PowerBook G4 17-inch with external CRT monitor?

I'm looking at purchasing a CRT display to use with my PB 17-inch 1.33 GHz. I'm a photographer and need a display for critical image color correction. Does the PB support CRT displays? Is there a size limitation of the CT display. Any recommendations?
17-inch 1.33 GHz w/ 2 GB RAM   Mac OS X (10.4)

No problem with it, get the best display you can. I think the only limitation may be resolution if you get a really large display, but most that is only a bad thing with an lcd as it has to "clump" pixels together to create a non native resolution. Just check the specs for your PB and get something that is comfortable with the resolution.

  • Ghosting with External CRT Monitor. Any Solution Yet?

a number of months ago i saw a LONG thread that, as far as i read, never really solved this issue. I was wondering if a solution was ever found.
    thanks, seth

more tests reveal a very perplexing conclusion:
    my PB works with:
    1. NEC (model #: ??? - looks very similar to LaCie electron blue), with built-in vga cable and apple adapter
    2. NEC Accusync 120, with removable vga cable (using both this NEC's supplied vga cable AND my LaCie's supplied vga cable) and apple adapter.
LaCie Monitor works with 2 different PC laptops connecting via vga cable. No adapter needed.
I have observed that the problem is
    1. not with my computer, since it works with 2 other monitors.
    2. not with the LaCie Monitor nor the LaCie-supplied vga cable since it works with 2 different PC laptops
    3. not with the vga cable/apple adapter combination because it works with PB attached to NEC Accusync 120
Which leads to the conclusion that this Macintosh PowerBook 15" Aluminum DOES NOT WORK with this LaCie Electron Blue 19
    Can someone explain?

  • New dual mac pro using fcp studio doesn't see external crt monitor

I recently invested in a system to re-edit film and set up my system...dual editing up is fine I put my larger dell monitor through the 3870 which is in bay one and the browser comes up on the 2nd monitor connected to the 2600 in bay 2.
The problem is I can't get my EXTERNAL VIDEO out go to the crt monitor...this is connected by svideo that's on the 3870 which my primary monitor is connected to. Under "video playback" there's no option to choose "apple firewire" the only thing on that menu is the "digital cinema desktop preview" and only those choices, the same under my audio/video settings under the "final cut pro" menu. Theres no option I see on here either for mirroring under the playback menu either am I looking in the wrong place?
This appears to be a software issue as I'm not seeing the other options under video playback to even recognize the dv connection to my primary monitor...I've seen commentary in other logs to try deleting preferences but which ones?
The crt monitor is seen under my apple hardware, I can move things in and out of it...only in final cut pro I can't get external monitor on it...and when I choose this cinema choice the picture comes up on my main monitor but only as a still it doesn't seem to allow me to choose "all frames" in any case.
My main concern right now is to get this external monitor to be read by final cut PLEASE HELP thanks!

Got the "apple firewire ntsc" choice to show up even if grayed out and "missing" under "audio/visual" menus by recreating choices in Easy Setup under "final cut pro" MENU thank GOODNESS because I was reading horror stories on here about this under another thread with someone trashing preferences, reinstalling and the works and still not getting it to show up...on my search now for an analog/digital converter up at b&h...find it odd that the s video connector wouldn't show the crt monitor when I put both displays through the 3870...I switched it back to see if it worked again when only the one dell monitor display was there and there it is again mirroring the screen display on my desktop...just can't be seen as an "external monitor" in fcp...couldn't find anything specific in the shane ross threads to this. I'm sad the program doesn't just see the s video connection though the 3870 though my computer does fine and will query up at b&h in regard to what might be affordable as far as a digital/analog converter. It's also weird in itself that when I put the two dell monitors on the one card my computer no longer could see the s video crt connection...makes no sense. Will report in later as to what I discover up at b&h as I'm sure there's a world of people out there using this sony crt monitor still even into the upgrades with computers and software so I imagine therein lies the solution. Thanks again and I'll report in as to what hardware might be suggested for me.

  • Premiere Pro CS6 with external HDMI monitor

    Hello all
Is it possible to use an HDMI monitor as an external preview monitor when editing with Premiere Pro CS6?  If so, then how is it connected, and where can i find the correct tick box in
Premiere Pro CS6?  I have an apple iMac (early 2009) intel core 2 Duo (if this is relevant).
I need to be sure of the correct colour/look output, etc.
Any advice would be greatfully received.
    Thanks
    Karl.

    Hi Ferret Head,
    Please go to premiere pro>preferences>playback
and check the option for the second monitor under video device.
    Thanks

  • External CRT Monitor with Color - Can't find an answer

Hi.. Is the AJA IO LA or LD compatible with Color and an external Monitor. I have both, but under the video preview selection (or whatever its calles) only Disabled is the option. All other options are greyed. These units work with FCP. But cant find a way in Color. Am I missing something here?
    Thanks

Matrox just added Color support to the MXO. You can download the MXO 2.1 beta via their MXO forum. It's only the first release but it's very promising.

  • Power usage with external LCD monitor?

    Hi All,
I'm wondering if using my MBP with an external screen would significantly reduce the laptop's battery endurance as my 5 months old MBP seems to have lowered its battery endurance to approx. 2.5 hours from the original state of 5 hours. in System Profiler the battery appears to still charge to almost full capacity, so I am wondering if external screen is the major factor in reducing the time the battery lasts.
    Thanks,
    Harold

I've always try my best to unplug AC whenever the battery is fully charged and only reconnect to AC when battery is low.
Unfortunately, what you're doing is bad for your battery. First, there's no need to unplug the AC when the battery is charged. Charging stops with the battery is full, and doesn't initiate if the current charge is 95% or higher. Full discharges are bad for your battery. Lithium batteries should be used frequently but lightly. The practices you describe are applicable to older nickel-based batteries, but detrimental to the newer lithium chemistry.
Is the charge reduction from 5 hours to 2.5 hours within 5 months reasonable?
Not unless you're racked up a LOT of cycles. Check your cycle count in System Profiler (Apple menu > About this Mac > More Info > Power).
More likely, there's something using a lot of CPU power in the background. Check Utilities > Activity Monitor > CPU tab, set the pop-up menu to Active Processes, click on the CPU column to sort, and see if anything is using a high amount of CPU capacity.

  • MacBook Spring 2010 Snow Leopard won't work with External Samsung Monitor

    Hi,
I have a MacBook I purchased about a month ago and it's not working with my Samsung SyncMaster 940 BW. I am using Mini DisplayPort out with a Mini DisplayPort-to-VGA adaptor which goes into my SyncMaster Monitor. I have tried rebooting, and also playing around with my laptop resolution, but otherwise I have no idea what to do about this.
I've read on the discussions that this is a known Snow-Leopard issue but I thought I might post to see if this has been resolved. I run all the updates but the monitor still isn't working?

A better place to post would be in the The MacBook Pro Display (2008 and Later) forum:

  • Single field display on external crt monitor

I can't find the setting to display a paused frame as deinterlaced on my external monitor. (My client is put off by the 'shimmering' of the two field display when paused). Is there a setting that will change this?
    Many thanks

You must apply the Deinterlace filter to the freeze frames: Filters > Video > Deinterlace.
    Hope it helps!

  • Using CRT Monitor Only

I just attached my 19 inch IBM C92 CRT monitor to my iMac G3/400. The picture appears on both monitors? How can I turn off the iMac monitor, so that only the IBM is working?. The IBM monitor is far superior. Thanks, Ken.

With that old of a computer, the options are few.
If you can sleep just the internal display and keep the
external one on, or dim the internal and not have the
external 'mirror' every detail on the iMac's, that could
do the trick. However, 'mirror' displays is what it does.
There had been some kinds of display hacks that had
some followers (and detractors who found problems)
so that idea, to attempt to hack the display code to
have an external display do more, may not be an idea.
A screen span doctor (extended desktop) patch will
NOT work on the iMac G3 and other computers. That
was originally a hack for some portable Macs from the
website at rutemoeller.com with a workaround.
The other possible software that may work, may not on
that CRT iMac model since the graphics processor and
other items don't work the same way as newer ones.
Switch Res X: (control panel options for some Macs)
    older versions: http://www.madrau.com/download/oldies/oldies.php
(The newest Switch Res X4 is for OS X newer than 10.4)
In some situations, people have tried to dim the internal display
or have it somehow 'sleep' but in the older iMac CRT G3, this
tends to make the external one mirror the internal, too. To cover
    over a warm-running CRT may create a heat problem in the Mac;
so perhaps to not have the iMac were its internal display is visible
while viewing the better quality external, is about all you can do(?)
And it is very inconvenient to open the case and unplug the CRT
so only the external will work. If you were to make a hack tower
out of the iMac G3 and forgo the CRT altogether, then you could
choose any display including LCDs as the main one...
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • FCP and QT play to a second CRT monitor via FW800?

I have FCP installed on my iMAC, my iMAC has a FW800 and Mini DisplayPort.
I also have an old CRT monitor that I used for an older PC that I now want to view videos rendered on FCP. I read in the documentation that FCP can play/output to an external video device (using firewire amoung other things).
I'm not sure how to do this but is it possible to connect my iMAC via FW800 to my old CRT monitor?
If so what cables and converters do I need to get? Note that I do not have a video deck.
I basically need to see how my videos look on CRT displays. Currently I'm copying my videos to my PC and then playing them but I was hoping to skip that step.

stockfootage: Thanks, I'll try that out! I wasn't sure if I was suppose to use the FW800 or Mini DisplayPort port.
    Oh and yes, I'm both a ballerina and a graphics artist. <high 5's ya> ... <grin>
Bengt: Thanks for the warning, I have FCP 7, I wasn't too concearned with getting QT to work, it would be a plus though. But I basically wanted to see what the output looked like without having to transfer it to my PC and view it on my PC's CRT monitor each time.
e45blue: It's an old SONY CRT computer monitor, it's actually starting to die.
I have an old analog NTSC TV set with a digital TV converter box... though that old TV is dying too and it's in another room anyways.
I basically want to see how the production video I'm editing looks like on a CRT display. I'm using an iMAC to edit the videos and that iMAC is an LCD display so the colors look richer but always looks over exposed.
When I move the edited videos to my PC they look underexposed... and that is with my CRT monitor's contrast at maximum.

  • Images appear bright on my iMac but dark on CRT monitor

When I look at images on my early 2006 20" intel iMac they appear ok but when I view them on a mac with a CRT monitor they are really dark. I have lowered the brightness of the screen but it won't go dark enough. Is this a known problem or is it just mine?

    Hi Andrew,
    Welcome to Discussions
When you plug the CRT into the iMac, open system preferences. Go to the "displays" section. Make sure that 1. the brightness on the external monitor is high, and 2. that the refresh rate (because it's a CRT) is set high enough (at least 60 Hertz).
    Also...
How old is the CRT? I've noticed that the older the CRT monitor, the dimmer it gets. At least that's just my experience.
    Hope this Helps
    Trevor

  • Dell crt-monitor compability

    hi there!
i´d like to buy a powermac G5... but will it run with my CRT-monitor dell M 992 (VGA-port)??
do i need drivers an where can i get them?
    greetings,
    askal

It will work; all new Power Macs come with a DVI-VGA adapter, and you won't need a driver for your monitor.

  • External LCD monitors with DVI PowerBook: Banding Issues

I have a DVI PB and would like to attach an external LCD monitor. I've looked at both Samsung 20 inch and ViewSonic 19 inch versions but whenever I attach them, I get "banding" around the edges of the external monitor. Tonight, I went to CompUSA to look at the Samsung 204B 20 inch. Taking my PB with me, I hooked up and set the resolution to 1600 x 1200 and the Samsung had huge, fat black banding all around the monitor. If you don't know - banding looks like a large, black border going around the screen. The sales guy pushed some auto-set buttons (which is said always work to remove the banding) but it didn't fix the issue. Any suggestions? Is there some secret that I'm not aware of on how to attach and use an external LCD monitor with the PB? One note: I did set the resolution down to 1280 x 1024, which worked fine to remove the banding but it monitor looked horrible. Not the best resolution for a large monitor.
    Thanks,
    B. Rose
    TiBook 800 & iBook SE   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Hi, Bill. I can't speak to whatever happened with the Viewsonic monitor, since you didn't tell us about that, but it sounds as though the Samsung was in display mirroring mode rather than extended-desktop mode. The F7 key on your Powerbook's keyboard toggles an external monitor between the two modes. In mirror mode, the external monitor displays exactly the same thing as the built-in display. In extended-desktop mode, it functions as a separate portion of your desktop, and you can drag things (windows, icons) from one monitor onto the other. If you're going to use both displays, extended-desktop mode is probably what you'll want: why keep two copies of the same thing in front of you?
In mirrored mode, the fact that your Powerbook's display has a maximum resolution of 1280 x 854 means that only 1280 x 854 pixels of the external monitor can be used — leaving wide black borders of untapped pixels around the copy of your PB's display that's centered on the external monitor. In extended-desktop mode, the external display's native resolution of 1600 x 1200 can all be used, provided that your 32MB of VRAM is sufficient to drive the total of (1280 x 854) + (1600 x 1200) = 3,013,120 pixels, at the bit depth you've selected. (You might have to use the extended-desktop mode in Thousands of colors, rather than Millions.)
Another issue that comes into play with display mirroring is that the 4:3 aspect ratio of the 1600 x 1200 Samsung is different from the 3:2 aspect ratio of the Powerbook's display. If you set the Samsung's resolution to 1280 x 1024 to match the pixel width of the PB display, the top and bottom of the Samsung will be black bands, because the PB isn't manufacturing any pixels to fill those bands. And it will be blurry, because the Samsung has to interpolate to make 1600 pixels look (sort of) like 1280 pixels. Unlike a CRT display, the actual number of pixels in an LCD is fixed. When you change resolution settings on an LCD from its native (maximum) resolution to anything less, the image is always blurred. Only the native resolution can be really sharp.

  • My Macbook Pro 15-inch with retina display crashes sometimes when connected to an external monitor

My almost-new Macbook Pro 15-inch with retina display goes black and shuts down sometimes when connected to my external monitor. (The first time it did this was when connected to a projector.) They have replaced the motherboard but it still happens sometimes. The computer and monitor both come back on after a few seconds.
