  • Open/Close Powerbook's case

I need to have a look at my USB ports in case something's burned. How easy (difficult) is it to get the case open?
And to get it shut again?
Goes without saying, I need it to work after I'm done...
    Thanks, guys.

17" is not to difficult to open up, it is unlikeley that any damage to USB ports will be visible:
    http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Mac/PowerBook-G4-Al-17-Inch/55
it gets a bit tricky around display release button in the lower case - if the clips are bent too much in that area button may not work properly
try at your own risk though

  • Purchasing powerbook outer case?

I have some cracks and dings on the bottom part of my power book. I have no intention of buying a new computer, but would rather renovate it. Anyone know where I can find one online?
    Thanks in advance.
Also a cheap place to buy memory and a hard drive upgrade would work to
Finally, has anyone ever gotten a PC card to work which enables bluetooth without having to use the stupid external dongle?
    Thanks once again/

  • New PowerBook Ti User Wants Input on BEST Carrying Case

Just got a beautiful 15-inch Titanium, hardly used!
I'm so excited, but have become quickly confused about choosing a PowerBook Case and additional accessories.
This is my first notebook, so every case, stand, pad, skin, protector I read about sounds ideal, but I can't get them all.....
Anyone who has a moment to offer their "Best of the Best" two cents on any of the following:
    PowerBook Carrying Case;
    PowerBook Stand;
    Keyboard/Screen Protector;
    Skin
    ANYTHING ELSE I HAVEN'T THOUGHT OF;
Please respond freely. All info is welcome and appreciated! PS- Ideally, I'd like a Carrying Case that can transform into a stable work surface, possibly with a cooling device if necessary.
    Thanks!!!

    LA Lauer,
I use a Tenba case for my Ti and am quite satisfied with it. I also use a leather screen saver from Other world computing, but I have heard from many others that a piece of notebook paper works just as well. I considered buying a TiHandle (not sure if these are still on the market) but never got around to it.
As far as accessories are concerned, an iPod is the ultimate, an Airport express comes in handy, and a mighty mouse helps with long hours of work.
    Hope this helps

  • USB 2 Driver for 15" powerbook G4   Driver simply available or drive requir

Hey guys, for this said computer, which has a usb1 drive...is it possiblt to upgrade it to a usb2 drive simply by adding software, as with a PC? or do you have to get a usb2 drive hardwear for it to work too? Cheers, Jonothan

...but my friend assured me that i would just be able to download some software as, he says, you do with a PC.
You have to download driver software for any USB2 adapter if you're using it in a PC. The Mac USB2 drivers are built into OS X (10.2.8 or 10.3.4 and up). So it's a bit simpler to get one up and running on a Mac.
USB2 requires a hardware controller that's part of the card. That's why it isn't possible to upgrade any computer from USB 1 to USB2 with software alone.
The reason USB2 adapter cards are "ugly" is that a USB female port doesn't fit into the thickness of a PC Card — so the port or ports must extend outside the Powerbook's case.

  • Powerbook Titanium/G4 need compatible USB PCMCIA USB 2.0 card

I have a G4/Titanium Powerbook and acquired a new iPod Nano (4th G). It requires a USB 2.0 port to synch/recharge, but my Laptop only has USB 1.1. I thought that a PCMCIA card would remedy the situation, but when I purchased one from SIIG, I was told by their Tech SUpport that the card did not support iPods. Synching on the USB 1.1 is murderously slow and I want to keep my war horse functional as long as I can. Does anyone know of a PCMCIA Card USB 2.0 adaptor that will work with iPod Nano 4th G? Thanks.

  • IBook G4 top cases

    HI there
quite an experience Mac repairer but have been stumped with this one - in the iBook G4 14" range the 933Mhz to 1.2 GHz models have the 4 pin black block track pad connectors then the 1.33GHz up have the small white connector - my question is if I swap the the actual latch and block track pad connector from a 933MHz and put it on the 1.33 top case removing the latch and white connector will it work when I connect it to a 933 machine?
    any help is greatly appreciated
    Troy

Sounds like a good Idea to me. I would think it would work. I never tried it myself, but i've done close to the same, I swap the board and cable on a 15" powerbook top case (i forgot the speed) to a 15" pb top case 2 dou and it worked.

  • Suddenly G4 no longer connects to internet

My wireless internet has worked effortlessly for years, but suddenly my G4 decides it can't find it. A few days ago, it started asking for the password which was odd, but now no response. The signal is completely full and all other laptops and computers in the house have NO problem. I have turned Airport on and off, restarted, repaired permissions with Disk Utility, zapped PRAM, rescanned for devices and nothing. I always do all updates, so the G4 is fully updated and runs 10.5.7 What has happened? thanks-

Can you give more details of your G4 (processor speed; OS; RAM, etc)? I don't see a G4 desktop machine listed in your equipment list so some extra info is a good starting place. If it's a PowerBook G4 that's involved, they have separate forum areas, broken down by model. Find your specific version and follow one of these links:

  • Rebooting when turning off and percentage problems

i have downloaded 3.1.3 and since then when i turn my iphone on in the morning my percentage will show the wrong amount, then when i unlock it a second later it will jump to the right percentage, an example is this morning i knew it was at about 45% but i turned on the iphone and it said 19% and a warning flashed up that i was at 20% then when i unlocked it it jumped back to 45%, it is so annoying..also it reboots when i turn it off at night which ruins my usage and standby times..and yes i have tried everything even restoring to a new iphone..anyone else having this? im going to send feedback i urge everyone else too.

    Hi John, and welcome!

  • Inverter board or worse?

I'm trying to resurrect a Ti 867 that I dropped a couple of weeks ago. Doh!
The CPU works fine - powers on and off - but the screen is dead. Shining a bright light either at the screen or through the logo produces nothing on the screen.
I tried connecting a VGA monitor via 2 different Apple DVI to VGA adapters but I don't get anything on the VGA - not even a flicker.
I have nothing to lose by taking a crack at fixing the poor thing but I'm not sure what I'll need. I can get parts - used screens and boards - what will I need to get this done?
    Thanks,
    Jeff

Hi, izzydog, and welcome to Apple Discussions. If it were only a bad inverter, you'd see an image on the display under a bright light, and an external display would be unaffected and would work normally. So you've got a more serious problem, and what the built-in and external monitors have in common, unfortunately, is the logic board. If you have access to a known-good used one at a reasonable price, replace yours and see what happens. I assume from your tone that you're willing to burrow into the machine yourself instead of paying a tech to do it, which certainly wouldn't be worthwhile. Directions are here.
Where on the Powerbook's case, if anywhere, are the visible signs of impact or other damage?

  • I am and have been having major problems with my G4

I am hoping someone can help me solve these problems.
Issues I am having with my machine:
    1. No sound in the speakers.
    2. Red light in audio jack.
    3. Very slow performance.
    4. Extremely long start-up time for both system and applications.
    5. Fuzzy monitor.
    6. Monitor clear on the left side, fuzzy on the right.
    7. When applications are running, very slow response time when changing from one tool to the other.
    8. Most Adobe products do not respond upon start-up or shut-down.
    9. Machine locks up, stopping clock, force quit, or any other function I am trying to perform.
    10. The machine never behaves the same way twice in regard to start-up shut-down, etc.
The performance and functionality of my machine has become progressively worse. Can anyone offer any suggestions or tips? I see there are many discussions on related topics. My machine has multiple problems and I would like to remedy as many as I possibly can.
    Thank you.

  • Safari fix that worked for us after persistent crashes

In trying to back up all files on our G4 Powerbook in case our hard drive was crashing (we had tried fixing permissions, reinstalling Safari after using Pacifist to take it out of one of the software updates, resetting Safari, boosting Safari's database storage cache, and then were having Google Sketchup starting to crash as well) we got this message during the backup - 'Unable to read the file cookies.plist'. Since I'd tried resetting Safari I hadn't thought this file might be the corrupted one. I went to Library/Cookies and threw the file away and now everything's fine - Safari and Sketchup are both working. Good luck!

If doing so improved the situation, this confirms that one of Safari's database files has become corrupt and is causing the crashing, and this shows up in your crash log as Thread 3 having crashed.
The blacklists from Google’s Safe Browsing Initiative (where Safari checks for 'fraudulent websites') are contained in a database cache file called SafeBrowsing.db - the file was created when you first launched Safari 3.2, and if you have the browser open, the file is modified approximately every 30 minutes.
As an alternative to turning off 'Warn when visiting a fraudulent website', which will lose you that important security feature, you should delete that database file, (but first close Safari):
    Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari (this is a folder)/SafeBrowsing.db
It will be recreated next time you open Safari, and will then start again collecting details of dodgy websites.

I had been having a number of kernel panics that did not result in a panic log. I did an archive re-install and this seemed to sort the matter. • Battery or Something Else? Laptop only works when plugged in.

Suddenly, my G4 Powerbook w/ Tiger only works on power cord, not battery. As soon as I unplug it, it shuts down and does not hold its time settings. How do I determine if its new battery time or something else? Thank you.

Here's the same info from my battery which is supposed to be five years old:
    Battery Information:
    Battery Installed: Yes
    First low level warning: No
    Full Charge Capacity (mAh): 4741
    Remaining Capacity (mAh): 4626
    Amperage (mA): 0
    Voltage (mV): 12392
    Cycle Count: 105
I just noticed that you have a 15" model and the power numbers may not be the same as my 17" model.
It would be prudent to post this data in the forum section for the 15" PowerBooks in case there is some basic difference. Be aware that there is a recall program for certain 15" PowerBook batteries. Details are here:

  • 17in MacBook Pro exceeds new UK carry-on baggage restrictions

I'm about to buy a new MacBook Pro and intended to go for the 17in model. However, I see that the dimensions of my favourite case (Brenthaven for the 17in computer) are greater than the new hand baggage resitrctions imposed on travellers from UK airports. My present 15in PowerBook Brenthaven case at 41.3x31.8x12.7 is well within the limits. However, the 17in case is 46.4cm long, compared with the 45cm maximum allowed. Since airport staff are being ultra officious, I can foresee difficulties in getting the 17in on board. No one wants to have to check their laptop into the hold. Does anyone have any direct recent experience? If these carry-on restrictions become universal it poses a threat to the viability of 17in notebook computers, I suppose.

The 17-inch MacBook Pro is not too big. It meets
the requirements with room to spare.
The problem is that the Brenthaven bag is too large.
So why not check your accessories with the rest of
your luggage and use a smaller bag to carry on just
    the 17-inch MBP:

    http://www.booqbags.com/Detail.bok?no=436
WOW, The 436 bag is beautiful, and likely just right for all I'd want with me! I did not come across that, when I decided on the 15". However, I saw the REI bag in person and liked it, as bag I was using for PWB was falling apart. At time of MBP purchase I did not want two bags. If I had not seen the REI bag, I'd buy the 436!!!!!
