Powerbook G4 Airport Card Missing?

I have a powerbook g4 and once a working wireless airport card. It used to work fine but recentely my computer claims that i have no airport card installed and the airport status menu is missing from the top righthand bar. Why would I use to have this hardware but somehow missing it now?

Firstwelcome to the discussions.
It might be something like the antenna wire has come loose or even the Airport Extreme Card ahs dislodged. It may also be you need to Verify and repair permissions.

You might also go up to the signal strength indicator at the top menu bar and single click on it and be sure the Airport is On.
Don't forget to restart your computer, or even shut it clear off for a couple of minutes and allow it to reset your system.

A simple Question: Can a Powerbook kill Airport Cards?
After I experienced some kernel panics, I checked the logs and realised the problem had something to do with the Airport Card. When I switched cards with my eMac it worked again for 10 minutes, before another kernel panic shut off the PB.
When I put the card back in the eMac again, it wasn't recognised by the System Profiler anymore.
Now both cards won't work in both machines.

How to set up wired PowerBook (dead airport card) to wireless network

The airport card in our PowerBook isn't working and not worth fixing. I wanted to hook it up via Ethernet to Clearwire modem, but it appears there is only one Ethernet port on it which I have to use for my airport express for my iMac to access. There is a USB port on the airport but didn't know if that would do anything. Darn, I'm usually good at this stuff, so please help!

The PowerBook is about 6 years old, apple called it vintage. Although it has airport in it, this happened once before where the antenna or whatever came dislodged. Hubby likes to fall asleep with laptop in... His lap!
I also have a 2008 iMac running off the same airport and was trying to see if I could daisy chain something up. I have a FireWire cable too. I hear you smiling...
So if you can explain what a wireless USB adapter is I'd appreciate it. I thought I could just hook it straight up to my modem or airport express but apparently each have only one Ethernet.
I'm the kind that sits and looks at what I have, so never would have thought about buying more stuff! :)

Airport card missing after 10.6.5

Yesterday I updated to 10.6.5. Today afternoon my MacBook pro suddenly hung on me and became completely non responsive to keyboard mouse or trackpad. Only option I had was to shutdown using power button. When I rebooted my airport card was not detected anymore. Tried reset smc and no dice. Uninstalled from network options but now I when try to reinstall no airport card option available. Not detected by airport utility. Tried repair permissions as well. Desperately looking for solutions.

Do you have a Time machine backup you can go back to ? I would recommend going by an Apple Store and have them look at it.

Is anyone else having trouble after recently having an airport card fitted?
I got mine fitted on the 9th and it was fine for around 4 days then I ran the parallels RC1 then that caused a kernel panic after that I have struggled to get a day uptime without my finder screwing up and not being able to shut down, so I took out the airport card and I think it is fine

The airport card in my Mac Pro tends to drop its connection to my router quite frequently (even when my Powerbook's airport card maintains a perfect connection). I also have trouble with the Mac Pro's connection to Bluetooth keyboard and mouse; the mouse tracks very inaccurately at times, and the keyboard seems to develop a life of its own (i.e., I type a letter and it appears 10 to 20 times even though I hit the key only once). I have therefore taken to using wired devices (sad).

Airport Card no longer recognized by PowerBook

I always take my PowerBook G4 to class with me for the purpose of taking notes during class. I was connected to the internet there, over the wireless network (on campus) with no problem.
When I got back home, my PowerBook wasn't seeing the wireless network (at home, seperate from the wireless network on campus), but I knew it was working because my iMac is connected to it just fine, along with two other computers in my house. I tried restarting a couple of times, and actually typing the name of the network into the Airport drop-down menu. This all did nothing, as did repairing the disk permissions.
I find it very unlikely that the card is not seated correctly, because first of all, when I brought the PowerBook back from campus (when it was working properly) it was tranported in my TUMI bag, which has a dedicated padded holder for PowerBooks, and then immediately took it out and sat it on my desk next to my iMac only to find the PowerBook no longer seeing the wireless signal.
And at this point, I could still turn Airport on and off, and I restarted the computer a couple of times to see if it would pick up the signal, all the while Airport was still recognized by the system (I could still turn it off and on from the drop-down menu, but no wireless networks were present).
So, I popped in my OS X DVD to boot from it to use the Repair Disk feature. It came up with an error that said something to the tune of "incorrect number of threads." It repaired the disk without any probems, or so I thought (and so it thought).
Now, the computer wouldl not function because it runs into a kernal panic, forcing me to hard shut-down the computer. It happened everytime, sometimes during startup, sometimes not until I got into OS X, but always soon after the OS starts.
I then booted the computer as a "Safe boot" and this seemed to stop the kernal panics, and I shut down the computer and started it again with no panics. There was no longer any recognition of the Airport card, either. Not even through the Airport Setup Assistant. It keeps telling me there is no card installed.
I have tried two seperate cards, as I thought maybe the one went bad, but nothing came of this. I tried zapping the PRAM, booting into Open Firmware to reset to defaults, all leading to nothing. I even went so far as to completely erase the drive and do a clean install of OS X, which now drops my system down to 10.4. NOTHING.
Please, anyone willing to help that would be great, even if you would like to contact me through iChat and we can discuss this over iSight to get to the root of the problem. Screen name is CoreyAtMiamiU.

This is a user to user discussion area. So it is unpredictable as to when someone with a suggestion will respond to your post. An hour in the middle of a work day isn't a long time.
Since the card is recognized, there isn't anything wrong with that side of the card. If the card isn't receiving a signal, either the RF side of the card has failed, the antenna wire isn't connected properly, or the antenna in the PowerBook has failed.

Cannot install Airport on my old Powerbook G4 - BTHomehub network quotes "password incorrect" although it isn't. Same settings work OK on my iMac, G5 and other Powerbook G4. Is there a fault on the Airport card?

I have recently re-installed 10.4 on my old Powerbook G4 with success apart from the Airport network.
Using BTHomeHub (which I use successfully on my other Powerbook G4, iMac and G5) I get the message that the password is incorrect, which I know it isn't as the other macs are OK. Is there a fault with the Airport card?

Hi Frank, is the BTHomeHub using WPA2 encryption perchance?
The original 802.11b Airport card cannot do WPA2, and may need a firmware update to do WPA if the earlier of the original Airport cards.

How do I know if my PowerBook G4 is airport ready? What kind of airport card would I use?

According to Apple Specifications, your PB would require the original AirPort Card.
Unfortunately, Apple no longer supplies these, however, there are several vendors (Caveat Emperor) out there that still do.

Airport card for powerbook G4 12" Aluminum

I have a powerbook G4 12" aluminum and I have looked everywhere for an airport card. I have gotten two original airport cards and they did not fit,these cards are just a smidge too wide for the card slot. I know there is an apple card that will fit it because it had one installed at one point. I do recall a comment that there was a "small" airport card for the 12" aluminum but I have had no success in locating one. Can someone please help?

Yes, you could, but sometimes those people charge more than Apple does for its refurbished ones. And Apple's comes with a one-year warranty, while the eBay people usually don't, unless it's an eBay storefront seller. (Whatever they're called).
So, use your best judgment. Coming from me who buys things on eBay a lot, I'm not saying eBay is bad. But just comparing the two ($29 with a one-year warranty and straight from Apple, versus whatever price on eBay, same/higher/less than Apple's price, but possibly without warranty, etc., in this case, Apple would be the best bet).

Just looked over at eBay and did a search for "Airport Extreme Card" and the prices for Buy It Now range from $24.00 to $40.00. Current bids for those that are bid-only range from $0.99 to $18.00. So $29 from Apple isn't bad at all. (I do not work for Apple, by the way).

Powerbook purchased in 2003 has no airport card?

The manual says my powerbook is equipped with AirPort Extreme wireless technology, but system profiler says, "no information found" about the AirPort card.
I never tried to connect to a wireless lan until I tried today and nothing happened – no automatic hook-up.
What's up? I have the "technology," but no card? Is this right? Do I need to purchase a card now?
Any suggestions?

OK, I looked under the battery and there's a serial number posted there for an airport extreme card.
I never had a need to try to use the airport card since I purchased the computer and now that I have tried it, it's pretty distressing to find that it is either broken, loose or was never installed.
As much as I love Apple computers, this really doesn't do much to make me happy with the company. I feel like I was cheated.
Anyhow, thanks to the folks who helped solve the problem for me.
Duane, is there any information you could give me about opening the case to check to see if the board is not installed properly or is loose? I'm looking specifically for any warnings about things I should avoid doing.

Adding Airport card to 867mhz Ti Powerbook?

I have a 867mhz Titanium Powerbook that i need to add an Airport card too, how do do this and what will it (roughly) cost?

Just an added note to eww's info: I checked ebay a couple of months ago, and people were selling supposedly new/sealed cards for over $100, used a little under that.
Make sure you get an ORIGINAL AP card, NOT an Extreme or the newer version. You may also want to consider a PCMCIA wireless card (fits in PC card slot). Most people get better distance, they're cheaper, and you can get the "g" style (54mbps instead of 11). The drawback is that it takes up that slot and sticks out the side 3/4 of an inch or so. Some brands work seamlessly with Apple's built-in AP software.

Where can I buy a replacement AirPort Card for a PowerBook?

My old G3 Firewire PowerBook is having problems recognizing my AirPort Base Station. I think the internal AirPort Card is intermittent. Where can I buy a replacement Apple AirPort card ? My local Apple Store claims that they are no longer available now that the Extreme cards are standard issue.

Airport card(s) for Power PC G5 and Powerbook G4

I would like to set up an Airport base station to connect my Power PC G5 (dual 2 ghz with 5GB of SDRAM and OS 10.5.8) and my PowerBook G4 (550 Mhz, 512 MB SDRAM and OS 10.4.6). Can someone tell me what combination of base station (Airport Extreme?) and Airport cards would be appropriate for this setup and recommend a supplier, since I suspect cards may be hard to find for these older computers?

I would just add that either card - Airport/Airport extreme will work with any base that supports the 802.11 a/b/g and now n standard - basically all. You can buy an n with an eye toward future upgrades but I use an a/b/g Airport Extreme, several years old that I'm happy with. So, you can look at saving money and getting a generation obsolete if it's just for home. To put it into perspective, the a/b standards were 8 or 9 Mb transfer rate, IIRC, and the g brought it to 54 Mb. Consider the size of network and the size of your ISP "pipe" (ISP data rate) you have.
As far as Airport cards are concerned, the earlier poster is correct. I would just add that there are physical differences between Airport and Airport Extreme cards so they indeed are not interchangeable. The Airport - Powerbook g4 500/550, etc. - uses a card with an end connector, that is, a plastic socket perpendicular to the card which mates to an adapter bracket in the computer. The Airport extreme has an edge connector ("pin" lands right on the edge of the card) which slides right into a socket on the board. Your generation of powerbook would likely use the former (I have a pb g4 500MHz titanium which uses Airport; my pb g4 1.67 GHz uses Extreme).
Go to System Profiler/network/airport and that will tell you if you have a card installed and which one.

Airport Card (Powerbook) not seeing network after Update

Using software update, I updated the Airport file. Somehow it seems to have knobbled my airport card and which now wont recognise my netgear dg834gt modem.
I've been trying to fix this for two days now. grrr.
Is this update for Base stations and Express units only? hmm.
Is it possible there may be a shift in the password access? Maybe I need to reconfigure the router? I am currently trying all possibilities.....
I'm on a Powerbook 1.25 @ 10.3.9 - and have reinstalled the essential system software, but I think this screwed things up even more. My main Admin name has also been changed to 'root' ?
The router seems to be fine, (connected via ethernet right now) but the airport just wont find the network and i'm sitting right next to it -- ??
All was fine before -- but now it sleeps. boo.
Am looking all over all help sites and forums but can find no answers yet -

Update;
Things are looking v. dodgy for PB. have archived and installed, but still a dead Airport. Can this all have been done by an airport update?! -- hmm. Maybe a full erase & install will help. Maybe its something stoopid I've not done in my Airport network prefs...?
Airport Pref. 1 is set to 'Automatic'
TCP/IP is set to 'DHCP'
Apple talk is 'off'
Proxies -- all are not ticked. (is this correct?) Passive FTP box is ticked.
Am reconfiguring Netgear as should be done - restarting, P.B., etc...
The more this goes on, the more i'm feeling somethings blown up in the ariport card. grrr.

Switching Ti Powerbook Airport card to iBook G3 , need advice

I have a Ti Powerbook G4 1GHz running OS 10.4.5 and recently got my husband a G3 ibook 600 MHz running 10.2.8. I want to get him up and running wirelessly so I thought I would install my Airport card in his book and look for something else or my Powerbook. Do all the 3rd party cards hang out of the laptop and/or have antennas that extend? He surfs about three times a week, I am online 2 or more times a day. I would rarther not have somthing that hangs out or can get caught. However I thought it would be a plus to have my system on 802.11g.....
Is there a better solution for his system? I am just looking into it and would appreciate anyone's advice on options for our systems.

Zyvette,Welcome to Apple Discussions.
This sounds like a good plan.
The iBook needs an original Airport card that the Ti has.
Check out this site which has the manuals for all Macs - choose your models and the Airport card instructions are in there.
You certainly can put a 802.11g card in your Ti - it will stick out a little, but it's that or spending $100+ or so on a 2nd hand original Airport card on ebay.
Alternatively I have seen one of these cards crammed inside an Airport slot with some modifications - see this post.
