PowerBook G4 Airport Extreme b/g need upgrade to N. Is it possible

I have a problem trying to upgrade the Airport Extreme on this PowerBook G4. Its running 10.5.8 and has a PowerPC processor. The Airport came with the machine.
Its currently suggesting its capable of working on B and G networks. I found this info in the Network Utils. After I upgraded the router to the Linksys WRT320N and set it to 5Ghz it does want to play ball.
Also got an iMac G4 10.4 (retro dome) that can't connect either.
Apparently this N 5Ghz is the future. According to the rest of us, so is wireless. I currently have a £140 wireless router with a bunch of wires crawling across the floor from it. PlayStation 3 can't cope with it either!
The Intel MacBook works fine although Safari had some issues with updating the routers firmware via the web browser interface.
I believe that apple had issued some updates for the Airport a short time ago and figured that this would go across the board with all their Airport Extreme cards. Does anyone have any insight, if or when this might happen before I go off and buy hundreds of wireless USB adapters to find the one that works with these Macs?
Any help here would be greatly appreciated...

Your older equipment cannot operate wirelessly in the 5 GHz band. A firmware update cannot supply the needed hardware upgrade.
You would seem to have two options:
1) Reconfigure your Wi-Fi equipment to support 802.11g (2.4 GHz).
2) Buy a USB 802.11n adapter for each of your old devices. It shouldn't be hard to determine which ones will work with your Macs. Whatever you buy, be sure that it works with the USB ports (USB 1.1 vs. USB 2.0).

please help me i have a cabin in the mountains that is off the grid... and i use solar power... i have my internet access via wifi and an antenna... it goes to a d-link router in my electric room then from there via a cat 5 cable to a apple airport extreme base station... and i would like to plug the camera into the base station via a cat 5 cable....
i am trying to set up a network camera to via a airport extreme base station.... the tech support on the camera end (airlink 101 skyIP cam500 model aicn500) said to enable port 80 and to assign a IP address (which i have)... apple support has been unable to help me after almost 1 hour with tech support.... here is what the camera tech support page suggests....
You will now need to forward the Second HTTP Port through your router to the IP address of the camera. If you have an AirLink101 router, we have instructions in our knowledge base for port forwarding. If you have a router from another company, you will need to contact them for instructions on port forwarding.
When accessing the camera from a remote location you will need to open a browser and type in the internet IP address of your network (not the ip address of the camera) and the port into a web browser. The address and port will need to be typed in like this:
    http://x.x.x.x:port
    x.x.x.x = Internet IP address
    port = Second HTTP Port
Here is an example of what it would look like: http://123.123.123.123:81
    can anyone please help me?

i can not thank you enough for taking the time time to help me!!! i really appreciate it.... i have done the set up with the d link router and am now trying to access the camera from the web.... but i am having trouble logging in and finding it? i am not sure what ip address to enter into my web browser? i think that i need to add the ip addresss folllowed by a forward slash and then the port # 80.... but what ip address should i add? in the device info part of the d link router i have found a number of ip address's... but none of them seem to work? what am i doing wrong? or not doing? my apple base station is set up in the bridge mode with a password to protect it...

  • PowerBook G4s' AirPort Extreme Cards-b or g?

How can I tell if the built-in AirPort Extreme cards on my PowerBook G4s (a 2 1/2 year-old 15" and two 12" PBs under two years old) have 802.11g or not? System Monitor does not indicate which; it only shows the Wireless Card Firmware Version: 405.1 (3.90.34.0.p18).

  • If I have airport extreme do I need airport express?

I want to add wireless printers to my network. I use airport extreme already. Do I also need Airport Express?

You could also buy any non-wifi printer, hook it up to Airport Express via USB. It has its merits.
    You get some benefits:
you get an audio out on AEX, in case you want to run some speakers in the area where your printer is located
AEX (in bridged mode) will extend your signal coverage in the area, so your WiFi coverage gets wider around your house
If you use a hub on AEX, you could hook up a printer and an external drive to it
You would set up the AEX in Airport Utility, which you already know, so there would be no other software to learn
Airport Express costs on apple refurb store only $69.

  • Airport Extreme 7.1 Firmware Upgrade - problems with Airdisk

I recently upgraded the Airport Extreme firmware from 7.0 to 7.1 but have experienced several problems.
After the initial upgrade, I encountered a double NAT warning, which was fixed by switching into Bridge mode, followed by an invalid IP address warning. I rebooted the AE and the warning disappeared.
Connecting to the wireless network is ok, except that it can never remember my connection (which is a closed WPA2 Personal network) and I have to manually re-connect every time I switch on the nac - with my previous Airport Express this would remember the network and re-connected automatically.
Worst of all however is that I can no longer see my AirDisk - a LaCie 500 GB USB HD connected to the AE.
The disk name is simply upper case ASCII and so I cannot understand why this is occurring. It worked perfectly using version 7.0. Has anyone else had these problems or aware of a workaround?

The 7.1 update has caused problems for many many people.
What I did to solve problems was to revert back to 7.0. here's a link to a post I made over at jmacrumors.com explaining how to do it:

  • Airport Extreme giving errors after upgrading to ML Server

With OS X Server, your machine sees your Airport Extreme and can then configure it by opening ports, etc. once you turn on services. I upgraded from OS X Lion Server to ML Server and everything was fine for a second. Now whenever I click on the Extreme in the panel, I get the following error:

I don't know if this will help but here's what happened today.
While I was out of the house, I wanted to see if the VPN connection was still active and working on my phone. It told me that it couldn't log in so no big deal. I figured I'd check it when I got home.
I got home and checked the Server settings for VPN and sure enough, it was off. I turned the VPN setting to ON and let it write its information. I then went to the AEBS tab on the left pane and it asked me for the password. Once I put in the password for the AEBS, it worked just fine.
So far what I've done was erase any Keychain passwords related to the AEBS and turned on VPN service to get it working. Don't know if that'll work for everyone else but hopefully it does. Seems it's a tiny bug that should be stomped out rather quickly as it's a huge piece of OS X Server.

  • This is a common question, and i apologize, but I have yet to see an answer.  I'm in the UK.  I have bought an Airport Extreme.  I need to buy a moden (not a combined router/modem, presumably.)  I cannot find one in stores or on the web.  Please help.

I need a modem to go with my new Airport Extreme.  I assume I cannot connect with my existing Router/Modem.  I can't find a product either in stores or on the net.  I know this is a common question, but I have yet to find a suitable answer.  Any advice for a fairly low tech guy?

I'm glad you're able to use your current router. Sorry I can't help with your new issue, but I just wanted to add for the benefit of anyone else reading this thread - the X-Modem M3 still seems to be available from the manufacturers, this is the site I originally got it from and it's still for sale there:

Thought I'd mention, as when I got my Airport I spent ages looking for a really small neat modem to use with it and this was the best I could find so other people might be interested too.

  • External hard drive on Airport Extreme Base Station - need some help!!

Can you suggest an external drive make and model that works with the extreme? Need around 300 gb?
What format should the drive be in so my Windows Vista and Windows 7 and my mac will be able to backup to it?
What backup software do you recommend that I run on my Windows Vista and Windows 7 PC to it?
    Thanks

Can you suggest an external drive make and model that works with the extreme? Need around 300 gb?
There are literally dozens of external USB hard drives that will work with the 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn), but of course, not all. Please check out the following iFelix site to see some that are not recommended. FWIW, I currently use both a Newertech miniStack v3 (750 GB) & a Western Digital MyPassport (500 GB) with my AEBSn without any issues.
What format should the drive be in so my Windows Vista and Windows 7 and my mac will be able to backup to it?
HFS+ for the most efficiency between the AEBSn & the drive(s). Note that the AEBSn's file server will support both AFP & SMB when communicating between Mac & PCs (respectively) for file services. If you don't have a Mac, you can always format the drive in FAT32. Only NTFS (or any of the Linux partition formats) will not be supported by the AEBSn file service.
What backup software do you recommend that I run on my Windows Vista and Windows 7 PC to it?
I use Genie - soft's Genie Backup Manager, but just about any backup software that supports network-attached drives for backups should be fine.

  • Airport Extreme 7.5.2 upgrade problems

I have upgraded my Airport Extreme to 7.5.2 firmware and I have lost wireless connection with my Mac Book Pro 17" 2006. I use 5 MHz frequency with Airport Extreme and I have noticed that after the upgrade, the Airport goes immediately to communication channel (which is set to automatic and there no way I can change being this a first generation Airport Extreme) # 100 while with firmware 7.4.2 the channel stays at 36 which is working with my Mac Book Pro 17".  Any one has any idea why there is this problem ?  My Mac is with 10.5: do you think it may be different with 10.6 OS ?
Thank you very much for your help.

There are dozens of free utilities on the Internet that will display a "closed network" in seconds, so while the "option" might keep a few honest neighbors from seeing the name of your wireless network, it won't do anything to keep any 12 year old kid from seeing your network if he wants to.
Have you thought about the fact that hackers view a "closed" network as a more valuable target? You might want to think about that one.

  • Airport Extreme Base Station - Need to extend network for extra distance

The literature on this topic is sparse. I have an Airport Extreme base station. I will like to "extend the signal" so that it is stronger in part of house. I would like to buy a product that will do this. Questions:
I think this is called "bridging".
    1. Can I do this with the Airport Express as a 2nd unit??
    2. Does the Airport Extreme work with other WDS 2nd units like Netgear?
    3. Is there a darned manual to tell you how to configure the settings on BOTH stations?
    Thanks.

How new is your Extreme? I ask because if your Extreme supports 802.11n, the setup process will be greatly simplified.

  • Getting Airport Extreme N but need ideas for PC Wireless card

I will be getting the Airport Extreme N router to help improve speed and range. I would get the Apple Airport express but it is not Wireless N Capable. So what should i get for my PC?

Unless your custom built XP has an N Card you will not get the benifits of the N Draft Speed and distance.
Depending on the Motherboard , there may not even be an N draft card available for the PC.
Many of the computers that are built even today are not capable unless you add external device if capable.

  • Airport Extreme - Configuration Help Needed PLease

    Hi All,
I've just replaced my old Airport Extreme with the new 5th Gen product. I successfully migrated the settings from the old product and got the new one working pretty quickly - I am however slightly confused about the 2.4 GHz and 5GHz bands.
My understanding is that on the 'default' settings then the Airport will broadcast both a 2.4 and 5GHz signal with the same name and 'older' computers and my iPhones will pick up the 2.4GHz signal whereas 'newer' computers like my MacBook Pro will pick up the 5GHz signal. This doesn't seem to work however and my MacBook Pro is connects to the 2.4GHz band.
I tried renaming the 5GHz channel in the options to ****5GHz and the MacBook connected to this fine and gave me a noticeably faster connection. However when I did this the 2.4GHz devices slowed to a crawl and became unusable and the signal strength on these devices seemed to reduce noticeably.
Am I correct in assuming that I should be able to hook up 2.4GHz enabled devices to the 2.4GHz channel and 5GHz enabled devices to the 5GHz channel? If so I would really appreaciate some pointers as to how to stop the 5GHz band from crippling the 2.4GHz devices.
Thanks in advance of your help.

Typically, wireless devices will connect to the network with the strongest signal. Depending on the distance (or obstacles like walls, ceilings, floors, etc.), the device may connect to the 2.4 GHz band instead of the 5 GHz band. In practice, the 5 GHz band is only useable in the same room due to signal probagation loss characteristics of higher frequencies.
Keeping in mind that 802.11n can operate on both bands, "n" clients may select the 2.4 GHz band if it finds the signal quality better on this band.
Also keep in mind that non-"n" clients, when connected, will degrade the overall bandwidth on either band: "b" & "g" clients on the 2.4 GHz band and "a" clients on the 5 GHz band. If you don't have a requirement to support any of these non-"n" clients, I would suggest that you change the Radio Mode to: 802.11n only (5 GHz) - 802.11n only (2.4 GHz)
