Powerbook G4 17" 1 GHZ Runs on Charged Battery Only

I replaced the power adapter, and battery, reset the PMU. When I plug in the adapter, it turns orange, but the battery indicator does not show any of the LED's blinking. When I remove the battery, and plug in the adapter, it turns green, but will not power the unit on. When I press the power button for 5 seconds, I can hear the hard drive spin down.
If I charge the battery on another powerbook, then switch batteries after it's charged, it will run just fine off that charged battery. The power adapter ring glows orange, and the onscreen battery indicates charging, but no leds are blinking on the battery pack.
Logic Board Problems?

The problem may be with the port itself. In a lot of powerbooks it is a DC-in board that can be replaced. Have you noticed if the tip of the connector on the old power adapter is still intact? I have seen the tips of the connecters break off in the port causing all sorts of problems. If that is intact then it will either be the DC-in board or the logic board.

  • PB doesn't always start up/won't run on charged battery

I have a 15" aluminum PowerBook that I've slowly been bringing back to life after it had a full mug of coffee dumped into it. I cleaned everything out and it's working again, for the most part. However, there are a couple of unresolved problems. The biggest is the computer doesn't always start up. I've also noticed that it won't run on the battery alone, even though the battery is fully charged. When unplugging the computer, the screen goes dark but the computer is still making noise -- it's running to some extent. Any pointers on how to get things running again properly would be greatly appreciated.

If you're able to charge the battery while it's in the computer, and pushing the button on the back of the battery shows all the LEDs lighting up, that suggests that you have a logic board problem. There are only 4 components to the charging circuit: power adapter, DC-in card, battery, and logic board. If what you described is that you can hook the power adapter up and charge the battery completely in the computer, the only component left is the logic board.
While there aren't any tests I've found to test the charging circuit, have you run the Apple hardware test or either of the TechTool programs to test the system? Insert your original OS X disk that says 'AHT Version x.x' in small print on the label. Reboot holding the option key down, choose the Apple hardware test, and when prompted choose the extended test. Does that give you any errors?

  • Macbook won't run off charged battery

My battery indicators on screen and underneath the Macbook show maximum charge but when I remove the power adaptor, it dies.
This started to happen a few days ago after a couple of years with zero problems. I tried re-setting the SMC but it makes no difference. As the battery is charged, it seems unlikely just changing it will help.
    Any ideas please?

From the information you have posted, there is no obvious reason why your battery should be failing or why your MacBook is not working unplugged.
However, the first line of attack for any battery problem is to reset the SMC. Follow the instructions here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1411
If that does not address your issue, you may need to call AppleCare or visit an Apple store.

  • After full charge battery only shows 4 hours.

Have the brand new 13 inch, and the battery is only showing 4 hours left after a full charge.
    Thoughts?

How many programs do you have running in the background?
What is the backlight level set to?
    Is bluetooth turned on?
Is the keyboard backlight turned on?
    Is Airport turned on?
Battery life is directly related to the load that you put on the cpu.

  • T41 won't run on AC only or with fully charged battery

I just got a used T41 laptop and have a weird problem.  It runs fine on battery only or with a partially charged battery.  But when I remove the battery and try to run on AC only, I get the "charger removed beep and screen flash warning" over and over again.  The same thing happens when the battery is installed and reaches full charge.  As it approaches full charge, I'll get the warning once in awhile.  But once it reaches full charge, or with the battery removed, it happens intermittently, every few seconds.
If I turn off the "Power Control" alarm in the BIOS, I don't get the beeps but the screen still flashes.  Also, the alarms start before the OS is loaded.  They occur even at the first screen where it allows you to press the IBM Access button.  It seems to be some sort of "over voltage" alarm.  I have Grub installed for dual booting XP and Linux and while Grub menu is displayed and I turn the LCD brightness up and down, the alarm frequency increases as I decrease the brightness.
As it stands, I can only use the computer by unplugging the AC when the battery reaches about 90% charge, running on battery only till it drops to about 20%, and then plugging the AC back in.  Frustrating!!!

Thank you for the information that does me no good at all.  I only paid $75 for the laptop and it will allow me to sell a good working Acer laptop for much more money.  I can put up with the inconvenience with my personal laptop.  In fact, it works quite well with just a 12v battery connected to the AC connector.  With only 12v applied, instead of 16v, the over voltage sensor doesn't kick in.  There are always several approaches to any problem and I was hoping someone here in the forum had one more elegant than mine.  If not, I can live with mine.  No way is replacing the MB a solution.
    Thanks anyway
    Lew

  • Won't charge, battery good

My Powerbook will not charge the battery while the computer is in use. If I put the Powerbook in sleep mode, or turn it off, then it WILL charge the battery, but slowly.
It's not a bad battery, because if I take the battery to a friend's powerbook and charge it there, it works, the other powerbook charges it normally. If I disconnect AC, my computer will run off the charged battery.
If I let it charge overnight, then run it off AC, then I can use the Powerbook all day, and it works, but the battery very slowly discharges. It will not charge the battery, while in use.
I thought it might be the DC in board, so I replaced that, but I still have the same problem.
I've tried a different AC adaptor, and get the same problem.
Has anyone see this before? Do you have any ideas on what this could be, or how to fix it? I assume I could replace the logic board (I'm guessing is the problem) but I'm more likely to live with it, and just make sure I charge it every night.
    It's G4 Powerbook, Aluminum, 1.5 Ghz
    Thank you,
    Bill

There are only 4 components in the charging circuit ... the power adapter, the DC-in card, the battery, and logic board. You've indicated confidence in 3 of the 4, and from how you've tested that sounds good. So I'd agree your logic board is acting up. Cheapest fix, beyond living with it, may be to replace the board yourself, or send it to the Apple depot thru your local Apple store, around $325 if everything else is in reasonable shape.

  • MP3 Player (Zen Micro)won't recognize fully charged battery and won't recognize compu

    Hi All,
Just wondering if anyone has any ideas for me. I can not download the new firmware until I can get the computer to stay connected to the MP3 Player long enough. The only way I can use the MP3 Player is if it is plugged into the wall. Any ideas of why the MP3 Player will not recognize the fully charged battery?
    Thank you?
    Kukmeri?

Is it possible that your battery might be worn out or defecti've? If a fully charged battery only lasts a very short period, there would either be a problem with the player cutting off at the incorrect voltage or the battery itself is not capable of holding much of a charge.

  • Can I run OS 10.2 on a PowerBook G4 1.67 GHz?

I need to use an old OS9 application but can't run it on my MacBook Pro. So I got my old PowerBook G4 out, which is running OS 10.5.8 and OS 9.2 on it. It appears 10.5.8 won't run OS9. So I tried to do a clean install of 10.2 from a PowerBook G4 software install disk...although I'm not sure if this disk is for the 1.67 GHz or my even older PowerBook G4 Titanium.
The long and short of it is that the PB G4 1.67 GHz won't read the OS 10.2 system install disk - using the C key on restart.
Does anyone have any ideas how I can backward install to OS 10.2?
    Regards

Furthermore, you have to find the correct Powerbook G4 restore discs to restore 10.3.7 through 10.4.2 onto a partition or Firewire hard drive, and then use the Mac OS 9 restore installer from those discs to install 9 so Classic can run in the background on 10.3.7 through 10.4.11. Starting with 10.5 Classic could not run. Only a very few Powerbook G4s had boot access to Mac OS 9 while 10.5 was installed:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1379979
The rest required 10.4.11 or less to be installed on a Firewire hard drive or Partition, and 9 restored from the prebundled discs that came with the Mac in question. And for those only 9 as a Classic environment without most of the drivers would run.
    See my FAQ*:
    http://www.macmaps.com/macosxnative.html
    for possible alternatives.

  • My experience with Tiger/new Powerbook 15", 1.67 ghz

Apple proclaims "Mac OS X v10.4 Tiger. The world’s most advanced operating system."
Well, that hasn't been the case in my experience.
I bought a new 15 Powerbook HR, 1.67 ghz, 1.5 gb ram, 80gb hd on 11/4/05 (from MacMall). At this point I have about 20gb free.
Problems I have noticed with it/OSX.(Most have been fixed by an archive and install done a few weeks ago.) Here's my trial by fire.
    In chronological order
    - trackpad lags
    - many icons not correct after using Migration Assistant.
    - some icons open up the wrong applications
    - window resize button on Finder, and some app windows, doesn't open window to full screen. Also doesn't open window so that scroll bars disappear.
    - dragging a file up or down a window in list view doesn't always make the window scroll up or down when I go up or down to the top or bottom edges. When they do move, it races. Smooth scrolling has no effect.
    - CDr recorded on a machine with OSX 10.3.9 shows up as a recordable CD!
    - screen dims when I disconnect power supply
-Network option from the Go menu does nothing.
    - Doing a Get Info on a html file has Internet Explorer as the app to open when the files have Mozilla icons
    - icon for some apps have wrong application logo on them
    - screen dims and brightens rapidly, disconcertingly in low light. I turn off the ambient light adjustment on the monitors control panel. This is poorly implemented. Having the keys light up is nice though.
    - can't reset F7 key to take pictures of screen. (I eventually am able to do it.)
    - the clicker gives me a sharp pain in my arm from the second day of use. This has gotten better now but I was worried I might be getting carpal tunnel/repetitive stress injury. (This happened when I got my new Powerbook Firewire too, eventually going away.) The clickers are too stiff when new.
    - I call Applecare. They don't have my registration information I gave them when I signed up on the web. We reset the Power Manger.
    - Quicktime movies have no sound. I later throw out the LAME stuff (Component and Framework) and get sound back.
    - I go to Genius at Apple Store. They tell me I am using a non-native resolution, that is why I am having screen dimming. (Wrong. It was the ambient light control.) They also say whatever software I have installed is likely to be causing most of the other problems.
    - I get Finder freeze #1
    - Preview does not animate gifs. It did with 10.3.9.
-System sounds do not work. Upon reboot they do. Flakey.
    - some finder windows are not opening up with the item count in list view.
    -desktop gets rearranged
-occasionally keyboard turns letters into numbers as if number lock is on. It isn't. The it will stop working altogether. Rebooting cures this. (Happens twice before I call AppleCare.)
    - call AppleCare. They have my old address when I bought the Powerbook! I get registered again.I cannot install GarageBand, which I threw out thinking I didn't need it, because the install DVDs that came with my machine have an error reading the software only package. They will send me a new install disk #1.
    - scrolling is not smooth, races.
    - I notice the memory door has 3 out of the 4 screws loose. I tighten them. The battery door feels a little loose too but that is unfixable.
    - keyboard doesn't respond #3
    - I call AppleCare. They have the wrong address still in their database!
-eject DVD does not work. (It works all other times.)
    - system freeze #2
    - kernal panic #1
    - Call AppleCare. My TechTool Deluxe CD will not boot. I ask for a replacement. (I can't believe they are still using TechTool Deluxe. I remember what a hassle it was trying to get a working disc with my Powerbook Firewire.
    - keyboard types wrong characters #4
-Print preview does not work. (it does all other times.)
-Preference for video capture program (BTV) is not remembered
    - audio is only heard when BTV is running (since fixed.)
    - system freeze #3
    - keyboard stops working #5
    - I call Apple Care. We zap P-ram 3X.
    - file sizes incorrect in list view. Have to open window a second time to get correct info.
    - install DVD #1 arrives. It is defective.
    - system freeze #4
    - I update to 10.4.4. I hope this will cure the problems. Nope.
    - Help doesn't work.
    - Battery firmware update process works but isn't smooth. It crashes "unexpectedly" as I check to make sure it is really done. (It kept telling me I needed to do it.)
    - Help works.
    - boot takes forever after 10.4.4 update.
    - battery firmware update wants to run again.
    - file size is wrong in finder list view windows.
    - keyboard stops working #6
    - fan stops yet processor is still VERY busy as I am calibrating battery. Charge is about 5%.
    - I quit IMovie, It then says it quit "unexpectedly". (This happens with other apps still.)
    - I have to use power key to wake it from sleep, as I calibrate battery.
    - keyboard problem #7
    - system freeze # 5
    - text editing in iDVD is very buggy. Cursor is impossible to see against background with many themes. There is no way to increase cursor size.
    - AppleCare says they have sent TechTool Deluxe CD. I haven't gotten it yet.
    - I receive install disk #1. 2 actually. I install software bundle only. It works! I also reinstall CPU help files. Help still doesn't work.
    - I archive and install. (It installs 10.4.2 so I update to 10.4.4), Help doesn't work.
    - Help works without my having done anything. OK.
    - I repair a gazillion permissions. (funny how when you install the system software the permissions then need to be repaired. You would think the system would know to set the permissions correctly upon installation.
    - I notice the order of the right hand menu items has changed (clock, keyboard setup, OS 9 icon...)
    - file sizes wrong in list view
    - BTV has audio loop at times. (See thread on Topic "New Powerbook Audio Stutter / Looping / Echo problem in Using your PowerBook G4 15-inch Aluminum forum.)
    - keyboard problem #8
    - keyboard problem #9
    - I call AppleCare. TechTool Deluxe CD has still not arrived. We discuss other problems. I get hung up on.
    -keyboard problem #10
    - I go to Apple Store. Talk to the genius. He tells me the system software is "a house of cards", adding other software can cause unpredictable results. He zaps P-ram 3x, does something in open firmware. Recommends a clean install. I think about it and later decide not to.
    - I lose system sounds after I install USBVison video capture driver for Tiger. I eventually get it back.
    - I repair LOTS of permissions.
    - The fan starts to make bad noise.
    - system freeze $6
    - I do a Get Info on a file I making with BTV. The OS tells me it is 11GB. I stop the recording and then I check again. It says it is 1.5 gb.
-iChat won't open. It starts, according to Activity Monitor, runs for about two seconds and then disappears.
    - Network, under the Go menu, does nothing.
    - I call AppleCare.
    - I notice cursor disappears in Firefox.
    - Yahoo IM icon keeps getting moved. All the icons it is next to are spaced about the same but this one keeps getting moved.
    - I Stuff some stuff. The fan keeps running, it is still hot after I am finished. I have to reboot to get things back to normal.
    - Some icons for PING files on my desktop have changed from having Preview icons to Quicktime icons. I use Get Info to change them back from Picture Viewer (OS 9!)
    - the fan comes on with only my normal apps running (Eudora, Firefox, Yahoo IM)
Ok, that is about all up 'til now. I still haven't gotten my TechTool Deluxe CD but need to give that a few more days. I now have 8 install DVDs. (Another install #1 came yesterday, making a total of 6 #1, and 2 #2s) The address on the invoices are finally correct, most had the wrong town but the right zip code which I had corrected many times.
The problems that are still recurring are the keyboard problem, applications still sometimes crash "unexpectedly" even though I am quitting them, the file sizes are not right the first time around in finder list view windows. Most everything else was cured by the archive and install. Little weirdnesses still crop up though. I am not sure if the echo problem has been fixed. (Mac OS) Help is still slow to appear.
Thanks for bearing with me. I do hope things get smoother in the future. I have been using Macs for about 10 years now, starting with a used SE and 7.something, going to a refurbished LC 580 and 7.5.5, a new Powerbook Firewire and 9.2.2. I have also used 10.3.9 which seemed to be a lot more stable than 10.4.
    Cheers,
    John L

If it was me I would backup to DVD/ External HD if you have and erase / reinstall OSX.
Update all and once you are finished without the user folder / any of your files on torture the Pbook to see if this happens again.
This likely will be able to give you an idea about hardware or software problems.
If all is well , likely not then copy "COPY" over from the backup you "ONLY COPY" documents, music, Photo's, desktop stuff and also place programs back in Applications folder.
The reason for the above is that in the /user/"you"/library folder it stores the settings for Icon's, prefferences to programs and some other useless stuff + E-mails for either Mac Mail and or Microrubish Entorture "entourage" depending on what you have or used also Itunes prefs.
Once this is copied leave the "/user/you/library" stuff alone and see how it runs.
App's/programs will ask to have it's preferences set again as if /when you have installed it for the first time.
Likely most of the issues if software was in the/becuase of the settings in "/user/you/library".
If this solves a lot of problems the go with care and copy the "E-MAIL +/OR ENTORUTE/ENTOURAGE + ITUNES" to the same place as where they came from but obviously in /user/you/library/ subfolders etc. same subfolders.
For Entorture search for a file called "database" as this holds all the e-mail for entourage and by copying it, when you next open Entorture it will pick-up all emails + adresses etc like it was never moved also in the same spot as it was in the new instalation / subfolders etc..
If all this fails and you as close to what I reccomended here, there is then still some issues then likely it is hardware related.
How do I know this : Had for 5 times in 365 days had my Pbook in for repair so I have had to about 120+ times had to reinstall OSX 10.3.9 and/or Tiger.
I hope this helps as for hardware I am buying Alienware or Extreme as they can upgrade the cpuvideobasically all else except the motherboard " amd opteron 64 dualcore + Nvidia fx quadro 1400 + 1 or 2 hd's + 1/2 dvd's etc. etc. $2500"

  • Powerbook will not run off of battery.

My 15in powerbook g4 (1.67 ghz) will not run off of its battery even though it is recognized and fully charged. Everything is fine when it is plugged in. The battery charges and everything else works until I unplug the computer. Then it just shuts off. I am not sure if this is related but recently it was waking from sleep by itself and even booting up by itself. I checked wake schedules, and nothing was set for automatic wake. I tried resetting the power management, but that did not work either. Now nothing is working and it won't even start without the power adapter.

    Thanks for responding.
iStat says that my battery has gone through 392 charges. I'm surprised it even lasted this long. It seems to be working now, but it looks like it is losing its reliability and will probably completely stop functioning pretty soon. Money is tight right now so until that day I guess I will keep this one. Thanks.

  • How can I use a USB 3.0 HDD with PowerBook G4 12" 1 Ghz OS 10.4.11?

Is it possible to use a USB 3.0 HDD with PowerBook G4 12" 1 Ghz OS 10.4.11? I'm using a HDD with a USB 3.0 tyo 2.0 cable that came with the drive, but it has proven to be extremely unreliable...cloned my system and backed numerous files to 3 partitions on the 1 TB drive, now I can no longer access the drive at all. None off my drive utilities will even show the volumes (TechToolPro, Disk Utility, Disk Warrior, or DataRx). If I plug it into a Windows machine running Windows 7, the drive appears, and is functioning perfectly. I'd just really like to use it with my PB G4, if at all possible...thanks for the help folks...StudioBill

You need drivers and adaptors which I doubt will work with a G4 Powerbook.

  • Severe performance problems with JSC2 on PowerBook G4 1.5 GHz

    Help!
I've reached my wits' end trying to figure out how to get JSC2 to work without pausing for 2-6 minutes per click, right-click, drag, keystroke, etc.! I'm using a PowerBook G4 1.5 GHz (with 1.25 GB RAM and Mac OSX 10.3.9), and earlier, when I was building out projects, the lag time between clicks, typing, etc. would go from a split-second, to a few seconds, then now to minutes...
Originally, I thought that forcing JSC2 to rebuild the user profile every so often would help, and getting the Sun App Server to undeploy all of its web apps every so often would help, but even that is no longer working. It seems that just starting JSC2 without a user profile (thereby forcing it to create a new, blank one) is pretty much the only time it seems to function without significant lag time or freezing...
When I run the Mac's Activity Monitor, what seems to be showing up between user actions (clicks, typing, etc.) is ~ 95-100% CPU utilization. Earlier, I was thinking that perhaps the complexity of my Web apps was causing the problem, but that would mean that I can't create moderately sized apps (with a few rowsets in the SessionBean1, for instance). What strikes me as a bit odd is t hat sometimes, during the high CPU utilization periods, there is little or no disk activity.
I tried adjusting the settings in etc/creator.conf, but it doesn't seem to matter; the machine will gobble up all the memory (physical + virtual) very quickly.
Is there something I'm missing, or some sort of tuning that I need to do? Is there some sort of GC behavior that is wreaking havoc on my PB? Should be removing entries from the etc/creator.conf file that might help?

Well, I've tried stuff on the two threads you suggested, but still the same issue...
Anyway, I used the Stack Trace WebStart tool to create the data below during one of the pauses (a relatively short pause):

  • Updated to OS 10.7.3; fan runs constantly and battery life dropped to under 2 hours when 100% charged. How do I get back to 10.7.2, I don't have a backup prior to this upgrade. This is a newer Macbook Pro 13", no modifications.

Help! This new version of Lion is making me miserable. The fan runs constantly, the computer is hot and battery life has dropped to under 2 hours on a fully charged battery. I updated yesterday, nothing but misery today. Even running the mail program alone make the fan run like I have everything open. Using Pages, iPhoto, and iTunes simultaneously makes the computer blistering hot.Yesterday, I could use all three without any trouble. Any suggestions to either jettison 10.7.3 or how to fix without any expense? I haven't modified this computer at all, it is as it came from the box in August 2011: 2.3 GHz Intel Core i5, 4GB 1333 Mhz DDR3.

I updated to Lion 10.7.3 and started noticing my fans running on high all the time and my battery would drain 2-3x faster.  I was going to take my computer into an Apple store until I found this thread.  I did the SMC reset by shutting down my computer, plugging it in, and then pushing down shift+control+option while also pushing down the power button.  Nothing happens on the screen and the computer did not turn on.  I then released all the buttons at once after holding them down for 10 seconds.
After that, I simply turned my computer back on and everything seems to be working fine.  The  fans are not blasting anymore.  I have a newer MacBook Pro where I can't access my batteries.  The SMC reset may differ for other types of laptops.

  • Powerbook won't run off of battery - requires PMU reset to power up with AC

Like everyone else posting here, my powerbook won't run from the battery. I have two batteries, one that came with the computer 3 - 4 years ago and a newer one that I purchased about 1 year ago. When I am plugged into AC using iStat Nano the newer battery shows cycles 173, health 89%. The older battery show cycles 0 and health 100% (go figure!). Both batteries just say 'calculating' on the tool bar battery meter. The light around the AC adapter plug always shows green as if the batteries are fully charged.
Here is where my post differs from the others. Once I shut down the computer I can't power it up again with reseting the PMU. I've tried reseting NVRAM and deleting and re-establishing the powermanagement plist as suggested elsewhere on this forum to no avail.
Is the PMU something that can be replaced? How is it related to DC-IN? I've read elsewhere here that is another problem that could cause these symptoms. Has anyone had these two components repaired and did it fix the problem? How much did it cost?
Thanks in advance for any information you can give men.

I had the same experience. I have 10.4.10 on the cloned drive but the battery is still not charging. I decided to take a closer look at the battery updater instructions and discovered that even though I am at 10.4.11 on my Powerbook the BatteryUpdater.bundle was at revision 1.1.3 and hadn't been updated since Jan 6, 2006. So I downloaded the BatteryUpdate that is posted at the top of this forum and installed it. It has made no difference in the operation of the computer. The AC adapter still isn't charging the battery although the green ring light is on which usually indicates the battery is charged. furthermore, when I go back and look at the date and version number on the BatteryUpdater.bundle they haven't changed. Who knows what the update actually changed! There is no mention of it running in the software update log. My system profiler says:
    The battery is installed
    Full charge Capacity 3890
    Remaining Capacity 0
    Cycle Count 173
AC adapter cannot charge battery: YES
By the way, my battery is a replacement battery.
I have just about exhausted all my option other than taking it into an Apple repair store and I'm not sure at this point I want to give Apple any more of my money. I am going to live with it the way it is for a while in the hopes that someone will post a fix for the problem. Good luck with your investigation. If you find out anything else please post it here as I will check back on a regular basis. If I find out anything else I will do the same. Nice working with you.
