Powerbook G4 17 inches 1.67GHz support DDR2?

Just got a powerbook G4 inch 17 inches 1.67GHz. I want to upgrade its memory. I found from Curcial.com that there're both Powerbook 17 1.67Ghz DDR and DDR2. Anyone knows it possible DDR2 memory?

hi Blind,
there is two model of Powerbook G4 1.67Ghz and it really depends of which one you have.
the model that include the double-layer super drive will support DDR2 but not the other one.
here are the references:

Your motherboard does not support ddr2 memory which uses a different socket.
Agreed. In addition: none of the current Athlon 64 CPUs is actually supporting DDR2 (memory controller is built in CPU, remember?). You will have to wait for the new CPUs (socket AM2) which will be available in June 2006.

  • Does a powerbook G4 1Ghz of 2003 can support a Dell 3008WFP 30 fts display?

does a powerbook G4 1Ghz of 2003 can support a Dell 3008WFP 30 fts display switched on 1920x1200 ? (of course i know that the native resolution of 30 fts are 2500x ...)
i mean does my graphic card will manage it ... and is there any risk that i only obtain a no-full screen with black portions ....?
thanx for your help gentlemen ...

Last question first: No, you can't connect two monitors to your Powerbook using the S-Video and DVI ports. Only one external monitor at a time is supported.
Every LCD display contains a fixed number of pixels, which is called its native resolution. For a 30" computer display, a typical native resolution is 2560 x 1600 pixels. If you send that display a video image that contains only 1920 x 1200 pixels, the image can be displayed in either of two ways: it can be represented pix-for-pixel in the center of the larger pixel field, leaving a border of unused pixels 320 pixels wide on the sides and 200 pixels high at the top and bottom. Or, it can be displayed covering the full screen by having the monitor use all its pixels to imitate the smaller number of pixels in the image that's being provided by the graphics card in your computer. Using 2560 physical pixels to simulate 1920 imaginary pixels requires that each pixel in the sent image has to be represented by one-and-a-fraction pixels in the LCD. But pixels aren't divisible: any pixel can only be one color. So any real pixel in the LCD panel that's supposed to be representing parts of two diferent-colored pixels in the video image sent by the computer can only be one color, and that color will be a compromise between the two colors of the two pixels it's supposed to represent. The result is blurring. Whenever an LCD disply is used to simulate any resolution other than its native resolution, the image is blurred. Yes, when you use your 1440 x 900 LCD panel at a setting of 1152 x 720, what you see is blurred. You may find it acceptable, but it is blurred. It isn't nearly as sharp as it would be if your display were set for its native resolution.
If you can live with a blurred display image, fine for you, but it doesn't make a bit of sense to pay a premium for a high-resolution display panel and then use it at a lower resolution setting that makes it blurry. Even if you don't mind the blurring, it's simply silly to pay extra for resolution that you don't intend to use.

    I already got 1 module 2GB DDR2 PC2-5300 installed, so if i get on 2GB DDR2 PC2-6400, it will work or not?
And if it will work does the dual channel feature will work?
About the HDD what is the maximum HDD capacity i can in stall in the same model because i'll get 1TB , so this will work ?

    Hi
The notebook supports the Intel 945GM chipset.
This chipset seems to support max 533MHz.
So if you would plug 667MHz memory modules, then the system would still works at 533MHz.
The modules are DDR2 so I dont see any reasons why the dual channel should not work in your case.
    >About the HDD what is the maximum HDD capacity i can in stall in the same model because i'll get 1TB , so this will work ?
Notebook supports SATA interface. The SATA controller has not limitation to the HDD size so theoretically you should be able to use such big HDD but to be honest; I never used such big HDD. The biggest one which I used in by notebook was 500GB and this was big enough.
However, you will need to test it to b e100% sure.

  • Supporting DDR2-667

Okay, this may be a silly question but here goes:  I just recently purchased an MSI 945GM2-F mobo which is supposed to support ddr2-400/533/667 memory.  I bought 2x512mb sticks of ddr2-667 memory to go along with the mobo.  However, when I boot the mobo up I see this message, "The MCH is operating with DDR2 533/CL5 in dual channel mode".  Okay, so if I have ddr2-667 why do I see this message at 533?  Even when I run CPU-Z, it reports the memory as supporting 533 and 667 but it is only running at 533.  What do I need to do to get my mobo to support the 667 speed, AS STATED BY THE MOTHERBOARD SPECS, properly?  I also see in CPU-Z that the FSB:DRAM ratio is 3:4.  Now, the BIOS (I have the latest) does not have any settings to tweak the FSB at all!  ONly the the memory timings!  How can I get it to run at ddr2-667?  Thanks!

I have an Intel Pentium4 631 CPU (3.0GHZ), Socket LGA775 with a Bus Speed of 800MHZ sitting in a MSI 945GM2-F mobo (which, on the box, says it supports ddr2 667) with 2x512MB sticks of Buffalo DDR2 PC-5300 (667MHZ).  You're saying that the mobo won't support the 667 out-of-the-box because of the CPU?  Help me understand why it won't.  The whole reason I got the 667 was because the mobo said it supported it.  No where in the mobo manual or MSI website do they say that you need to have a CPU with a 1066 FSB OR you have to overclock in order for the 667MHZ to work.  IF that is the case, then the listed specs are misleading.

its a CPU problem not a mobo. don't be disappointed from the board. if the CPU can work with DDR2 the board will have those DIMM slots.
i mean if you got board with DDR2 memory support and also have DDR2 memory sticks, you have to change CPU as well.

  • Can 915G Combo support DDR2-800 ?

    Hey ~~every1
My Motherboard is 915G Combo MS-7058 BIOS ver 1.6 which support both DDR1 & DDR2. Now i just consider to upgrade DDR2 Module. Can My Motherboard support the latest DDR2 667 or 800 ? There is a news that Infineon will start to produce DDR2-800 in June that 512MB DDR2-800 will be price at $93.
    Here is Comp Spec
    MSI 915G Combo MS-7058 BIOS ver 1.6
    LGA775 Intel 540 Pentium 4 3.2Ghz
    Kingston 512MB DDR400(Single Channel)
    40 HDD Samsung (PATA-Spinpoint)
    SW-252B Samsung Writer
    Prolink V.92 Modem
    PowerSupply 480W (20 Pin)

The ram should run OK, just not at it's maximum speed. For you CPU the optimum speed is DDR400.
I have my doubts that DDR2 800 will be available for under $100, but I have been wrong before
Do you intend on buying two sticks or one? If only one, stick with what you have now. If two I think you need to decide if what you are purchasing will perform any better than buying for more stick of DDR 400. Performance wise I don't think so.

  • Dose MS-7258 BIOS support FSB-800(400MHZ) DDR2 ?

    Hi
    I use MS-7258 Neo-V motherboard with the latest BIOS version 3.9 (AWARD) and 4G DDR2 FSB-800(400MHz).
The BIOS only recognizes 3G of RAM.
Sometime ago I used CPU-Z program and found out  that the operating frequency of DRAM is only 266MHZ !!!
The SPD of DRAM indicates support for 200-266-400 MHZ frequencies ,and motherboard manual specifies support for DRAM 400-533 MHZ ,
also in BIOS we can set the frequency of DRAM to one of 200-266-auto,
the question is that why when I set the BIOS to detect the frequency of DRAM automatically (auto option) ,it selects the lowest freqency to operate (instead of highest possible frequency) ?
    Thanks

CPU-Z shows the real memory frequency.  DDR stands for "Double Data Rate" (two transactions per clock cycle), which means that 266 MHz effectively translates to DDR2-533.

    Yes:
    DDR2-400 (real frequency = 200 MHz)
    DDR2-533 (real frequency = 266 MHz)

It has selected DDR2-533 (266 MHz) because that is the highest clock speed the memory controller of the VIA Chipset natively supports.

Even though you may have DDR2-800 (400 MHz) modules, that does not mean you can operate them @DDR2-800 (400 MHz) on a board that natively only supports DDR2-400 and DDR2-533 memory modules.

  • Does the 975x platinum PE really support 1066MHz DDR2?

     ???
Hello I recently purchased a 975x Platinum edition and basically have two queries. First on the MSI press center page for this motherboard it clearly states it will support the newer 1066mhz ddr2 ram

        * 2 PCI Express x16& 2 PCI Express x1 slots
        * Support ATi CrossFire Technology
        * 4+1 SATA2 3Gb/s Support RAID
        * Support 7.1 Channel Dolby MS HD Audio
        * Support Intel® PRO Gigabit LAN
        * Communication Slot
        * Dual CoreCell on Board
    http://msicomputer.co.uk/uk_news.aspx?News_Id=62
IT also says it supports max of 8gb of ram using 4 slots.
as far as i know I haven't seen any 2gb modules.
I've read some of the concerns on this forum and have noticed people have had trouble getting their module up to 800mhz. What's the deal here.
    Thanks.

    Hi Rodruff,
As you see by my specs below I am running 1066mhz memory, I went for the cheap stuff Kingston Hypre PC8500 and Am running it at 1060mhz. I can not overclock it but I can recommend your bios settings for you as I went through quite a bit of testing.
I have a 60mm fan attached to both my north bridge and south bridge, needed to get over 300mhz clock. I am using bios beta 716 and my proc @2.8GHZ nice and stable. I have found that this bios is stable and gives correct ratios for memory.
Your memory may differ from mine but I can not push my FSB past 353mhz as this would force my memory into overclocking and it won't take it.
FSB:Dram = 1:1.5 = 1:3/2 = 353:530 (double the data rate so effective is 1060mhz) My memory would only work at ratios 1:1 or 1:1.5, yours may differ but it's a good starting point. I have my Vcore @1.3 for a 353mhz FSB.
Technically if you want to run your proc at stock you should be able to run 1:2 ratio, 267:533 but mine can not run @1066 exact so I would have to lower my clock, no thanks. You may need to up your vdram to 2.2 for these higher ratios but you will need to check your memory specs to confirm.
Also you will need to set your memory timing manually, mine being 5-5-5-15 but I am running 4-4-4-12 ok. You will need to check your mem specs to get your timing though.
Lastly there are some settings to disable in the bios as to not mess with your overclocking -
    Advanced settings/CPU settings -
    Disable Speed step
    Disable C1E something?
    Disable Visualisation
    Cell Menu -
    Disable Spread spectrum
    Disable PCI clk
Let us know how you get on - Remember that if the board doen't like your overclock it goes into a no dosplay/reboot cycle. Power down and press the power button twice to reset bad setting. That fails press the bios reset switch located in the front left  hand corner of the board.
    Good Luck

  • CPU scaling on dual-layer powerbook

I've been recently looking into buying a powerbook and wondered if owners of the new dual layer PB could fill me in on its new power management scheme.
I understand Apple removed user control on CPU frequency scaling in their latest model. I would like to know if the CPU still reduces its frequency when plugged into AC power. I plan to leave the computer plugged in most of the time and it would be nice if it would still clock down to reduce heat and noise.
Also, what control do you still have over power management, can you control the video hardware's power saving?

The DL Powerbooks support both divide-by-two mode, AND, for the first time, divide-by-four mode. That is, the processor will set itself to 1.67GHz, 833MHz and 417MHz as needed for the particular task at hand. There is no user control over this switching; it is automated. Previous Powerbooks with 7447 processors have simply supported divide-by-two, e.g. 1.5GHz or 750MHz, with the user having the option to choose 'highest', 'automatic', or 'reduced'. The source for this information is the developer notes on the Apple Developer Connection website.
Interestingly, I had understood only the 7448 processor from Freescale was supposed to be able to support divide-by-four, and this was the processor that many speculated would be in this revision of Powerbook -- Freescale's first 90 nanometer G4 chip. However, it was not to be and this computer once again has a 7447 G4. I don't know how Apple has implemented it on this one -- perhaps the new ASIC controller chip that was allegedly causing trouble in testing.

  • Powerbook G4 Processor Problem

    Hi All,
I have just bought a 15" PB 1.67Ghz (high-res model) with 120Gb HDD and 2Gb Ram. This replaced my two and half year old 15" PB 1.25Ghz model.
I have noticed that there is no Processor Performance Tab in the Energy Saver/Options dialogue window. On my last PB you could adjust the processor from "Normal" to "Highest". I went to my local Apple Store and noticed that the in-store 15.2" PB also didn't allow for adjustment of processor performance in the Engery Saver settings window. I checked the iBooks and G5s they had in-store and these allowed adjustment of processor performance.
The guys in-store said this was normal for the latest 1.67Ghz PBs but I read a MacCentral review of the PB 1.67 (hi-res) which refers to setting the processor to Highest for benchmarking purposes. Are there any users who can confirm whether this is normal for this generation of PB? And whether (if possible) I can get this option to re-appear in the Energy Saver window? Is this something I should take up with Applecare?
Thanks in advance for any help you're able to offer.
