PowerBook G4 12" kernel panic on reboot.

Hello all.
I've recently obtained a PowerBook G4 12" (1.33 GHz) and I've installed Tiger on it.
I noticed it kernel panics on reboot and not a shutdown THEN reboot. (or in technical terms, a "cold book.")
I've also tried installing Leopard on it, but it runs very slugishly, but here's the catch: It doesn't kernel panics on reboot.
Another thing is that the kernel panic is linked to the AirPort Extreme Card. I repaired permissions and ran AHT, no problems found.
Could anybody help me figure this out?

Can you post some of your crash logs? Might be a clue. See Mac OS X: How to log a kernel panic http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2546
Understanding crash logs isn’t easy and it’s hard (sometimes impossible) to decipher the cause of the problem. Take a look at Apple’s Crash Reporter document at http://developer.apple.com/technotes/tn2004/tn2123.html Also look at Tutorial: An introduction to reading Mac OS X crash reports

Kernel panics are usually caused by a hardware problem – frequently RAM, a USB device or a Firewire device. What external devices do you have connected? When trying to troubleshoot problems, disconnect all external devices. Do you experience the same problems?
To eliminate RAM being the problem, Look at this link: Testing RAM @ http://guides.macrumors.com/Testing_RAM Then download & use Memtest & Ramber.
Do you have an Apple Hardware Test disc (the AHT is on the Install/Restore DVD that came with your Mac)? Running the Apple Hardware Test in Loop Mode is an excellent troubleshooting step for finding intermittent hardware problems. It is especially useful when troubleshooting intermittent kernel panics. If Loop Mode is supported by the version of the Apple Hardware Test you are using, you run the Extended Test in Loop Mode by pressing Control-L before starting the test. Looping On should appear in the right window. Then click the Extended Test button. The test will run continuously until a problem is found. If a problem is found, the test will cease to loop, indicating the problem it found. If the test fails, be sure to write down the exact message associated with the failure. In some cases, RAM problems did not show up until nearly 40 loops, so give it a good run.
May be a solution on one of these links.

  • 15" Macbook Pro Mid 2010 . Constant Kernel Panic and Reboot

Hello, im having this issue from six months ago. The problem its a constant rebooting of my mac , when turned on shows a Kernel Panic inform that i copy here. I have contacted the tech support here in my country ( Argentina ) but they can not solve the problem. They told me than cand be a logic board issue, but in all the hardware test the macbook get an OK ! The only strange they discover is a electric problem in the usb ports, but i dont have any problems whith pen drives or usb external disks.
The rebooting its unpredicible , but in some cases like using the spacebar for previewing files if i do it five or six times it reboots instantly showing then the Kernel Error.
    I really nedd help !
Thank you, and sorry for the monkey insland English !

You have the MacBookPro6,2, the Edsel of Macs. It may be covered by this program:
MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2010): Intermittent black screen or loss of video
Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store to have the machine tested. The routine hardware diagnostics used by service providers may not detect the fault. There is a specific test for this issue.
Print the first page of the panic report, and the support page linked above, and bring them with you.
Note that the replacement program only applies within three years of purchase. If you wait beyond that date, Apple may refuse the service.
Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to an empty drive from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.
*An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed.
You may be able to stop the panics by disabling automatic graphics switching in the Energy Saver preference pane, but that's not a solution.
Most likely, the logic board will be replaced. Sometimes the replacement part is also defective, so be prepared for that possibility.

  • Upgrade to osx 10.6.8 causes kernel panic on reboot

    Hi friends,
Am reposting this as I have more infomration now.
Problem: Having installed the 10.6.8 upgrade, (currently running osx 10.6 on a 2009 iMac) then on reboot the machine undergoes a kernel panic.
General Observations; The machien has given ZERO problems since I bought it. The only peripherals are an USB apple keypad and an apple USB Mouse connected to the keyboards ancillary USB port.
    Diagnostic actions to date;
    1. Completely erased disk, created new partition, verified disk and also verified disk permissions (all good).
    2. Re-installed Snow Leopard.
    3. Cleared PRAM using the option-command-P-R (waited for 4 Apple Chimes).
    Result: Nada !
    System still crashes.
Geranal Notes: As I live in Malaysia, Lion DVD installation kit is still nto available here.  So I have to upgrade to Lion via the net. However, I cannot upgrade to Lion unless I first complete ythe other 10.6 related upgrades (this is my undertanding).
Question: Anyone out there with any ideas ? What about the folks over at Apple. This is fairly basic stuff. An Apple mandated Upgrade renders an Apple Hardware platform inoperable.

A: If your machine had a completely erased hard drive and a fresh install of OS x 10.6 (no other software installed) and you got kernel panic's then it's the 10.6 disk, you'll need to clean it or get a new one from Apple.
If the new disk also produces the same problem, then it's got to be the hardware.
B: If your machine is like A, but the kernel panics started when you updated to 10.6.8 (no other software installed) then it's a bad update. Reinstall with the 10.6.8 Combo Update instead. Also c boot off the 10.6 disk and Repair Disk, the 10.6.8 update did something to the drive that it needs repair.
C: If your machine was fine on 10.6, installed third party software worked, then kernel panics started after the 10.6.8 update. Then it's compatability issues with kext files and 10.6.8 changes.
The 10.6.8 update borked a lot of third party kernel extension files (kext) installed in OS X.
What you can do is this:
Hold the Shift key down to boot into Safe Mode, this will disable the kext files from loading, backup your files off the machine (not TimeMachine) and disconnect all drives.
Go around and update all your third party software so it's compatible with 10.6.8,
If you need a clue, look in your System/Library/Extensions and usually the names of the companies are on the kext file names. Sometimes copy protected software will use another companies copy protection system, so it will be under another name.
Funny thing about kext files, they are not all in the System/Library/Extensions folder to load upon boot, they can be located anywhere the program decides and loaded when the program loads.
If you have programs that are auto-launching at log-in then naturally so does it's kext files.
10.6 will run all your present software and drivers for hardware just fine, 10.7 will not and is NOT advised for older hardware. Early 2011 or later Lion is just fine, but you'll likely have to buy all new software to work with it.
Despite 2GB of RAM being Lion's minimum, 4GB is advised. Also you will need a 64 bit Intel Mac, not a 32 bit Intel Mac (no Lion for Core Duo's)
Tested, Lion is a hair slower than Snow Leopard
Check this site to make sure your third party programs are updated for Lion, not many are yet.
Some are undergoing a rewrite because Apple introduced a MacAppStore and likely told all the developers their programs will eventually have to comply with the restrictions placed there to run on Apple hardware, this means Apple is likely going to close up and we can't install software of our choice just like it is on iPads and iPhones.

  • 10.4.11 Kernel Panics & Auto-Rebooting

I'm having problems with my servers (a G5 Xserve running 10.4.11 OSX Server & a Power Mac G5 running 10.4.11 OSX Server) and I can't seem to pinpoint the causes.
The only reason the Power Mac G5 is running server is in case the Xserve poops out on me. The Xserve (until 3 weeks ago) was the only server being used and had run continuously for a year and a half with no problems like this at all
This is a small prepress network connected to a larger windows network in a printing plant.
The only clients that connect to these servers are G5 & Intel Macs running 10.5 and 1 or 2 wintel machines running Windows 2000.
Both machines only have the AFP & Windows services running.
*The Problem:* Both machines rather frequently either have kernel panics (the grey multi-language descending curtain) or they just automatically reboot. This seems to happen when files are copied across the network (files taking more than a minute or two to copy) to or from either machine. The problem also occurs 90% of the time when I run Software Update on either machine. This also happens when files are being copied to or from an external firewire drive on both machines.
    *Things I have checked:*
    1) I ran an ethernet cable straight from each server machine to a department workstation (to take routers and hubs out of the equation) and the problem persists.
    2) The problem persists even with Xserve RAID/Firewire Drives & Tape Backups/USB Drives disconnected
    3) I checked the RAM, Processor, disks, and volumes on both machines with Techtool Pro and it reported absolutely no problems.
Any help would be appreciated... this issue is driving me nuts.

Doug, I have the same problem, my research leads me to believe that it may be a particular 2cnd or 3rd party plug in for quick time or some 3rd party software. I went as far as reinstalling my software with no updating and it worked until I started updating everything. so If you figure it out, let me know.

  • Kernel Panic Screen Reboots

Just a couple days ago I I was watching a video on Youtube, when all of a sudden I got a "Kernal Panic" error screen as seen here:
I kind of shrugged the error off as a fluke, since most blogs and forums that talk about MacbookPro Kernel Panics are rarities. That usually don't occur again, and if they do often because of either minor issues, or on the otherhand major issues. So thinking it wouldn't happen again I used my Macbook for a while without a problem. Decided to launch Mozilla and start browsing the web (which seemed to work fine for 15 mins or so), when all of a sudden I got a second Kernel Panic error. This happened while a specific webpage was loading up (not Youtube). So that scared me, heck this is a fairly new MacbookPro. I used it again for a bit, and decided to try an experiement. I browsed for a while, then tried to visit the same webpage that gave me the Kernel Panic just before, & bam it happened again for a 3rd time!
Ok so being a bit of a tech guru I decided to run these tests to make sure all is well with my machine:
    - Booted into Safe Mode
    - Ran Disk Utility under the Recovery Partition to verify the HDD Structure
    - Checked HDD Smart status
    - Ran TechToolPro v7 to do a thorough Disk Scan of every sector on the HDD
as well as a Video Memory test, and Memory Test.
    - Booted into the Apple Hardware Test program to check my machine with the
      extended test selected
    - Verified and Repaired all Permissions errors
    - Scanned my HDD with my antivirus ESET CyberSecurity
Every single one of the aforementioned checks I did came out fine. This all took hours to do... The only thing that is never okay so to speak is the permissions errors. Which have always listed a bunch of iTunes errors that show up, but never repair even when it says they did. But that's been that way for almost a year now. I believe there's another permissions error in there somewhere that's also always been there too though (which never repairs). Anyways the only thing I have noticed odd recently is our internet acting weird during the days this happened. Not just on my MacbookPro but on our iPhones too. We're all connected via WiFi, and have noticed some pages not loading, some videos pausing, server messages, 503 errors too I believe. I tried powering off our router and modem twice. But the Kernel Panics I mentioned earlier had still happened even after doing that.
My next step is to call our ISP to make sure all is well on their end. Seeing as I haven't had a Kernel Panic occur while doing anything else, ONLY while browsing the internet. Which I have read on some blogs can happen do to bad network packets. If I'm correct then that might be what has happened. But why in the **** would a MacbookPro restart due to a Kernel Panic error just because of some bad Internet packets coming in? I would have thought pages wouldn't load, not some oblivion style error that reboots the machine! Think about it the Kernel Panics didn't happen during any of my tests which took hours to complete. The antivirus scan alone took 7 hours, on my 750GB HDD. I'm actually writing this post from the very same MacbookPro right now. The only
things I have changed on my machine in the past two weeks was install a MAudio MBox Mini audio driver, iLoc License Key program, & install Pro Tools Express. All of which work hand in hand to make the external audio box work for recording vocals/music. The drivers and software are unsigned from what I recall... I had to disable the "Install Signed Applications Only" section of the Security panel in Mountain Lion before doing so. As far as I know they're the correct drivers for my Mountain Lion OS X 10.8.5. The other thing I installed a night or two before the issues started was the newest version of ESET antivirus which installs over the exsiting one. But they're good, I've done this many times and never had an issue. I think I did a Mozilla Firefox update once in the past two weeks too. But they're known for being really good on releases. I've also used my MacbookPro for two weeks since I first installed the external audio box (which connects via usb), and never had this happen. Btw these Kernel Panics happened while the external audio interface was disconnected. Again not something that happened before in two weeks since it's been disconnected many times. I'm positive my machine is fine something I can't really put my finger on made this happen, and I'm scared it will happen again while doing something important!
    1. I don't know what to do... Is there something else I can check?
    2. Should I still call my ISP to make sure all is well on their end?
    3. & why the **** would a Kernel Panic happen due to simple Network Packets (internet) not being received correctly over wifi that would cause a sudden reboot?
    Thank You
    P.s.
I saved everyone of the Reports that came up after each of the 3 Kernel Panics happened. As per Apples little info about what the reports contain (bunch of garbled words and #'s), they mention to search it for a couple words that referr to serious hardware problems. I never found those words either while using notepad to scan them through.

The previous 2 Kernel Panics I had happen to have something similar to the above report. Which I will post below, hoping that it may help you diagnose my issue. Thank you all very much for your time, I will look into the other suggested methods of diagnosing my laptop in the meantime. Too bad I don't have Apple Care... Hope this issue can be resolved. I'm currently studying and my pockets can't take another hit right now. Like I said before I kind of kept away from using my laptop ever since I got the 3 Kernel Panics. Other then when I tested everything out as I mentioned in my first post that started this thread. But I have however began using my laptop since yesterday to post this, and browse a bit to see if the Kernel Panic would persist. I haven't had a Kernel Panic so far... One thing I did notice is the reports mention something about "Panic CPU," and "BSD process name: Eset" in all three reports. Not exactly in those words I just wrote (since each report differs). But it does lead me to think either I have a cpu issue, or the recent install of the new version of Eset I put on my machine this week has something to do with it? Again I'm no expert at reading these reports so I can't say for certain. And if it was some sort of bug in the new version of Eset antivirus, maybe the constant auto update feature of the program fixed/patched it. Which could be why I haven't experienced another Kernel Panic. Just throwing out some ideas...

  • Kernel Panic - imac rebooting please help?

    Hello
My 2009 iMac continues to reboot due to kernel panic during the past couple of week. It happes several times a day. I cannot find any specific cause and it seems to happen randomly. That is even when the computer is on standby. I hvae searched the web, but cannot find a solution. The problem is getting worse.
I have tried apple hardware test that detected no problems. I have upgraded the imac last yaer with a Samsung SSD and its running 6 gb ram. It has worked flawless until now. Should I consider buying a new Imac?
    Here is the log:

  • IMac 5K random kernel panics and rebooting

My brand new iMac 5k (I received 10 days ago) is randomly freezing, then showing kernel panic message and rebooting itself. It happens almost everyday at work with no apparent reason. Already tried reinstallling OS X, SMC and PRAM reset with no luck. The iMac is configured to never sleep, and it happens while using it, so no related with wake-up problems I read everywhere.
it's a maxed out iMac 5K (i7, 32GB of RAM, 3TB FD and the 295X 4GB VRAM) with updated Yosemite.
No peripherals attached (except an external USB 3.0 Lacie hard drive with video files for editing), no uncommon sofrware installed (only Final, Avid, Adobe Suite and Skype, Dropbox, etc.) and still happening randomly.
I had a chat with AppleCare and they told me I have 2 options:
    - Taking it to service for revision.
    - Asking for a refund or replacement.
Of course, I will not take it to revision (it's brand new!), but I don't know if ask for refund or replacement for a new one, because I readed too many iMac 5K users with similar problems. Does anyone knows if it is a common problem with iMacs 5K? If I ask for a replacement and still happens, can I ask then for a refund?

The warranty entitles you to complimentary phone support for the first 90 days of ownership.
If you bought the product in the U.S. directly from Apple (not from a reseller), you have 14 days from the date of delivery in which to exchange or return it for a refund. In other countries, the return policy may be different. If you bought from a reseller, its return policy applies.

  • Unfotunately Powerbook has a Kernel Panic :(

Hi Everyboby, I have a serius Kernel Panic problem on my PowerBook G4 15 inches sept 2004.
    OS: 10.5.1 Leopard.
Everytime that I switch-on my mac goes on Kernel Panic. The first time was yesterday evening (Sunday Feb10), while I'm playing at the game of Harry Potter and the chamber of secrets. I've got play all afternoon and in the evening it goes in Kernel Panic. From yesterday, everytime I tried to start my mac, at first go, then go on crash. I try to restart from Installation disk, I try to repair permissions, nothing, anything I tried works. The problem is the software, or the hardware? How can I remedy to re-establish my mac and his Operating System? Unfortunally I can't find the log details for the kernel. The mac don't give me time enogugh. I hope that you understand what I wrote. Sorry for my not perfect english.
    Thanks a lot.

Granted that is not a ram problem because I've change the memory 1 year and half ago, and it never give me a problem, today I find the log of the kernel panic:

  • Stuck with kernel panic, iMac reboots constantly

A couple of days ago I got a kernel panic when I tried to switch on my iMac, i.e. I got this screen: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1392
I rebooted, got the same message again before I could do much.
There was a stuck DVD, so I could not even try to boot from DVD and run a hardware check.
I searched online, and somebody had written that this problem was fixed after changing a keyboard. I tried that, and it booted OK, was able to eject the disk, and THEN I got a kernel panic message. I rebooted and was able to work a bit, make a time machine backup, etc.
Yesterday the kernel panic appeared again. I inserted the MacOS Install disk 1, to make a hardware check, but after rebooting, the machine cycled rebooting and rebooting and rebooting.
Sometimes I got a kernel panic message, but not in most cases. It seems that the problem lies before I can choose the boot mode, since I cannot do it from disk, target mode, eject disk, etc...
Today I booted without keyboard-mouse connected, and it was OK. Soon after I connected the (new) keyboard & mouse, I got a kernel panic. After rebooting it was same story: it reboots automatically every 10 seconds or so...
I also tried resetting the PRAM (last resort from http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.4/en/mh2238 ), and it seems to me that the boot sound is louder, but keeps on rebooting the same...
I just have one RAM chip that came with the computer, so it's not some RAM incompatibility...
    Any ideas?
Even if there is a way of ejecting the disk, that might help, I could try to restore the system a few days back with time machine, or run some updates, in case it is a software problem... Otherwise it seems it is a hardware problem...

Can you boot from the restore disk and use the Disk Utility app to check the disk for errors?
Restart your Mac while holding down the C key, pressing the power button and inserting your restore disk all at the same time. An Installer window will open, but do not proceed with any installations. Instead, from the Menu Bar, select Utilities > Disk Utility. In the Disk Utility window click First Aid, and then click Verify. If Disk Utility reports errors, click Repair. When Disk Utility is finished, from the Menu Bar, select Utilities/Startup Disk. Select MacintoshHD 10.x.x and click Restart.
    Resolving Kernel Panics
Try ejecting the disk by booting while holding down the mouse, or, boot while holding the Eject key on the keyboard.

  • Weekly Crashes, Kernel Panics, Freezes, Reboot, Shut Downs, HELP!

I've posted this problem everywhere but no one seems to care or have anything useful to say, so I'm asking you guys now.
    _My current situation:_
I have a Unibody MacBook Pro 15 inch, 2.53 GHz, 4GB RAM, bought in Late 2008, so it's the first generation of Unibodies.
It came with Leopard and *everything was perfect and wonderful, until I upgraded to Snow Leopard*.
Since then, approximately once or twice a week, I get various problems that involve a hard reset of the computer. This is sometimes a *complete freeze, a spontaneous reboot, a power-off without warning, or a kernel panic*. So sometimes the computer will reboot on its own, sometimes it will power off without rebooting, and sometimes it just freezes requiring me to power it off by holding the power button.
For example, the problem I just had 10 minutes ago can be described as follows:
The mouse suddenly moves a lot faster than usual, and seems to freeze from time to time. The Skype audio conversation I am having still works perfectly fine. I try to click, press exposé, but nothing reacts. The mouse reacts to movement, but moves way too fast. Then, all of a sudden, the last bit of audio from Skype keeps *looping forever*, and everything has frozen, including the mouse. Then the computer goes black and starts to reboot automatically.
This has happened many times before. Often, the computer would start to reboot (totally on its own), I would hear the startup chime, and then it would go black again, and start booting *all over again*.
Sometimes the screensaver just freezes, with random thick grey horizontal lines scanning and flickering across the screen. It won't react to anything, even the Caps Lock key won't light up when pressed.
I have noticed that these problems only seem happen when I am using the *9600M graphics card*. Not when using the 9400M. This is not for sure, as I rarely use the 9400M.
However, before you say it's a graphics card failure, let me just clarify that NONE of this happened on Leopard for a year. Absolutely nothing. Now I don't believe that by coincidence, my graphics card failed for no reason right on the day I upgraded to Snow Leopard.
I have talked with a genius and all he could say that he has no idea and that there's nothing he can do. He said it could be RAM or it could be the graphics card, but that's just based on what I told him. He could take the machine for some time and run tests on it, but I can't live without my computer at the moment, it is crucial for my studies, I'd rather have it crash every 4 days than not have a computer at all for a few days.
_What I have tried so far:_
I have run the basic Apple Hardware Test, I haven't run the Extended one yet.
I used Tech Tool Pro's non-booting interface and it shows no problems.
I repaired permissions more times that the number of atoms in the universe.
I checked the hard drive for errors using Disk Utility, nothing.
I will try reinstalling Snow Leopard if the upcoming 10.6.3 update doesn't solve the problem.
    *Then I will reinstall Leopard.*
Until then, can anyone think of anything that could help? I'm looking for SOFTWARE related issues, not hardware. If my problem is hardware, I'm doomed, as I am out of warranty, and I'm NOT paying any amount of money to fix this as I've only bought this super expensive computer a year and a half ago.
So, please help me. I'm very annoyed. My 8 year old Pentium III with Windows 2000 is more stable than this.

Here are two extracts from the Console.app, both generated during the time of two separate crashes, I would like someone who knows anything about the Console messages to have a look through it and check what's similar in both of them, and maybe point to what may be the cause. I found that each time there's something about "64 bit mode enabled" and also something like "launchd[1] has started up". I don't know what these mean but all I know is that these messages were generated during at least two crashes. The way the last two crashes happened were as follows: the mouse started being over sensitive, as I moved my finger over the trackpad, the pointer moved way too fast compared to normally. I could not click anything, and the rest of the screen was frozen, except for the strange mouse pointer. The Skype conversation in the background was still working fine, except that the person reported not seeing me anymore on the webcam. My green iSight light was still on though. Then the mouse froze and in one case the system rebooted on its own, in another case I had to do it manually.
    Here are the two logs:

  • Leopard Kernel panic - when rebooted main user account is gone

The title describes my problem well I think. My macbook running Leopard had a kernel panic. When I rebooted, the user account was gone. I booted from the Leopard DVD to reset the password, and reset the password of the root account and a mobile account - to which I have forgotten the password - with admin privileges. Neither one will log on. I'm pretty sure the mobile account will need the domain controller to successfully log on.
The root user I have never activated, so I suppose I can't use that. And without the ability to log in I can't seem to think of a way to activate it either.
There's a guest account available. And it works alright.

Will either of the two accounts log in while booted in safe mode (hold down the shift key at boot time)?

  • Powerbook G4 Unresolved Kernel Panics

    17” Powerbook G4
System would receive Kernel Panics at random intervals (while running Mac OS 10.3 Panther).
Originally believed to be an Operating System a clean install of Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger was attempted but it could not be completed (or at times even started) due to additional Kernel Panics during the Tiger installation.
At this point corrupt system memory (RAM) was thought to be a possibility as soon troubleshooting and knowledge bases pointed to. The RAM module (a 512 MB module) was removed from its original slot and placed in the open slot. When the Tiger installation was attempted again the entire process went through without any problems or panics.
After Tiger was installed all updates were installed, and software added. The system functioned without any problems but only for a matter of days, and then the panics returned.
New RAM was purchased at this time believing that the original module was corrupt, but this did not seem to solve the problem. The unit was taking to the Apple Store where the techs ran a Hardware Test and all things passed, but they noted the Hard Drive was performing irregularly and stated a bad Hard Drive as a possibility.
A new Hard Drive was purchased and did not solve these problems at all; all methods were attempted at this point:
    1. New Hard Drive, New RAM
    2. New Hard Drive, Old RAM
    3. New Hard Drive, Both Old/New RAM
The system continued to receive Kernel Panics. A full copy of Panther and Tiger were installed to a Maxtor Firewire 250GB external Hard Drive months prior, booting from this external drive seems to not exhibit any problems or panics.
Any ideas of what could be the problem? Appreciate any help?

I can't tell you about the error log, but do you have the latest OS updates? For example, this last weekend's Security Update 2007-009 v1.1 is supposed to specifically fix a problem where Safari would crash when visiting certain webpages.
OTOH, stuff sometimes happens no matter what level of update you have. Is this repeatable? Kernel panics seldom seem to stem from hard drives or logic boards.

  • RMBP kernel panic and reboot from sleep

which tells me this is not a real macintosh, nor is it a macbook pro 1,1     if you have a hackintosh issue i would goto insanelymac.com or tonymacx86.com and get support specifically for the hackintosh.  Apple can't fix this mac because its got loads of custom written code in its driver support to emulate certain features and hardware that a real mac has.

  • Kernel Panic / G4 dp500 / Cannot boot currently

    Machine Config:
    10.4.8
    G4 DP500
    1.5 gigs ram.
Internal ATA133 PCI controller card (Sonnet)
Four internal hard drives. My current 4-drive configuration:
Three 200 gig drives are connected to the internal ATA133 sonnet card, and out of those three, just one was made to be bootable with 10.4.8.
The fourth drive (160gig) is connected to the on-board ata33 connector, and is bootable with 10.3.9 on it. Presently I cannot boot from either drive
I installed the Sonnet ata133 card three months ago to expand the drive capacity. I wanted to "see" hard drives larger than 127 gigs, which is the limit if using the onboard ata33.
Everything has been working fine for 3 to 4 months after I installed the Sonnet card, and three internal drives. But about three days ago, my computer was hard-frozen when I went to use it. No mouse movement etc. When I rebooted, I received the Kernel panic black screen with its resulting verbosity.
I had a spare internal drive laying around that was preconfigured with an OS on it. So fearing the Kernel panic was from the Sonnet controller card, I installed my spare drive to connect from the mother board ata33 connector. I was then able to boot from my spare. after that I was able to repair my boot drive that was attached to my Sonnet card. The one that was initially corrupted by the Kernel panic.
After rebooting successfully to m, I decided to leave my spare boot drive attached the on-board ata33 connecter (just in case the kernel panic happened again)
Well, it did happen again. And now I can't even boot from my spare now. Its as if the kernel panic is destroying the directories of my boot drives!
    Specifically the volume header wraps.
In addition, I can't even boot from Disk Warrior or my OSX install disk. The screen just hangs at grey. So, I have no more spare boot drives available, and I cannot boot from cd/dvd. The cd/dvd drive is attached to the internal on-board ata33 like my spare is.
I know that heat will often cause a hard freeze. But will it also cause kernel panics upon reboot?
    As it stands now:
When ever I try to reboot, a black screen will display unix command line text describing kernel panic and the last line is"
    "Panic: we are hanging here."
This seems like a hardware issue. But why are my boot directories becoming corrupted? At this point, maybe its over heating. I have four drives now stuffed into the G4 with ribbon cables all over the place and a vent fan installed into one of the unused PCI slots.
I haven't installed any new hardware lately.
I upgraded to 10.4.8 and the panic still happens.
I have 30gigs of itunes, 20gigs of iphotos, 40gigs of imovies, 10 gigs of mail, etc. My back up system was using SuperDuper to copy my USER folder to another internal drive, so I know I have a backup, It's just that I cannot access it. If I can recover my data, I'm going to go out and buy a G5, transfer my data, and be done with it. If I can't recover my data, then I will be forced to live a life of quiet desperation. My wife will leave me if I've lost her itunes collection
BTW, what is a good program to back up to 8.5 gig DVD's? Can I make large 20gig .DMG files and segment then into 8.5 gig portions? I no longer want to rely on internal backup. I would feel better knowing that my back were on dvd's locked in my fire safe. When did I become so dependant on computers?!

It may not help, but it's worth a try to reset the PMU. See Mac PRAM, NVRAM, CUDA/PMU & Battery Tutorial
When trying to troubleshoot problems, disconnect all external devices except your monitor, kbd & mouse. Do you experience the same problems?
May be a solution on one of these links.
