Powerbook G4 12" intermittent power up problems

Yesterday, the 12" Powerbook G4 (2.5 years old) went to sleep and then wouldn't wake up.
So I restarted it. It would attempt to start, make some noises, and then shut down again. No chime. Sometimes, it would chime and start correctly. Once started, it never seems to have any problem keeping running.
I thought maybe the battery is the problem because it is being recalled. I removed the battery, plugged in the power adapter. Same thing.
Do any of you have experience with this issue? Is it a known issue (like wear to some internal component causing intermittent shorts), or is it a PSU/inverter board problem that requires component replacement?
Thanks for any insight.

Hi PPC7410,
Two things you can try:
1. Reset the Power Management Unit
2. Insert the original PowerBook Restore DVD and hold down the option key while pressing the power button till you see a gray screen with a few harddrive icons. Select "Hardware Test" and follow the instructions to perform a full system check.
Good luck!

  • Sony Vaio VPCEB3F4E intermittent power on problems

    Hi All
Model above. Four years old, new SSD, everything else factory. Fan cleaned six months ago.
Was working away one day and just turned off. Wouldn't boot back up. Tried to take out battery, hold power for 30 seconds, then boot didn't work (power light goes green for five seconds and then turns off). After one go it booted up and went to home screen as normal, then turned off again and wouldn't boot ( light green for five seconds and then off) I left it overnight not plugged in and came back this morning and it booted fine, worked all day on it and then exact same thing happened. Now it is not booting again, the power light is still going green for five seconds but then just turns off. There doesn't appear to be any movement from fan etc.
    Notes
The fan has been spinning loud of late but wasn't when it did work for a few hours. Battery life has been fine.
The green light won't come on with the battery in, only works with battery out now. However previously, when it booted earlier today the battery was in. Not sure how much help this is, the true definition of an intermittent fault!
    Thanks for your help.

  • Intermittent power problem Canon 5D Mark iii

My Canon 5D Mark iii (2 years old) has an intermittent power problem, as described below. It may simply be a question of cleaning the terminals that the battery connects to. I haven’t tried since I can’t reach them at the bottom of the battery compartment.
    Details as follows:
this is a recent problem in the last 3 weeks
the problem occurs with all three Canon batteries that I use
from time to time when the power is on, the camera suddenly loses all power and displays an “empty” battery image
sometimes it happens of its own accord while no demand is being placed on the camera
but more usually it occurs at the moment of focusing (I use back focus on the * button)
it is often fixed by turning the power off and then on again. This fixes it half the time
it is always fixed by turning the power off, removing and then re-inserting the battery
needless to say this is very annoying!
Since coming back from a trip, while transferring images from the camera to my computer, I noticed that the (almost) full battery started showing “empty”.
The transfer was completed successfully, and when the camera was disconnected from the computer, the battery showed that it had lots of charge left. Very puzzling!

It sounds like either the battery terminals aren't getting a solid contact or there's a fault (something loose or grounding out) inside the camera.  But if something were genuinely loose or grounding out inside the camera, then power cycling or even re-inserting batteries would probably not fix it -- which makes me suspect it's still something outside the camera.
Are any of the batteries new, or are they all about the same age as the camera?
Batteries only last a few years but it'll depend on how they were used.  In other words if all three were used about the same and enough charge cycles to be at the end of their reliable life... it might be time to replace them.
It's difficult for the internal battery terminals to get dirty unless the battery itself had something on the battery iteself when you inserted it.  You can try a bit of denatured alcohol on a cotton swap to reach in and clean the terminals.  Also, inspect the batteries to make sure they're all clean.

  • G3 imac DV SE power up problem

I've run out of ideas on this one, so any help or suggestions are greatly appreciated.
I have an intermittent power up fault with an imac dv 400Mhz 512Mb RAM.
On powering up via the keyboard or the main front button the power light comes on and stays green but no screen or hard drive noise goes along with it, pulling out the mains and reconnecting usually but not always allows the machine to boot and when it does manage to start up zapping the PRAM causes the machine to shut down.
When trying to install Panther from MacOS 9.2.2 the machine attempts to restart but shuts down and can't be started without difficulty.
The original battery that came out was completely dead and has been replaced with a used one that has good voltage.
The only other thing that sometimes makes a difference is disconneting the keyboard and powering up from the main switch.
I have reset the PMU, and upgraded the firmware and checked the logic board voltages J9,C10 and the J7 pins and all seem very close to the required outputs (how close do they need to be?) the only thing I haven't checked yet is the F901 fuse.
Is it likely that the PAV board is kaputt? or that the keyboard is causing the problems?
I'd really like to try and get this running as I use an identical machine upgraded with a 120Gb disc and 1Gb RAM running Tiger at my workplace that runs beautifully so I think it is worth trying to fix.
Or shall I give up on it?
G3 Imac DV SE   Mac OS X (10.3.4)

If it consistently works with the keyboard detached, I'd switch keyboards with that other iMac to see if that's the cause. I would also buy a "new" battery instead of trying to re-use a used one. Another good test is to try it with one 256MB module at a time, to see of if one of them is faulty. Sometimes, RAM modules that worked fine with Mac OS 9 do not work with Mac OS X.

  • IMac (2007) intermittent power issues

    Hi,
I have a 2007 iMac. I am getting intermittent power issues with it.
One day it wont power up at all...and might not power up for a number of weeks. And just when I have given up on it, it will power up and work for a wee while without any issues (including being shutdown nightly). It'll work for a while and then it'll stop working and again it may take a couple of weeks before it'll start working again.
Does anyone have any idea what might be the issue?
    any help/advise greatly appreciated.

Hi IsMiseAodh - did you ever determine what the cause of intermittent no response to power was?  I have a iMac with a similar problem.  Thanks!

  • Intermittent power issue

Have intermittent power problem that has just lately started. If Imac put to sleep via the side bar I sometimes cannot get it to boot up either by using the space bar ( which is how I normally awake it) or by using the power button. The logic board, power supply and the wire for the power supply has just been replaced and the problem has happened again. The iMac has been plugged into a UPS for some time and doesn't appear to be the problem as other items work OK. I can reboot the Imac if I pull the power plug and re-plug whenever the problem has arisen. I can also reboot by shutting the UPS of and the on again. Any thoughts?

Similar problem here. I think it's due to intermittent contact between the pins on the output connector of the ac power adapter and the power receptacle on the laptop.
With the power connector firmly plugged in at the back of the laptop, if I move the connector slightly from side to side, there are some positions where the slightest movement disconnects and reconnects the external supply. This is quite serious because often you need to be sure that external power is connected. For example, at the moment I can't rely on the battery being charged up if I leave the machine unattended.
(I wonder why Lenovo left off the customary LED to indicate when AC power is connected? Without a lamp, it's quite difficult to trouble-shoot problems like this).

  • Power management problems

A couple of weeks ago I installed quite a few of the patches in the recommended list.
Since then, I get the following message repeated continually in the console window:
    DPMSSet: Invalid argument
    Power management problems
I'm runnig solaris 8 on a ultra 5. I looked in the power.config file and in the startup scripts, but couldn't find any reference to "DPMSSet." Any ideas on the cause and solution of the message?
I never use the powerd daemon, so killing the process seems to eliminate the messages.

  • Powerbook 145 can't power on

havn't power it on for years. Would like to repair it and have it power on again. Where and who can repair it?

For a computer as old as this one, you would have to ask someone with the necessary experience in reparing electronic devices. Do not automatically expect an authorised service centre to be able to handle it.
Would it be correct to assume that there is absolutely no reaction from the PowerBook when trying to power on? No sounds, and nothing at all on the screen? If so, try removing the battery. Resetting the Power Manager is probably not going to change anything in this case.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1781
If still nothing, check the power adapter. Use a digital multimeter for this. The power adapter output voltage should be 7.5 V DC. The outer ring is minus and the centre is plus .
If the power supply is OK, one would have to open the computer. There are four Torx screws in the lower piece and one Torx screw near the HDI-30 SCSI port. One suspect could be a soldered (surface-mounted) fuse on the main board (reference F1?) near the battery contacts. Other possible culprits could include leaking/damaged (surface-mounted) electrolytic capacitors.

  • Power supply problem a little better after unplugging imac for 24 hours

    Hello,
I'm currently having power supply problems (at least I hope it's the power supply and not the mother board), similar to many others I've seen on these boards. What I've noticed is that if I unplug my iMac for about 24 hours I can get it to run again for a little while. Unplugging it for a few minutes (or even 8 hours) doesn't seem to help. My iMac won't get much further than the starting chime before it loses power. But it seems to me that unplugging it for 24 hours has gotten me between 5 days to 5 hours of use before I unexpectedly lose power.
Is there anything to account for this or am I just imagining things? Ultimately, I don't think the answer will help me much, but I am curious to know. I'm taking my iMac to a Mac Genius tomorrow to see if they can help diagnose the problem. I saw a little hit in my video today, which was a first, so I suspect the problem may be getting worse. I'll probably be buying a new power supply soon.

I'm having the same problem. They say to restart you have to unplug the power, wait 10 seconds and then plug it back in but apparently it's not enough. I have to unplug for about 30 seconds, plug back in, and wait anywhere from 30 minutes to several hours before it'll start up again properly. The last time I had this issue was in october '06- when I had a new logic board and power supply put in. Now I'm worried because my applecare is expired by about 3 months. I bought the computer in feb. '05. I hope a new board doesn't cost more than what the computer itself is worth but I'm afraid that'll be the case...

  • I have power ic problem in my iphone 4s. please tel me the solution

i have power ic problem in my iphone 4s. please tel me the solution. thank you

The chargers for the 3GS and 4S are the same.  That's not your problem, unless they are both defective.
Plug it in to mains power for at least 15 minutes.  If it doesn't automatically come on, try a Reset... press the home and sleep/lock buttons until you see the Apple logo, ignoring the slider. Takes about 5-15 secs of button holding and you won't lose any data or settings.

  • G750 power button problem

    Hi guys,
So the problem with my laptop is that when I press the power button, the power button itself and the two leftmost lights below the touchpad- power and battery- they light up for a second or two. But the laptop doesn't start up and the lights go off. If I long press the power button, the laptop starts, though.
Now this is not a severe problem as of now, I know. But I'm pretty sure this will escalate into something else. Does anyone know what the problem actually is and what I can do to solve it?
P.S.: Unlike people with power button problems, I didn't do anything with the hardware or software.

    Hi Sanjana,
    Welcome to Lenovo Community!
I’m sorry to hear that the Power button is not working as expected in your G750 Laptop. I would suggest you to perform the Flee-Power, below are the steps to perform the same:
Remove the battery and any other peripheral device connected to the computer.
Hold the power button for 10-15 seconds and then connect only the AC Adapter and try to turn ON the computer.
If the issue persists even after performing Flee-Power, I would suggest you to contact our Technical Support for further Assistance to get the details of the nearest Authorized Service Center to get the issue analyzed.
Click here to open a link where you can select the country and get the exact contact support number. I’m sure they will be a great help.
Do post us back for further queries.
