PowerBook G4 compatible webcams

I have recently bought a Logitech QuickCam Connect (E2500) for my PC and thought I could use it for my Mac. Does anyone know if I can use it and if so what application I should open it with? Is there a better webcam instead? Thanks!

First, here is an extensive list of tested compatible webcams that work out of the box, and some with some "tinkering" needed before it's useful. (Save for buying that product on the page, which I didn't-- just found their list of compatible webcams useful).

To save you the trouble, I found two that worked fine out of the box with my former 15-inch PowerBook (1.67GHz DLSD model). Tiger and Leopard work best with it. Leopard does it without a hitch.

  • Is my Powerbook Windows compatible (webcam question)?

    Hi all,
I recently bought the above webcam believing it to be mac compatible. However it appears not to be the case unless perhaps i can install Windows on my Powerbook..?
is this true or can anybody offer advice on this subject or know of any external drivers i can download to make it work..?
    Help..!
    Thx in advance - S.

I recently bought the above webcam believing it to be
mac compatible. However it appears not to be the case
Upgrade to 10.4.9 and see if that makes a difference.
10.4.9 provides limited support for some USB webcams.

  • Compatible webcam for a G4

Does anyone have a Mac compatible webcam they would recommend? I have a G4 running Tiger 10.4.11. I bought a Logitech quickcam communicate deluxe at a good price, but before opening it, I wondered if anyone knows if it would be compatible? I went to 2 logitech sites and one convinced me "no" and then the other one made me think it might. I don't have an xbox so that camera wouldn't be practical.
    Thanks, Karen

As I said in the email any UVC Compliant camera will work if you have OS 10.4.9 or above and USB 2.0 ports
Older (non UVC compliant) cameras will need a Mac Drive and Possibly the iSUBCam utility
I can not see this Deluxe variant you talk about in their Camera Guide so it may be so new it has not made it or just not listed. (the List is not exhaustive).
The Spec Sheet does say it is USB 2 and mentions the Logitech RightLight™2 Technology whicg is normally a good sign along with Vista compatibility that it is in fact UVC compliant.
I have not heard anything Specific about this camera.

  • Mac Compatible Webcams

Can anyone suggest a Mac compatible webcam or two for me...smiles

    Hi jimmyblues-
I'm hip but I just couldn't find anything Mac. Thanks for posting that.
Have you any feedback about any of those units? They certainly look like they should do the trick, but it would be interesting to know how they actually integrate and work with a Mac and associated programs.

  • Photo Booth compatible webcams?

Does anyone know of any webcams that are compatible with Photo Booth and iChat? Since I have a Mac Mini, I need something 3rd party that would work since Apple no longer sells the iSight stand-alone. Any advice?

    Hello supermanguy87
    Some info at http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=5725045&#5725045
Compatilbe Firewire webcams or camcorders mentioned in this link will work regardless of your OS provided you avoid possible conflicts.
If you are using 10.4.9 or later, you can use UVC cams without additional drivers.
If you use earlier Mac OS X versions, you can use compatible USB cams by adding the iChatUSBCam software mentioned in the above link. (Many of the "pre-UVC" USB cams also need additional driver software, even if you are using 10.4.9 or later.) See the iChatUSBCam web site for FAQs, more info, and a list cameras that can provide a Knowing Working Configurations.

  • Reviews or feedback on WIRELESS or ETHERNET mac compatible webcams

Hi, to be clear not interested in USB webcams - I have a logitech 9000 - but am looking to put a web cam in another room (a security cam for the front of our home) running with securityspy (bensoft.com) so it isn't near the computer, hence needs to be either a) a wireless compatible model or one that can plug into an ethernet port with a networked address. I am aware of this great site that lists compatible cams
    http://www.mac-compatible-web-cam.com/
but there are no listings of wireless or networked cams. Any takers on this one? And respectfully I'm not looking for "I think it might work" or "have you googled" - I'm trying to find someone who's used these things, found a solution perhaps etc.

    802.11b/g/n ... does not matter.
You can have high interference from a lot of neighboring networks in a dense urban area. Keep in mind that the airwaves are a shared medium and 802.11 protocols use the access method CSMA/CA (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carriersense_multiple_access_with_collisionavoidance) This means that the Apple TV can at times get no access to the network even though signal strength is high.
If you can get a direct Ethernet connection to your router it will be much more reliable in an area where there are a lot of other 802.11 signals.
If you really want to run wirelessly (or must) ...
    1. The 2.4 GHz band has 11 channels. But 802.11 uses 5 of them at the same time and the channel number is just a center channel. So in reality, there are only 3 non-overlapping channels available: 1, 6 and 11.
    2. Do you have a microwave running? Microwaves run on channel 6 (2.450 GHz). Try either channel 1 or channel 11 for your access point (AP).
    3. Most people use their AP out of the box on channel 6. Again, channels 1 or 11 have lower interference.
    4. Does your AP have an external antenna jack? If so, maybe you can find an antenna with more gain. If the antenna is directional, it can be aimed at your Apple TV and thus reduce the interfere from other networks.
    5. At last resort, you can also get Ethernet to run through your house wiring using powerline networking products.

  • Is there a 1.3mp Mac-compatible webcam?

I realise that this is slightly off-topic, but it's the only place I can find to post my question!
I need to find a webcam that can take stills at 1.3mp resolution but is also (of course) Mac compatible. I would of course get an iSight, but the 640x480 resolution is too low for what I need.
So far I've drawn a blank - please can someone help?

I'd recommend looking for a camcorder with a firewire connection. Such as this one: http://www.sonystyle.com/is-bin/INTERSHOP.enfinity/eCS/Store/en/-/USD/SYDisplayProductInformation-Start?ProductSKU=DCRTRV280&Dept=cameras&CategoryName=d cc_DICamcordersDigital8HandycamCamcorders

  • ISight compatible webcams?

Does anyone have any experience using webcams other than iSight? I have been looking for some good comparison reviews but have been unable to find much useful. The problem is iSight is too expensive. I know there are lots of USB cams out there and there is a problem that lets you use USB cams with iChat AV. But does USB cut it in terms of speed? Do any of them also have built in mics?
    Thanks.

Yes, of course you get what you pay for. But I could pay thousands of dollars for a professional broadcast quality DV video camera too and I'd get what I pay for.
What I want as we all do is to pay as little as possible for the function that we need. What I need is 2 webcams that will work with an older iBook and a PowerBook G4. I know the iBook doesn't have USB 2.0 but I am not sure if the PowerBook G4 has USB 2.0. I believe, but I don't know, that USB 2.0 or firewire is necessary to have decent video speeds.
The iChatUSB software costs like $10. Most USB 2.0 web cams seem to cost about $50-$80. So let's say $90 x 2 = $180. Versus $130 x 2 (iSight with educational discount) + $10 x 2 + $30 x 2 (? seems you have to buy a separate mount kit for iSights to use on studio displays and laptops??) = $280 - $350. Quite a big difference there.
So I want what will work.

  • Advice for mac compatible webcam that is wideangled enough for conferencing

I am working with a company who is currently using a Logitech QuickCam Vision Pro for one of their conference rooms, the quality is okay but it is only able to capture half of the room. There is no way to reposition it to capture more of the room so I was wondering if anyone knew of a webcam that might be better suited for wider views. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

  • Suggestion for a truly Mac-compatible webcam?

I'm not sure which is the best group for this, so here goes. I need a wireless (wifi 802.11g) network camera, which I will access from a Mac. A number of cameras rated highly on-line don't actually work with Mac because they need an ActiveX control (only available on Windows with Internet Explorer) or need a PC for the initial setup. Can someone recommend a good network camera that doesn't need any PC involvement?
    Thanks!
    Mike

Ok, I can provide you with a better answer than linking to a Google search.
Look for a camera with similar features to the isight.
CCD sensor has a 640×480-pixel VGA resolution. Autoexposure, autofocusing from 50 mm to infinity, and video capture at 30 frames per second in 24-bit color with a variety of shutter speeds. Internal microphones with dual-element noise suppression.
    Like these cameras:

You can also use Logitech cameras using Macam drivers.

  • Can someone recommend a usable Linux-compatible webcam?

    Hi,
I'm looking for a cheapish webcam that has excellent support under Linux and a bearable display quality (for skype and the like). I have a logitech quickcam express (0x046d:0x0928) which is supposed to work with spca5xx but I tried and X is always hardlocking when I try to access the stream. Tried different setups, programs, everything. I don't think I'll get this to work.
Has anyone made good experience with a specific model?
    Thanks!

I bought a Logitech Quickcam 3500 last week and it works perfectly. No configuration or anything

  • Apple Stores and PowerBooks: not compatible

Recently, I've brought my G3 and G4 PowerBooks into the local Apple Stores to inquire about batteries and power supplies. However, as far the Apple Store's tech staffs are concerned, I might as well have brought in a couple of dinosaurs.
Neither store had replacement batteries for my G4, and neither one had a replacement power supply for my G3. Both tech staffs regarded my 15" G4 -- built in the apparently Dark Ages of the Year 2004 -- like it was an abacus. And they responded to my G3 Pismo -- built in the Paleolithic Era of 1999 -- with something like incredulity. Meanwhile, there was a line of MacBook Air owners impatiently waiting for me to hurry up and get my antiques out of the way.
Good grief! Any one else have similar experiences? Why don't Apple Stores have some older accessories on hand?

My surprise was that Apple apparently wants to forget about discontinued products as soon as they get discontinued.
I think you're overstating the case a bit. As I noted, Apple is still selling batteries and AC adapters for all of the Aluminum Powerbooks, the last of which was discontinued over two years ago. But Apple may not supply those batteries to every Apple store and Apple reseller, because they can more efficiently and inexpensively be directed to where they are wanted if they're kept in a central location. And as Niteshooter has correctly observed, a battery whose package has been unsealed and that has been used for testing purposes is no longer saleable as "new," so stores may well be reluctant to open and use them that way even if they are in stock. And stores may well be reluctant to keep them in stock, because they are no longer much in demand. The marketplace dictates in large part how convenient it will be for you to obtain parts with which to troubleshoot and diagnose a problem with an older Mac (or any other older device).
For some people in the situation you were in, a good option is to connect with a Mac user group, which may have members with like equipment who can swap parts temporarily to test them. But if there's no user group nearby, you have to do whatever you can, as you did. It's just a fact of life that solving problems with old stuff gets less convenient (and potentially more expensive) as the stuff ages.
I'm glad you resolved your battery problem successfully, and at no extra cost. You can be confident that a new battery would have cost more at the Apple Store, if it had had one to sell, than you paid on Ebay. Of course in that case you could have diagnosed the problem at the Apple Store and then bought a battery on Ebay — but I'm sure you can see why the store wouldn't have any interest in facilitating that outcome.

  • Compatible webcams for Flash

I am trying to get a Hercules dualpix webcam to run with the
    Open University's FlashMeeting.
System is XP, same problem with Firefox or IE as Browser.
Flash detects the webcam, but image is very poor quality and jumps
around, then system crashes - complete power out shutdown every few
    minutes.
This looks like a conflict between the webcam software and
    Flash software.
Has anyone had similar problems with this webcam, or found a
way of getting it to work?
I am a university tutor (technology) wanting to recommend
    webcams to my students.
What webcams work well, out of the box, with Flash 9?
    Thanks

    Hi
I saw your question and was wondering if 4 months later you had found out any useful information about the BDP-S780 connectivity to any TV.  Info about the webcam/video camera to connect to it would be equally useful.  Thanks.
