Powerbook G4 Aluminium 1,67 GHz keeps sleeping when fully charged

Hi!
Just got a Powerbook from a friend of mine for no small price, and am feeling as if I made a HUGE mistake.
It worked perfect for 3 weeks and suddenly since yesterday, once the battery is fully charged and the indicator lamp turns green, the Powerbook would suddenly go to sleep. I wake it up again only to make it go back to sleep. It works fine when I remove the power cable and run it on battery, or when the Powerbook is charging.
I tried looking in the system log but the dreaded Trackpad line "Power Management received emergency overtemp signal. Going to sleep", is nowhere to be found, instead I have a line like "kernel[0]: hibernate image path: /var/vm/sleepimage" and it goes to sleep immediately after. Nothing precedes this line.
I am stymied, some say it is a logic board problem. My PB has 2 year warranty from the store I bought it from, I can take it back, but the loss in production time would be a lot : ( Any help?
PB G4 SD, HD 1,67   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

Hey Dave,
Thanks for your input. I did install "Temperature Monitor" after reading your responses on other forum threads. There are no untoward spikes, though as the day progresses and I open more documents or do CPU intensive tasks, the temperature naturally spikes. I have had up to 62°C (143F) CPU temperatures and 45°C (113F) HDD and Trackpad temperatures. These I thought were under the temp specs mentioned in the program.
As I work in a huge greenhouse affected room , with the summer coming up, the temperatures in the room go up to 85F, and the PB keeps sleeping ever more often. Well it is back to AppleCare with this. Disappointed though.

  • Keep using when fully charged and plugged in?

I was wondering if i can continue to watch netflix while my MBP is fully charged and plugged into AC power. Does this hurt the battery, or should I be okay? Any answers are greatfully accepted!!

Leaving it plugged in is much better for the battery (as long as it's not overheated) than unplugging it and letting it empty out frequently. I leave mine plugged in for the entire work day, unplugging only to transport it in the morning and evening, and after over a year it still has 97% of its original capacity.
Also, on the Apple laptops that have non-removable batteries, Apple says there is no need for the "completely discharge once a month" calibration procedure. In other words, if you have a newer Apple laptop where the battery can't be removed, those are essentially maintenance-free. You just use it.

The quickest way (and really the only way) to charge your iPad is with the included 10W USB Power Adapter. iPad will also charge, although more slowly, when attached to a computer with a high-power USB port (many recent Mac computers) or with an iPhone Power Adapter (5W). When attached to a computer via a standard USB port (most PCs or older Mac computers) iPad will charge very slowly (but iPad indicates not charging). Make sure your computer is on while charging iPad via USB. If iPad is connected to a computer that’s turned off or is in sleep or standby mode, the iPad battery will continue to drain.
Apple recommends that once a month you let the iPad fully discharge & then recharge to 100%.
How to Calibrate Your Mac, iPhone, or iPad Battery

At this link http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/galaxy-tab-android-tablet,3014-11.html , tests show that the iPad 2 battery (25 watt-hours) will charge to 90% in 3 hours 1 minute. It will charge to 100% in 4 hours 2 minutes. The new iPad has a larger capacity battery (42 watt-hours), so using the 10W charger will obviously take longer. If you are using your iPad while charging, it will take even longer. It's best to turn your new iPad OFF and charge over night. • Does keeping a macbook pro plugged in even when fully charged damage the battery in any way?

Does keeping a macbook pro plugged in even when fully charged damage the battery?

no it will not, your battery stops charging when it reaches 100%.  you can verify this if you'd like to through system report - power.
once in a while however, it's best to use it under it's own power and charge it back up once it's down to 75% to keep the battery in optimal condition.

  • My Ipod Classic keeps shutting down, even when fully charged

I have upgraded my Ipod classic operating system and all was well. Suddenly, it has started shutting down after 5 minutes of use, even when the battery is fully charged.

What iPod software version? Restore the iPod again
But maybe it is just set to sleep in 5 minutes.
Check the settings and set it to OFF

  • My nano goes to sleep after removing the charger when fully charged

After around 3 years I start to use my ipod again. It can charge perfectly fine but when I removed the charger when it's fully charged, it goes to sleep. I can't turn it on afterwards. Is it not working because the battery is "dead"?  I can do everything just fine but I can't use it unless it's charging.

Considering that the iPod wasn't used for 3 years, it's likely that the battery is dead and in need of replacement.  You can have Apple service it for a flat fee or you can send it into a 3rd party repair company for a little less.

  • HT201263 iPad screen went black when fully charged and would not come out of sleep mode, turn on or off and did nothing when connected to USB port?

I really do not want to restore this iPad if I can find another solution.  I had to let the battery drain completely in order to prepare it for restore, so I'm prepared to do that if I must.

    Reset iPad
Hold down the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears
Note: Data will not be affected.

  • IPhone 5 keeps shutting down and needs rebooting even when fully charged?

My iPhone 5 keeps shutting down when left unattended. This requires a full reboot and this doesn't always work either. Sometimes it requires a full reboot several times. Has anyone else had this problem?

I am having the same issue with my iPhone 5s. I travelled to the UK and my phone started having this issue over there (i have turned the cellular data off). I restored my phone last night but when it asked me to set it up again, i chose for it to set up from the back up i had stored on my Mac. The problem is still presistent even though it is shutting down less often. I am going to restore it to the factory settings tonight and see if I keep getting the same issue I will take it to a Mac Genius. However if it works i will let you know

    Hi yanksfancvh,
Thanks for visiting Apple Support Communities.
If your iPod is not staying powered on and you have already restored it to factory settings, it likely needs to be serviced. The following link should help you get started with the process and has links with additional information on topics such as warranty and service pricing, battery replacement, and express replacement service.

  • Powerbook won't wake from sleep when unplugged from power

    hi everyone,
    i have a 15" 1ghz titanium powerbook, running 10.4.6.
recently (maybe since 10.4.6?) i haven't been able to wake the machine from sleep when i unplug it from powering up in sleep mode, to open it up someplace else to run it on batteries for a little while. i always have to do a hard-reboot (holding down the startup button for several seconds). this usually destroys my dock and other preferences when i'm "back in".
does anyone know what might be causing this? it seems to be a recent development. it's unpleasant, because i frequently have the powerbook charge itself while asleep, and then i want to unplug it and quickly do something in another room running it on batteries. afaik sleeping and awakening works fine as long as i don't plug/unplug the power cable before waking it up.
any hints would be greatly appreciated...thank you!

    PowerBook G4 15 1 GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

    Hi A.L.,
I have a Cinema Display which I often use on the back of my Ti. I know the laptop will not wake if there is no power and it has an external DVI display attached.
Perhaps your computer thinks it has some monitor attached - perhaps checking the DVI port for damage would be worth it?

  • PowerBook G4 not going to sleep when closed???

My 15-inch 1.67 GHz PowerBook doesn't go to sleep when closed. The Apple on the back on the display stays lit and the display doesn't go dark either. Anyone have any ideas???

Check that your sleep magnet hasn't fallen. Take something made of steel like a paperclip, and see if it sticks to the outside of the case above the Apple logo. If not, the magnet inside may have moved. When the cover is closed, the magnet is directly over and affects the trackpad area. If you have a magnet (like on your refrigerator), wave it over the trackpad and it should go to sleep.

  • How to deactivate a shared Hard drive on Airport Extreme - keeps sleeping

was curious if anyone one knows how to temporally deactivate a shared Hard drive on Airport Extreme - keeps sleeping every 30mins and have to wait 12 second for the drive to spin up and wait for the beach ball to stop spinning. Getting really aggravating.... Thanks

The external harddrive is NTFS format and someone from apple told me that it would have to be reformatted to be seen by the Extreme -- Needless to say with 33% of the hard drive filled, I do NOT want to reformat.
Unfortunately, HDDs attached to the USB port of the AirPort Extreme, cannot be recognized by the AirPort if formatted in NTFS. If you do not wish to reformat this drive, you will either have to use a different drive or connect this drive to a Windows PC for sharing on the network.
The AirPort can only share drives formatted in HFS+ or FAT32.

  • Macbook keeps sleeping

A while ago my Macbook, (aluminium, late 2008 model) stopped going to sleep when the lid was closed so I just used to put it to sleep via the menu but then it started to wake up whilst closed, the apple lid light would go on and stay on, so then I would shut it down completely. Now, when I start it up it gets past the grey screen with the apple logo but then the screen goes black and the sleep light begins to pulse. When I am able to start it up properly and everything loads then I check emails or use Safari or TextEdit the screen will go black at any time and the sleep light will come on again. When any key is pressed the screen flashes but still doesn't come back on and sometimes I can see whatever was on the desktop momentarily (backlight?) then that disappears as well.
I have done the SMC and the PRAM. I have set the energy saver to never. I have verified and repaired using Disk Utility. I have tried the magnet thing to see if it is the "reed" switch relating to the clamshell. I used Terminal to verify that the sleep mode is 3. Finally I have erased the hardrive and installed Snow Leopard. The problem was sorted for a day, slept on closing the lid etc but then the problem returned.
I cannot do a Hardware test as I have misplaced the disk. I can only find similiar problems relating to the Macbook Pro, something to do with the graphics card? I have read about wires in the hinge, relating to the backlight, becoming crimped but I am not very experienced with technicalities. Should I just suck it up and take it into an Apple store to get diagnosed? I have avoided that only because I have no idea how much it would cost.
I would gratefully and humbley accept any help or advice anyone could offer but be kind and simple if possible.
      Thank you

Thanks Carolyn but the magsafe is working, the battery charges fully and its life/cycles are fine. Think I will have to take it in to be looked at but its out of warranty so will have to make sure there's plent of moola in my bank account!
