Extra Display with ARD

When I login to one of my clients (Powerbook G4) via ARD, it has two displays which show in ARD. They are not evident when the machine is being used as a standalone. This has the effect of hiding windows etc. I have partly solved it from a user perspective by mirroring but want to get rid of the extra display. Am trying to reset NVRAM etc, but need to do it from afar.
Any other thoughts.

I just tried this with my 12" G4 Powerbook.
I set up a second display, and then controlled it using Remote Desktop on my iMac. While ARD was active, I removed the second display and noticed that the application windows I had on the second display did not move to the main display, and I could still move my mouse to the second monitor. The only way I could see the "phantom" display was via Screen Sharing or ARD.
Luckily, a simple reboot with the display disconnected seems to have resolved the issue (no resetting of NVRAM is necessary).
Going the other direction (ie, removing a display from the imac, which is running SnowLeopard), seemed to work fine. After I removed the second display the windows moved to the main display and ARD displayed the correct window.

Hissing Sound with Extra Display

Hello
I'm hearing a hiss through my speakers (connected through a firewire Apogee Duet) when I connect an extra display to the DVI port. This goes away when I turn off Airport.
I'm currently using a Mac Cinema Display 24" with a Gefen adaptor mini display port to DVI.
However, I had this same problem with a Samsung display.

but it can be any other piece of hardware that has noise filter . the idea is this since sound is built of waves the initial wave that we start off with being the sine wave of the AC plays a great role on the clarity of our final sound . And with normal speakers this is not really audible but with high end equipment the interference from other stuff around such as light dimmers and electrical appliances can very well be heard . that's where the noise filter comes in ..

Display prefs showing extra display when none are connected

I have a MacBook Pro and when I go to the display preferences it shows another display when no monitor is connected. I have searched the web extensively for a fix and haven't found anyone with the same problem. I'd prefer to just delete some obscure system file within OS X rather than reinstalling the whole OS just to fix the problem.
Anyone know of an easy way to get rid of the mysterious extra display?

I've just been reading this in the hope that my problem will be solved but realised that my problem is similar almost in reverse!
I have a Pioneer tv which I connected to my MBP several months ago using the MPB>mini DVI>DVI>HDMI cable route ... and all worked fine.
Today, when I connect the same items no luck. The only thing that happens is a brief flash of solid blue screen on MBP. I've tried all the resolution change tricks etc and no luck ... but here is the weird bit:
Even though I cannot get it to work, my MBP always shows "Gather Displays" as an option ... even when no display/cable connected ... if you click the ? button it suggests this button should only be available when more than one display is connected. Clicking it (or Detect Displays) does nothing.
So, my MBP seems convinced I have another display connected but won't let me see or use it. I don't even have the Arrangement tabs etc.
Any ideas?

Apple 24 display as an extra display

I have an Imac - late 2006 - and want an extra display connected - Does any user of this forum know if I can use Apple's late 24 display. I think of the graphic card or the power of this display can work together with my Imac.

You can't at this time, as your computer doesn't have a Mini DisplayPort and can't be upgraded to include one.

When I try to execute Extras --> Display generated program for a Transformation in RSA1 (BW 7.0) I get the following message:

Does any one know what's the reason for that?

Macbook Pro - Two extra displays? Help!

I currently have a 17" 4:3 Dell monitor connected to my MBP at my desk.
I would also like to connect a 32" 16:9 TV as well, without having to change connections every time I switch.
I thought about getting a DVI splitter, but I feel like there would be problems. I don't mind that the two extra displays show the same thing, but I assume the MBP would only read the output as one extra monitor, therefore would only have one resolution setting for both the extra monitor AND tv. Being two completely different sizes and aspect ratios, I feel like that would cause ugliness.
Is there a better way around this, or am I going to be stuck with this idea?

My PowerBook G4 17-inch display screen cracked. does anyone know where i can purchase just the screen?

You can buy them on eBay brand new and/or used.
No other companies I know of sell just the screen. They sell the screen but also it's part of their service package such as a screen replacement service.
Apple of course, does not sell parts to customers, such as an LCD screen.
There is however, one company I know of that says they sell Apple-compatible screens since Apple does not make their own screens, but gets them from OEM suppliers, to which they in turn get theirs.

A 17-inch Powerbook with a 1440 x 900 display does not have a DL SuperDrive. The model with a DL SuperDrive (introduced in October 2005) has a 1680 x 1050 display.
Yes, it sounds as though your Powerbook's inverter has failed. The inverter is inside the display assembly and difficult to replace. The display assembly is very expensive to replace in its entirety, so you'll have to choose between two pretty unappealing options.

A pc and powerbook sharing one 20' display

ok, this should be a piece of cake for somebody out there.
I have a pc laptop and a powerbook. i would like them to share my 20' cinema display.
how do i do it?
I think i need a dvi switch? if so, are there any particular brands i should be looking for?

so, i am going to respond to my own question here as far as what i have done.
so, can i share a pc and a powerbook on one 20in aluminum lcd display?
yes.
there are issues though.
most switches are for older crt displays not dvi so it cuts out 95% of the switches out there. (other problems may arise if the pc is older and cannot support dvi or it does do dvi but at a low resolution - ugh!)
naturally, the remaining switches are not inexpensive compared to their crt brethren ($250 + and NOT including cables that is another $100).
another issue is that switches have a port where you plug in a extra keyboard and a mouse. an extra keyboard and mouse MUST be used. you cannot use just a switch and continue to use the keyboard / mouse combo of the powerbook and pc.
expenses now for the switch, cables, keyboard and mouse.
regarding the extra keyboard and mouse. when you get them you know have a new set of problems because of the layout differences between a pc keyboard and a apple keyboard and the switch defaults to the pc settings. it can be worked around but it is a hastle. ugh!
my solution...
I bought a 1gb stick of ram for my powerbook bringing it up to 1.5 (which it needed anyway) and virtual pc. the total was for less than the switch itself and I got a more powerful mac out of it!
so, conclusion. if you want to do what i was thinking about... Don't. Get VPC and some extra ram instead.
yes, not everybody will be able to do the VPC route but it sure was a lot better than the alternative.

When the Powerbook is woken from sleep mode the airport crashes when using an external display. I have no idea why this is, but it seems from other threads, that the external display and airport are closely tied together, and I have also read that there are others who are experiencing some problems with the Airport. When this happens, I have to hard boot the machine as I can't forcequit or shut down the system from the menubar (this crashes too)

I don't think the DVD is damaged since it worked fine on my old G4 desktop.
The reason I'm trying to reinstall OS 10.4 is because I have received the computer from a family member with all his files and data in it. I want to get rid of it all and start from scratch for my personal use - if possible. If not, I could settle for less.
I want to explain few issues if that helps. I first tried installing Mac OS 10.3 to my Powerbook running Mac OS 10.4.3. I put OS 10.3 CD, started computer with C key held down, and all that came up was gray screen with 1 inch black line to the left of the Apple logo, and remained there - never making it to the blue screen. I shut of the computer, took the Mac OS 10.3 out of the Powerbook, restarted without the CD, and the computer was back to the desktop.
Then I tried installing 10.4, which goes past the gray screen, and gets stuck in the blue screen. I ejected the 10.4 DVD, and computer was back to normal (to the desktop)
It sounds like you inserted the wrong or a damaged DVD and neither the installation nor erasure took place. In that case, let's get started again on the right foot.
Tell me why you want to erase your hard drive? Were you experiencing some technical issue, and if so what? Let's troubleshoot that situation with the least harmful method.

Display Problem - Video noise with 15" Powerbook and 23" Studio Display

I just bought a used 23" Studio Display to act as a second monitor for my 1.0 GHz 15" Powerbook. In my set up, the display is rather noisy -- there are consistant flickering lines of white pixels throughout the display. The lines are worst in dark areas, though they may just be showing up under contrast. The Powerbook it is connected to still looks normal.
The first strange thing is that the display works perfectly with another 1.25 GHz 15" Powerbook I have to test it on. In both cases, I have connected the monitor to the Powerbooks with a new Apple brand powered DVI to ADV Adapter.
The second strange thing is that the display seemed to act fine until I reinstalled my Wacom tablet driver so that it would work with dual displays. I've uninstalled the driver, but it the problem is still there.
The third strange thing is that the display is fine while booting up. The blue boot up screen is very crisp looking and noiseless. It only starts showing noise when the login screen shows up.
Any thoughts about what may be causing the problem or how to fix it would be appreciated.

Powerbook 15" G5 dual 2.0 Mac OS X (10.4.7) 23" studio display

Well I called AppleCare yesterday and, believe it or not, we actually got the USB ports acting normally - well at least I can boot up with the keyboard plugged into the back of the monitor.
They had me reset the Open Firmware and that seemed to do the trick. Of course, the night before I updated to 10.4.10 so that may have had something to do with it, too. No idea.
As for the power sensor button thing, they wanted me to plug the monitor into a different system, either at a Genius Bar or a friend or whatnot to see if it would behave in the same manner - not wanting to activate. I took it to school with me and hooked it up to one of my teacher's G5 and it behaved the same way. It took like 15 times touching the sensor to bring the system up.
So I'll be calling them back and see where they want to go with this. Maybe I'll get lucky and get a new shiny monitor - or not...

Powerbook 17" and 20" display

I am thinking about buying the 20" display for an extended desktop for my powerbook 17", just wondered if there are any issues with this? i was using a sony sdm-hs95p and this is currently for sale on ebay but i figured i wanted a wide screen, just wondered if there are any issues regarding my future set-up?

My powerbook (with an extra monitor) is haunted

Ok, here goes
About a week ago I bought a nice 19" LCD display to go with my powerbook. I had no issues with it until last night.
When I turn off my computer it shuts down happily enough, but then it starts right back up again. This doesn't happen when I unplug the monitor from the computer. The monitor doesn't even have to be turned on.
What's going on?

Ok, problem solved... sort of
I went out and bought a DVI cable to clear my mind. I didn't want something to be wrong with my computer and I didn't want something to be wrong with my new display. So I blamed it on the adaptor/VGA cable combination. The new DVI cable works just fine (it ought to after what I spent on it) and now my computer will stay off.
Granted there may still be something wrong with the computer, but now that I'm going digital to the display it doesn't seem to affect anything.
So, the problem, while not completely understood, is now resolved. I'll probably be frowned upon for treating the symptom without understanding the root cause, but it stumped the applecare guy as well so I don't feel too bad about it.
Well Ned, thanks for sticking with me on this. I guess we can chalk it up to poltergeists after all.

17" Powerbook G4 1.5MHZ Display problem

I have had this PBG4 for almost 4 years now and in the last couple of weeks, the display will start splitting into two horizontal displays. I use an external monitor at my office and have never had problems until late. The first time this happened, I just turned the machine off for an hour or so and it worked fine. This go round, I left it off for a few hours and it is still there.
Any suggestions?

I have the same problem since a few days It's random. I thought I solved the problem with a massive Onyx system cleaning but it came back. I'm afraid it's a hardware problem due to a fall on the pavement last month. But, the strange thing is that if it boots correctly, the display stays fine, even after a sleep/wakeup. It only happens after a cold start. Before opening the powerbook, I'm going to try a clean Mac Os X install.
