I have a Powerbook G4 that I want to use my iphone3Gs on. But after the new upgrade for iphone I can't use it on the Powerbook only my Windows. My iTunes is 9.2.1 When I tried to use it, it said I need 10.5.8. I have the upgrade but when I tried to install it it said I need an Intel based Mac. How can I upgrade to be able to use my iphone?

I have a PowerBook 145B but something is wrong with the systemfolder so it wont boot. I've downloaded System 7.0.1 from Apple and put it on Floppys with my Macintosh Classic. The PowerBook boots from the floppy but after a minute it just comes up a window thats completely white.
I've tried a lot of things, but my Macintosh classic (with original floppys) runs 7.0.0. And the PowerBook needs atleast 7.0.1 and did run 7.1.0 as original OS.
    How do I fix this?

Because your PowerBook 145B shipped with OS 7.1, it can't run an earlier version of the Mac OS, such as 7.0.1.  Unfortunately, Apple never made OS 7.1 available for download.  You can run OS 7.5.1, 7.5.3, and 7.5.5 on your PowerBook, but I'd recommend doing so with the maximum amount of supported memory - 8 MBs.  The 19-part download of OS 7.5.3 is segmented, so that each one will fit on a 1.44 MB floppy disk.  The problem is that the 19-diskette set isn't an installer set as such, having no bootable disk.  It's solely intended to be used to transfer the individual segments to the resident hard drive in the computer.  Once that's done, double-clicking the first .smi segment creates the OS 7.5.3 installer disk image on the desktop, which you drag onto the hard drive icon.  This produces a folder with the OS 7.5.3 installer in it.  I've done this before with an old Mac LC and it works.  You can also download the 3-diskette OS 7.5.5 Update and run that.  These downloads can be found on the same page where you found the OS 7.0.1 download: Older Software Downloads.

    By all means get iLife but just for the record you don't HAVE to use Apple's photo application;
there are many more around, quite a lot of them free.

  • How to boot Powerbook G4 from USB hard drive using Mcintosh v10.5.2 install

Well I am Rider and I have been a mac user for at least 8 years. By far these OS's are the most advanced I have ever seen and it blows every other OS out of the water. My dad bought a Powerbook G4 8 years ago and it lasted 3 years till the hard drive crashed. My dad had it taken out and we still have the Powerbook G4 under the bed. When we bought a new macbook that came with the install disk 10.5.2, I was wondering if there was any way to use a USB 16gb Flash Drive as a hard drive and start up disk.
I have tried sticking the Install Disk in the G4 and after it says choose language for primary install, it says 'Mac OS X cannot be installed on this computer'. It gives a few utilities to use such as Disk Utility, Start up Disk, Net Utility, etc.
So if anybody knows how I can boot a G4 from a USB using Mac OS X install disk 10.5.2, *PLEASE HELP*.
    Thankyou,
    Rider M.

  • What is open firmware command to boot a Powerbook G4 from a CF card in the PCMCIA slot?

I have a Powerbook G4 Titanium with a bad motherboard that will no longer power the internal hard drive. I want to to install an OS and boot from a CF card in the PCMCIA slot. I understand this has to be done from Openfirmware, but I cannot figure out the command to do it.Does anyone know?

    Charles,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
What I've found so far is a non-Apple solution drivers.
I assume you've found the IO Xperts driver. (http://www.ioxperts.com/products/80211b_X.html)
Is there an Apple developed solution out
    there for third party cards?
Not exactly. Apple uses the Broadcom chipset. Some third-party manufacturers also use the Broadcom chipset and those cards would then work with the AirPort drivers. Here is a link to a list of wireless cards that note the chipset, OS and driver.
    http://home.earthlink.net/~metaphyzx/Wireless.htm
(Note: the list is dated August 2005.)
Manufacturers change their chipset so the version number of the card will make a difference. For example, the list shows that the Linksys WPC54G uses the Broadcom chipset. Well, that is true with version 1. Version 2 uses a Texas Instrument chipset and version 4 uses the Inprocomm chipset, which means these two do not work with the AirPort Driver.
I use the Linksys WPC54GS v1.0 (SpeedBooster) that uses Broadcom. It was plug 'n play.
It is hard to get an original Airport card today.
A quick search found a number of sellers, but they cost 2-to-3 times more than a third party card. (I didn't check eBay.) A third-party card also avails you to the faster option of 802.11g.
    Hope this helps.

  • How can I update my PowerBook Pro from OS X 10.5.8?

I'd like to upgrade some of my software, but I need to upgrade my operating system first.  I have an 2.4 GHz Intel Dual Core 2 Processor,   2BG 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM. and 21 GB free on my HD.  Do I need to update to 10.6, then 10.7, then 10.8 etc or can I directly update to OSX 10.8?

You have a MacBook Pro, not a PowerBook. You need to upgrade to 10.6 first (http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573Z/A/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard), but then you can upgrade to any later version you want. Here are the requirements for the latest OS versions (they're the same for 10.8, 10.9, 10.10): http://apple.com/osx/specs.
Mountain Lion (10.8) is available here: http://store.apple.com/us/product/D6377Z/A/os-x-mountain-lion. Mavericks (10.9) is no longer available, and once you have 10.6.8, you can download OS X Yosemite (10.10, the latest) from the Mac App Store. If your Mac isn't compatible, you can still download Lion (10.7): http://store.apple.com/us/product/D6106Z/A/os-x-lion.

  • Can't boot my Powerbook G4 from a DVD

I am going to give my Powerbook G4 to a friend, so I thought I would wipe the drive and reinstall to OS. I was running 10.39. I started zeroing the drive and it locked. It finally quit booting from the DVD, so I connected it to my MacPro Intel with firewire and initialized the hard drive.
I reset the Pram several times and have tried to boot from the 3.9 DVD with C and option keys, neither will boot up from the DVD. The option key gives me 2 folders, 3/4 circle arrow and straight arrow. Clicking them doesn't get me anywhere.
I tried to load the OS from my MacPro but it won't let me, since I have 10.5 loaded on it.
    Any ideas?

    MaplegroveBob,
The flashing question mark folder means that the computer can not find a valid system folder to boot to.
What does it say "exactly" on the cd or dvd that you are trying to boot to? It should have an OS version # and say if it is a cd or dvd disk. Is this the original install disk for the PowerBook or a full retail install disk for 10.3.x Panther?
What happens when you reboot holding the "x" key down (without the disk you are trying to use in the drive)? edit: Strike that, as you said you wiped the drive so there won't be a system to bootup to. If the disks are the correct original install or a full retail install disk for 10.3 and it does not boot then either the drive is damaged or the disk your using is damaged I would imagine.

  • If I upgrade my Powerbook G3 from 9.2.2 to OS X, can I still us older progr

I have a Powerbook G3, 500 mhz, 512mb RAM, running OS 9.2.2. I am interested in upgrading to OS X, but using "classic" for older programs. I have two questions:
    1. Do I have to delete OS 9 before installing OS X and re-install OS 9 or do I install OS X over OS 9?
    2. My wife has Photoshop (I think it's 5.5), Illustrator and Pagemaker running in OS 9.2.2 She rarely uses them (hasn't for over a year) but would like to have the option of using it in case something comes up. Will these work under classic just as they do under 9.2.2? It's just not worth upgrading them for the little use they get.
Thanks for whatever insight you may provide.

    RMBA,
    1.
If you have not already updated the firmware on your PowerBook G3 500 MHz (FireWire), you will need to do so before installing OS X 10.2 or higher. The firmware update must be installed when you are booted up in OS 9 from your hard drive.
This link provides additional information and instructions.
Mac OS X: Available firmware updates
    2.
As posted earlier, you will be able to start up in either OS 9 or OS X. Classic is an OS X environment for running Mac OS 9 applications. To use Classic when running in OS X, you will need to use System Preferences –> Classic and point OS X to your OS 9.2.2 System Folder. When you open an OS 9 application, Classic will start up, but you remain running in OS X.
    3.
Both OS X 10.3.9 and 10.4.9 run very well on my PowerBook G3 500 MHz (FireWire) machine. I swapped out the original hard drive for a larger one and increased the RAM to 1 GB. The Graphics card is the original, an ATI Rage Mobility 128 — type: RageM3p–parent — name: ATY,RageM3pParent — model: ATY,RageM3.

  • Can I, and if so how do I updgrade my PowerBook G4 from OSX 10.5 to 10.5.6 or higher?

I purchased and installed OS X 10.5 to my Powerbook PPC G4 this evening without any trouble. It did take me a little work to figure out how to get iTunes/Quicktime upgraded and working properly but the ASC had some great answers. My problem now is upgrading/updating my Safari 3.0.4 and my Adobe Flash 9. I found updates for Safari for the old 10.4.11 sadly AFTER I installed the new OS. I downloaded the next version for Leopard, but it says I need a newer OS for the 5.0.6 that I finally tracked down. I can find newer versions of Flash Player, but all want my OS updated. I have searched without success for reliable information about what I need to do to go as far as I can with OS X. ANY help would be greatly appreciated. As my user name implies, I've been afraid since OS 9 was retired. I started early in the '80s with an old Performa and knew my way around it blindfolded. I'm pretty much at a loss when it comes to the newer systems. Please simplify any information you have for me 'cause I might as well be a full fledged newbie right now. Are there downloads that increase a little at a time or is there a larger update that will get me where I need to go in one install? I know there are all kinds of questions about this but honestly I haven't found any that helped me. I've been at this for nearly 5 hours now and I'm getting cross eyed. If you need more information that I have provided here, please let me know. Also, I have an iMac with Intel Core Duo that I'll be working on next.. after I get this little notebook that could where it needs to be. I LOVE this computer and will hang on to it until the end. I still have my old Performa and two of the old colored iMacs stuck in closets. *L* Again, I appreciate any help you can give me. Here's what I'm running:
      Model Name:    PowerBook G4 15"
      Model Identifier:    PowerBook5,6
      Processor Name:    PowerPC G4  (1.2)
      Processor Speed:    1.5 GHz
      Number Of CPUs:    1
L2 Cache (per CPU):    512 KB
      Memory:    1.5 GB
      Bus Speed:    167 MHz

Thanks SO much! I was afraid that it might think this old laptop could use it and install something that would kill it. But it found exactly what I needed and it's up and running. As for adobe, it looks like I've gone as far as I can with it since I have a powerpc, but I can live with that. Many thanks and I appreciate you not making fun of an aging Apple junkie. *S*

  • Time Machine and Powerbook away from external hard drive

    According to Apple's Web site:
+"When your mobile Mac is connected to your backup drive, Time Machine works as you’d expect. When it isn’t connected, Time Machine also works as you’d expect. It keeps track of which files have changed since the last backup and backs them up accordingly."+
except this doesn't seem to be happening for me.
Everything is exactly as I'd expect when I'm in the office connected to my external hard drive - hourly backups during the day. However, if I'm away from my desk for a few hours and then come back to the hard drive and plug it in I'd expect (from the description above) to see the hourly backups appear in time machine for when I had my Macbook switched on. If I'm away for a couple of days I'd expect to see one backup per day.
So, here is my question, if I'm not actually connected to my firewire attached Lacie hard drive is Time Machine doing anything? It would help me if I create a file away from my desk that I have the hourly time machine backups held locally to retrieve if needed. If this is not the way it works, it's not the end of the world for me, I just need to be aware that the latest backup will be when I had the external drive connected and I'm getting nothing while I'm away - and maybe Apple chould clarify their marketing blurb .
    David.

    You are welcome.
Also keep in mind that while the drive is connected you can initiate a Back Up Now at any time (right click the Time Machine icon in the dock). So if you are about to try something worrisome or complex with your system or your data files, you can trigger a backup, do your task, and know the backup is there to recover from so long as it's still the same day. I.e., you can make the incremental backups happen more frequently than hourly by explicitly requesting them when you want them.
The thing that confuses most people is probably this idea of hourly backups becoming daily and then weekly. They are not merged when that happens. Of all the backups taken in a given day, only one survives. And of the seven of those in a given week, only one survives, even though there is still plenty of room on the drive. And when the drive runs short of room the oldest backups start getting deleted (although you are asked before that happens, just in case you want to start afresh with a new drive). So the backup that survives as the daily backup is a complete snapshot of your file system at that specific point in time, without regard to changes that might have been captured in other hourly backups during the same day.
So Time Machine works best with files that stick around for a while or when you discover a file has been accidentally damaged or deleted relatively soon after that happens.

  • Can I upgrade my PowerBook G4 from Mac OS X Tiger to Snow Leopard?

I am running Mac OS X Tiger 10.4.11 on my PowerBook G4. Can I upgrade to v10.6 Snow Leopard? Just asking because I never upgraded to v10.5 Leopard. Are there any adverse impacts of doing this for my PowerBook G4?

    Hi jjhron;
As Stedman says you can't go to Snow Leopard with your G4 PowerBook but if your PB meets the specs for Leopard you can upgrade to that instead.

  • Upgrading Powerbook G4 from USB 1 to USB 2

Can someone tell me is it possible to upgrade a Powerbook G4 15" which is fitted with two USB1 ports to USB2, please? I would probably take it to an Apple Store rather than attempt it myself.
    Thank you.

The combination of a CardBus -> USB2 adapter card and an AC-powered USB2 hub, while not great for portability, should provide adequate power to any bus-powered USB2 device and enable you to connect it to your Powerbook.
USB2 adapter cards generally run $10-20. You can pay more, but you aren't getting more. Such cards are Mac-compatible even if their packaging doesn't say so. None of them can supply as much power as your Powerbook's built-in USB ports without either an auxiliary cable that connects the card to one of those ports, or an external AC adapter that supplies power to the card. With either of those accessories, an AC-powered hub is likely to be unnecessary unless you want to connect and operate two or more USB bus-powered devices at the same time.

  • Cant start my powerbook G4 from start up

UNABLE TO FIND THE SOLUTION TO MY PROBLEM

Could you provide a little more information?  Describe what does happen .... assuming that you have a charged battery (LEDs light up when pressed on the battery) and/or plugged into an operating wall electrical socket.  You push the start button and what happens? Does anything display on the screen? Does the Powerbook DVD drive make noises? etc .... This type of information will help us to help you.

  • Updating Powerbook G4 from OS10.2.3 to OS10.2.8

    I just purchased an ipod.
it requires OS10.2.8 or newer and suggests OS10.4.3
I have been online (dial up 56k - SLOW mo Joe) for hours trying to find answers.
I am running OS 10.2.3 and all indicators say I need to upgrade in steps starting with 10.2.4 then 10.2.5 then 10.2.6 then 10.2.8. All of which require hours of download time.
Will my powerbook G4 accept 10.4.3 or at least 10.2.8?
Can I upgrade strait to either?
Do I need Tiger, Pather or Jaguar?
    Will my Powerbook Accept either?
I perfer the updating to 10.2.8 if possible.

I have a powerbook G4 bought 5 years ago. My computer is configured:-Hardware Overview:

And I need to upgrade to a higher level as more and more software updates for my other devices will not work with Panther. Can I go direct to snoe leopard or what should I do?

Leopard 10.5 is as high as you can go. Snow Leopard 10.6 requires an Intel processor Mac. You can also run Tiger 10.4. You should also up RAM to 1GB.
