Powerbook G4 17" motherborard failure after RAM upgrade???

Thank you in advance for any advice.
I have an original, first generation PB G4 17" that I've used for 5 years. Recently, I had to replace the AC supply because the former one was bent when the laptop fell out of a chair. When I took it in to an authorized dealer here in Taiwan, to test the power adapter, I decided to upgrade the RAM from 1GB to 2 GB. Before I brought it home, it seemed to work at the store, although I thought I did not appreciate any performance boost when I opened multiple apps. Anyway, after I got home, I tried to turn it on, but it would not turn on. Thinking the battery was depleted, I hooked it up to the new AC adapter (Apple brand), and lo and behold it would not boot. I would shut it down by pressing the on/off button or just disconnect the power source (adapter and battery). It started to beep three times after multiple attempts. I took it back to the store, and got my original RAM reinstalled, and the same three beeps occured. I just got a call from the service center and was told that the motherboard has failed. Does any of this make sense? I have never had any trouble like this prior to the RAM upgrade. I just replaced the HD about 6 months ago. I'm just sick to my stomach...Any suggestions? Any input would be much appreciated.

Welcome to the Apple discussions.
We could discuss how you'd benefit from the additional memory, however, since the system isn't working, let's focus on the beeps.
When you start the system, it goes through some tests (called the power on self test or POST) before loading the operating system. If it finds any errors, it beeps, and the beeps are:
1 beep = no RAM installed
2 beeps = incompatible RAM types
3 beeps = no good banks
4 beeps = no good boot images in the boot ROM (and/or bad sys config block)
5 beeps = processor is not usable
3 beeps means it doesn't find any memory that passes the POST test. The fact that this started up after the service center installed the memory upgrade is suspicious, however, if it worked in the store then stopped working later, it may just be unfortunate timing.
There are some company's on the internet that claim they can repair the logic boards, otherwise, Apple's solution is to replace them. In the US, some Apple stores offer a 'fix everything' service for $350, which is less than specifically replacing the logic board - perhaps there is a similar service in Taiwan.

  • Display problem after RAM Upgrade to MS6712

    Hi there,
after a RAM upgrade (512mb to 3GB) my PC has developed a display problem. The graphics are slow / rippled and video playback is very poor. In device manager no "display adapters" are present and there is also an error mesage referring to the VIA CPU to AGP2/AGP3.0 controller not having enough free resources to run due to a conflisct with VGAsave? I've downloaded the latest VIA chipset drivers to no effect?
System info: MS6712 MB, AMD Athlon 1.25GHZ, XP SP3.0

    OK, here's the info on my PSU;
    It's a Powerman FSP250-60GTU(PF). Input: 230V - 5A, 50Hz. Max Output: 250W
While I had the case open I took out 2 of the RAM modules and without making any other changes everything appeared to work fine with just the 1GB, so I tried putting 1 more back in to take it to 2GB and again all seems fine? Does this indeed point to my PSU then? If so and it works fine with 2GB should I be thankfull for a 512mb to 2GB upgrade and send the 3rd module back to Crucial??
Before I posted this thread I did run a memtest from Memtest86+ with all three modules installed and it came up with NO problems?
Re Henry's post, I searched using the format of the part no on the RAM modules themselves i.e. M368L2923FLN-CB3 and it took me here:

Other info on printed the modules themselves: 1GB DDR PC2700 CL2.5
According to Everest my CPU temp (with 2GB installed) is: 43 degrees (MOBO 30 degrees and HD 42 degrees) - do these seem normal?

  • Battery drains while sleeping after RAM upgrade

Installed 16 GB of RAM and a Hybrid/SSD 1 TB internal HD on MacBook Pro 15" mid 2012 and now the battery drains while the computer is in sleep mode, about 1-3 % per hour. Before the RAM upgrade (stock 4 GB of RAM) there was no noticeable battery drain, so I assume it has to do with the upgrade. I read that it takes more power to maintain 16 GB of RAM during sleep, so my questions are as follows:
    Is 1-3% per hour normal?
Will resetting the SMC help the issue?
Does the Hybrid HD have anything to do with this?
I am not too happy about the battery drain as it happens that I don't use my laptop for some time and prior to the upgrade the loss of battery charge was not an issue at all. Is this the price I have to pay for maxing out my RAM or is there a way (resets, settings, etc) to reduce the amount of battery loss
    Thanks for your input.

Hi everybody. I have the same question. I have a macbook unibody late 2008. I have recently upgraded the OS to Yosemite. In order to have a smoother functioning of the system I have immediately replaced my original 2Gb (1+1) RAM with 8 Gb (4+4). Since then, I have noticed a dramatic reduction of my battery charge during sleep mode. Now after 8 hours of sleep it goes from 100% to around 65% (before it was 95%). Is it a natural consequence of having installed a larger RAM or there could be anything wrong with my settings?
I have read a couple of articles about standby mode and standbydelay setting but this does not apply to my model of macbook.

  • Mac mini won't boot after RAM upgrade.

Tried installing new RAM in my Mac Mini, 512MB stock to 2GB of Crucial. Followed the directions to a T, grounded myself the whole time.
    Things I've tried so far:
    1. Resetting the PRAM, no luck.
    2. Holding option at start-up, shows no icon.
    3. Holding shift, no luck.
    4. Holding X, nothing.
How do I get it to accept a CD if it won't boot?

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
You clearly have a problem, but you don't describe exactly what that is other than that your mini won't boot after the upgrade. What happens when it starts up? Does it attempt to start and hang up on the grey or blue screens, or does it start beeping at you almost immediately after you try and start it up, and also flash the power light?
If the former, then you may have dislodged a connector while working inside the system, in which case opening it up and checking that everything is firmly connected would be the first thing to do. If the latter, then the beeping/light flashing is the system telling you it has failed the power-on self test and the pattern of beeps/lights indicates why. In your case likely the system can't find workable memory. In that instance, opening the system and ensuring that the RAM is firmly and fully seated would be a good step, and if the mini continues to fail, then replacing the new RAM with the original to test that the system will then start.
It is not likely that anything had damaged your MacOS install in the process of upgrading, thus normally no reason to need to boot to CD as a result of a RAM issue.

  • MacBook not booting after RAM upgrade

I'm sorry if the case has been already posted.
Yesterday I took my MacBook Alu unibody late 2008 to a RAM upgrade (from 2 to 4gigs) to an offical Mac Reseller. They installed it and showed me that the system loads properly and recognized the new RAM.
I took it home, started working on After Effects and Photoshop and when i wanted to check a video on Quicktime, this program refused to boot.
Then photoshop freeze and after effects did so. I quited all aplications and restarted. On restart after the 'bong' i've got the grey screen white an apple logo and a loading bar underneath, that was it, it never finished loading but shutting down.
After the 2nd try the computer gave me the BAD RAM alarm signal right before the start button was pressed and nothing more. I just managed to start it ONCE on safe mode, but this one also freezed and colapsed.
Today i didn't get the BAD ram alarm but the grey screen and loading bar after shutting down.
I took it back to the reseler, the shop boss who did the upgrade wasn't there , the guys on the morning shift placed the old RAM back resulting the same. So they told me it's a software problem, not hardware and might be caused by a failed firmware update or something i did wrong and since i was showed that the system booted after the upgrade i can't complain or argue that they did somethiing wrong.
So basically the want 80euros to check what's wrong with my computer plus the 120 i already payed them for a RAM that doesn't work and of course the repair cost of the computer.
On monday i'll go to talk to the boss, what do you guys recomend me to tell him? i'm frustrated that the guys there treat me like if i broke my computer for beeing stupid and wanted to get it fixed for free, when it clearly broke after they did something wrong on it!
    please advice me!
    thanks!

What brand is the RAM? From what you said, it is obvious that the RAM is at fault. I would simply tell them that it is not compatible and return the RAM.
Check the System Profiler to see what it says about the RAM (Apple Logo - About this Mac - More Info) and run this application to test the RAM:
    http://www.memtestosx.org/joomla/index.php
If either shows any errors, print out the results and take them with you to the store.

  • Macbook Pro is Not Booting After RAM Upgrade

    Hi,
I just upgraded the RAM in my MacBook Pro running Mountain Lion from 4gb to 8gb (Using the memory that the guy at Fry's recommended). It has been stuck on the Apple logo for about 20 minutes after the upgrade, even after I made sure that the RAM was seated properly. Is it normal for it to take this long to boot after a RAM upgrade?

I installed 8gb (2 X4gb) and it has a maximum of 8gb. I have determined that it was just bad RAM, so I will return it as soon as I can.
    Thanks.

  • Slow after RAM-upgrade

My PB 1.33 GHz PB has slowed down A LOT after switching RAMs to a larger piece. These are the specs of the module: "Kingston ValueR DDR SO-DIMM PC2700 1024MB Non-ECC, 2.5V, 128M x 64, 200p, CL2.5" The machine slows down continuously after some use to painfully creeping and the beachball spins like there's no tomorrow. In the "About this mac" it says 1.25 GB SDRAM.
I have run DU with minor repairs but to no avail. Only a restart helps for some time and the cycle starts again.
    Any advice? PRAM hard-reset??

The 12-inch PowerBooks are very meticulous about the RAM they use (haha, I'm speaking as if they're alive) and using third party RAM can ruin your machine. Even Apple highly recommends against this, and that's not their usual "buy genuine parts only" rule.
When I got my 1.5 GHz 12-incher last year, I was looking at saving money on RAM but when I read that warning, I went against it and looked for OEM RAM. You don't have to go through Apple though.
Apple uses Samsung, Micron, and a third brand that befalls my memory right now. No pun intended. I went for the Samsung RAM and no problems whatsoever, since, that is the same brand Apple uses.
Here is the warning via another site:
    http://www.macintouch.com/readerreports/badram/topic2122.html
And here is where I personally buy RAM (links to your model though):
    http://www.datamemorysystems.com/memoryselect_frame.asp?C=1213-PBG41.33-12
You can also get OEM RAM from these places:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/memory/iBooks-PowerBooks/G4-Aluminum/
**just make sure it is Samsung or Micron RAM modules, and nothing else.

  • OT: Dreamweaver quits after ram upgrade

Anyone had this senario before. I upgraded ram from 1gb to
    2gb and now
MX04 just keeps quiting on start up, lol.
I haven't done a complete reinstall of the software yet but
    any ideas
    why this should be happening?
All other software, Photoshop, Illustrator, Quark, InDesign
    appear at
    the moment to be uneffected.
    Iz a weird, weird world.
Humm I was intending to upgrade to CS4 but I'm awaiting the
    trial
    version first.
Oh well I guess I go back to other computer for the moment.

Hi Alan I have the issue with MX04 so I don't think below
    applies,
    according to this line:
'The crashes do not occur in Dreamweaver 8 or earlier (Ref.
    229536).'
Problem just started after I upgraded the ram from 1gb to
    2gb, which
seems odd, but hey I expect anything these days. Some file
    within DW I
think may have been affected by the time/date because on
    reboot I had a
warning that the computers clock/date was set to March 2001
    and may
interfere with some software, even weirder as I only
    purchased the
computer last year, so why the clock should go back to 2001 I
    don't know.
I'll try a complete reinstall and see if that clears it up,
    overwrite
the corrupt file hopefully. It doesn't matter much to be
    honest I was on
the verge of upgrading so I can live with it for now.
    Thanks for your input.

  • KT3v MS6712 System Won't power up after RAM upgrade

hello this is my first posting to this forum and I hope someone might be able to help on this as I am totally stumped.  I have been running my KT3V MS6712 mobo with 256MB since it was built. The manual for this mobo says it can handle up to 3GB RAM in any order or size. I have 3 DIMM slots and thought it would be more cost effective to just
purchase 1 DIMM leaving the other 2 slots free.  So I decided to  upgrade to 1GB and I bought a Kingston 1Gb PC2100 266MHz DIMM and installed it on my system.  Now my system won't power on at all. When I press the power button on the PC, the CPU fan spins for like 1-2 seconds then stops.  The system appears to be completely dead.  Cos I thought the problem was down to the new RAM installation I thought better put my old 256 DIMM back, however I still get the same problem. I have tried swopping both DIMMS into different slots but still doesn't work. The system was working fine until I did the RAM upgrade. I tried resetting the CMOS by moving the jumpers around in case it was a BIOS issue, still hasn't made a difference. Dunno if its the PSU which has suddenly gone, however seems strange. There are no beeps from the system or lights flashing to indicate anything.  I don't have
the D-Bracket installed either. I have also never upgraded the BIOS on this system as it has always been stable. The CPU is not overclocked. Has anyone had this problem before after a RAM upgrade?  Hope I have given you enough information

Suntek is perhaps not the best of PSU makers, but a sudden collapse is not so common. You normally notice problems earlier.
I took a big beating last time I said this , but it is important that there is no power in the system when changing memory sticks.
It sounds a bit like the processor went away for holiday. Have you any data on the processor temperature? Is there any activity at all? Does the processor heat sink get warm?

  • Unstable Mac Mini 2011 after ram upgrade

I put in 8GB kit ram from Corsair. Every specific things is matching with Apple's requirement on ram upgrade. I got Corsair 8GB KIT DDR3 SO-DIMM, 1333Mhz. The first boot with the new ram was fine but after 10 minutes of normal using (Safari, Spotify) and testing open Photoshop CS5 it crashed.
I shut down the system and tried to take off the rams the put it in again just to make sure that they're there perfectly. Second boot, everythings seems work well but after a while, maybe 20 minutes, Safari crashed and a "crash log" is sending to Apple. Happened the same with Spotify, Photoshop when it was open. I couldn't reopen the programs so I did another reboot.
The third reboot, seems fine until 1h30min the whole system crashed, the computer is rebooting by itself and showing a message of "something is wrong with the system" so it needed a reboot.
And Safari crashed once again while I wrote this.
I hope someone can help me solve the problem. I'm running the lastest version of Lion Mountain (10.8.2), 2.5Ghz i5 mid 2011 Mac mini.

I have used Corsair RAMs on multiple Macs with
a lot of success (running a 16 gig on a 2011 Mini Server
I am currently typing this on).  It may just be you got a bad
one.  It happens.  Depending on where you purchased
it should be no issue replacing.
You should check though to see which is bad.  Put
both of the old RAM in to make sure things still work
as before.  It is possible something else may be wrong.
If all is well, then swap out with one new module at a
time and see how it works.  It may be just one module
    (most likely).

  • MBP battery "Not Charging" after RAM upgrade

I brought my MBP into an apple store for the genius bar to install a 4g RAM upgrade, after i got it back it will not run on battery power. Its plugged in with green light on power adapter and battery indicates (0%) (Not Charging). Please help. My battery worked fine before bringing it into the apple store.
    Thanks.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
This sounds like the RAM installed was either not to spec, faulty, or the installer missed a step. Take it back to the store and indicate to them what happened.

  • Avoid overclock after ram upgrade on MBP late 2009

Hi guys, I'm from italy so please accept my poor english.
    The problem is the following:
I installed a couple of 4gb ram 1066 (together with a 256 SSD) and all works fine but after the upgrade the computer heats very easly.
It reaches temperatures of 70-80° (celsius) if cpu usage goes over 50-60%.
I managed it with smc-fan-control, even if it is not namely correct.
Today I was editing a video in iMovie and I recognised that in activity monitor the cpu usage wass telling 170% with respect to iMoive process.
    Is it possible???
iStat pro always tells me max 100%, but probably it's wrong because if really an overclock occured it explains my problems of temperatures after the upgrade.
Moreover, I never see a RAM usage more than a couple of Gb, so it seems that the ram is recognised, but not used properly!!
Running iBench the ram seemed to be used a lot, well above 6Gb.
    Please help me

No overclocking going on. You have a dual core cpu which can have 200% cpu activity, 100% for each core. 100 + 100 % equals 200%.
Yes doing video editing put a stain on the system and it will heat up. Since your mac is a few years old it might have some dust build up in the fans or heatsink cooling fins. Use some compressed air to blow them out.

  • MacBook Pro won't boot after ram upgrade...

Hey everybody! Hope everyone is having a great Christmas! I got a 16gb ram upgrade for my 2012 MacBook Pro 15 today and I am having some trouble with the upgrade. Its an odd problem. I installed the two 8gb sticks no problem, but when I try and boot into OS X the machine shows the apple logo with the spinning wheel underneath, and then it just shuts itself off. I don't know what the problem is. The machine boots fine into my Windows 7 partition, and registers both sticks of ram. OS X restore also boots no problem and lets me reinstall OS X, which is what I am doing currently. IDK if this is just because of a hardare change or what. The ram I installed is Adata pc3 12800 1600mhz ram, so it should be supported.

Replace the Ram, buy from OWC or Crucial, buy the Ram Apple recommend, don't rely on "it should work"
