Powerbook G4 17" Harddrive not appearing in anything...logic board? or othe

I've pulled it, tested it in another system, as well as in external enclosures. The drive is ok and the system can boot off Firewire and CD, but in a few disk utility programs like apple's and disk warrior, or df -H from terminal, the harddrive does not appear.
Is this logic board or ribbon? Boot gives folder with ? and finder logo if trying to boot to hard drive. Tested with 100GB original and a brand new fresh 160GB which both work on other systems.
A friend who works at apple store ran ASD 2.5.8 and it tested all OK.

fpc:
I agree with BGreg. It is either the ATA ribbon cable, or the ATA Controller on the logic board. The ribbon cable is much easier to test by swapping it out. However, if it is not the ribbon cable you will be out about $40 (ifixit). The logic board is another issue. You would be better advised to run it off a 2.5" drive in an external FW enclosure. It is not the ideal solution, but it does afford portability as the drive can be powered off firewire. Otherwise you can seek the services of a reputable repair outfit like DT&T Computer Services.

  • Hard drive in Pismo not recognized; is my logic board fried?

Sorry to post another Pismo question so soon, but the Powerbook has me baffled again. Initially, the G3 laptop (actually it is a G4 as I put in the Newer upgrade long ago) had kernel panics and wouldn't boot completely even on the install disks. I tracked that down to bad memory but before I concluded that it was RAM at the source of my troubles, I thought that the problem was a bad hard drive ribbon and connector. I ordered the hard drive cage/ribbon and received it today. In the interim I have been running the Pismo via a firewire drive (and it runs fine), so I took the drive out of its firewire enclosure, put it in the cage, connected the ribbon and installed it in the computer. Flashing question mark on the screen. I removed it and made sure the ribbon was securely attached to both drive and mother board, then attempted to boot up again. Flashing question mark (which I know means no available boot drive). I started up using the install disk, ran disk utility and no drive other than the install disk showed up. I even tried the old cage and ribbon; flashing question mark.
My mind says there are only two possible causes: either the new ribbon/cage is faulty or my logic board is somehow fried, not allowing the disk attached to the ribbon to connect. Am I missing something? Right now I'm about resigned to just using it via a firewire drive, but the challenge to figure out the problem still spurs me, so I come to this great forum seeking any wisdom. Could the problem be anything else than a bad logic board (assuming the new ribbon is OK)? All help is appreciated.
    Thanks, Will

Hey there. I'm trying to draw back my G3-era knowledge but it's taking me a while!
I can't remember if you can access Apple System Profiler from the 10.4 install disk, but if you can, do so with the internal hard drive connected and see what it says for the ATA section.
PowerBook G3s are wonderful computers. I still have mine around although I finally retired it from my desk a while back (it was not as my main computer of course, but usually was used for IRC or Facebook or something like that) because my mom entered the computer world when someone gave her an iMac G3 with 333 whopping MHz! I gave her the RAM modules out of my Wallstreet G3 to get her from 64 to 512 MB and imaged my drive onto hers (to keep from having to redo the lovely XPostFacto 10.4 install) and she used it for around a year, happily, before upgrading to a MacBook Pro. Now that she's not using the iMac, I could steal my RAM (and that 333 MHz CPU card, heh mine's only a 266!) back. :-P
I had one of those SCSI adaptors that turned the odd square plug (can't remember what it was called now) into a normal 25 pin. I left it connected all the time because the screen hinge had failed and it kept the screen at a usable angle. Some may call it "ghetto," but I prefer the term improvisational usage technique.
Anyway, forgive my going offtopic. Lets just hope we can get yours running again!

  • Macbook Pro not working with replacement logic board

Hello everyone! About two months ago, someone spilled tea over my macbook pro. Upon taking it to the Apple store the representative told me that it would cost me over $1,000 to repair it and that I would be better off getting a new one (I know most of you have heard that many times). I inspected the Macbook and I realized that when I tried turning it on the keyboard would not light up and, but the sleep light was on. Furthermore, I heard the hard drive and the fans spinning. The tea only spilled on the right side of the Macbook so I figured that would help me narrow down the issue. The apple representative told me that I needed to replace the logic board so I went and bought a replacement one that was the same model. Before I screwed all the pieces back in, I wanted to try it out and see if it would turn on. Unfortunately I still have the same problem. It seems that the logic board is not the problem, but I am not sure what it might be. I'm pretty sure the CD/DVD drive is damaged, but I don't see why that would prevent the Macbook from turning on. I did a little research and I notice that most people test the graphics card to see if it is working, but I don't know how to do that. I have an older Macbook Pro, the motherboard is model 820-1993-A and I believe the model of the Macbook is A1150. Please help, this macbook was a gift and I don't want to throw it out!

Well I would like to find out what the piece is that is causing me the problem so that I could replace it! I already replaced the most expensive piece and the hard drive seems to be working fine so it doesn't leave many things. I just would like to know how I would be able to check to see if the video card is damaged.

  • PCMCIA card problem; bus not working -- connection to logic board was loose

The PCMCIA WiFi adapter on my good ol' TiBook recently stopped working all of a sudden. (OS X wasn't automatically recognizing the adapter as it used to, and the power LED on the card itself wasn't lighting up.) I thought the adapter itself was broken, but discovered the problem was with the slot itself after trying a brand new adapter in the slot.
I came across this post by user "eww" that ended up fixing the problem in less than a minute. As eww had said:
...Check to make sure your PCMCIA card cage's connection to the logic board hasn't worked loose, as they sometimes do. Release the keyboard (instructions are in your owner's manual) and flip it gently back onto the wrist rest. Look for a brown tab under the normal position of the D and X keys. That's the card cage's connector to the logic board. Press it down firmly; if it moves or clicks at all, it was loose and probably not making good contact. Test again after returning the keyboard to its place.
This worked perfectly for me. I'm posting it here so hopefully it can benefit someone else with the same problem I had. Thank you, eww!

Hi, Mihira. You're quite welcome. It's always nice to hear that an old post continues to be useful.

  • NVIDIA issue: Apple not agreeing to replace logic board

    Hi,
    I have a 15" MBP purchased in Oct 2007.
    This is what happened.
Watching videos, screen starts flickering, Then hanged. So rebooted manually. Happened 3-4 times and after that system won't boot.
Display comes, sound comes and then comes to gray screen of death.
Took it to ASP, guy says software issue and asks me to repair. I go home run the diagnostic test and get the error:
    4VDC/1/40000003: VideoController.
Googled and found out about the NVDIA 8600M graphics processor issue.
Went back to ASP very happy that problem occurred with just 2 months remaining for the 4 yr warranty.
    Then begins my ordeal.
ASP says because of the kernel panic, they cannot run any diagnostic test to confirm if its only GPP issue. They say some other component on logic board has failed so cannot give free replacement.
Raise it with Customer care who puts me through Customer Relationship Manager, she says she'll have Apple engineers validate it.
Comes back next day, says Apple engg ran test and found out its not GPP issue. I ask for results confirming it. She says I can get those from ASP.
Next day go to ASP, ask for results, they say we could never run any test.
I am a bit of technical guy myself. I understand that any malfunctioning hardware can cause kernel panic and graphics processor is pretty important one.
So what I don't understand is, how can Apple say its not NVDIA issue, without even running any test.
Called up customer care again, (this time was connected to different relationship manager) she kept saying the same thing, we did our test and find to connection to GPP issue. I asked her to put me through some technical person. She said she would do it and am waiting for the same.
What I find very frustrating is that I have found many instances where people found the same issues as mine and they got a free replacement of the logic board. Then why in my case Apple is not willing to accept that this is the same problem.
I need help from folks over here. What really are my options? What should I do?
I am hoping the Apple technical person understands what I am saying. But what if he too refuses to accept?
I cannot afford to spend this much on a logic board. Will have to buy a new one and that too non-MAC. (My wife would kill me if I buy another MAC and based on my own experience I would be very scared as well)
    I am based in India.
    Please help.
    -Thanks

Finally some good news. Couldn't wait to share with you all.
Received a call from AASP that they have got the approval for replacement of logic board and I should be getting my laptop back next week. Yayyyy..
    This is what happened today.
Today being a holiday I went there in the afternoon. Luckily the place was empty.  So caught hold of the supervisor and told him lets sit together and work on the
issue. Told him if we suspect the kernel panic to be an OS issue then lets hook up another HDD and bootup the laptop. Thankfully he too obliged.
First thing he booted up in single user mode and ran fsck. HDD was all OK. Then I noticed that the background instead of being completely black had some blue
colored stripes. He probably noticed that as well but didn't say so. When I asked him if it was supposed to be black he said yes but also said it could be an OS
issue as well. Then he got an external monitor. But since the laptop won't boot we couldn't reach the stage where we can make use of external monitor.
Next he brought external HDD. It was detected but again laptop won't boot from it.
Then he got the NVIDIA Test Program on a USB stick and tried to hook it up. Unfortunately the laptop didn't recognize the USB stick. He then got the specs of
my laptop from Apple Site and brought up the TS2377. Then he gave me some nonsense about how my model was 15"MBP 2.2/2.4 GHz (Late
2007) whereas in TS2377, it just says 15"MBP 2.2/2.4 GHz, no mention of Late 2007, therefore my laptop is not part of affected batch. I was like, dude, what
are you talking about, its clearly mentioned manufactured between May 2007 to September 2008. Then he said, this model doesn't have "something" because of
which the NVIDIA test cannot be run. When I asked what that something is, then he just said nothing and cut short that thread of conversation. Then he tried to run
the test on his own laptop and to my good fortune even that laptop didn't recognize the USB at bootup time. It would detect when system was running. At
that point he pretty much ran out of all excuses and told me he would take the laptop inside and work on it. He told me he'll give me a call once he has an
update which he did a while back and gave me the fantastic news.
Although I am thankful to this AASP person for looking into it seriously, this whole episode has left a bitter taste about Apple's service in general.
First I never expected Apple product to go bust in less than 4 years. And if there is a known manufacturing fault then Apple should make sure that the
customer doesnt have to do running around to prove the issue.
The NVIDIA test requires the system to boot up. But ideally the test should be such that they should just be able to take the logic board and verify it somehow.
Its like, if the part has gone little bad then we can replace, but if its gone completely bad then we can't.
Also, Apple should look to fix issues in logic board rather than asking users to replace it completely (in the event they are not providing replacement). For all
we know the problem could be in $10 component that requires a $1000 to replace.
Anyways, enough of my rant. I'm just relieved that matter is resolved. I am thankful to all who replied esp tjk.
    Wow.
As you and I already know, that machine is indeed one of the models that may be affected by the NVIDIA issue. It's difficult to believe someone would deny that. Anyway, your persistence paid off, and you should be on the way to a normally functioning MBP. Finally. It's too bad you had to go through all that, but I'm glad that worked out for you. Hope you'll post back with the results after the MBP is repaired.

  • Harddrive not appearing in system profiler or as a startup disc choice

In the last two weeks, (but not every time) I startup my Early 2008 Intel iMac, I either get a grey screen with no mouse pointer or a grey screen with the file folder with the question mark.  When I insert the Snow Leopard DVD Install Disc, and head to startup disk or disk utility the only 'thing' in either dialog box is the DVD disk itself, not my physical internal hard drive.  This occurs whether I hold down Option on the keyboard during startup or not.  I'm having trouble diagnosing whether this is a software issue with my hard drive/startup items or a straight-up impending hard drive failure.  Any insight would be greatly appreciated, thanks.
    -Jack

I would recommend running Verify Disk & Repair Disk from the the original OS X disk in Disk Utilities. If the drive sees errors in Repair Disk run that over again until no errors are found.
AHT is not the most comprehensive testing tool, if you want a more robust one you can try the trial version of Disk Warrior and if you want you can purchase a license.
I see you have MS Windows installed using Boot Camp, can you boot into MS Windows?
The other alternative it to take your machine into an AASP or Apple Store for a thorough test.

  • PowerBook 15"  Al not turning on (Logic Board dead)

    Hi,
My powerbook has not been turning on since last morning. I went to get it checked at the apple care centre in Bangalore and they tell me its a logic board issue. Now this is something very strange for me. Last night it was working fine and I had just turned my pb off after work. When I tried to start it in the morning it just wouldnt turn on and now they tell me that the logic board had gone kaput. I cant understand how this can happen when there is was off the external power supply.
Has someone been experiencing similar problem of the logic board just dying ?
I bought it in April 2005.

    vibhanshu:
I have not seen as many logic board issues with the 15", although if you go to the Search field at the top right of this page and type in logicboard, I am sure you will find you are not the only one.
G3 and G4 iBooks have had much more of an issue, as have the 12" G4 PowerBooks. I am not such what causes it, although I am pretty sure it is not something that you did.
Unfortunately, your computer is not of much use without the logic board, so I guess you'll have to bite the bullet and get it fixed. If you have AppleCare it should not cost you anything; if you don't, I'm not sure what the prices are in Bangalore.
Please do post back with further questions or comments.
    Good luck.

  • MRS: PRT Tool Resource does not appear in Planning Board

    Hi Experts,
I am trying to perform tool assignment but somehow the tool resource does not appear in the planning board.  I have the following set up:
    - Tool created as both material and Equipment (category P)
    - Equipment assigned to work center linked to Org Unit
    - Order with operations created with PRT assigned
What I am seeing in the planning board:
    - I can see the operation with the linked PRT
    - I can see the HR resource under the same work center Org Unit
    - However, I cannot see the Tool resource.
Am I missing somethng here?  Any kind of pointers would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you in advance,
    Jk

Thank you for your response, Varun.
I do have the equipment work center set to be the same as the operation work center.  Also, when I try to add the PRT manually in the planning board, I get 2 error messages:
    "Resource  is not available"
    "Selected equipment 0 is invalid"
    Have you encountered this before?

  • Database Expert -- Views at End of Alpha List Do Not Appear

I'm working with an MS-SQL database. All the table in it, from A to Z show up.  The DB vendor wants us to use views to access data for reports, however.  And looking at the list of views in the Database Expert -- the list is cut off in the vwRs.
So for example, vwPersons is visible, as is vwReports.
But vwTopicCodes, in same DB, and at least 40 other tables from vwSales to vwZipCodes, do not appear.
Any logical place to start looking for the cause of this kind of behavior?

Why does CR only return 8,000 database objects?
    Cause
The number of database objects returned to CR is determined by the setting in the Windows Registry. The default value for this registry setting is 8,000. You can change this default value by editing the Windows registry setting, NTablesMax.
NTablesMax - specifies the number of database  objects to get a listing of from the database. Once this number is reached the listing of objects in Crystal Reports is stopped. Objects can include tables, views, synonyms and stored procedures.

PowerBook G4 boots to unfamiliar login. List of known user accounts does not appear and original admin user name and password is rejected. What is going on here?

There are no children, nor other suspicious characters that have "played" with my computer. One moment I'm in, the next time I turn on/restart the powerbook I'm at a screen with the name of the hard drive and two fields: username and password. Not a list with pictures and names ie 'Katie Jo' with an orange icon and 'Guest' with a silhouette of a head.
In an attempt to remedy this problem, I backed up files using target disk mode and firewire cable. I then, rebooted in single user mode, typed in the correct script and essentially made the computer appear virgin again. Original start up welcome screen display with multiple languages, and then set up prompts such as language, network, and registration. After completing the cues and the "just a few more questions" page, I press continue and am left at a grey standstill, with the continue button greyed out, and no other actions. I'm only able to "go back" by clicking the go back button, all the way to the beginning of the set up, and as I proceed through the steps a second time, I'm greeted with the same halt. What is this?

  • I have had three seperate credit card charges from itunes but I haven't ordered anything and they do not appear on my itunes purchased list.

Why do I have mystery charges??!!
Hi I have been charged three seperate transactions on my credit card statement from itunes. I did not make these purchases and I have checked on my itunes purchase list and they do not appear. How or why did this happen? What can be done to prevent further false purchase transactions? I have already informed my credit card company.
    Thanks :/

If the charges are not reflected in the Purchase History, then it's most likely a fraudulent charge to your credit card directly rather than an unauthorized purchase through your iTunes Store account in which case it will be up to your bank to handle. I would, however, suggest that you change your password to your Apple ID, using one that will be difficult to guess, just as a precaution. You can also go here:
    http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/contact/
and follow the instructions to report the issue to the iTunes Store, though if the false charges didn't come through them, there will be nothing they can do.
