Powerbook G4-17", Mac OS 10.5.8, Flash 10 settings

Ok, I have made peace with the fact that Flash 10 is running a lot slower on my son's PowerBook G4 than my comparable work Windows based laptop. However, I would like to make sure I run it as efficiently as possible. When I right click a Flash box, I can adjust the settings. What are the optimal settings for a Mac? Should I use Hardware Acceleration on or off? How much data should I allow to be downloaded for local storage?

Yeah, a lot of web video seems optimized for Intel processors. Our MacBook Pro (our only Intel Mac) is where we watch most web video any more.
Someone in the iMac G4 forum suggest turning off hardware acceleration in the Flash settings. I tried it on my G4 1.25G desktop running Tiger and I think it helped. Haven't applied it to the old PowerBook yet.
I recently bumped my RAM from 1G to 1.75G in the desktop G4 and I don't think that helped the video issues very much. However, running Leo, you may want more RAM anyway. With modern modules your computer should handle 2G of RAM.

That can have a huge bad influence on streaming video. You'll probably have to let the entire video load before viewing. We have 5.5Mbps service and still get some stalls.

Do "About this Mac" and then click the "More info..." button in the resulting window. That brings up System Profiler. In SP's left pane, select Graphics/Displays. The amount of VRAM with appear in the main pane.

Hi - i am looking for a webcam for my PowerBook G4 running Mac OS 10.4.11. No Apple service center or other computer store in India has any idea of what camera could work. Logitech sells the QuickCam Vision Pro for Mac, but that is too expensive for me. The ones I liked (from Logitech) are the Webcam C200/C250M/C500/C600 and the QuickCam for Notebooks - though I don't know if any of these is compatible with my G4.
Any suggestions? I'm open to suppliers other than Logitech, as long as it does not cost more than $60.

Can PowerBook G4 with Mac OS 10.4.11 enable printing with iPhone iOS 6.0

I have a PowerBook G4 running Mac OS 10.4.11 (PPC). I have 3 printers on a network linked either as USB printers or as WiFi peripherals: HP Color LaserJet 2840, HP DeskJet 940c, Samsung ML-1210. I would like to enable AirPrint for iPad, iPhone 6.0 in this network system. Printopia nor FingerPrint will run on PPC machines and neither function on 10.4.11. I tried to use the solution in Simon Blog but no printers are recognized by the iPad nor iPhone. Any ideas anyone?

Follow up: I confirmed that Pacifist will extract and install the package on a PowerBook G4 running OS X 10.4.11.
Package extraction and installation:
Once you download and install Pacifist, launch Pacifist, locate the AirPrint-1.0.pkg file and open it.
Click the "reveal triangles" at the left to show all the package's contents.
Select the "AirPrint" icon, then click Install. Ensure the "Use Administrator Privileges" box is checked and select Install. Authenticate with your Administrator name and password.
Repeat for "ca.mlabs.airprint.plist" and "printers.plist".
You may then quit Pacifist.
"mLabs AirPrint" installation:
Follow the instructions in the developer's website. Under "Setup" make sure you do not copy the $ prompt, in other words copy and paste the following in a Terminal window:
/usr/local/bin/airprint/AirPrint config
and press Return.
The program will present a list of your installed printers.
The same general technique is used for removing printers.
Uninstalling the program:
First stop the service with the following Terminal command:
sudo launchctl unload /LibraryLaunchDaemons/ca.mlabs.airprint.plist
Authenticate when prompted.
Then delete the following files, in the Finder, by first opening the folders using the Finder's Go > "Go to Folder..." menu.
/usr/local/bin/airprint/AirPrint
/usr/local/bin/airprint/printers.plist
/Library/LaunchDaemons/ca.mlabs.airprint.plist

Importing photos from my Powerbook to my Mac Mini

I am running iPhoto '06 v. 6.0.6 on my Powerbook. I am also running iPhoto '08 v. 7.1.5 on my Mini (don't know how I ended up with different versions) and want to import my photos from my Powerbook to my Mac Mini. When I tried, it didn't work- the thumb nails were all there but when I clicked on the individual photo a big black 'image' came up with a big white exclamation mark on it.
I presume I need the same versions to be able to do this? How can I get the new version, I didn't buy iPhoto 08 so I don't know how it got on my laptop!

I wonder if you can answer a question I have about the lay-out of iPhoto 08, and if it can be changed. When I click on a thumbnail, the picture comes up full-size but without the line of thumbnails along the top (as it does in '06). The handy arrow and 'done' button are also missing along the bottom. If I press the 'return' button, these things then appear but it doesn't stay like that, it just comes up again without the scroll bar etc when I click on another thumbnail and I must press return again.
Is it just a setting that can be changed somehow?

OS 10.5.8 was the LAST "Universal Binary" OS that Mac released. It could be run on PPC or Intel Macs.
You can use Flash, but NOT the current version. Flash Player 10.3.183.90 is the latest version that will run with 10.5.8.
Apple ended all support for ALL PowerPC hardware and software just over four years ago, so there will be no further development of ANY apps that run with PowerPC Macs, from ANY developer.

Let me also say this flash does work in Safari... just not Firefox. When a flash media link is clicked on FF will go to the link but only a black window appears with no text or error messages or sound.
As far as I know I am running the latest version of Firefox and Flash. I have no plans to upgrade from Snow Leopord to Lion.
Another possible data point for this is Flash updates do not install just by clicking on the download. The DMG downloads but I get an unknown data type when it trys to launch. There is an easy work-around for this be simply launching the DMG from Finder where it runs just fine.
Any thoughts as to why Firefox is not running Flash media files?

If by resetting to factory settings you mean she erased the drive and reinstalled the operating system, OS X, then yes all data thatwas on it is gone. That is why apple included time machine so you can make backups of your data.

I do agree that, most Adobe flash based programs crash on a Mac. But, its Vimeo's fault to adopt flash.
The majority of the internet community use flash content/plugins. Unfortunately not HTML5, that Safari is good at performance in comparison to Flash apps.

If you keep getting a 'red' message it means that the HDD is faulty and will have to be replaced. You will have to format the new HDD in Disk Utility>Erase and then install the OSX and your data from Time Machine.
