Powerbook G4 12" - Making it as good as new!

Hello!
We use Powerbooks at work and due to a recent computer hardware upgrade, we were all given the option of buying our powerbooks from our company at a very reduced rate, which we all did.
However, they have not 'stripped' the computers for us so I have all sorts of stuff on it such as a VPN Client and Lotus Notes and so on that I do not want -
all I want is to buy a Mac OSX software disc, and just install a clean version. In other words, I want to remove any bits and pieces that my officed installed but am not sure what these are.
My queries -
1.If I buy the OS I noticed something about Intel, and my powerbook is not an Intel Machine - is it ok to just buy the latest OS X software and is this compatible with my laptop?
2.If I want to increase my RAM, Im aware this is easily done and can this be done while I wait at an Apple store ? Could I also increase my Hard Disk size thru the Apple Store ?
3.I have a few scratches on the top of my Powerbook lid and was trying to replace the top of the lid ( the part where the glowing Apple logo is ) - is it possible to do this and if so, how do I go about it (ideally, I dont want to do it myself as Im scared of damaging it).
4.How does one 'uninstall' software on a Mac ? Im not too familiar with the process and any advice much appreciated.
I suppose to sum up what I am trying to do with my Powerbook is remove any traces of my work software and applications and make it my own, so any tips on this much appreciated. I do not have the 'Restore' CD, so I have to load a new OS.
Any help much appreciated!
Cheers, Venkat
Apple Powerbook G4 12   Mac OS X (10.4.9)   1.5Ghz PowerPC G4/ 768 MB DDR SDRAM/GeForce FX Go5200

1. To verify that software mentioning Intel will run on your PowerPC-based PowerBook, look for "Universal" (referring to a universal binary that runs on Intel and PowerPC) logo next to the MacOS icon. (See http://www.apple.com/universal/ )
3. There are several companies out there who do Mac/PowerBook repairs or parts:
• http://www.powerbookmedic.com/ (Parts & Repair)
• http://www.powerbooktech.com/ (Parts)
4. To uninstall an application on the Mac, go to your "Applications" folder and drag the app or it's folder to the trash. Empty trash. Application "uninstalled." Some apps may come with uninstallers in their application folder as well.

I am being prompted to enter security questions when making a purchase on my new IPad.  I don't believe I have ever setup security questions on my apple id.  I have tried logging into my apple id and have chosen the security and priviacy settings to set up security questions.  However I am prompted to enter answers to security questions and am told they don't match.  How to I create new security questions or reset them?

You need to ask Apple to reset your security questions; ways of contacting them include phoning AppleCare and asking for the Account Security team, clicking here and picking a method for your country, and filling out and submitting this form.
They wouldn't be security questions if they could be bypassed without Apple verifying your identity.

  • As I import new cds, I have been making a playlist of the new album.  Would this result in reduced storage space on my ipod?

I have a 120 gig Ipod classic, and have frquently made a playlist of each new album after imporitng the album.  Is this resulting in using double the storage space on my ipod?
    thanks!

    No, it's simply a list.
However, I have to ask, why are you making a Playlist of each new album? To find any album on an iPod Classic, simply use the Album menu.

  • I am having trouble making TM work with my new iMac.

I'm having trouble making TM work with my new iMac.  I have an external drive, Freeagent GoFlex Drive, that is recognized on the desktop and in the drive utility.  Time machine just "spins it's wheels" and doesn't seem to transfer any information.  I have run repair disk on both drives and repair permissions.  Any ideas how I can make this thing work?

Did you format the HD first. It has to be formatted to Mac OS Extended (Journaled). If you're not sure how to do this please read:

  • My Paper Strip Method for Cleaning BlackBerry Tour 9630 Trackball, Make Good as New!

I just completed a quick little tutorial demonstrating my paper strip method for cleaning the trackball of the BlackBerry Tour 9630. As many of you know, cleaning the trackball on the Tour can be difficult since you can't remove it from the device like on previous BlackBerrys. Well, I've come up with a pretty successful solution that can get your trackball working good as new again.
You can check out some testimonies on the CrackBerry.com forums if you like.
Please consider leaving a comment below or on YouTube if this method helped you.
    Thanks!
YouTube - Paper Strip Method for Cleaning BlackBerry Tour 9630 Trackball, Make it Good as New!

    DO NOT DO THIS!
Paper strip didn't fix anything on my trackball, and on the thrid attemt, ripped off under the trackball rendering my phone all but useless. This is a good way to really screw your phone up. Can't beleive the RIM site is linked to it.........

  • Looking for help in making my computer good enough to play games

I bought a computer from Best Buy right after Christmas. It's a HPE-410y. I'm pretty happy with it in terms of speed and ease of use. I'm glad to be finally done with freaking Vista and blue screens of death.
Anyho, a buddy of mine wants me to play Bad Company 2 with him. I don't know much about the game other than its a shooter. However, I did read in the editoral review that the ATI 5570 my computer came with is weak. Also, 300Watt power supply needs to be upgraded as well? Do you think a graphics card/power supply upgrade is all I need? hmmm
I have glanced at the graphics cards at Best Buy when I've been up there, but not exactly sure what will work, what is good. Looking for any advice and help on what I should possible buy to get this computer good enough to play games.  I wanna do this maybe the end of next month. My budget is 450 bucks. I don't need to pay to have any upgrades I decide to get installed, my brother can help me do that. I just need help in what to buy.
    Thanks for any feedback.

Agreed that it's an above average computer. If you still want to do the upgrade:

Coming right at your budgeted $450.
If you like my post, or solution to your issue/question, go ahead and click on the little star by my name and/or accept the post as the Solution. It makes me happy.
I'm NOT an employee of Best Buy, or Geek Squad, though I did work as an Agent for a year 5 years ago. None of my posts are to be taken as the official stance that Best Buy will take on your situation. My advice is just that, advice.
Unfortunately, that's the bad luck of any electronic, there's going to be bad Apples... wait that's a horrible pun.

  • Making Stereo Sound Good For Mono Broadcast.

    hi!
in FCP, how can i check whether my stereo audio will sound good during a mono broadcast or through a mono TVset?
    thanks.

    Hi
To monitor your stereo sequence in mono, and you are not using an external mixer where you can sum the audio channels:
Open your sequence settings, click on the Audio Outputs Tab and Select Dual Mono.
Then open the Audio Mixer (menu Tools > Audio Mixer) and on the Master faders press the "Downmix" button.
This will allow you to hear your audio summed to mono.
Remember to reverse these settings before you output your stereo version.
    Hope this helps.

    else
    result.setText("Error in GUI");
    }

BoxLayout is a good choice, but insert glue before and after your items like
    row1.add(Box.createHorizontalGlue());
This will eat up any space beyond the controls preferred width.
or if it's the height thats a problem, change the content's layout to BoxLayout, and insert
    content.add(Box.createVerticalGlue());
to eat up extra vertical space beyond the control's preferred height.
i find that a combination of Border and Box layouts will get you what you want 99% of the time.

  • Powerbook G4 started making HD noises I don't think it did before?

This might sound odd but when I'm scrolling pages or sometimes when I'm moving the mouse the HD (im assuming) has started to make sounds it didn't before, is this normal and just what happens? I just hoped something wasn't starting to "go" in the hardware. It's nothing really loud and everythign runs fine, I'd just like to make sure

  • I am trying to transfer files from my PowerBook G4 (OSX 10.4.11) to my new iMac (Mountain Lion).  Migration assistant tells me I need to upgrade migration assistant on the G4, but I can't find a download that will work for anything older than OSX 10.5.

Yes, my PowerBook G4 is still trucking along.  It is running OSX 10.4.11, but I just bought a new iMac that is running Mountain Lion.  I just tried to use Migration Assistant.  It told me to update Migration Assistant on the G4, but I can't find an update for anything earlier than 10.5.  Is there a way to get my files transfered, or am I going to need to update the OS on my computer I was getting ready to retire?
    Thanks!

You never know, someone might remember. What happens in detail when you try to use it, and HOW are you trying to use it?

  • PowerBook G4 using external HD for iTunes to new MacBook Pro

How can I move my iTunes library (all music, movies, ratings history, etc) from my old PowerBook G4 using an external hard drive to my new MacBook Pro?
Migration Assistant will not work due to incompatible versions of the software, and the Apple Store/Training Crew/Genuis Bar couldn't help me and told me to connect to the external HD, drag my music over and start a new library.  But my goal here is to not lose almost ten years of ratings, playlists and history.
The iTunes program files (Version 9.2.1) are on the old PowerBook G4, but all actual music files are on the external.  I know this isn't going to be easy, but how can I make this happen without starting over???
Thank you all for your help,
    EH

I think I know hte issue but not the immediate solution. Your external drive doesn't have the full library, just the media files. The library files which have all the things you see in hte iTunes browser are on your old computer so you don't see it when you plug the drive into your new computer.
You could try copying just the library files from the hard drive of your old computer to the same location on your new computer, then try opening hte external drive. This might work.
Incidentally, mpst people put their whole library, not just hte media files, on their external drives so it is all a neat package for moving between computers.  I don't think, though, that this will be a simple matter of copying the library files to the hard drive because the location references might not work

  • Water spill 5-6 months ago and still works good as new

    Hello lenovo users,
I spilt some water on my thinkpad edge 11 around 5-6 months ago, and it is still working as good as ever, absolutely no signs of any source of water at all, or water damage signs, The amount was not a lot.
    Should I be worried ?
Also, In addition to asking here, I asked teh local PC shop & the person advised me that there is probably no damage if after this long is still working as per usual, and I am very lucky.

    WwariosS wrote:
Yes you are lucky, I just spilled water on my T510, still in coma
that must suck, especially since the non thinkpad edge series are supposed to have drain holes.

  • I'm trying to migrate data from an old Powerbook G4 to a Macbook running 10.8 - new laptop can't find the target disk

Can anyone help me get a new(er) Macbook that's running Mountain Lion migrate data from an old PowerBook G4 running 10.4.x?
I've restarted the G4 holding down "T" and have the Firewire icon floating around its screen, started Migration Assistant on the Macbook, telling it to get data from a Time Machine back up or other disk, have Firewire cable connected to both laptops, continue and the Macbook is just endlessly "Looking for Other Computers"....
    Any ideas?
    Anyone?

Additionally, When I have the two laptops connected via Firewire, I do see the disk from which I'm trying to migrate data and can copy files, etc.
Not sure if this is helpful or not but thought I'd throw it out there.
