adapter that came with your iPod (Note: not all iPod models ship with a power adapter). Be sure to follow the onscreen instructions to complete the update.
    During the update process, you will notice an Apple logo and progress bar appear on the iPod display (Note: this may be difficult to see since the iPod's backlight will be turned off). Once this is completed, you can resume normal use of your iPod. If you notice a different icon on the iPod screen read this article and the follow the related instructions.
    How to update iPod for Macintosh
    Download and install the latest version of iTunes. When you have the latest version, use the iTunes menus to check for updates. On the Mac choose File > Check for Updates.
    Connect your iPod to your Mac using the USB or FireWire cable that came with your iPod and open iTunes if it is not already open.
    In order to be updated on a Mac, your iPod must be formatted for a Mac. If it is not, you will not be able to update your iPod, only restore. In this case, please read the this article before proceding. If you are unsure of your iPod's format, read this article.
    If iTunes detects that a newer version of iPod software is available for your model, you will be prompted to download and install the new version. If the newest software has already been downloaded you may be prompted to install it.
    Depending on the model iPod you have and whether you are using a USB or FireWire port to connect your iPod, you may be asked to leave you iPod attached to the computer for the update to complete or you may be asked to connect the iPod to the iPod Power Adapter that came with your iPod. Be sure to follow the onscreen instructions to complete the update (Note: not all iPod models come with an iPod Power Adapter).
    If that still didnt work make sure the iPod is the only device in the USB chain and then try to turn it on....
    Then make sure you are using the USB cable that came with the ipod and check that it is in good condition.
    Then try another computer and plug the ipod directly to the built in port.
    If not your ipod WILL need to be sent in for repair.

  • My ipod (5th generation) is dead!!! please help!

    I got my lovely ipod 30gb on dec 2005, so far so good until a month ago when the battery was completely discharged and when i tried to charge it through my computer (mac) as i usually do, it did not work this time. It came on screen a logo i says "do not disconnect", i waited but never turn on. I tried to reset it and a briefly apple logo (but keeps off) came out and then briefly turn on only to show a logo with the address to : www.apple.com/support/ipod. I have tried everything as it is recommended but still nothing; i reset, re-start, plugged it and so forth. Also, last two trial to connected to the comp, it was not recognized. When i open "itunes" the ipod logo doesn't appears on it anymore.
    Please help me if you have experience something like that!

    Try the remaining items of:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode
    How to put iPod touch / iPhone into DFU mode « Karthik's scribblings
    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try another cable
    - Try on another computer
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

    I pushed the home and start buttom to do a full restart and nothing happend; so I plugged it into the electricity plug and nothing seemed to happend too!!!
    Please help me!!! I need my iphone to be working....
    Thank you in advance for your help

    PS I´m from Mexico so please do no pay so much attention to my writting.

    When this happens, and it happens to me every so often, plug it into the wall, then hold the top button and the Home button in at the same time for sometimes up to 30 seconds. Eventually it will come back on and charge normally. No idea why it does this.

    Ebay is not an official reseller.  Return it if you can for a refund.
    Basic troubleshooting from the Users Guide is reset, restart, restore (first from backup then as new).  Try each of these in order until the issue is resolved.

  • JNDI Error Please help any one..Urgent

    Hi
    I'm new to Websphere. I deployed a session bean in Websphere. I have written a client program too. Client is unable to connect to the server.
    Is there any particular sequence of steps which we should folllow so that the client program can connect to server successfully. If anybody knows those steps please help me.
    I'm pasting the Client code below.
    thanx
    Ramu
    package naveen;
    import java.io.*;
    import java.util.*;
    import javax.naming.*;
    public class HelloClient{
    public static void main(String a[]) throws Exception{
    System.out.println("Hello Client Main Method Called...");
    Hashtable h=new Hashtable();
    h.put(Context.PROVIDER_URL,"iiop:///");
    h.put(Context.INITIAL_CONTEXT_FACTORY,"com.ibm.websphere.naming.WsnInitialContextFactory");
    System.out.println("Hello Client before context intialization...");
    Context ctxt=new InitialContext(h);
    System.out.println("Hello Client after context initialization...");
    Object o=ctxt.lookup("HelloJndi");
    HelloHome hh=(HelloHome)o;
    HelloRemote hr=hh.create();
    System.out.println(hr.sayHello());
    This program's output is it's printing "Before context intialization"
    After that error message
    I am giving that error message also:
