Powerbook G3 Woes - PDQ 266 - Installation Headaches...

Hello people.
I have just acquired a PB G3 "PDQ" which has a 20GB HDD along with 512MB of RAM, Model M5473.
I cannot install an OS on it to save myself and I'm pulling my hair out.
I've reset the machine with the key combo stated at the rear, along with also PRAM and PMU using the key combos. I've also tried several tried and tested versions (on New World machines at least) of Mac OS 8 and 9 that I have, without success.
The ones I've tried:
- An original 'standalone' 9.2.2 installer that I can boot from, partition up the 20GB HDD into 4, then start the installation, only to get a a read error with 'the system extras folder'. (I've seen conflicting reports of what this machine can actually be upgraded to, perhaps it's 9.1 only?)
- I have a 'standalone' Mac OS8 original plain white CD that reports at boot something to the effect of 'you can use this, wrong version' and prompts to restart.
- Does this machine have a battery?
- How do you turn it off from the grey-question-mark-in-the-box screen?
- Does the OS9 (white-background orange 9) work with this machine?
- Do I need the original 8.1 disc that came with the machine?
Lost, dazed and quite confused...
Cheers,
R.

Reyne,
Nice work!
Just to answer your earlier questions...
-The Powerbook G3 Series "Wallstreet" M4753 requires a minimum of MacOS 8.1; this 8.1 is a special version that includes a Powerbook G3 System Enabler file, so a retail MacOS 8.1 CD will not work.
-Your MacOS 9 CD (white background, orange '9') is a retail disk and should work just fine on any Mac that supports that version.
-Your Wallstreet does have main battery; look for "Powerbook G3 - User Manual".

-When installing OSX on the Wallstreet, you need to partition the HD in a specific way:

  • Powerbook G3 series II 266 Wifi???

    Hi can you help me?
Ok I've been thinking that instead of treating myself to a lovely new ibook, I should see if I could upgrade my ancient G3 Powerbook first
I literally just want to use my wifi broadband at home i the UK, on a Sky broadband router, I pretty much guess it will be useless for anything else (ie Abobe Creative Suite 3) I just want to be able to surf the net while my boyf is hogging my imac
I'm not techie at all so please give me a dummies guide!
My Powerbook is a 266mhz version of the following that has been upgraded to 192mb ram
PowerBook G3/266 Series II (August 1998)
    CPU: PowerPC 750 (G3) 266 MHz
    1 MB Level 2 cache
    66 MHz system bus
    Standard RAM: 64 MB
    14.1" 1024 x 768 active-matrix STN color display
    built-in 56k fax modem
    S-video out
    20x CD-ROM drive (DVD-ROM optional)
    floppy drive optional
    4 GB hard drive
    supports SCSI Disk Mode
    4 MB SDRAM
I have a pc card that was a USB converter so I could connect my zip drive
If you can advise me whether it can be done and a step by step guide to what I need to do I would be so grateful!

    punkypickle,
Jan Hedlund over on the other forum gave you a good link for a step by step guide to wireless on older powerbooks. I might suggest this: First connect your Wallstreet (PDQ) to the router via Ethernet and see if you can surf the Net as you wish. You are probably running MacOS 8.6 since that is the minimum required for a USB PC card. The problem with OSes earlier than 10.x running on the Net is the browser; few browsers are available for pre-OSX (aka Classic) systems that can handle today's web pages. You can try Internet Explorer already installed in your system but even the last IE Classic-compatible version can't even load most Apple pages.
There are a few browsers still being updated for Classic. I would give this one a try:
    iCab 3.0.5
    (Classic) Mac OS 8.5 - 9.2.2
    (PPC, G3, G4, G5) English
    http://www.icab.de/dl.php
You of course could install Jaguar/10.2, freely update to 10.2.8, then use a more modern browser. However, you would have to add more RAM but you could get by with the 4GB HD (I first ran 10.2 on my Wallstreet with a 2GB HD, but this was only for browsing).

  • Can't erase hard drive on my PowerBook G4 when using the Installer CD

    Hi,
I am trying to erase the hard drive on my old Powerbook G4 so that I can donate it.  I followed the instructions by booting up the laptop using the Installer CD.  Every time I select my hard drive in the Erase window and click the Erase button, it just checks the volumes and then it dims and nothing else happens.
After multiple failed attempts to erase the HD, I decided to quit the install CD and simply remove the HD altogether.  I pressed the "Option" key in order to avoid starting up from the CD, but it is not working.  I am unable to return to my original settings.  All I see now is an arrow on the right hand side of the blue screen and a circle with an arrow on the left side.  Pressing the arrow does not result in anything.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks!

    Thanks for responding.
Yes, I tried everything yesterday.  It only allowed me to verify the disk and not do any repairs.  This computer has some major issues so I am not surprised. Since it was destined for recycling anyway, I decided not to waste any more time on it, so I removed the hard disk instead and am about to ship it off.

  • PowerBook G3 Wallstreet/PDQ battery pinout

I recently got a nice 266Mhz PDQ off of ebay for $150 USD but it did not come with a battery (though it did come with a Duo power adapter :P ), and because I am unwilling to pay $100-$150 for a battery I was thinking that I might be able to rig up a battery pack or two of my own and strap 'em to the outside of the case with just the wires running to the battery terminals so I could use both of my expansion bays for drives.
Now, problem is, I don't have a dead battery to disembowel and I also don't have any info on the pinout of the connector. I have done quite a bit of searching for the pinout info but I can't seem to find it.
Do any of you know where I might be able to find the pinout or a dead battery?

Thanks Niel. So, you are saying that I will be able to boot in Classic while in OS 10.2 and no partition is neccesary? Sorry, I feel kind of dumb about this. I was imagining if I installed OS X over OS 9 it would just eliminate OS 9. I'm not familiar with swithching to Classic.

  • Installation headache

I am trying to install J2SE development kit with netbeans and i keep getting the same problem.
A box comes up which says:
    "failure setting file's time/date stamp"
I click okay and it seems to continue but I cannot then open netbeans when the install is completed. I'm a newbie to the whole programming world and am learning java at college. But this is really slowing me down as i can only practice coding at college.

Did you download the right file for your OS?
I would suggest you download the JDK seperatly from Netbeans and get that installed and running correctly. I.E. being able to run javac from any command prompt.
Then download the Netbeans 5.5 and installl it. The installer should find the JDK on your machine.
The problem sounds like a corrupted install or probably a bad downloaded file.
So, uninstall everything and start fresh.
After uninstalling Netbeans, there is a folder named .netbeans under your c:\Documents and Settings\<your user name>\ folder, delete the .netbeans folder.
    Hope this helps,
    JJ

  • Powerbook livebox woes

After setting up my Orange livebox using the wonderful Bramley Apple tutorial on my Macbook pro I'm now unable to get my old G4 Powerbook to connect. The livebox is set to work with just the WEP address and even if I press the "1" button to turn it into pairing mode I have no luck. The best I can get is it telling me that the G4 needs to be added to the "Access Control List" but there's no tab for this in the Livebox config! Someone help me please!

  • [SOLVED] Post installation headaches

I've finally gotten machine back up again but I have two major issues I just can't fix. First one is that I have no sound. I tried to run alsaconf but it doesn't find anything. My card is an onboard soundcard using the snd-hda-intel driver. I have the it listed under modules in rc.conf but still no sound. Second problem is my wired network connection. It doesn't work anymore. It uses the r8169 driver but when KDE loads eth0 is nowhere to be found and r8169 is loaded in the modules section of rc.conf. I have to manually modprobe it after login in order to get my network going. The list is:
    MODULES=(!b43 !ssb lib80211 lib80211_crypt_tkip wl mii r8169 pcspkr snd_seq_oss snd_pcm_oss snd_mixer_oss snd-seq-device snd-hwdep snd-page-alloc snd-pcm snd-rawmidi snd-timer snd snd-hda-codec snd-hda-intel soundcore snd-usb-audio snd-usbmidi-lib fuse)

hal is not needed for anything this days. on the modules array the ! option is deprecated so check the news on the main page. For the rest, without more info i don't think we are able to help.

  • Powerbook won't shutdown after installation of OS 10.4.11

What is the fix for this? So far, I have:
    Repaired permissions
Booted in single user mode and run fsck
Rebuilt the directory with Disk Warrior
    Disabled Dashboard
    Reset the PRAM
Installed and run Applejack in AUTO mode
Plenty of disk space - that isn't the problem. Interestingly, Applejack couldn't restart the computer either. The error was "Failed to load DeleteTrap.kext".
The only way to shutdown the computer is to hold down the power button until it turns off. This is really bugging me! Any help is appreciated.

Hi allisonm, and a warm welcome to the forums!
Have you done a PRAM reset...

Tried resetting the PMU for PB/iB?

I'd also find that file, see if it's locked or what, maybe move it to the desktop for a test too.

  • Adobe AIR Installer -  Hybrid - fails to launch on MAC

We have an AIR application to be delivered as a hybrid DVD
The AIR is deployed as a bundled runtime installer.
The issue is after burning the DVD as a hybrid, the Adobe AIR Installer does not launch.
We are using toast to burn the hybrid DVD
Has anybody encountered a aimilar issue
    sks

I've tried using the Leopard Disk Utility to burn a CD-R from a .dmg and a .cdr (using various options like compressed, read only ,etc.) based on the same directory that the USB installers are copied from (USB installers of AIR app + Sidecar works on Windows/Mac and Linux after installing AIR separately).  I can't get those disks read on a Vista or an XP (SP 3) machine.  Nothing comes up in the CD/DVD drive.  If I use wodim in Ubuntu Linux (installed on a partition on a G4 Powerbook, old, I know) the installer CD works on Mac but it's not readable on WinXp or Vista.
I've also tried to copy the .cdr created on a Mac and rename it to .iso, moved it over to a Windows machine and tried burning it with 2 different software (will try Nero next) and it fails to write from the mac-originated .iso.  Windows always seems to butcher the Mac-based installer .app files because it thinks they are folders so I have been unable to create a Data CD directly from the file structure on Windows.
I'd love a bullet-proof way to burn a CD that would work on Windows and Mac (and Linux would be a plus).
    Thanks,
    Jason

  • Installation Solution

I downloaded iTunes 6 today and had the same installation headaches as everyone else. I tried installing with WinRar, I tried downloading the Quicktime standalone, I tried everything. I kept getting error code -3 and then error code 1402. Finally, this worked:
1)Download the iTunes 6 Setup. Run it and ignore any error messages during the QT install.
    2)Download the Quicktime standalone installer.
3)Go to http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93865 and follow the instructions under "Step 3."
    4)Run the QT standalone installer.
    5)iTunes should work.
    Hope that helps!
    -aridneptune

You'll need the standalone installer to install QT by itself.

  • Powerbook 12" and leopard

Can some one please clarify if i can put leopard on a powerbook 12" 1.33ghz and 1.25 ram. I have seen that the specs say yes but reading thru threads a lot of people seem to have problems. I currently backed up all data and have done a re-install of panther( which looks stone age!) so i have nothing on the HD at the moment so a clean slate. thanks

Yes, your PB should run Leopard comfortably, assuming your RAM is of good quality. Borderline or unsuitable RAM is the most common cause of trouble in Powerbooks following major OS upgrade installations. You can eliminate most of the other possible pitfalls by reformatting the hard drive before installing Leopard. Don't use the "Upgrade Install" option, i.e., installing over an already-installed Panther.

  • Kernel Panic for a powerbook driver, but i have an ibook...

I was having trouble with my Finder in 10.2.8 so I was told to get a 10.3 disc to do the Archive and Install feature. I got a hold of the discs and went to do the install and a Kernel Panic popped up. Here's a copy of it:
Panic(cpu 0): Unable to find driver for this platform: “Powerbook2,1”.
    Latest stack backtrace ro cpu0:

I went to Dr. Smoke's website and figured out that it's a problem with the System folder. My questions are: a) does this have anything to do with my finder problem in 10.2.8? and b) why does the powerbook divers matter if I have an ibook clamshell?

    Mike--
Sounds to me like you got hold of 10.3 discs for a specific PowerBook, not the a universal installer, or the 10.3 discs for your particular iBook.
As a general rule here's how it goes: you can't use the installation/restore discs that came with a particular Macintosh with another model Macintosh. It doesn't have all the drivers. For example, a PowerBooks' disc would have different drivers for fans, etc., than would the disc for an iMac G5. However, if you can find Panther retail discs, then you'd be fine, as the retail versions would have the proper drivers for all compatible Macintoshes that were released before it.
As to why it says "Powerbook2,1", at that low of a level, the kernel sees portables as Powerbooks. They use the same logic more or less on the desktop Macs, where the iMacs and Power Macs are both "PowerMacN,N" with the Ns distinguishing between models. The Rev. A iMac G5 is PowerMac8,1.
This isn't necessarily so, by the way, for the Intel Macs, where so far the strings are a bit more specific...

  • Solution on sticky powerbook?!?!

    Hi,
My powerbook has been giving me some headaches recently with black screens of death, stopping for no reason, kernal trap errors etc.etc. and this I'm sure ties-in with the problems I have been having with the memory modules...
Anyhow, a colleague of mine suggested that the memory may be touching the back of the memory cover and shorting out?! and suggested perhaps cutting a small rectangle of anti-static bag and placing on the memory before I put the cover back on?
Oh well, thought I would give this a try and hey, it's kinda working. My powerbook hasn't stopped yet and it would normally after being on all day. It's 10.40pm GMT and all OK.
One quick question though, is this going to be OK? I'm not going to build-up a charge on the memory module doing this?!?
Would be interested to hear what other people think...
    Thanks!
    Powerbook G4   Mac OS X (10.4)

OK, ignore this. My powerbook decided to crash twice last night soon after it booted-up.
    Repair I think!

  • Choosing locale using Adobe AIR installer

    Hello All,
I would like to choose the UI language of my AIR application during the installation proccess of the application itself.
For instance one of the questions during the installation process should the user in which language the he would like to install the application? And then to localize the application according to the users choise.
Is it possible to reconfigure the AIR launcher in such a way the above will be possible?
I couldn't find relevant material in the net...
    Thanks in advance ,
    Felix.

  • Mac os 9 CD (french) for powerbook

    Hi.
I would like to know if i can order a os 9 CD in french for my powerbook g4 12 inches.
There was no os 9 CD include with the computer, and I really need it to run my old bill software.
Can we order it at Apple Store? I can't find it.
    Thanks.
    Jielle

Hi, jielle. The reason no OS 9 CD was included with your Powerbook is that it would be completely useless to you. An OS 9 installer disk will only work on a computer that can start up in OS 9. Yours can't. However, one of the Install or Restore disks that was shipped with your Powerbook contains an OS 9 installer that will provide for Classic operation within OS X. (You'll have to figure out which one.) If your bill software is compatible with Classic mode, running that installer will enable you to use it. If the software can't run in Classic mode, you won't be able to use it at all on the Powerbook.
