PowerBook G4 12" Damaged by Bad Battery?

I have a PowerBook G4 12" 1.5GHz with a bad battery that is about to be replaced by the Extension Program. Can the bad battery have damaged the computer while it was in use in the computer? In early 2005, I purchased a brand-new PowerBook G4 15" 1.67Ghz which turned out to have a bad battery, but because at that time the battery problem was either not yet known or not yet acknowledged by Apple, the battery was not only used in the 15", but when it was sent back from Apple after the first of three service attempts, the bad battery was not replaced and was sent back to me and I, not having been informed there was a battery problem of any kind, continued to use the computer until its hard drive then its logic board failed. Eventually, I found out about the exchange program by accident (and was officially informed by Apple one year later, in June 2006; ironically, the 15" had been replaced with one of the first MacBook Pros in March 2006). I include this history because I have always wondered if the bad battery damaged the 15"'s logic board. Now this 12", which I just bought, whose bad battery has been installed for years is having major issues: the screen freezes within the first 2 minutes of booting from disk, hard drive or network boot image (it has never booted to the desktop since I've owned it); it heats up under the hard drive/near the video chip; when TDM is attempted, the screen stays black altogether and the 12" never appears on the host's desktop. It will boot into Open Firmware but not in single user mode. There is some kind of white sticky substance present in small amounts around the pins thar lock the battery into the well. For the record, the 12" is otherwise in seeingly flawless condition with no dents or other signs of being dropped and inside it is clear no one has disassembled it or even removed the topcase. When the battery is removed and the AC power connected it still won't boot. Sorry this is so long.

The actual runtime of a battery depends on several factors, including what you are doing with your PowerBook. Information on stretching out your battery's runtime is available in this article. For a daily planner, try using iCal in the /Applications/ folder, or dTasks if iCal won't do what you want.

  • Solution - Battery error is detected. Irreparable damage to the battery has been detected. Replace

I own a T61 7658 I bough on 2008, it worked great with the default power settings until October 22nd I decided to change my power profile to MAXIMUM PERFORMANCE.
Next day I received on Message Center...
10/23/2010 - Battery health is critical. With the current system settings and a full charge, your battery can provide approximately 3.0 hours of use. A new battery could provide up to an estimated 5.5 hours.
I kept using the Laptop with the Max performance until...
11/12/2010 - Battery error is detected. Irreparable damage to the battery has been detected. Replace the battery with a new one.
I have used IBM/Lenovo  for years and even had used batteries for 5 years without a single issue.
I have read many posts of people having the same problem not only with T61s, but many other Lenovo models, and also read posts of Lenovo's administrators suggesting this is normal and justifying that batteries should be good for at least 12 months and after that we are on own, basically meaning we should be thankful in name of our own safety that we had that battery protection and we must replace it at our own cost and forget about it.  That is a very easy way out, isn’t it.
But certainly, not only batteries with more than 12 months are failing, even new batteries are and have been replaced with multiple exchange programs posted by Lenovo in their website just as in http://download.lenovo.com/lenovo/content/batt/082009/LandingPage.html. and also in multiple MIGR battery replacement campaigns available to all online as well.
Good thing here is that Lenovo has recognized the problem and has exchange the batteries still under warranty and also few of the batteries without warranty limiting to some serial numbers on the MIGR battery replacement campaigns, but the bad side is that Lenovo is leaving behind other clients like me and many others not being selected for replacement.  But I’m sure we all have a good battery but turned useless due to the Lenovo programmed safety temperature limits in the power manager and the battery board.  Please let me explain.
This is my conclusion.  There is nothing wrong with used or new batteries or their cells in 99% of the cases, I'm sure my battery is okay although is being turned useless by the battery protection feature on my T61.
Lenovo must recognize the problem is the settings they have programmed on the power manager and battery protection board. It is very understandable that when users select a Power Scheme that demands higher amounts of power to generate better performance on the system this also demand additional power generating heat on battery and on the power supply as the computer is running at full performance, just as happens on my ipod when watching video, or in my kid’s R/C truck when running continuously and will happen with any other battery powered device.
Therefore any scheme requiring performance is generating heat and is tripping the battery protection and this is not a client’s fault, as are we just using an available scheme provided on our Lenovo system. If the battery protection is not calibrated to support this power demand, then there is a poor design/testing of the capabilities of the system and the battery protection parameters that instruct the battery to save itself from a fire or burning … which is understandable.
The bad side is that there is not possible reset option for the end users, the only option is to buy a new battery at our own cost after the 12 months of warranty, when the cause of the problem is originated in the computer system design settings and can happen at any time, that is way, the system warned me, as in:
10/23/2010 - Battery health is critical. With the current system settings and a full charge, your battery can provide approximately 3.0 hours of use. A new battery could provide up to an estimated 5.5 hours.
The computer is saying! At maximum performance, You are using too much power, and my battery will last just 3 hrs (9 cells on my system) instead of the 5.5 hrs that should last. But not only the running time was reduced, the heat on the power supply system and Battery was also increased due to the higher power demand, the battery can not handle the demand and protect itself to prevent fire or damage.
So who has to pay for this?  Can Lenovo do something about it? For us client and for future clients?  This not a matter of having or not having warranty, this can happen at any time in any computer.
I'm writing this hoping to be heard and supported and I hope LENOVO provides a satisfactory solution to the issue.  I'm not going to say will never buy Lenovo again I already did, I invested my money on Lenovo and with warranty or not I'm looking forward to get a decent response.
Lenovo must change the parameters for tripping battery protection probably handled at BIOS level, and to provide a reset feature to all "locked" batteries there is many people that has lost at least one battery, some other more than that.  Since even if we get a replacement, the chances  the issue will continue is there, as long as I select a high power demand scheme the problem sooner or later will be back.   Even car makers support their clients beyond the warranty if they detect that the issue compromises safety and their reputation.  Fix it.

  • Can a bad battery affect my MBP's performance, even when plugged in?

Well, as the title says... my battery status says "Service Battery", and although I know the instructions are simple ("dude, take your laptop's battery for servicing!"), a few months ago my financial situation changed, I'm trying to adjust the budget as much as I can for now, and I'm not sure I can afford to spend much money at the moment.
The thing is, my laptop's performance has been slowly getting worse all the time. at first, it was only with resource-intensive applications, but lately, even having more than 5 tabs open in Chrome gets the system all laggy. Now, as I've read on other threads talking about batteries being in bad shape, I would assume that, if the system can't draw much power, it can't work as hard, so a bad battery could be the culprit of such performance. However, if my laptop's plugged in, shouldn't it be drawing power straight from the outlet, hence being able to get all the juice it needs to feed both the 9400M & 9600M GT?

Not necessarily, if the battery is trying gobble some power, as the bad batt is still in the charge/power circut. 446 cycles is quite a bit, and not a bad run, it also depends on how it has been used.
I would replace it ASAP as it is possible that it may create/cause more severe issues. A new battery is less $$ than more serious damage that could possibly result from leaving it in.

  • New iPod touch bad battery life? Already tried tips and support said nothing is wrong...

I just got a new ipod the other day because my 4th gen had a really bad battery(it was very old). When I tried my new one out, I noticed it was just as bad. I tried all the powers saving tips but unfortunately they do not work. I called apple yesterday and they said it was fine( they looked at the battery through the diagnostics thing I think). Anyone know what to do?

We'll, I don't know a full charge, but it was at about 80-90% yesterday when I took it off the charger. All I did was listen to iTunes Radio and use my snapchat on and off and I got the 20% warning in less than an hour

  • My powerbook G4 has stopped recognising the battery, why might this be and what can I do?

Hi There, after  knock my powerbook g4 has stopped recognising the battery, why might this be and what might I do?

What does "after knock my powerbook..." mean? Did it fall on the floor or ?
First, reset the PMU. That can often fix power-related glitches.  If that doesn't do it, you can try a PRAM reset:
    Shut down your Mac.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command (⌘), Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.
If one of those two steps doesn't change anything, do you have another working battery you can substitute?

  • Good or bad battery???

i charged my macbook fully last night and used it this morning...i checked my battery status and says 99%-2:55 remaining...then after 97%-4:11 remaining...
    i also check preferences....
    full charge capacity : 5489
    remaining capacity : 5407
    amperage : -1496
    voltage : 12294
    cycle count : 3

your stats seem ok.. i've gotten it as high as 142 hours temporarily, when its discharging.. the battery time to die measurement is at best an estimate..
what were you running that you were drawing -1400 amps? thats a bit excessive...
i run a problem called IBatt2 it has a grading system which compares your battery to the median of the same type of system battery... it will also show you the essential data...
my battery with 45 cycles, gets a "C" grade on their system.

  • I Have been getting BAD battery life after the ICS UPDATE !! on the DROID RAZAR MAXX have this happen to any one else ??????

i have been getting really bad battery life after install ICS on my droid razar maxx i can only go 1 day and 3 hours where i used to be able to go 2 day easy have this happen to anyone else can someone tell me how i can make my battery life better??????/ and do i need to let my phone go complete dead before fully chargeing it again ??????
before install the ICS update i had 30 percent of battery life remaining so i pluged it in and let charged for a little bit while it updated my phone and ever thing after it updated i unplug my phone and started playing on my phone to see what ICS was all about but when it got to 15 and said " connect to your changer so i did !!!!! should i haved let my phone going complete dead since i unplug without it fully changer or does it matter ?????????????? if someone could please help me !!!!:)

What was your battery reading right after the update when you unplugged the phone? I have never let my Maxx drain further than 20% battery ever before I charge it. Yesterday after the update I also played more with the phone trying to learn the OS, as did most everyone on this forum. Give it a few days of your normal use before you decide your battery life has decreased. I took my phone off charger today at noon, it was 100%, and now it's 80%, with about 30 min talk time, and mostly standby. that's about normal batt life for me, maybe a little better than before the update. I'm still going to watch it for a few days before I make a conclusion about battery life.

  • Powerbook won't run off of battery - requires PMU reset to power up with AC

Like everyone else posting here, my powerbook won't run from the battery. I have two batteries, one that came with the computer 3 - 4 years ago and a newer one that I purchased about 1 year ago. When I am plugged into AC using iStat Nano the newer battery shows cycles 173, health 89%. The older battery show cycles 0 and health 100% (go figure!). Both batteries just say 'calculating' on the tool bar battery meter. The light around the AC adapter plug always shows green as if the batteries are fully charged.
Here is where my post differs from the others. Once I shut down the computer I can't power it up again with reseting the PMU. I've tried reseting NVRAM and deleting and re-establishing the powermanagement plist as suggested elsewhere on this forum to no avail.
Is the PMU something that can be replaced? How is it related to DC-IN? I've read elsewhere here that is another problem that could cause these symptoms. Has anyone had these two components repaired and did it fix the problem? How much did it cost?
Thanks in advance for any information you can give men.

I had the same experience. I have 10.4.10 on the cloned drive but the battery is still not charging. I decided to take a closer look at the battery updater instructions and discovered that even though I am at 10.4.11 on my Powerbook the BatteryUpdater.bundle was at revision 1.1.3 and hadn't been updated since Jan 6, 2006. So I downloaded the BatteryUpdate that is posted at the top of this forum and installed it. It has made no difference in the operation of the computer. The AC adapter still isn't charging the battery although the green ring light is on which usually indicates the battery is charged. furthermore, when I go back and look at the date and version number on the BatteryUpdater.bundle they haven't changed. Who knows what the update actually changed! There is no mention of it running in the software update log. My system profiler says:
    The battery is installed
    Full charge Capacity 3890
    Remaining Capacity 0
    Cycle Count 173
AC adapter cannot charge battery: YES
By the way, my battery is a replacement battery.
I have just about exhausted all my option other than taking it into an Apple repair store and I'm not sure at this point I want to give Apple any more of my money. I am going to live with it the way it is for a while in the hopes that someone will post a fix for the problem. Good luck with your investigation. If you find out anything else please post it here as I will check back on a regular basis. If I find out anything else I will do the same. Nice working with you.

  • Macbook Pro Bad battery better than none?

    Hello!!
I know this might sound crazy but on yesterday my Macbook Pro (early 2008) battery expanded while connected to my mac. I didnt notice this until I powered it on and couldnt use my track pad. I thought maybe the mac had been stepped on or something.     To make a long story short, I am a DJ and use my Macbook pro for that purpose. I have a gig coming real soon and I've read that the mac will only run at 1Ghz or so without the battery. I need my computer to run full speed as its needed for my DJ program. I cannot risk it lagging during a gig! I refuse to put the exploded battery in it and I'm sure Apple will do nothing about this outdated Mac. I ordered a non-working battery hoping to be able to use my Mac at full power until I can purchase a working battery. Will this work? I know your asking why order a bad battery? I couldnt order a working one and get it delivered by my gig date.
    Thank you!

I'm not sure why no battery would slow things down, but I've never tried it. Again, why not just see what it does with no battery?
If the OSX senses that there is no battery present, it will throttle the CPU.  This is to protect the Mac from those situations where electrical loads are such that the charger alone cannot handle them and the battery is used to supplement the charger.
    Ciao.

What have you figured out? Anything? What you show just shows a pretty quiet system except for firefox having a bunch of tabs open. You've got some page ins and outs so you maybe your'e hitting your HD with swap files more than what you think?
I think something like coconut battery app or something like it will tell you the charge cycles on the battery. How many do you have?
Lastly, are you using any extensions like ad blocker, or click to flash?

  • Power Mac Desktop G3 Blue & White - Bad Battery?

Hello all - I just found you G3 guys here
I have this older G3 Blue & White 350 mhz loaded with OS 9.1, and I haven't powered it up for a number of years. When I went to power it up, the network clock was naturally out of wack. Got an error which said:
Network Time in error set for 1956. I reset the time and date several times, and although it works briefly, it won't keep accurate time. Is this indicative of a battery replacement? The battery is small and cylindrical - shaped like a camera battery - Not Flat.
Yes? And if so, is it any big deal to replace? Do I need to reset anything?
And another problem is that the power button periodically gets stuck. Sometimes it retracts, and sometimes it doesn't. Sometimes the machine is starting to boot, when it just cuts off. If I wait a while, it can eventually start and boot up completely but usually gives the bad time error message again. Is this a separate issue? Or could it be related to a bad battery, and bad time and date?
    Thank you
    Mike

    ENIGMACODE,
Yes, the minature - 1/2 AA height - battery is the one to replace. Radio Shack sells them for $15 or you can shop on line and find some for half that.
If you have a power strip and all components are plugged in, when you turn off the power strip, you turn off the only source of power to keep you clock going. You can shut down the computer but not turn off the power strip and the clock will continue to work fine. My B&W has gone more than a year on a dead battery.
If you startup, set the clock, then hit restart, the correct time should be retained in memory because the power is not interupted. If it loses the time during that reset or restart, you have other issues.
The sticking power button is most likely misaligned plastic. Double check to make sure that it is not sticking. Then use the keyboard to turn on and off the computer. That will isolate the switch to see if the problems are related or not.

  • My new Iphone 5c drops battery life by 20% in an hour without me touching it? I believe it is a bad battery has anyone else had this problem?

I haven't touched my Iphone 5c for an hour besides a few texts and it as dropped its battery life by 20% I also took it off the charger (at three in the morning) at 90% and woke up to a 70% battery life. I got this phone yesterday and let it die and recharge like you are supposed too, I think it is a bad battery but I am wondering as anyone else had this problem before? I want to know if I should be taking this back or not? Also while charging last night the phone got very hot which is also very concerning.

Ipod touch has bad battery and suddenly turns off but only works when its on a dock with speaker...
any advice on what to do, because i am thining of getting the battery replace

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iPod fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - If still not successful that indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.
