PowerBook G4 15" and 23" HD ACD usability issue

I am using a PowerBook G4 aluminium 15" with screen resolution 1280 x 854. At home this system is attached to an 23" HD Apple Cinema Display with resolution 1920x1600.
The issue I have is the need to always manually resize the windows when you switch from road use to home. I am normally not opening up program windows to cover the whole screen size on the ACD. So I have to manually set the program windows again every time I attach the PowerBook back to the ACD.
Is there no way that this could be done automatically? Meaning: that the screen windows open to a set window size when the system is used on the ACD?
This is not a fatal issue, but a very annoying one, stemming from the fact that the resolution of the PowerBook LCD and the external ACD are different. Sadly there is no PowerBook 15" with 1920x1600 resolution such as in the Windows world.
Any ideas?

The plus is that you and your wife will have basically the same product. Did you purchase Apple Care? Highly recommended by me. If I had it, it would have saved me a small fortune. This is a PowerBook forum so I'm not familiar with the problems with, or the utilities on the MacBook. So may I offer a few suggestions: if it is the same, it is imperative that you run disk utility, to verify and repair permissions and verify and repair disk, as well as the Apple Hardware Test, from your system disk, on a fairly consistent basis. A good third party application is Disk Warrior to keep your hard drive working optimally. Also, keep as much disk space as possible unused, 10% minimum, if not more. And back-up, back-up, back-up your hard drive. All the best!

I have a 17" powerbook, and drive my ACD 23" just dandy, I just got a 30" in hopes of getting a G5 soon. Can I drive my 30" with a limited amount of pixels and still use it, Like with a black area around it, cause I know the 30" is not compatable at full rezolution.

I have a Powerbook G3 Wallstreet and want to upgrade the Ram.

I recently bought an old Powerbook G3 Wallstreet. But it has some issues with booting up.
It doesn't boot up everytime... I can hear the start sound, but only sometimes the harddrive starts spinning.
So my idea was that maybe one ram module is broken...
But I don't know if the Ram I want to use is compatible with my Powerbook model.

And this is the one I want to insert. I took it out of an old Microsoft machine (gericom).
Maybe anyone can help me... or has an other solution for this booting problem.

The SO-DIMM that you want to use shouldn't cause any problems, even though it's the faster PC-133 SDRAM. It should downclock to your PowerBook's slower bus speed. Judging by the shadow (or lack thereof) under each memory module in your photos, the upper SO-DIMM is undoubtedly the original Apple-installed 4-chip, 64 MB module. The "Power Ram" appears to be a 16-chip, 128 MB module, while the Nanya is an 8-chip, 256 MB module. What this means is that each of these SO-DIMMs has a chip density that differs from the other two. The Power Ram's chips have the smallest density, the SEC's chips have slightly greater density, and the Nanya's chips have the greatest density. I always felt that optimal performance in those older Macs was achieved by attempting to match chip densities. I would never have used an original (8-chip) 32 MB DIMM with a newer (16-chip) 256 MB DIMM in one of my desktop or mini-tower G3s. While you'll have 64 or 128 MBs less of total memory installed, I'd prefer to use the Nanya SO-DIMM by itself. If you really need additional memory, you could install the original Apple (SEC) module, but I wouldn't.
As to whether a memory fault is causing the startup problem, I would be more inclined to think that the original (if it is) hard drive is becoming unreliable. A 15 year-old laptop drive has undoubtedly had a lot of use and in an enclosure that doesn't dissipate heat the way a fan-cooled desktop or mini-tower is capable of doing. When the PowerBook does manage to complete startup, how much installed memory is indicated when you select "About this Macintosh" from the Apple Menu — 192 MBs? If so, then both modules are detected and passed the Power-On Self-Test. If memory problems are detected during the POST, you should hear a beep or beeps at startup, indicating a problem.

Unfortunately Apple do not offer a download for mac OS X 10.5.8. They will only provide updates available for download. ( Normally you would do so once the OS is installed)
To do a fresh install of this software your going to need to buy a retail copy of the disk.
There are some vendors who do still stock the media disk, but they can be expensive.

If your Powerbook's serial number (do not post it here) starts with "W8" then the vertical lines are mostly likely due to a defect in the display itself. W8 is a factory code and, during the iMac G5 and PowerBook G4 timespan, that factory shipped thousands of units with the same defect. It cannot be fixed via software.
As all PowerBooks are now classed as "obsolete," an Apple Store will not work on it. They will look at it ands tell you it has vertical lines and that they cannot fix it. This Apple article shows Apple devices they curently considered obsolete:

It is possible that some Apple Authorized Service Providers (AASP) will still work on older computes but they cannot get neededparts from Apple. As this issue was so pervassive, it wil be hard for you or an AASP to find a used/pulled display that is not effected with the "W8 Curse."
Although I love the old PowerBooks, I would not even spent the money for disks, much less the US$150-400 it would cost to replace the display, even should one be available.
If you give us a rough idea of where you are in the world, we can suggest repair shops specializing in fixing older Mac notebooks, but be aware those resources may be rather scare outside North America.

sounds good, right? they both exhibit the following symptoms.
i'm using it in the headphone jack of my powerbook g4 15" and going out to a little mixer so i can hear system audio, itunes, etc. through my system. this longer cable is replacing a monster cable of the same kind (but shorter).
i'm getting absolutely HORRIBLE buzz when i plug it into the headphone port. if i jiggle it a bit i can get it to behave but only if it sits just right.
on a crt imac and an older titanium powerbook G4 the issue is much better. i still hear a line hum. i wouldn't want to record like this, but it's not a nightmare.
on an ipod plugged into the power adapter it works beautifully. however, i CAN get it to buzz horribly if i jiggle the plug as i insert/remove it.
eyeballing it with the monster cable tip, it looks exactly the same.
so on one hand, the monster cable works great in all uses.
the cablesforless cable works terribly on the powerbook but nowhere else.
now here's a clue: the powerbook G4 has combination analog/digital input and analog/digital output jacks. i haven't been able to repeat it reliably, but the cablesforless cable seems to be able to trigger the digital interface part, as evidenced by a red light shooting out of the port.
unplugging the powerbook totally removes the buzz.
i get the buzz when this cable is in EITHER the input or output jack.
tried a different power supply in a different jack in the same room... same results both ports (slightly different tone to the buzz)
if i remove the little mixer and plug the 1/4" cable ends into two inputs on a practice amp, i get the same issue.
finally, i got another digital audio powerbook g4 15" and the connection seems to be slightly more reliable, but still problematic.

Further, audio and video support are part of the recently-approved EPUB3, which the release notes for ADE 1.8 explicitly say is not yet fully supported. Basically, it sounds like you're trying to do things that ADE isn't supposed to support yet, and in a way it is unlikely to ever support (since ADE is known to be pretty conformant to the EPUB standards, it's very likely it will support the EPUB3 version of doing things rather than the hackery I've seen for Apple's reader).

Open Media Encoder and add your Sequences:
File > Add Premiere Pro Sequence
Navigate to your Premiere Project and select it in the list.
You can then select multiple Sequences from the Project (Ctrl+Click)
and load them all at once into Media Encoder and apply
the same encoding preset to all Sequences at the same time.

The only way to install OS 9.2.2 is using the install CD/DVD that came with the Mac, since these are special versions of OS 9.2.2.
If you just want to run classic mode, copy the System Folder from another Mac that has OS 9.1 (or better with 9.2.1 or 9.2.2) installed. A USB thumb dive works great for this. Transfer the folder to your Mac. It won't interfere with your OS X system which is in a folder titled System.

Sony Xperia Z experiences few usability issues after updating to latest software

Recently I upgraded my Sony Xperia Z phone (see snapshot for current upgraded system info)
After this upgarde I am facing few usability issues like ease of keyboard use
I lost all saved words from disctionary, also punctuations symbols bar at top of keyboard is missing (see image)
When I enter any wrong word and I want to delete/modify entered word.. now it deletes character by character instead of whole word (earlier behavior)
What is the solution to get that top symbols bar in keyboard?

Mail usability issue -- message list positioning

I'm loving the iPad, but noticed a slight usability issue while reading my email today. Would be great if Apple would consider changing it in future updates.
Whenever I open the mail app, the right pane shows the most recent message I had open last time I was using it (that's good), but the left pane scrolls down and shows that message hilighted. I would prefer if the left pane stayed at the top of the list.
Consider the following scenario:
1) I go home from work at 5:00PM and sit down to play with my iPad.
2) I hear that familiar tone letting me know that I just got an email from my work account.
3) Open up the email, lament my co-worker's stupidity, go back to playing some video games.
4) The next day I get several hundred emails, answer them on my desktop email client.
5) Go home at 5:00 to play with my iPad.
6) New email
*7) have to scroll through all those emails I got during the day before I can select the new one.*
It's a minor annoyance, but still an annoyance.

Thanks for the tip. I never saw Rebuild before in the menu.
So I selected the mailbox and hit Rebuild. It "blinked" and refreshed, took about 5 seconds--I thought it would take longer.
At any rate, no change. It's still happening.
Any other ideas?

Hello, I have done a lot of development in PowerBuilder, Delphi, C++, but only spent a year or 2 (off & on) in Java. I downloaded Creator about 2 weeks ago and was impressed with its capabilities. That said, here are my main issues:
1) Ide Sluggish (always) and unstable (after extended use). I Sometimes have to stop & restart the server and even sometimes have to reboot to get it to deploy simple projects. Of course I am deploying often to see & test my changes. While you have the 30 min compile time of a large C++ project beat, it is far more difficult to do rapid prototyping in Creator than in PowerBuilder or Delphi. Even for small projects Creator is comparatively slow to the outdated C++ compiler which compiles the same header 5 times just for fun (actually its because I have not optimized the pre-compiled headers, but who has time for that in a small project anayway). I only type about 30 words/min and any IDE on a pentium based pc should be able to keep up. I have to wait so long for popup help, I could almost look it up in my browser faster. Also, my cpu is rarely above 20% when I have an hour glass in Creator and my entire PC is sluggish. I have 512Mb of memory on Windows XP and a 2.0Ghz CPU. Why should I have to wait 3-5 seconds changing pages in creator with only about 5 pages loaded?
2) Fragments, What a great Idea, most web pages have common headers and footers. Dream weaver & Front Page all have similar concepts. But then I spent a day trying to figure out how to show/hide buttons depending on what page I was on (what a pain!) I need a way to access any component on the header just like it was on the page so if button1 is on a fragment called myHeader I should be able to do MyHeader.button1.rendered = false; or whatever on Page1. Of course you could argue the object oriented approach is a "smart" header object, but how smart is it really with a big case statement for a brain.
Also try putting about 5 buttons on the header and including that header on 6 pages and then go to the navigation window and try to link it up and its a big mess. I always want the Home button to go to the home page so why should I have to do that 6 times. How about showing me the header fragment in the navigation pane and allowing me to make static links from there as well as from each page. Of course I still need to be able to retain other dynamic behavior such as make the logon button link to the Logon or the logout page depending if the user is logged in or out.
3) I need to be able to connect to ODBC data sources as there are no JDBC drivers for some databases like (DBISAM, NexusDB, Etc.) I know this is outside the IDE realm, but an updated ODBC-JDBC Bridge would be greatly appreciated. Of course I'm the guy with clients who always want to call some windows dll that they created from Java on a Unix box, but the ODBC support does not seem that unreasonable and I believe there are many others connecting to legacy systems that would benefit from this.

Two Fx 4 windows open at the same time causes usability issues

When I load two instances of Firefox, I get multiple issues with the second instance usability, display, and hot keys.
The issues are as follows:
# Menubar/Toolbar appear differently
# Back/Forward buttons do not work
# F-Keys no longer Function
# Favicons show old, cached icons
Please see screen grab of my two monitors with two instances of Fx 4 open, but the I played with my toolbar settings to get it to look somewhat ok.

This issue was not happening with Fx 3.x.x.
I am using a custom Persona, but I have changed the Persona a few times and I still get the same result.
I've removed all incompatible extensions and upgraded all the ones that needed upgrading.
Not sure what the issue is here, but would love to troubleshoot it down if possible. Please let me know if any other info is required!

Exact same issue here. Also, the add-on manger will not launch.
I thought it might be an add-on causing these issues, but only one out of my ten or so addons work in FF4, and I disabled it with no success.
This is a huge issue for me. I attempted to uninstall FF4 and go back to FF3 but I can't find an install file for FF3.

Usability issues

For the past couple of weeks I am trying to give Aperture a chance to replace iPhoto... I have a quite large collection of pictures, and iPhoto is simply getting too slow to cope with it (yes, yes, i did library rebuild etc..).
I love editing features of Aperture 3, but have quite serious usability issues with it. First of all it really doesn't look or feel like Apple application. But anyway...
My biggest problem is with the way Aperture is organizing pictures. I mean - by default, newly imported pictures are going to the end of project list , there is no way of automatically sorting projects by date (well, i can in "Library", but not in the actual project list on the left). Also, as a result, my entire library is sorted alphabetically by the name of the event rather than by date. It looks like the app missing the most basic organization feature there is. Or am I missing something?

Yes. At the risk of a mildly "wise" answer, you need a quick hour with the manual (its online) or the Apple Aperture Tutorial.
Aperture can organize your images sixteen ways to Sunday, and will even let you arrange some one way and the rest another. And date order is always there as one of the factory smart albums.
Read the book and you will be very happy!
Or you can do what some of us dinosaurs do; begin the name of each Project with the date, as in "20100725 - Trip to Pub."
