  • Could NOT move my 12-inch Powerbook G4 battery. what can I do?

After I realised that my 12-inch Powerbook G4 battery is too hot. One of my friends told me that there is a "PowerBook G4 Battery Exchange Program", but I could not remove the battery from my PowerBook. I took my PowerBook to the computer department within my college, but all the Computer guys (including a ACTC) could NOT remove the battery.
As you all know it is a very simple step for removing the battery, but I could not.
I can not view the model and serial numbers labeled on the bottom of my battery, because nobody can remove the battery from the computer.
I called the shop where I bought the PowerBook, they said the only way they can do it is: take the battery by force (the case would be broken), then use a new case, but I have to pay several hundred Australia dollars.
    What can I do?
I am in Melbourne, Australia. I bought the Powerbook at November 2004.
    Regards

This sounds like a defect and not something that would be caused by a user. I would call AppleCare and ask them what to do under these circumstances. If it is out of warranty and they refuse to do anything, ask to be transfered to Customer Relations. Be polite but firm and explain that this is just a weird occurance and not related to something you did. How could it be? Hopefully they can find a way to unstick it, either by talking to them or by sending it in. In addition if your battery is heating up, they may replace it due to that fact alone. Try to find a way to measure the heat it put outs before calling in. Hopefully this will work for you!

  • PowerBook 12" Battery - best practice...?

    Hi guys,
I am about to order a new PowerBook 12" battery from Apple, and would like some best practice pointers to keep this one running well for as long as possible. My current one lasted nearly 4 and a half years...and now depletes within a few minutes.
So...should I initially charge it for a certain time? Not use it for the first charge? How about subsequent charges? OK to use plugged into an outlet while the battery has full charge?
Any and all pointers would be greatly appreciated.

Hi, Zak. Read the links I posted here. They will tell you everything you need to know and more.

  • Problem with PowerBook G4 Battery Updater

I hope somebody can help me. My Batterie do have 66% of its native capacity. I like to run the new Updater to optimize the capacity.
But I get an error if I start the Updater:
Your Power Supply must be connected
The updater don't start. But I have also connected the power supply.
    Please help.
    Thanks macneo
    PowerBook 15"   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

This is the information to the Updater:
The installer puts the "PowerBook G4 Battery Updater.app" application into your Applications/Utilities folder. When I run the application, I get the following instructions:
The PowerBook G4 Battery Updater improves the performance of batteries that may develop short run times. The update process will take about 15 minutes and must not be interrupted.
To upgrade the firmware on your battery, read through the instructions below. When you're ready, click Update.
The PowerBook G4 Battery Updater is installed in Applications/Utilities.
During the update process your PowerBook G4 needs to be running, the power adapter must be plugged into a working power source and the battery should not be removed. Your battery will appear to have no charge and will not power your computer until the update process has been completed.
If the update is interrupted retry the update process again until successful. If you have more than one battery to update be sure to complete the update process before starting to update another battery.
    1. Click Update to start the update process. The status bar shows the progress of the update.
    2. Wait until the update is complete. When complete a dialog will show that your battery was successfully updated.
    3. Remove your battery, then put your battery back into your PowerBook G4 for it to be recognized.
    4. Repeat the calibration process for your battery, to get the longest running time possible.

  • PowerBook G4 Battery Updater comes up every time I start my PowerBook.

I recently ran the utility application PowerBook G4 Battery Updater (after getting the impression that my battery doesn't last as long as it should anymore). The program told me that an update is not necessary. I quit the application. Since then, every time I boot the computer, the app opens automatically. Any ideas how to stop this? I don't know where the corresponding command or script or whatever it is may be stored.

  • Powerbook AC/battery issue

    Hi there
wondered if anyone could give advice to this issue. I recently acquired a used Powerbook G4 Aluminum 15" widescreen which I bought knowing it had a dead battery which I'm due to replace, however as I have to leave it plugged in with the ac adapter in the interim I have noticed that there is a low level crackling/squealing emitting from the speakers even during sleep mode - its only noticeable when its quiet and stops when I unplug from the wall but I wondered if this was something to be concerned about? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
    regards
    Troy

I have the 1 Ghz version. and the battery says that the battery is at 75%. very odd.
OK, that's the same as mine. The total capacity number is bizarre, though. The 75 percent on the battery sounds right, as that corresponds to what your reported mAh remaining would be compared to what my System Profiler says about maximum capacity.
Why it's stopping the charge at the point it is is a mystery, but it may simply be a calibration problem. I would recommend again the tactic of running the thing all the way down to sleep or warning, then letting it completely recharge. Apple says at page 9 of this manual (http://manuals.info.apple.com/enUS/PowerBookG415inch1GHz-867MHzGettingStarted.PDF) that this only need to be done once, but I have found that is not exactly true.
Anyway, it's worth a try. As a final thing to try, a power manager reset might be in order, though I have found that really is a last resort thing on the TiBook.

  • 12in Powerbook G4 Battery Replacement

Okay I know Apple has the powerbook G4 replacement in effect for certain battery's that have no life span. However my Powerbook serial qualifies for this replacement but my battery serial doesn't. Now my battery is doing everything that the replaceable batteries are doing. What should I do since I have no life on my battery is there a request that you can send to apple? How do they determine which ones to replace?

Batteries tend to last between a year and two years, depending on how hard you use them. I used mine pretty heavily (College will do that to a computer), and it lasted about a year before it started to not go into standby, and die after little more than an hour. I was luckily part of the recall, so I got a new one for free at the right time
Two BIG factors in battery life is how much is running on your system, and how bright your display is set to. If you haven't done it for a while, I'd recommend cleaning your system out, especially of login items. A few percent above what you need can make a remarkably big impact on how long your computer will run, and running the display at max vs min can cut off over an hour on a new battery.

  • Powerbook G4 Battery & Apple Care

    Hi,
I brought my Powerbook G4 into the Apple store b/c my battery would only hold about 1 hour after a full overnight charge. I bought the laptop in Sep 2004 and the Mac Genius told me that I needed to buy a new battery. I informed him that I bought Apple Care at the time of original purchase date (same store that I took the laptop into). His reason was that Apple Care only covers defective batteries and that after about two years, the battery will not hold a charge well. I told him I felt somewhat cheated b/c the battery issue was the primary issue as to why I bought Apple Care in the first place -- at the recommendation of the Apple salesman who said Apple Care covers the battery. I don't know what to do. I guess I could buy a new battery, but I just kind of feel a let down. What do you guys think? Have you ever had your laptop batteries replaced at no charge after a lengthy time of ownership?

My understanding is that batteries are considered to be "consumables" and are not covered under warranty (original or extended). From day one, they are known to wear out, that's their design. AppleCare costs something like $349 from Apple for a PB and a battery costs $79, so if that was the only reason to get it, it would hardly make fiscal sense.
I got my Applecare to protect myself in the event that the screen or logicboard or some other pricey component proved defective 18 or 24 months into owning my PB, and I could get the unit fixed and sent back to me gratis -- whereas an uncovered repair might total in the thousands otherwise.
If I were you, I would just buy a new battery -- I'm going to have to join you in few months, as my own battery has lost about half its capacity, but that's how rechargeable lithium ion batteries are -- their capacity and charge retention declines with both time and use. C'est la vie.

  • Dead PowerBook G4 battery

    Hi there,
My second PowerBook G4 17-inch battery is now officially dead -- at least that's how I feel. Less than about an hour ago, the screen went black and the whole battery thing shut itself down. There was no way I could restart the system. I tried -- three finger salute, long-press on the power button; nothing happened. I pretty much rushed back home and pushed the button again: I heard a tick-ish kind of noise, but the thing won't start. I plugged it into power: it started up well. Then I unplugged it and it went off the moment it was unplugged. So I gather it's a dead battery, all in all.
I got this at Macworld in January 2006, serial number LWxxxxxxxxxxx [note: serial number removed by moderators], for a 17-inch PowerBook G4. The one that shipped with my machine in China works great. This thing is like dead shy of 6 months after I bought it.
Is anyone else getting this problem with batteries near my range (serial number-wise)?
    Best,
    David.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Since your machine is under a year old, I'd call AppleCare at:
    800 810 2323 (the within China number)
and see if they will replace your battery.

How many cycles? DON'T KNOW - I'M A NOVICE USER! One failure mode for lithium batteries is that the data about the battery is bogus, ie, it shows 21,000mAh capacity (versus normal around 3500mAh).

  • PowerBook G4 battery updater (?)

Hey guys, I just got a 15" powerbook G4/ SuperDrive as a replace for my non-working powerbook G4 Combo. Apple says that the battery on this computer should last longer that the one in the previous model. However.. it doesn't seem to be quite like that.
Does anyone know what this application actually does to the battery? Or if it's recommended to use it on a new battery? Or only for old batteries when their life period is shortened?

It updates the firmware on the battery itself (you didn't realise batteries had firmware too? Apparently these days they do...) to fix a bug that has been found in the new batteries that shipped with the latest PowerBooks.
The updater program will determine if it can be applied to your new battery.

  • Powerbook G4 Battery Updater Crashes

I just installed Leopard on my powerbook G4 and tried to update my battery (301 cycles, 27% heath according to istat). Every time I hit 'update' the program crashes. Thoughts?

have you done all the other software updates first?
is the battery update the newest one?

  • Since I let my G4 Powerbook's battery run down, I hear a loud CLICK SOUND at regular intervals, that I never heard before. It sounds like a back-up click. Is this a problem?

After letting my PowerBook G4's battery run down all the way, I hear a loud metalic CLICK sound every so often.  Not sure if this is a problem or not. Should I be worried, or have it checked out?

If it's not the original PowerBook, and you have the original OS X disks that came with your PowerBook, run  the Apple Hardware Test.  If it's the first PowerBook, the Apple Hardware Test is available online.
When prompted, run the extended test. Depending on how much memory you have in the system, the test can take an hour or more.
TechTool Deluxe or Pro can do similar testing, too.
You're looking to see if it gives you any error messages about the hardware in your system.

  • Ti Powerbook Internal Battery Question

    Folks,
I have a Ti Powerbook (400Mhz) and it has been stored for some time. When I tried to turn it on it would not start up. I have tried to recharge the internal battery, recharge the primary battery (which did not charge at ALL), reset the PMU and zap the PRAM. None of these things have worked and the computer still won't start. i am assuming from these things that the internal battery is dead. Can someone please tell me: 1.) where exactly the internal battery is located (I believe it is under the optical drive) ? 2.) How hard of an install a new battery would be (I'm pretty handy with a screwdriver) ? 3.) Can I buy a replacement battery at Radio Shack or the like? I would very much like to get this computer up and running for my fiance who is considering a switch from a......GULP.....Dell laptop. Thanks in advance for the help.
Powerbook   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   None

Hi, epotkano, and welcome to Apple Discussions. When you tried to recharge the internal backup battery, did you do so without the main battery in place? If not, do. The backup battery is often resilient enough to come back to life and take a charge even when both batteries have been drained so long that the main battery defies resurrection, but it may only happen if the dead main battery is removed. If after 24 hours of attempted charging with the main battery removed, the Tibook still won't start, disconnect the backup battery's wire leads and try again. If the PB then starts up, the backup battery should be replaced. If it doesn't, the backup battery is not the problem — or not the only problem.
The backup battery module resides directly under the right wrist rest, above the slot-loading optical drive. You must remove the keyboard, the lower case (bottom panel) and the DVD drive to get to it. It isn't hard. The module (here's a picture) is a unit, though it contains several flat, disklike cells; if it has to be replaced, you replace the whole thing including its wire leads, not just the cells. It's only sold by specialty Mac parts dealers, and I notice that it's currently out of stock at iFixit. One or more of the following other vendors may be able to help you sooner, if you need to order one:

  • Powerbook external battery pack?

I recently bought a powerbook(15" ) to use for graduate school. My classes are going to last anywhere from 2 hours to up to 4 and a half hours. Obviously battery life is important. I am hoping to be able to sit next to an outlet but in case I cannot I am looking into other battery solutions. So my question is, is there any kind of external battery pack that can be plugged into the powerbook (usb, firewire..) while it is in use that could extend the operating time while I am in class? Also if i bought an extra battery, is the switching of the battery a time consuming/difficult task or is it easy to do on the fly?
    Thanks for all your help!

I haven't seen those big battery plates for recent notebook Macs (haven't looked too hard either), but they might exist. I suspect they could be problematic if you plugged an external in and it tries to charge the internal battery.
Changing the normal battery is pretty easy - you do have to put the computer to sleep, then you need a coin to unlock/eject the battery on the bottom. You can probably do all this in about 20 seconds with practice. Newer Technology advertises aftermarket batteries that promise a little more capacity than the originals. Also, you can adjust several settings to conserve power on battery - put the energy saver for reduced processor performance; dim the screen, turn off Airport wifi, quit any applications you aren't using that might be using a little CPU power; have sufficient RAM to reduce virtual RAM pageouts.
