PowerBook G4 don't startup

My powerbook started to give problems a few days ago. Began to miss the start until now not even starts. When I power on it, hear the startup chime and only get the screen all black. Remain the key power down and hear him turn off. Someone can help me to resolve this. Thank you.

Welcome to the Apple discussions.
I just posted this for a similar situation ... have you run the Apple hardware test? Find the original OS X disc that shipped with your system, which says "AHT Version x.x" in small print on the label. Assuming you can get it into the CD/DVD drive, reboot holding the option key down, choose the Apple hardware test, click the arrow to the right and follow directions. Choose the extended test. Does that tell you anything?

Hello and welcome to the support community
You only option is to buy a copy of Mac OS X, either the retail disk or system disks.
There are places you can by a copy of Mac OS X, like online vendors, Amazon or eBay.
System disk are gray and come with more than one disk. Retail disk are black with a 'X' on them and often come as one DVD disk.
Not sure what version your going to require as you haven't provided any specification and model details.
I would safely assume being a G4, it would be happy to install Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger.
If you could let us know the PowerBook you own, then I am sure we could advise you further.
    Best of luck

I have a Powerbook G4 (don't laugh) with iPhoto '08. How does iCloud work with my computer. I have a iPhone 4 that has iCloud. Is iCloud pushing my phone's PhotoStream to my computer if it doesn't have the latest OS? Thanks so much for whoever can help!

iCloud will not work with your computer because iCloud requires Lion. Lion requires an Intel Core 2 Duo processor or better. For you to have iCloud and PhotoStream you would need to buy a newer Mac Intel model meeting the requirements for Lion:
    Lion System Requirements
Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7, or Xeon processor
    2GB of memory
    OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
    7GB of available space
Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.

  • Powerbook G4 15" - Hear startup chime but nothing else happens

I hear the startup "chime" but then nothing.
Screen black. No light in power button or hinge button.
I can shut down by holding the power button.
Disk in CD drive, tries to work. Cannot eject, even when holding trackpad button.
Took out battery and disconnected power for 5 mins.
Tried to zap pram, wouldn't let me.
Worked fine two days ago, new problem.
    What can I do?

  • PowerBook G3 PDQ Loses Startup Disk on Cold Boot

    I have a PowerBook G3 PDQ (266Mhz, 192MB RAM).
For the longest time it's had Mac OS X 10.1 on it, along with Mac OS 9.2.2.
I always noticed that it started up with Mac OS 9 after a cold boot, even if the startup disk was set for the OS X system folder.
So, I reformatted the disk and re-installed OS X 10.1 (being the only version of OS X i own that will run on the machine). Everything ran fine.
But after a cold boot, it lost the startup disk, and i get the flashing question mark on a floppy disk. I can hear the hard disk spin up, then down, then up, then down. Eventually the machine shuts off. I have to boot off a Mac OS 9 CD and select the OS X system folder to make it boot again.
Anyone know how to fix this?
    Thanks.

Like S.U. I replaced the PRAM battery on two Wallstreets (got batteries from OWC) and, although I'm very nervous about working with tiny parts, I found it to go well by following the iFixit instruction to the letter. The innards weren't nearly as fragile as I expected and I allowed plenty of time so I wouldn't feel compelled to rush.
The most serious issue I encountered was that the original battery's cable on one WS managed to get snagged under the metal battery bracket when the computer was originally assembled. This compounded the problem that the user--a cigarette smoker--had inadvertently melted the plastic between the trackpad and the front edge of the upper case. This made the case weak at that point and I had to be very careful in dislodging the stuck cable.
I had mentally made the job much more difficult than it turned out to be. Just have the right tools:
    1) You may find that, to remove the heat shied screw--requires a Philips #0 screwdriver--you may need to shorten the point of the driver to better fit the shallow cuts in the screw head. The screw is soft and can easily strip out if you indiscreetly use an unmodified #0 Philips.
    2) Have an old ice cube tray or egg carton handy to keep the screws sorted.

  • Oracle don't startup automatically on boot

Hi, I create a virtual machine on Sun Virtualbox (guest windows 2003 and my host is windows 7). This instalation is to study oracle database!
In guest Windows 2003, there are 2 network interfaces: a loopback (IP: 10.168.10.50) and a bridge (that to connect to internet - IP: 196.168.0.180 - dinamically DHCP). The hostname of guest is "oracle". I install the oracle 10.2.0.
After install oracle, when I restart windows, it startups automatically! But after time, I need start manually in sqlplus (startup) because error "ora-12514: TNS: Listener does not currently know of service requested in connect descriptor".

    Someone can help me?

    Hello,
You may try also this method.
You can create a *.bat* script which start first the Listener, then the database (and the OracleService<SID>) as follow:
    set ORACLE_SID=<SID>
    lsnrctl start
oradim -startup -sid <SID> -starttype srvc, instThen, with the Windows Task Scheduler you create a Task to launch this *.bat* script at the Server startup.
By that way you may control that the Listener start before the Database.
    Hope this help.
    Best regards,
    Jean-Valentin

  • Powerbook Pismo Hangs on Startup HELP!

I have a G3 pismo that hangs on startup, no matter what I've tried!
I have tried to reset the pmu. zap the pram, change out the hard drive with another one with OS 10.3.9, boot from an external hard drive with OS 10.3.9, and external cd drive with an OSX Panther install disk.
I get the "You need to restart your computer" message in the background, and what looks like a kernal panic message in the front.
    The kernal is version 7.0.0.
At the bottom of the page it says "We are hanging here..."
Has anybody been through this? Am I missing something?

  • [SOLVED] Panels don't startup with Gnome

When I login to gnome, no panels appear (it has worked in the past).
All I have are the few default desktop icons and the ability to right click on the desktop which leads me to believe that I unchecked "gnome-panel" from the autostart option earlier.
I would go back into the autostart option but I don't know how to access it now that I don't have a panel.  So does anyone know how I may access this or manually edit a file or something?
    I found this, but it wasn't very helpful: http://www.captain.at/howto-autostart-p … -gnome.php
    Any help very appreciated.
P.S. I thought of trying Alt+F2 (that's the command right?) and then entering gnome-panel, but the run dialog would not come up when I tried.
edit: Navigating to /usr/bin and then double clicking "gnome-panel" does nothing.

Dude...lol, It was installed and working 100 percent for sure until I unselected it from the autostart list and now I need get it back.  I just need to know how to put "gnome-panel" back into the autostart list.
    EDIT: SOLVED
Ah, I figured it out and it wasn't anything to do with what I thought.
Earlier I uninstalled Avahi with gtkpacman and I guess gnome-panel absolutely needs that.  So ok, problem solved.

  • Widgets don't startup on N97

    Hi all!
I'd like to use two widgets on my N97 (FW 11.xxx, newest available ), Facebook and Accuweather.  The problem is, both of them refuse to start on boot.
The phone boots normally, but those two widgets never show up. Reinstalling them doesn't solve the problem.
    Any ideas?
    6110-->8210-->6510-->6230-->6288-->N95-->N97-->E7

Take aout the battery and let it rest for let's say 2 min. Put it back again and start the phone pressing space-right shift - leftshift and backspace. Hold the buttons in until you get to choose language (hard reset as mentioned). If this don't work, you might try to connect the phone back to the computer and se if it starts to charge. If it does, try to start it by pushing the on button for a while. If that doesn't work, but the phone charges, try hard reset while booting the device.
If it's still dead after taking out the battery, hard reset, try to connect to pc you will need to take it to a Nokia carepoint i guess.

  • Powerbook G4 Hangs at Startup

My Powerbook hangs on the grey apple window during start up indefinately. I have tried single mode start up and when I tried to Repair the disc it ended on the message that said 'Incorrect block count for file mach (It should be 1 instead of 0). Nothing else responded after this so I had to shut it down. When I tried repairing the permissions it hung on the repair indefinitely. I then tried the Verbose mode andit eventually seems to loop one message continuosly. The message is 'IOTABlockStorageDriver : : sCompleteZeroBlockTransfer-WARNING,completing a zero block transfer. The hard drive is accessible though through target disk mode and when I 'Option Boot' I can see the drive with its original mode.
What does this mean and how can I solve this problem? The computer is running on OS X 4.11 and I had just updated Third party sware called birthday book over the internet.

You must repair the HD, your best bet is DiskWarrior from Alsoft...

  • G4 powerbook shuts itself down on startup

hello, my g4 1.33ghz powerbook has been an absolute workhorse for the past 5 years without 1 single glitch... until now. I have been getting kernel panics (sometimes) on startup, 2 different types (corrupt stack) and (invalid pmap). At first, after about 3 attempts my powerbook would startup and run fine. When I got it to boot up I would run the disk utility to attempt to repair the hard drive, it would find an error but would be unable to fix it. I tried over and over to no avail. After a few hours of this, the laptop stopped booting up at all, it wont even start to load OSX, just freezes on the grey screen and turns itself off.
I have 2 powerbooks, and done a lot of reading on this matter. I have reset the pram, changed the ram around with ram i know that works (from my other powerbook) in several configurations (ie different ram slots) and tried booting from the factory disc (computer still freezes), tried to boot from tech tool delux disc (freezes the same as booting from factory disc). I have hooked up via firewire to my working powerbook and have run disc utility, and it finds a disc error but cannot fix it.
I am 3 1/2 hours drive from the nearest mac service centre so I am trying to diagnose as best i can prior to going on a long return trip. I am thinking along the lines of a dead hard drive. All my data is backed up on external hard drives, so this would be no big deal. Does any one have any ideas? Or have experienced the same/similar problems and managed to fix them? I have done some research on replacing the hard drive and this seems like a relatively easy process, and the drives themselves seem pretty cheap so maybe something I could address myself? Any help on this matter greatly appreciated.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Notebook hard drives have an average useful life of 3-5 years, so if yours is the original drive, it is likely dying or dead. What does Disk Utility have to say about the S.M.A.R.T. status? Finding errors that cannot be repaired is not a good sign, and often an indication of a failing hard drive.
However, you should be able to boot from a disc, even if the hard drive is not working. I am concerned that the freezing when booted from a disc may indicate some other problem.
Are you able to boot and run the extended version of the Apple Hardware Test? If so, that might give a clue as to what is happening in the form of an error code.
In my opinion, your hard drive has failed. But there may be some other problem as well.
One thing to try would be to purchase a replacement hard drive along with a FireWire enclosure for it. You could try installing the OS on the external and see if it would run the PB. If the PB will run from the external, then you could simply remove the drive from the external and install it in the PB. If the PB proves to be beyond repair, you will still have an external firewire drive, which is always useful.
Good places to get drives are OWC and Newegg--both often have specials. And I like OWC's Mercury on the Go firewire enclosures with the reliable Oxford 911+ chipset.
    You know about ifixit, right?
    http://www.ifixit.com/
I think the "invalid pmap" might mean "invalid partition map", but I don't know what "corrupt stack" might refer to. No doubt someone else knows and can shed some light. It would probably be good to gather some further insights about the freezing before purchasing anything.
    Good luck!

  • PowerBook will not boot up

    Hi,
I've recently been experiencing a problem with my PowerBook intermittently failing to startup and would appreciate any help in narrowing down the source of the problem.
When I press the silver powerkey, I do not hear the startup chime, and there is no drive noise. However, the power indicator light on the power adapter changes to green if it was orange and the caps lock and num lock lights also respond, sometimes there is fan noise. Occasionally I have noticed a weird phenomenon whereby the num lock light responded to volume / F5 key rather than the num lock / F6 key!
Previously I have an encountered a problem where the computer failed to wake from sleep on a few different occassions. Could this be symptomatic of the same problem?
    * Once successfully booted, the computer is fine and I can restart several times without problem, however once shut down I don't know if it will restart again.
    * I have tried resetting the PMU by pressing the reset under the keyboard, the first time this seemed to remedy the problem but since then it has made no difference.
    * I have run the Hardware Test CD and everything came out fine (HD, CD/DVD, Logic Board, RAM etc)
    * I have just updated to OS 10.4.8 from 10.4.7 and that does not seem to have made any difference.
I read on another post that this kind of thing could be caused by a dodgy/depleted backup battery, however my main battery appears to be jammed so I can't remove it to force the backup to charge (any ideas on that too?!)
Hope someone can suggest something, its driving me mad not being able to rely on it...
    thanks

  • Powerbook won't boot from hard drive or restore disk

I've looked through some of the older posts here and none of them exactly matches my problem, and I've tried just about any possible solution I can think of.
I recently noticed that my PowerBook was acting a bit strange. It was making more fan noises than usual, and sometimes the computer would make the very last noise it makes as it shuts down (which is the hard drive coming to rest, I suppose?), though the computer would still be running. Then, yesterday the computer froze and I hit command-control-power, and when the computer restarted it gave me a folder icon blinking between a question mark and the Mac logo.
I tried restarting again, but I had no luck. Now when I try to start up I get the start-up chime, then I get one of three things:
    1) If I restart it without a CD in the drive, I get the blinking folder.
    2) If I restart it with the Software Restore and Install DVD in (but without holding down the C key), it gets to the Apple logo and shows the spinning pinwheel or whatever you want to call it, then freezes and some nasty horizontal bars pop across the screen.
    3) If I restart it with the Restore & Install DVD in and I hold down the C key, it gives me the Apple logo, then the "Your computer has encountered a problem and needs to be restarted" box pops up.
I tried zapping the PRAM--no luck. I tried Open Firmware; the screen pops up, then I type in "mac-boot" and I get the same thing as in #2 above.
I used the Hardware Test CD; it told me that there was a Mass Storage error with the error code 2STF/1/4. That doesn't sound too pleasant.
I'm not sure what caused it; perhaps it was a heat thing, but I moved it too a different surface. All the hardware is original except for the Airport card, which has worked fine since Christmas. The only recent software changes I've made were updating to the newest versions of iTunes and Firefox. It doesn't seem like a hard drive problem, since the boot CD won't work.
Am I doomed to sending Apple a couple hundred bucks to fix this? The laptop is right at three years old, so even if I'd had AppleCare it would be expiring right about now. Or is it time to buy one of those MacBooks? Or just buy a couple PC's and use each one till it breaks, then throw it out?
    Thanks,
    Kevin

I finally got to another Mac. I installed Mac OS X onto my Firewire drive, then hooked up the drive to my Powerbook and used the Startup Manager. The drive showed up on Startup Manager and I chose to boot from it. When I did, the startup process continued briefly, then froze just like it does when I try to boot from the CD.
I know my Powerbook's hard drive is shot, and to be honest, I'm fine with that--there isn't any critical, essential data on there. I tried starting the Powerbook up in Target Disk mode, but that doesn't work either--I hear the chime, press T, but the screen stays black.
Now my question is: can I rip the hard drive out? Or do I have not only a bad hard drive, but also something else gone wrong? I'm not opposed to buying a new internal hard drive and installing it myself if that will fix the problem; what I don't want to do is spend a few hundred bucks to take it to someone who's only going to tell me that my omputer is now a paperweight.
Also, my Powerbook isn't one of the ones with a recalled battery. The computer can get pretty hot, even when sitting on a desk, but I just figured that was normal.
    Thanks,
    Kevin
