PowerBook G4 DVI w/Dead Internal Primary Fan, Replacement Parts Questions

Hey Everyone,
I'm preparing to replace the primary fan on a PowerBook G4 DVI. I have a spare, used primary fan, but lack the rubber pins.
Does anyone know where these little things can be purchased online separate from the fan kit itself? I did some searching on Google with no luck.
Thanks for any leads/suggestions!

Rather doubt they are available separately, but you may want to try these places:

You can purchase parts from http://partsurfer.hp.com or any online retailer if you can locate the HP part number.  Just type your model number (or Product Number) into the search field on Partsurfer.

I have the same problem in a 2Gen MBP 17. Not sure about the part numbers you listed.
I found the parts here but I have not yet ordered but I did remove the offending fan from my Mac and took a can of compressed air to it and that part on power bookmedic.com look to be an exact match for my 17.
You will want to double check the model I picked 15 C2D MBP to link

There's no way ot find its dimensions or model?
Do you think i can replace it with any other fan?

  • PowerBook G4 (DVI)  dead?

    Hi,
    I have a PowerBook G4 (DVI) - 667mhz, 2x512mb ram, 32vram, 40gb, airport, pcmcia 2x2.0 USB.
Yesterday I was VJ'ing at one party. Everyting seems to be fine. After all I turned PB off and went home. Today I tryed to turn on my PB, but it won't torn on! There is no chime sound.
Pressing the power button results in dvd drive noise, and hard drive spin up, plus fans. But nothing else. And No chime!
When I force shutdown my powerbook couple of times and then try to boot it, I hear 4 beeps and white sleep light starts flashing. But nothing happens.
    The screen is always black.
I do have power to the kbd, as evidenced by the caps lock light working, but not much else.
I tried putting Tiger disk in and booting. No dice. Now i have the Tiger disk in the pb but it still wont book or even get to a chime.
I've tried all the other stuff, PMU, removing and reseating RAM, etc. but all i get is drive spinup noise and some fan noise.
Thanks in advance for any kind of help!
I can't live without my PowerBook..
    P.s.: sorry for bad english..
    PowerBook G4 DVI Mac OS X (10.4.3) 667mhz, 1gb ram, 32vram, 40gb, 15", airport, pcma

    Hi sopp,
Doesn't sound good. According to Beep Definitions, "4 beeps = no good boot images in the boot ROM (and/or bad sys config block)."
Given that it won't boot from an install disc, the issue must be hardware related, and if the beep def is correct, the ROM is corrupt on your logic board. Unfortunately, I've never heard of anyone repairing a LB, so the "repair" is actually a replacement LB. Given the cost (check ebay and ifixit.com), not sure you'll want to sink that much money and effort into your PB . . . .
You've already tried much of what I would try in your situation, but if you want to try some more troubleshooting (unlikely to help, but you never know):
-Try booting with just one of the RAM modules at a time, and try each one separately in each slot.
-Remove the bottom cover and keyboard, gently tighten up all the screws you can find, and try booting with the bottom cover removed.
    -Orange Ribbon Cable Issue/Fix
-Unplug the HD and try booting from the install disc.
-Unplug the optical drive and try booting normally.
    Good luck to you.

  • HD invisible in Powerbook Ti DVI

I think the problem I'm having with Tiger not seeing my internal hard drive is with my logic board. I sent my Powerbook Ti DVI in to IResq, and they determined that I had a bad logic board, so I replaced it. I bought a used board and installed it, but no matter what I did, Tiger did not see the hard drive. The Powerbook would not boot in safe mode at all, instead giving me a kernel panic. I was able to get Tiger to boot off of the install DVD, but no hard drive. I sent that board back, but I'm having similar problems with its replacement. I was told that the hard drive I sent them to test for incompatibility with the logic board had a bad image on it.
I have checked and double-checked all connections to the logic board, including the two connectors from the hard drive, and they all look secure to me. I have tried two different hard drives, the original 20g and the 120g I replaced it with. On the previous replacement logic board, Disk Utility found the 120g when I connected it as an external drive. My original logic board had no problem with either hard drive. In single-user mode, it gives me the message that Extension "com.apple.driver.KeyLargoATA" has no kernel dependency. Is this related to the hard drive?
I have some Powerbook restore discs with Mac OS9. Four of them are labeled Software Restore, and one is labeled Software Install. Would the Apple Hardware Test be on any of these discs? Is there anything else I can try to determine what part I would need to replace to get my Powerbook up and running again?
Any suggestions you have would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
    Lisa

Is there a possibility that the HD connector on the logic board itself would be defective?
Possible, yes. Common, no. The cable itself is much more common, though not "common" either.
The 120g drive was recognized in Disk Utility when I put it in an external drive enclosure and plugged it in via USB. I also verified and repaired permissions on the drive. Verify disk reported no errors.
Would make sense with bad HD cable.
I will try to reformat the hard drive, but I'm still concerned about the fact that I can't consistently boot the Powerbook from the install DVD. Is that normal for a Powerbook if its only problem is the HD cable?
Sorry, I didn't catch that in original post. There have been reports here that bad a bad HD or cable or optical drive or cable or other components have prevented proper functioning, but it's certainly not common. Try disconnecting the HD altogether and booting from install disc.
I can order a new cable if that will be the fix.
Can't guarantee that. It's simply trial and error troubleshooting.
I guess at some point I will decide to stop sinking money into an obsolete 'Book.
    Good to consider.
I've already replaced the display on it in addition to the logic board (both used)
Not at the same time I hope. For the price of those two items, I'm guessing you could have purchased a perfectly functioning used PB, or been quite a way toward a new PB.

  • Is my DVI port dead?

15" powerbook G4. I plugged a 22" Acer into it that natively runs at 1680x1050. It picks up the display and properly configures itself to run at that resolution and even seems to work fine for the first little bit, but then I get extensive DVI corruption. (it looks like bad TV reception) I have ensured that the cable is in as snug as possible. I know the monitor works as I've used it on other machines. In fact, it's currently sitting here plugged into a brand new macbook and everything is peachy. But it won't work with the powerbook. I think I've used the powerbook's DVI port maybe a small handful of times over the years and honestly, I can't remember if it ever worked.
I guess I'm hoping maybe there's some sort of configuration problem I am unaware of or something. I like my powerbook, even though it's really getting ancient now.

I am unsure of what model this is beyond its being a 15" powerbook G4, 1ghz model with onboard FX5200 (I mention the display because I remember it being one of the few things that differed between the models). I can't remember what adapters it came with so I can't try those out. I'm not sure where they even are (I know I have them, just not sure where I put them). This is an old computer, lol.
I only have one free standing display so I can't try any others. I know the monitor works, though, as it works fine with other machines.
This isn't a big deal; I plan to replace this thing with a Macbook Air next year. I was just curious.

  • Using iMac with dead internal drive long term

I've got a friend with an iMac with a definitely dead internal HDD. Got it back running with an external and it seems to work. We also selected that external as the default start up in System Prefs.
I'm curious was to whether, however, he can just run it forever with that HDD inside. I'm not at his machine, but when working on it I saw some evidence that there were attempts to access it, from like mds for Spotlight, and so on. If it was one of mine I'd at least yank the drive, but he doesn't wanna pay to repair it and is quite content with the external. But we'd like to know if that wonky drive is gonna cause issues, or if there's a way through software to disable it forever.

Add it to Spotlight's Privacy prefPane to preclude indexing. That's all that needs doing.

  • Dead Internal Speakers

I've read other posts about dead internal speakers on eMac. My wife's computer has same problem-- eMac 1G 10.3.9 where internal speakers don't work but headphones do work (haven't tried external speakers). In system prefs, there is no option for selecting anything other than "headphones" even when the headphones are not plugged in. I don't know if our kids were blasting iTunes or if they just died. So far I've trashed the soundpref file and restarted (while resetting PRAM), but to no avail.
I posted this topic as I don't believe anyone ever found a solution (or diagnosed the likely problem). Past suggestions have been to use the headphones or get external speakers. Bummer as we need external sound and don't want anymore office clutter.
    Thanks.

I wanted to add this other piece of info:
I opened the Sound option in system preferences and selected the Output option. At that option, nothing changes in the Output option when I plug in or unplug headphones into the headphone jack. The headphones do work when plugged-in.
I did the same on my children's iMac CRT running same version of X (Panther) and noticed the output device name toggles between "internal speakers" and "headphones" as you plug the headphone jack in/out.
This makes me wonder if the female jack on the eMac is somehow stuck/defective. Anyone w/ info. on how to further troubleshoot this?

  • Replacement for dead internal Suerdrive

Hello and I do hope you are in a position to offer some sound advice please.
I have an iMac which has a dead internal SuperDrive:-
      Model Name:
    iMac
      Model Identifier:
    iMac4,1
      Processor Name:
    Intel Core Duo
      Processor Speed:
    1.83 GHz

      Total Number Of Cores:
    2
      L2 Cache:
    2 MB
      Memory:
    2 GB
      Bus Speed:
    667 MHz
I have a need to burn a CD now and again alongside loading music from CD's onto my iMac and into iTunes.
Read that a new external SuperDrive would NOT work with my machine so instead opted for an LG Slim Portable DVD Writer GP60NS50.
Issue is my iMac will not recognise this USB optic drive and will not list it as an alternative drive to burn CD's or read.
Can anyone kindly offer any advice on a suitable CD/Optical drive that is available in the UK that is simply plug and play and will work with my computer?
    Many thanks in advance.

Hi and thanks for taking the time to reply.
Nope with a cd in or out this drive is just not recognised which is a real shame.
Looked at various solutions and believe it may be a power issue?
The drive powers up ok but is just not showing on the system profiler.
Any ideas or halo would be most welcome
    Thanks in advance.

  • Dead power supply fan

The power supply fan on my 2002 Quicksilver Dual 1gig G4 just quit and I am obviously concerned about the ramifications. I've read a few posts in different places about fan replacements but not sure I am up to that. Does anyone have any advice / cautions about power supply replacement?
Unfortunately this is my only computer and I can't really afford the downtime if I take it somewhere. I have reasonable confidence in my ability to do the work (I've added hard drives, replaced the cd drive, ram etc.). Any tips and especially a lead on a good (inexpensive) hardware source would be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    John
    2002 Quicksilver dual 1g G4

You'll need to remove the power supply from the computer and open it up to access the fan. Installing the new fan may involve splicing its leads to the existing ones attached to the circuit board. Beyond the fan's physical size, you need to match its voltage rating and output (measured in CFM), so that you buy a suitable replacement. The fan's noise level (dBA) should also be considered, so compare the specs on that. According to the info on this page, the fan's specs are:
Protechnic 80x80x25mm MAGIC (made by Sechang Micro)
    12 Volt, 0.24 Amp
    38.27 CFM, 3000 RPM (max), 29 dBA

  • Dual CPU fans in IQ816 Question

I have received the fatal error message indicating that my wife's IQ816 CPU fan is dead.
When I opened up the unit I found that one of the 2 CPU fans was indeed not functioning (FYI there are a total of 3 fans in the IQ816s). The fans part number (on the part) is 13G075205000H2 which translates to HP part number 489487-001, and I have ordered a couple of these already.
However, the second CPU fan (located right next to the other one) has part number 13G075205030H2 and I have not been able to find this part number anywhere (it is the same as the first part number with one of the 0s changed to a 3 so it is possible that the same part number may be okay with both, but I have no way of knowing that).
Could someone please let me know what the HP part number is for the 13G075205030H2 as I know this fan will die eventually, and I would like to be prepared with the replacement part in hand.
    Thanks in advance,
    Don McFarland

For those who may read this thread who are not familiar with PC hardware issues, there are some basic parts which can go bad and cause a machine to no longer function. Historically, manufacturers produce these parts so that customers who need them can keep their machine up and running rather than having to buy a new one. These parts include...
    (1) CPU - okay, chances are good that the CPU manufacturer will take care of this being available
    (2) CPU Fan - on newer machines, the BIOS will not allow the machine to boot if a CPU fan is not working - whether or not these are available is largely up to the part that was selected by HP - there is no guaruntee that the part will be available unless HP makes that happen.
    (3) Memory - okay, chances are good that a memory manufacturer will take care of this being available
    (4) Hard Drive - there are plenty of hard drives out there to choose from
Note that of these 4 items, HP is off the hook on 3 of them due to the stock that other vendors maintain, namely the CPU, Memory and Hard drive. The least expensive (by a longshot) critical part is the CPU Fan/heat-sink (production cost is a few dollars).  One has to ask oneself, why HP would not make these parts available, because without them, a $2000+ computer (IQ-816 for example when they first came out) becomes a worthless piece of &^%^.
I am really having a hard time believing this sad state of affairs. For anyone reading this, make note that it does not matter how much you paid for your high end HP computer when it comes time for replacement parts, because HP is not taking the responsibility that they should to look after their customers - it may run for a couple of years or so, but when the trouble hits, you may find yourself in the same situation that I am in (i.e. can't get a part that is necessary for the computer to run).

  • New internal hard drive replacement not seen - why?

I have replaced the internal Seagate Momentus 7200RPM, 160Gb drive on my 2007, 17 inch MBP- with a Seagate Momentus 7200RPM 500 GB.  I used Super Duper to clone the original drive - and the new drive will boot up OK - BUT only when in an external enclosure!  Not as the new internal drive.
I am using Mountain Lion 10.8.2
When it is in place in the MBP at start up I get the flashing Question mark.  I have tried booting from another backup drive - to use Disk Utility to repair the new drive.  but it does not show up!  I have also tried booting from OS Mountain Lion on a flash drive - but, again I cannot 'see' the new Seagate internal drive to repair it!
I have checked all the connections (taken the new drive out and put it back in several times) all connections appear to be Ok.
I have tried resetting PRAM - no difference.
So, why does it only work when connected as an external drive - and does not show up when connected as an internal drive?
    PLEASE - can anyone help?
    thanks
    Alan

Hi again  - thanks!  I recall the cable snaking around and it certainly does look as in your pic.
As I put in my first post - I do have an enclosure and it does work from that.  However, it is only via USB 2 so is slow.  As I write I have booted up from my Firewire 800 backup drive.
I will explore bot iFixit and Powerbook medic and see if they can send these parts to me - so thanks to you both for all this helpful advice!
One final question - since it WAS working when I first took out the original drive it may be that I have EITHER pulled too hard and broken a connector - or just pulled one loose
Is ther any way I can test?  How are the other ends connected?  The large block of double connectors to the drive is clear - but I have not tried specifically to remove any other ends!

  • Ti4800SE needs fan replacement

I have a Geforce 4 Ti4800SE card and the fan was at a dead halt when I took my system apart the other day.  I took apart the HSF assembly and lubed up the fan to get it spinning freely again.  It's ok for the time being, but I'd like to replace the cooling unit.  It uses that Top Tech cooling http://www.msicomputer.com/msiforms/TOP.asp
I haven't been able to find the replacement parts for it anywhere and I was hoping someone here could point me in the right direction.  I'm not looking for anything fancy as I don't overclock etc.  The stock replacement unit would be fine or I'd be open to any other suggestions.  Thanks!
