Powerbook g4 hanging

Hi got a model A1138 powerbook 15" that is hanging on start up. I get the start up sound, grey apple, and then it changes to what I presume is Terminal status with the following white text on black.
Darwin Kernel Version 8.11.0: Wed Oct 10 18:26:00 PDT 2007; root:xnu-792.24.17~1/RELEASE_PPC
panic(cpu 0 caller 0xFFFF0003): 0x300 Data access
Latest stack backtrace for cpu 0:
this goes on to
Exception state (sv=0x37A59C80)
the next line has 7 phrases beginning with PC=0x000000000;
It then repeats this whole sequence a few times then hangs with
panic: We are hanging here. . .
I've tried the various restarts such as start with the shift key, and start with the system disk but so far nothing has worked. They system disk wont eject now as well.
Anyone any clues. Even just getting the system disk to eject would be good.
Regards
Daryll

Restart the computer with the Option, Command, O, and F keys held down. Issue the following italicized commands:
eject cd ( Return)
mac-boot (Return)
The CD should now be out of the drive.

• Powerbook Suddenly Hanging

My problem started a couple weeks ago when my powerbook would hang when (usually) closing applications or a few minutes after startup. I had a hard drive crash and the apple hardware test basically told me it was fried. After a couple days I happened to try again and could boot but would hang soon after. I also tried with the install cd (original) and was able to erase/repair the hard drive, minus the volumebit. I couldn't install os x again however. I bought a lacie external firewire drive, intending to at least get the computer working again through the end of the semester, but I'm unable to even get past the installer intro screen. It allows me to select the language, then reads all the packages, and hangs there. I can't open any menus, press continue (though it ungreys), but I can drag the window around. Or if I open disk utlity, it hangs when reading disks (so I couldn't format the new drive). I've tried a couple install cds that I know for sure work, but they all hang at the exact same places. I also tried installing mac os x from a friend's computer, but as it's an intel duo core it wants the drive partitioned as GUID and (I'm assuming) would just install a binary version of os that wouldn't run on my powerbook. Poor comp has never had a single problem until this suddenly came on.
I'm guessing there's some other hardware component that's having issues, but I have no idea what it is. I was running 10.5.6 with 1.25gb of ram. Processor was 1.0ghz I believe.

I recently got a hold of a Powerbook G4 12" with the same problem. I tried all the same stuff. I tried to do a hardware test but it hangs before any drive or disk is recognized, even any external drive connected via firewire. I have been able to get Diskwarrior to see external drives and was able to boot from the Install disk, but the Install disk hangs before I can reinstall the OS. I'm working on it but I'm afraid it may be an issue with the logic board. Have you tried replacing the hard drive? That's going to be my next step. I'll let you know how it goes.

• PC switcher's Powerbook keep hanging

Hi all,
I became a switcher just last month and find that my Powerbook keeps hangin. I had a trusty ASUS laptop last year and it didn't flinch one bit. I even have 1.5 Gb of RAM in my powerbook and it still hangs if I run it a while.
Am I alone in experiencing this ?
Is it a heat problem ? Am using something to lift the edge up to keep the bottom cool. Main thing is when it hangs I can't seem to force quit and the only option I have is to poweroff manually via the power button.
With PC laptops CTRL-ALT-DEL is all it takes to solve unresponsiveness.
Is there any other way besides option-apple-esc ?
Cheers,
Bazz

Hi Cuda,
Do you have the SBBOD?
Can you open and keep open Activity Monitor to see what may be running in the background?
Disconnect all usb and firewire items not in use and see if that helps.
Is that third party RAM? Sometimes kernel panics are well disguised.
Are you sure you can't force quit? Click on the desktop to light up Finder and see if you can go to the Apple menu from there and force quit.

• Powerbook G4 Hangs at Startup

My Powerbook hangs on the grey apple window during start up indefinately. I have tried single mode start up and when I tried to Repair the disc it ended on the message that said 'Incorrect block count for file mach (It should be 1 instead of 0). Nothing else responded after this so I had to shut it down. When I tried repairing the permissions it hung on the repair indefinitely. I then tried the Verbose mode andit eventually seems to loop one message continuosly. The message is 'IOTABlockStorageDriver : : sCompleteZeroBlockTransfer-WARNING,completing a zero block transfer. The hard drive is accessible though through target disk mode and when I 'Option Boot' I can see the drive with its original mode.
What does this mean and how can I solve this problem? The computer is running on OS X 4.11 and I had just updated Third party sware called birthday book over the internet.

You must repair the HD, your best bet is DiskWarrior from Alsoft...

• PowerBook G4 hangs at boot

We recently added a Crucial 512MB module to a PowerBook G4 1.5 (17-inch) which worked fine for a few weeks. Apparently, the module had gone bad since now the Mac kernel panics with the chip installed. The chip was removed, but the system hangs on boot (not kernel panic like before).
I target disked the system to get the data off without any problems. Booting from the hard drive or from a Tiger DVD causes the system to hang right after the screen changes from the Apple logo to the blue Mac OS X startup screen.
I've reset the PRAM, defaults on the OpenFirmware, and reset the PMU. I've also checked the disk for errors while in target disk mode. No errors were found.
I attempted to boot the system in Single User mode and it appears to hang immediately after loading IOUSBFamily devices. Even though it states that it successfully enumerated the device, the following error is displayed...
AppleUSBHCI[0x1402000] Watchdog detected dead controller (hcca #: 12589, hc #: 13097)
I'm leaning toward a reinstall of the OS, but find it interesting that the system will hang even when attempting to boot from the Tiger DVD.
Ideas?
PowerBook G4 1.5/512/80/BT/AirPort Extreme   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

if it nangs when booted from OS DVD, problem is likely hardware.
sometimes bad hard drive will cause kernel panics and freezes.
there is supposed to be hardware test included with the original install DVD, maybe run it to see what it says.

• PowerBook G4 hangs after trying sleep mode

Hello
First at beginning: my Powerbook works since nearly 5 years without any problems (2 crashs in the first year) and I had never such a problem.
Yesterday I installed the Security patch 2006-006 (the actual) and today there was a problem (I don't know if this is connected with this patch but this was the only change).
I put a CD in the DVD-Rom. This disc was not correctly mounted. after some minutes I tried to get the disc out but all (including the output knob) fails.
After that I tried to set the Powerbook in sleep mode but then it shows onlyy a black screen and only a reset let him live again. After rebooting the CD was possible to mount. The system.log shows following lines around the event:
Oct 19 07:28:12 localhost set-hostname[424]: setting hostname to voyager.
Oct 19 07:40:21 localhost kernel: IOATAController device blocking bus.
Oct 19 07:40:34 localhost last message repeated 2 times
Oct 19 07:42:10 localhost last message repeated 3 times

Oct 19 07:42:43 localhost kernel: AppleNMI mask NMI
Jan 1 01:00:12 localhost syslogd: restart
after rebooting there is a message that teh CD was mounted correctly but there is nothing at the time the CD was inside the slot the first time:
Oct 19 07:47:11 localhost diskarbitrationd[90]: disk1s0 cd9660 00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000 RoPa'sMP36 /Volumes/RoPa'sMP36
I hope anyone can tell me what thiss failure means and how to prevent (or, if it comes with the new update, to correct this ...)
Best regards, Lefti
PowerBook G4 (Titanium)   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   old Akku (new one fails with power up)

Hi eSPee,
I tried to boot from the install disk several times already but just now once more: Held down the option key, chose the hardware test -> quick test and..system hangs after completion of the test
Have you tried running Repair Disk yet? Repair Disk: Boot from install disc (insert disc>restart>immediately hold down c key and keep holding it until you see “Preparing Installation”)>at first screen go to Installer Menu>open Disk Utility>select your HD in the panel on the left side>click Repair Disk at bottom of main window. Run this at least twice, and keep running it until it says “appears ok” twice in a row. If that doesn’t happen, you may need a stronger utility such as DiskWarrior or if the directory is damaged beyond repair, you may need to reinstall the OS, or you may have a damaged HD (repair utilities can only repair the directory structure, not the HD itself).

• Powerbook G4 hangs after few minutes of usage

Since February 06 I have a PB G4: 1.67GHZ, model Powerbook5,8
Since this weekend it hangs after a few minutes of usage.
I tried a whole load of possible solutions, like resetting the RAM, removing the battery and holding the powerbutton for 5 seconds...I even held it once for half a minute, but that didn't help. Checking the harddrive with disk utility (tried it often, but only once did the PB work long enough to get the end result: hard drive is healthy).
Often, when it hangs, I can get it to work by simply turning it off and on again. That gives me another window of 2 minutes of usage! Handy throughout the day when I need a file, or a document: I simply boot the machine, get the file and shut it down.
Carbon copy to an external HD does not work: the system hangs a few minutes after copying.
I installed a utility named applejack, and the first time I tried it, I got an interesting error: there were errors with the USB controller or USB bus, and system hangs. I didn't make a screenshot so this is out of the top of my head.
This was interesting because when I tried to make a HD copy (and believe me: I tried lots and lots of times), the system freezes first, and then an error about not unmounting a device popped into the screen. As if the touchpad, keyboards, and all other i/o devices stop working, and the system goes on for a few seconds more.
Sometimes the system just hangs, sometimes I get that black kernel panic screen.
Just before writing this, I tried the hardware test on the install CD once more:
Held down the option key, chose the hardware test -> quick test and..
system hangs after completion of the test
A message appeared in the bottom-left corner. Several lines of information, starting with:
"ERROR, Write to location ZERO detected!!, Loc zero was originally zero
Current File: Localization/en/Scripts/enAHTscript.sc"
etc
I live on a nice island in the Caribbean, so popping into the nearest Apple store means getting on a flight to Miami first.
What -if any- are my options? Is there something I can try to do myself before shipping it to Apple? Opening the case, checking this or that?
By the way, I originally posted this in the Titanium folder, but someone mentioned that I might actually have a Aluminum PB.

hi joeuu,
I have 1.5GB mem: one 512 stick and one 1GB and I already tried the sticks one at a time: it hangs with the original 512, it hangs with the 1GB and it hangs with them together in both possible slot settings.

Now what can we read from this?
I see in here "AppleUSBTrackpad" and "AppleUSBOHCI".
Referring to my original post: I have seen an error (a few days ago, when working with applejack) that also mentioned USB.
I'm very afraid that this is a hardware issue. Reading through some other posts, I saw something about a ribbon that gave problems. What are your thoughts?

• PowerBook G4 hangs after install/reboot with Combo Mac OS X 10.5.8 update

I've got a Titanium PowerBook G4 1GHz. It had Mac OS X 10.5.4 installed.
Then I went to Software Update and it downloaded the Combo software 10.5.4 and after it rebooted, it is stuck at "Installing 2 items, Configuring installation."
You can see the progress bar pulsating but it's stuck and I dont hear any hard drive activity. I had to hard power down and got back in and did Software Update again and after it rebooted, same issue.
Whats up with that?

Some general advice on updating Leopard:
It is worth noting that it is an extreme rarity for updates to cause upsets to your system, as they have all been extensively beta-tested, but they may well reveal pre-existing ones, particularly those of which you may have been unaware. If you are actually aware of any glitches, make sure they are fixed before proceeding further.
So before you do anything else:
If you can, make a full backup first to an external hard disk. Ideally you should always have a bootable clone of your system that enables you to revert to the previous pre-update state.
Turn off sleep mode for both screen and hard disk.
Disconnect all peripherals except your keyboard and mouse.
1. Repair Permissions (in Disk Utility)
2. Verify the state of your hard disk using Disk Utility. If any faults are reported, restart from your install disk (holding down the C key), go to Disk Utility, and repair your startup disk. Restart again to get back to your startup disk.
At least you can now be reasonably certain that your system does not contain any obvious faults that might cause an update/upgrade to fail.
3. Download the correct version of the COMBO update from the Apple download site.
The Combo updater of Leopard 10.5.8 can be found here:
http://support.apple.com/downloads/Mac_OS_X_10_5_8_Combo_Update
If you prefer to download updates via Software Update in the Apple menu (which would ensure that the correct version for your Mac was being downloaded), it is not recommended to allow SU to install major (or even minor) updates automatically. Set Software Update to just download the updater without immediately installing it. There is always the possibility that the combined download and install (which can be a lengthy process) might be interrupted by a power outage or your cat walking across the keyboard, and an interrupted install will almost certainly cause havoc. Once it is downloaded, you can install at a time that suits you. You should make a backup copy of the updater on a CD in case you ever need a reinstall.
Full details about the 10.5.8 update here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3606
More information on using Software Updater here:
http://support.apple.com/kb/TA24901?viewlocale=en_US
Using the Combo updater ensures that all system files changed since the original 10.5.0 are included, and any that may have been missed out or subsequently damaged will be repaired. The Delta updater, although a temptingly smaller download, only takes you from the previous version to the new one, i.e. for example from 10.5.7 to 10.5.8. Software Update will generally download the Delta updater only. The preferable Combo updater needs to be downloaded from Apple's download site.
Now proceed as follows:
4. Close all applications and turn off energy saving and screensaver.
5. Unplug all peripherals except your keyboard and mouse.
6. Install the update/upgrade. Do not under any circumstances interrupt this procedure. Do not do anything else on your computer while it is installing. Be patient.
7. When it ask for a restart to complete the installation, click restart. This can take longer than normal, there are probably thousands of files to overwrite and place in the correct location. Do nothing while this is going on.
8. Once your Mac is awake, repair permissions again, and you should be good to go!
If your Mac seems slightly sluggish or ‘different’, perform a second restart. It can’t hurt and is sometimes efficacious! In fact a second restart can be recommended.
9. Open a few of your most used applications and check that all is OK. In this connection please remember that not all manufacturers of third party applications and plug-ins, add-ons, haxies etc, will have had time to do any necessary rewrites to their software to make them compliant with the latest version of your operating system. Give them a week or two while you regularly check their websites for updates.
N.B. Do not attempt to install two different updates at the same time as each may have different routines and requirements. Follow the above recommendations for each update in turn.
Lastly, Apple's own article on the subject of Software Update may also be useful reading:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106695
If you are updating Safari (or just have):
Input Managers from third parties can do as much harm as good. They use a security loophole to reach right into your applications' code and change that code as the application starts up.  If you have installed an OS update and Safari is crashing, the very first thing to do is clear out your InputManagers folders (both in your own Library and in the top-level /Library), log out and log back in, and try again.
So, disable all third party add-ons before updating Safari, as they may not have been updated yet for the new version. Add them back one by one. If something goes awry, remove it again and check on the software manufacturer's website for news of an update to match your version of Safari.
Most errors reported here after an update are due to an unrepaired or undetected inherent fault in the system, and/or a third party add-on.
Additional tips on software installation here:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106692
To reiterate, Input Managers reach right into an application and alter its code. This puts the behavior of the affected application outside the control and responsibility of its developers: a recipe for  problems. That's not to say that issues absolutely will ensue as a result of Input Managers, but you, as a user, must decide. If the functionality of a specific Input Manager or set thereof is really important to you, you may well choose to assume the associated risk.
Again, the advice is to remove all Input Managers from the following directories:
/Library/InputManagers
~/Library/InputManagers
especially prior to system updates (they can always be added back one-by-one later).

• Powerbook Pismo Hangs on Startup HELP!

I have a G3 pismo that hangs on startup, no matter what I've tried!
I have tried to reset the pmu. zap the pram, change out the hard drive with another one with OS 10.3.9, boot from an external hard drive with OS 10.3.9, and external cd drive with an OSX Panther install disk.
I get the "You need to restart your computer" message in the background, and what looks like a kernal panic message in the front.
The kernal is version 7.0.0.
At the bottom of the page it says "We are hanging here..."
Has anybody been through this? Am I missing something?

• Powerbook 12" Hangs on Grey Screen, No Spinning Pinwheel

I've scoured the net for an answer to this, but no luck so far. On startup I get the chime and the Powerbook looks like it is starting up, but there is no pinwheel and no progress. I've left it for 1/2 hour and it stayed on the grey screen.
The optical drive is acting funny as well- I could only boot from Diskwarrior (not Mac OSX 10.4 Install Disc), and when I did, the screen looked like a negative, with severe pixelation (it was not because of my Universal Access settings either).
I've tried unplugging and removing the battery overnight, resetting PRAM several times, attempting to start in Verbose/Single User/Safe modes (none of which work), running Diskwarrior 4.0, starting from other startup disks (no luck). There is a new HD installed and it is ok according to Diskwarrior. The machine will load in Target Disc mode and Open Firmware mode, but that's it.
I am at a loss, any suggestions? I'll try just about anything!

Do you have any other Mac?
you should try to boot them from this PB, using it like a start up volume in target mode, and check if other peripherals work, like combo drive, usb ports ecc ecc...
btw i think there's soemthing really wrong with your logic board..

• Safari PowerBook G4 hangs spinning pinwheel

Hi all,
I seem to get this same result consistently at the same web site.
Safari hangs spinning pinwheel forever,
Activity Monitor shows Safari "not responding."
Cannot Force Quit. Only way out is a hard reset.
Very simple install on this PG G4 mostly for web surfing.
Machine is acting well for all other uses.
Any suggestions?
I'm stumped on this.
So long for now, TOM

Hi Carolyn and any other interested listers,
Well it's been interesting trying to fix these issues. Many experiences of the past week are pointing to hardware issues.
I tried to back up my HD expecting the worst, but couldn't get through the process of Restoring (cloning) it to my external FW Disk using Disk Utility ( a task I've done forever without isses).
So I got out the original PBG4 Hardware  test and it failed during the "Memory Test." Next I removed the 1 GB RAM chip from the computer and re-ran the Hardware test twice with AOK results, so I am assuming the soldered on RAM is not the issue.
I was able to run the computer from a Disk Warrior CD, and thought it might boot without anything but the onboard RAM, but no go. It kernal panics without any additional RAM installed. Doesn't the Mac need at least 512 MB of RAM and that would explain it, or should it be booting. (Mac OS Leopard X.5.8 installed).
I guess I should get a replacement 1 GB Chip.
Could it be bad contacts. How does one clean the contacts on a RAM Chip.
Thanks in advance, and so long for now, TOM

• WebServer Hangs?  Or can't find on browser ...  PowerBook (PowerPC) Tiger

I have a PowerBook (PowerPC) and Tiger OS X. Recently developed tons of HTML but I can't seem to view in on a WebServer because it will not turn on. If I go to Systems -> Sharing, and try to turn on Web Services, that check box goes gray and it just says "starting." That's it. I tried re-installing Apache. I tried reading all the conf files but I can't figure it out.
I tried updating the Apache version, tried installing a newer package with the PHP, mySQL though it already comes with the older version but I think I made a mess of it. Really could need some assistance, please!!!

Just to add on to what Camelot said, usually Apache isn't really hanging when you start it with System Preferences. The System Preferences pane is waiting for Apache to signal that it's finished starting up, but what's really happened is that the Apache binary has crashed or exited with a configuration error, and the System Pref pane never gets the message. That's why it appears to hang, but if you close and open Sys Prefs, you'll see that it's no longer waiting to start.
Apache logs its errors in /var/log/httpd/error_log, and it's usually very helpful about telling you what happened. There are also helpful command line programs to get you information on why Apache won't start up. You can check your configuration like so:
<pre class="command">/usr/sbin/apachectl configtest</pre>
You can start the server like so:
<pre class="command">sudo /usr/sbin/apachectl start</pre>
Substitute stop for start to stop sharing, and use graceful instead of stop if all you want to do is to restart the server to make some configuration changes. graceful won't make your server unavailable like stopping and starting will.
These hints, though, all apply to the Apache 1.3 that's shipped with 10.4, and may not apply if you've replaced the stock Apache and PHP and other stuff...

• I/O error - Powerbook hangs at startup

My co-worker brought his powerbook G4 in to work today, said it wasnt booting up. When we tried it would hang on the spinning gear screen. The message we got when we booted into verbose mode was the I/O error.
We tried to run an Archive and Install with the original 10.3.3 disks that came with the machine but it complains the disk is corrupt (dont know if it means the hdd or the cd). When running disk utility from the disk it cant repair the permissions or the disk.
I'm officially out of ideas. We need to keep the files already on the hard drive - photos, etc. Any advice is appreciated...

My suggestion is that you startup your PowerBook in "Target Disk Mode" (hold down the "T" key on startup while connected to another Mac via FireWire), backup all your files to that Mac, or another external drive, and then...
1) Startup your PowerBook after all the backing up, with the restore disc
2) Completely erase and reformat your drive
3) After that's done, check the status of your drive
4) Since it's erased, you can't archive and install
5) Do a complete fresh install of the OS / Software
6) Restart, and see if that cleared it up
By the way, when you say "disk is corrupt" I can't tell you if that's your HD or the installation disc unless I saw the screen myself.

• Powerbook hanging on "Blue Screen of ????"

Ok, I've got a 12" Powerbook here that no longer boots up. It hangs on the blue screen right after the gray apple and before the login screen. I tried a complete re-install (Tiger) several times, each time using different security options like zeroing out the data on the drive, etc.. I've reset PRAM, NVRAM, tried different hard drives, booted off external drives, you name it, I've probably tried it, and it always does the same thing... it just hangs on the blue screen. The weird thing is I can boot into safe mode just fine. There are no start-up items or log-in items to delete under the user, I even tried creating a new admin user, then deleted the original, nothing worked. I am truly stuck, I've worked with Macs for years, this is the first time I have come across this particular problem, any suggestions would be appreciated!

Have you run the Apple hardware test, or either of the TechTools tests? Find your original OS X disks, which will say in small print on the first one's label 'AHT Version x.x'. Insert it and reboot holding the option key down. Choose the Apple hardware test, click the arrow to the right and follow directions. Choose the extended test when prompted. Does that give any error messages?

• Powerbook hangs randomly

In the past few days, my powerbook has been running more and more slowly. I'd like to be able to pin this down to when I installed the most recent updates for Safari, Quicktime and iTunes, but I can't.
In addition to that, after having been on and active for more than an hour any program that is running, including the finder starts to hang. When I try force quitting and relaunching, it freezes completely and I have to reboot manually, finding that it takes exponentially longer to reboot than it ever has before. Whenever these hangs start, I hear the harddrive doing what sounds like a read/write "loop" where it constantly does this following some kind of rhythm.
I've run Disk utility and found no disk errors or corrected any permissions errors. I've also cleaned the cache and so far haven't located any corrupted files. Anyone have any thoughts?
Powerbook G4 12" Mac OS X (10.3.9)
Powerbook G4 12"   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

I you're hearing hard drive noises, there is the possibilty that it is on it's way out. The first thing I would do is backup your data to an external firewire drive.
Have you repaired the hard drive as shown in Dr.Smokes repair thread?
Is S.M.A.R.T. status in disk utility failing?
Cheers!
