Powerbook G3  Tiger startup in BASH?????

My PB G3 with Tiger has suddenly started up in BASH and I have no clue how to get back to Tiger. Can someone help please?
Many thanks,
David

If OS 9 is functioning that sounds promising as on OS X software problem.
Before you reinstall Tiger, have you tried running Disk Repair on the HD to re-establish the file catalogue? It may be quicker than doing an Archive and Install.
You may be familiar with this process, but just to save time, I'll post it anyway in case you are not.
Repairing Disk from install volume
Insert the Tiger Install Disk 1 into the drive and then select Restart; when you hear the chime hold down C key until the apple logo appears.
This will take you to the installation software, but you do not want to install.
Select your language, then go up to the top menu bar to Utilities and navigate to the Disk Utilities application.
Select the start up drive, then follow the instructions in the First Aid pane where you can click on Repair Disk.
If it finds errors, repeat the process until it reports no errors.
After these repairs, quit the application, and restart normally.
Once restarted normally run Repair Permissions. from the Disk Utility application found on your hard drive in Application/Utilities.
Finally, how much space do you have spare on your HD? It is recommended that you need 10 - 15% of total HD to be spare capacity so to avoid problems. If your HD exceeds this then cart some data off it on to CD's for example.

  • Can't create a Tiger startup disk on an external drive

After backing up the applications and data files to DVD’s I installed Leopard on my Power Book PPC G4. Everything went without a hitch. Now I would like to create a Tiger startup disk on a USB drive. When I try to format the USB drive with the OS 10.4 disk that came with the laptop I get a message that says “Unable to find system 10.3 or later” just prior to the step that lets you pick the drive you wish to format. I would like to be able to startup in system 10.4 so I can run an older version of 4th Dimension in the Classic mode. Is there a way to accomplish this now that I have already successfully installed Leopard?

I quickly scanned your profile before posting the link to that KB article, and could have sworn that I saw an Intel-based Mac there... In any case, many people have successfully booted OS X from USB drives on PPC Macs. It's certainly not as good or reliable as using a FireWire drive, but you can read various reports about it here and by Googling something like +PPC Mac boot USB+. You'll come up with a lot of information, so I don't understand other posters denying it can be done...
    Good luck.

  • Migrating mail from Powerbook G4 (Tiger) to iMac (Snow Leopard)

Hello. I'm new to the forum and not tech savvy, so hope that you'll bear with me.
I've recently installed Snow Leopard on my iMac and now wish to transfer all the e-mail on my old Powerbook G4 (Tiger) to the iMac.
Any pointers on how I should go about this would be much appreciated.

  • How to migrate PowerBook G4 Tiger to new MacBook Pro 15" Lion via ethernet cable? Migration Assistant to old to update, apparently.

How to migrate PowerBook G4 Tiger to new MacBook Pro 15" Lion via ethernet cable? Migration Assistant to old to update, apparently.

Ah, a Powerbook. I miss that.  Anyways, I believe that the Powerbook G4 has an Firewire 400/800 port.  Why don't you do that?  It's fast, and you don't have to set up one of those funky reverse wire ethernet cables.  I wouldn't use Migration Assistant, but that's just me.  Too many issues.  I'd start up your brand new MacBook Pro and during the setup assistant, it'll ask you to transfer data from an older Mac.  Using firewire with a Target Disk Mode, it's pretty fast.
If you have already opened up your new Mac and are using it, then use Migration assistant, but also with the Firewire (preferably 800).

  • Powerbook freezes on startup.

Hi, I'm new to apple computers. I bought this a estate sale and I was trying to clean old users info off, and I did an upgrade to one of the programs, and it said to reboot, so I did. Now it come up with blue screen saying Starting Mac OS X and stays there. Any help is appreciated.

    Welcome!
Did you get any gray system install/restore disks with the computer. These are very necessary for repair and maintenance. If you did not get them, you'll have to get a full retail install disk set to be able to replace most of the functions of the gray system.
Any 17" PowerBook can run Tiger (Mac OS 10.4) or Leopard (10.5). Older ones (slower than 1.67mHz will probably run better with Tiger.
You show it currently has Mac OS 10.2. That version still felt very "beta" and has some problem outside of the fact that it's hard to find a decent browser that still works under that older system. One that can cause startup issues is the "invalid key length" error. 10.2 tend to throw these out with some regularity and the only sure cure is an Archive & Install of the OS. Then it sometimes comes back sometime down the road.
For now, try starting the computer while holding the SHIFT key down. Keep holding until you get a message about "Safe Mode" or "Safe Boot," or you get a stable desktop. That does some directory checking. If you get a stable desktop, don't try using the computer (a bunch of important extensions are disabled by this type of boot). Simply do a normal restart and see if everything comes up.

  • PowerBook G3 (PDQ) - Startup disk and PCMCIA slot problem

    Hello
I have encountered a problem with my powerbook G3 (PDQ model)
Once when I had to configure my microphone, I saw that there was "Zoomed video" present in the list of audio inputs.
I thought this was a glitch, and inserted my SD card reader into the lower PCMCIA slot. Then my display got messed up.
The slot insertion doesn't seem to work right too, it resists much more than the top slot does.
It didn't react to anything except Fn-Shift-Ctrl-Power, which is Reset.
It happens in both OS9 and 10.2.
    Photo: http://instagr.am/p/NtWNH/
Once I was able to insert it right so it wouldn't mess up, and i used the reader in the lower slot as usual.
When I ejected it, the card didn't pop out as usual and it was hard to pull out, and the screen was messed up as well.
The second problem is that when I start the "Startup Disk" control panel in OS9, the PowerBook hangs for no particular reason, also reacting to Reset only.
Maybe there is a bootloader I can install so I'd choose the OS I want before actually booting anything?
Could these problems be related to each other, or a dead battery? Maybe to the incorrectly set clock (however doesn't seem so)? Or related to using an Apple DVD drive?
    Thanks,
    ~ Vladislav Korotnev

No it hasn't. What kind of battery does it use?
The power battery is dead as well (not charging nor powering the pb)

  • Apple G4 PowerBook Aluminium m880 startup intermittent.

Hi all, I have an old PowerBook with no battery installed. It has been fine up until last week when it would not respond to the power button. Last night it powered up, but shut down after 15 mins. When I say shut down, it was like pulling the power cord out, so total power failure.  It would not start back up after this. Today i tried it and it powered up again. It says the date is set before march 24, 2001 etc. I have tried my iBook adapter on it too, no difference.
Is this an internal battery thing? I took the back off the computer to see if I could see the pram battery, but could not.
Any help would be greatly welcomed.
    Best wishes, Tom.

    Hi Thomas.
I think we need to figure out your exact model of PowerBook, as people here are having to guess around the various models. We know you have a 15-inch but I can't get "m880" to return a vaild model number. It might help to know the version fo teh Mac OS your are running.
Get the computer running and then select "About this Mac" from the Apple menu.  In the resulting window, click the "More Info..." button to auto-launch System Profiler.
The first Profiler screen has a precise identfier code as the second line of data. Depending on the OS, this line starts with "Machine Model" or "Model Identifier." The entry will start with PowerBook" folowed by a pair of numbers separated by a comma/ Example: my 17-inch 1Ghz PowerBook returns a Machine Model (in Tiger) of "PowerBook5,1"
Find this code and post it for us and we can be much more specific in recommendations. DO NOT post the computer serial number that appears on the same screen.
Replacing the PRAM battery is not an easy task unless you are familiar with notebook computer innards and the associtaed tiny and easily-broken parts. It behoove you to get through this without having to repalce the PRAM battery.
My internal battery is shot but many of the problems I had went away when I got a new main battery. Mine wil not start on AC power alone, or if the battery is run down. It will, however, start after a couple of minutes with a drained battery as long as it's plugged into wall power.
It is possible to breath a little life into a flat PRAM bater by leaving the computer off with the main battery removed for 24-48 hours.
Still I think you need to consider a new main battery of you plan to continue  using the computer. Apple stopped selling PowerBook batteries this year so you're looking for a third-party solution. Don't know what the resources for those items are in the UK.

  • WebServer Hangs?  Or can't find on browser ...  PowerBook (PowerPC) Tiger

I have a PowerBook (PowerPC) and Tiger OS X. Recently developed tons of HTML but I can't seem to view in on a WebServer because it will not turn on. If I go to Systems -> Sharing, and try to turn on Web Services, that check box goes gray and it just says "starting." That's it. I tried re-installing Apache. I tried reading all the conf files but I can't figure it out.
I tried updating the Apache version, tried installing a newer package with the PHP, mySQL though it already comes with the older version but I think I made a mess of it. Really could need some assistance, please!!!

Just to add on to what Camelot said, usually Apache isn't really hanging when you start it with System Preferences. The System Preferences pane is waiting for Apache to signal that it's finished starting up, but what's really happened is that the Apache binary has crashed or exited with a configuration error, and the System Pref pane never gets the message. That's why it appears to hang, but if you close and open Sys Prefs, you'll see that it's no longer waiting to start.
Apache logs its errors in /var/log/httpd/error_log, and it's usually very helpful about telling you what happened. There are also helpful command line programs to get you information on why Apache won't start up. You can check your configuration like so:
    <pre class="command">/usr/sbin/apachectl configtest</pre>
You can start the server like so:
    <pre class="command">sudo /usr/sbin/apachectl start</pre>
Substitute stop for start to stop sharing, and use graceful instead of stop if all you want to do is to restart the server to make some configuration changes. graceful won't make your server unavailable like stopping and starting will.
These hints, though, all apply to the Apache 1.3 that's shipped with 10.4, and may not apply if you've replaced the stock Apache and PHP and other stuff...

  • Old Powerbook running Tiger can't connect to Fios

I have an old Powerbook G4 (titanium, 1 Ghz) with an 802.11b airport card, firmware v 9.52. I am running Tiger (OS X 10.4.11) with all software updates applied. Until a few weeks ago, I was using Charter Communications for my ISP and an Airport Extreme. I connected the Powerbook to the network using WPA security and had no problems.
Then I switched to Fios and am using their router. I have configured it the same way as the Airport Extreme, but keep getting an error message saying that I'm using the incorrect password. I've looked through this forum and done everything others have suggested including making sure that I'm using TKIS, but no luck.
    Any suggestions?

I am having exactly the same trouble.
Email through another network, (say, my home or work wifi) works correctly and I can send and receive messages.
However email when using the T-Mobile wireless network does not connect.
This is obviously not an activation issue.  My account is not deactivated if I can send and receive messages using another network, so using the pin activation page is not the appropriate fix for this problem.

  • I/O error - Powerbook hangs at startup

My co-worker brought his powerbook G4 in to work today, said it wasnt booting up. When we tried it would hang on the spinning gear screen. The message we got when we booted into verbose mode was the I/O error.
We tried to run an Archive and Install with the original 10.3.3 disks that came with the machine but it complains the disk is corrupt (dont know if it means the hdd or the cd). When running disk utility from the disk it cant repair the permissions or the disk.
I'm officially out of ideas. We need to keep the files already on the hard drive - photos, etc. Any advice is appreciated...

My suggestion is that you startup your PowerBook in "Target Disk Mode" (hold down the "T" key on startup while connected to another Mac via FireWire), backup all your files to that Mac, or another external drive, and then...
    1) Startup your PowerBook after all the backing up, with the restore disc
    2) Completely erase and reformat your drive
    3) After that's done, check the status of your drive
    4) Since it's erased, you can't archive and install
    5) Do a complete fresh install of the OS / Software
    6) Restart, and see if that cleared it up
By the way, when you say "disk is corrupt" I can't tell you if that's your HD or the installation disc unless I saw the screen myself.

  • Cannot find destination drive - Powerbook G4, Tiger

Hello... oddball problem here I think.
My powerbook is about 4 years old now. Was running fine on Sunday, Monday when I tried to start it up I got the "broken folder" icon. i.e. Kernel Panic as far as I can tell.
    I've:
    -Reset PRAM
-did extended hardware test (no issues)
-repaired and verified the disk (via TDM)
-did a 7pass '0 out' erase of OS partiton (via TDM)
-did a quick erase and rename of OS partition (via TDM)
-repaired and verified the disk (again) (via TDM)
I can access the HD via firewire in TDM, can transfer data off it no problem. When trying to use Disk Utility from the OS startup disk, it freezes up. When trying to reinstall the OS it cannot find a destination disk..
so.. Is the HD dead? or am I missing something?

Well, maybe you did have a KP which may be hardware related. I take it the gray disc is the one that came with the computer originally? I am not that familiar with your model computer but the disc probably had a hardware test utility on it that can be accessed by holding down the D key while booting. Check the hardware.
There's a list of other things that can be tried such as resetting PRAM (can't see how that would necessarily help here, but it can't hurt) and PMU.
In one sentence you said it freezes on booting, but then you also said it froze while using disk utility which suggests it did indeed boot to the disc, so I'm a bit unclear as to the exact status.

  • Powerbook G4 Tiger weird Brightness problem

    Hi,
my mum was using this powerbook g4 with mac os x tiger on it, then she closes the lid and it goes into standby. then i unplug the cable to bring it to my friend's house, put it on the desk, connect the power cord, open the lid and the screen turn on. Everything normal until here. i closa the lid to a 45 degree angles and the screen goes off. Then i realize that it wasn't off, but the brightness is set to minimum (that level you can't see anything) so i have to use a flashlight and point it on the screen to reboot it. I shut it down, removed the battery, but nothing.
    What could it be? Thanks

Look at this similar post. https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2734782?tstart=0
It's a longshot but try this. (You'll have to use your flashlight.)
Some of the display settings are stored in NVRAM.
    Try a PRAM/NVRAM reset. http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1379
    Another way to reset NVRAM.
Restart your mac & immediately depress the Command+Option+O+F keys which will display the Open Firmware screen. Then type the following:
reset-nvram Then press the Return key & type:
set-defaults  Then press the Return key & type:
reset-all Then press the Return key & your Mac will reboot.

  • Powerbook G4 17" startup problem

    Hello All,
I purchased a laptop 9 months ago and am having problems with the startup recently. The laptop is not starting up immediately and I have to force the power shut-down several (3,4) times before the laptop responds and starts-up.
Does anyone know what could be done? I have tripled checked that the correct startup disk is highlighted in the system preferences...
    thank you

Forced shutdowns can cause directory corruption on your hard drive.
Try using Disk Utility to repair your startup disk (hard drive) as shown in Dr.Smokes Resolving Disk, Permission, and Cache Corruption.
This may help your issue but is needed even if it doesn't.
If you still have trouble after that, take in in for service. If I had a laptop I would purchase Apple Care also. Too many things can go wrong with all the bouncing around they experiance. You can still purchase it now (till the last day of the 1 year warranty).
    Cheers!

  • Powerbook fails to startup after Safari, Java, QT Updates

I have a 15" Powerbook G4 with OS X.4.2 and just ran software update, while connected to the power supply - it is not running on battery power. After installing the QuickTime, Java, and Safari updates (it has been away from a network for a while) I got the click Restart screen. After clicking Restart the computer shutdown. I hit the power button, heard the hard drive spin up for a few seconds, then a little squeak, silence, then nothing. I tried to power up with option-command-p-r thinking maybe I could reset the PRAM. Same result. I powered on and inserted my OS X.4 DVD (mistake here) and held down the C key. No change, but now the DVD is stuck in the Superdrive. I then tried the ctrl-command-power button until I heard the long tone, released the keys, then nothing. I've also tried removing and swapping the RAM. I should also mention that I get no power light on the front of the powerbook. If I hold down the power button for five seconds I get the long tone and rapidly flashing power light, then the HD stops and silence. I'm guessing the machine is dead. Everything I have read in my Apple Service Technician course manuals says that this is a sign of logic board failure. (At least I have AppleCare).
Anyone have any ideas? I also installed the updates on a G5 and now it has been freezing up at various points and the only way to fix is hold the power-button for 5 seconds and then force a shutdown and restart.
Any help is appreciated, as I found nothing like this on the Apple discussions or tech info. All those issues report at least making it to a gray screen, mine stays black the whole time.

hello, I'm having the same problem w/ my PB, i did an update too isight, which i dont use, but just to keep the automatic update in silence! lol, well I'm waiting for some help too, but if u have a CD stock inside try this, press F12 (eject) right after pressing the power button, i hope this give u a little help

  • I have a G4 Powerbook with Tiger OS, is there a version of Firefox that I can install and get the benefits of using it.

My computer is a Powerbook G4 is there a version of Firefox Software that will work?

Assuming the battery is not working, I know of no other way to access the data without ripping open the PowerBook. Third-party adaptors are still available and the price is much less than Apple used to charge:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/NewerTech/APLPBI65W/
The other option is, as I hinted above, to open up the PowerBook and extract the hard drive. Once out of the powerbook you use a device like this:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/NewerTech/U3NVSPATA/
It allows you to attach the bare drive from the PB to a USB port on teh MacBook Pro. The drive will appear on the MBPs desktop just as if it were and external drive in an enclosure.
