PowerBook G4 hangs after trying sleep mode

Hello
First at beginning: my Powerbook works since nearly 5 years without any problems (2 crashs in the first year) and I had never such a problem.
Yesterday I installed the Security patch 2006-006 (the actual) and today there was a problem (I don't know if this is connected with this patch but this was the only change).
I put a CD in the DVD-Rom. This disc was not correctly mounted. after some minutes I tried to get the disc out but all (including the output knob) fails.
After that I tried to set the Powerbook in sleep mode but then it shows onlyy a black screen and only a reset let him live again. After rebooting the CD was possible to mount. The system.log shows following lines around the event:
Oct 19 07:28:12 localhost set-hostname[424]: setting hostname to voyager.
Oct 19 07:40:21 localhost kernel: IOATAController device blocking bus.
Oct 19 07:40:34 localhost last message repeated 2 times
Oct 19 07:42:10 localhost last message repeated 3 times
Oct 19 07:42:42 localhost mDNSResponder[171]: mDNSResponder Sleeping at 1337777
Oct 19 07:42:43 localhost kernel: AppleNMI mask NMI
Jan 1 01:00:12 localhost syslogd: restart
after rebooting there is a message that teh CD was mounted correctly but there is nothing at the time the CD was inside the slot the first time:
Oct 19 07:47:11 localhost diskarbitrationd[90]: disk1s0 cd9660 00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000 RoPa'sMP36 /Volumes/RoPa'sMP36
I hope anyone can tell me what thiss failure means and how to prevent (or, if it comes with the new update, to correct this ...)
Best regards, Lefti

Hi eSPee,
I tried to boot from the install disk several times already but just now once more: Held down the option key, chose the hardware test -> quick test and..system hangs after completion of the test
Have you tried running Repair Disk yet? Repair Disk: Boot from install disc (insert disc>restart>immediately hold down c key and keep holding it until you see “Preparing Installation”)>at first screen go to Installer Menu>open Disk Utility>select your HD in the panel on the left side>click Repair Disk at bottom of main window. Run this at least twice, and keep running it until it says “appears ok” twice in a row. If that doesn’t happen, you may need a stronger utility such as DiskWarrior or if the directory is damaged beyond repair, you may need to reinstall the OS, or you may have a damaged HD (repair utilities can only repair the directory structure, not the HD itself).

My ipod cclassic 80gb is hang after trying dat press and hold method then also its not working please tell me solution

Thanks for your response and good luck wishes, I suspect I will need them!
In principle, I agree re: the manufacturer's warranty. However, I am pretty upset that this is now my second iPod to develop a critical fault within weeks of the warranty expiring, and frankly, it is not unreasonable to expect a state-of-the-art $500 electronic device to last well beyond one year of life.
I agree talking to Apple is not likely to do me any good (the clue is in how impossible they make it to talk to them in the first place) - but that is not necessarily OK. I expect I will have to pay money to get the battery replaced - again, not OK (full stop - but especially given the cost of the device and the money I have spent with Apple). Yes, the batteries have a limited lifespan, but it should last longer than this (and surely, I should notice a gradual decline in its functionality, not an instant stop).
I will try Deggie's suggestion (see my reply post), but probably won't hold my breath (think I have already done this). I probably will have to get the new battery - and probably under my own steam. It is a principle at stake and I feel I should be able to let Apple know how I'm feeling - and am frustrated that they make this virtually impossible. It sends the very clear message that they are not interested in listening to their customers.

• E550 will not come back after hibernation/sleeping mode

Thinkpad E550 will not come back after hibernation/sleeping mode. please help. I just bought this garbage laptop about 1 month ago. the big issue is the laptop will not come back after sleeping. I often run some calculation for some hours, the laptop always goes sleeping and wont come back. I had to power off the laptop and re-started it again. All of my calculation results  were gone. Lenovo support is very bad, I already submitted a service ticket 2 weeks ago, but nobody contacted me. Lenovo laptops are garbage. I will not buy it anymore. Anyone can help? thanks a lot!

HI Clare,
In the Toshiba Power Management utility you should click on the 'advanced' tab and about half way down the resultant window you should see an option for the action to be taken when you close the lid of your SA30.
Make sure that this is set to 'hibernate'. Then go to the power save modes and click on the 'details' tab and then the 'Power Save Mode' tab and make sure that the 'Hibernate' option is set to 'never'.
With these settings your notebook should go into 'hibernate' when you close the lid but not at any other time.
Note that you can set the notebook to hibernate when running on battery when the bttery capacity reaches a pre-set value of your own choosing.

• PowerBook G4 hangs after install/reboot with Combo Mac OS X 10.5.8 update

I've got a Titanium PowerBook G4 1GHz. It had Mac OS X 10.5.4 installed.
Then I went to Software Update and it downloaded the Combo software 10.5.4 and after it rebooted, it is stuck at "Installing 2 items, Configuring installation."
You can see the progress bar pulsating but it's stuck and I dont hear any hard drive activity. I had to hard power down and got back in and did Software Update again and after it rebooted, same issue.
Whats up with that?

Some general advice on updating Leopard:
It is worth noting that it is an extreme rarity for updates to cause upsets to your system, as they have all been extensively beta-tested, but they may well reveal pre-existing ones, particularly those of which you may have been unaware. If you are actually aware of any glitches, make sure they are fixed before proceeding further.
So before you do anything else:
If you can, make a full backup first to an external hard disk. Ideally you should always have a bootable clone of your system that enables you to revert to the previous pre-update state.
Turn off sleep mode for both screen and hard disk.
Disconnect all peripherals except your keyboard and mouse.
1. Repair Permissions (in Disk Utility)
2. Verify the state of your hard disk using Disk Utility. If any faults are reported, restart from your install disk (holding down the C key), go to Disk Utility, and repair your startup disk. Restart again to get back to your startup disk.
At least you can now be reasonably certain that your system does not contain any obvious faults that might cause an update/upgrade to fail.
3. Download the correct version of the COMBO update from the Apple download site.
The Combo updater of Leopard 10.5.8 can be found here:
http://support.apple.com/downloads/Mac_OS_X_10_5_8_Combo_Update
If you prefer to download updates via Software Update in the Apple menu (which would ensure that the correct version for your Mac was being downloaded), it is not recommended to allow SU to install major (or even minor) updates automatically. Set Software Update to just download the updater without immediately installing it. There is always the possibility that the combined download and install (which can be a lengthy process) might be interrupted by a power outage or your cat walking across the keyboard, and an interrupted install will almost certainly cause havoc. Once it is downloaded, you can install at a time that suits you. You should make a backup copy of the updater on a CD in case you ever need a reinstall.
Full details about the 10.5.8 update here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3606
More information on using Software Updater here:
http://support.apple.com/kb/TA24901?viewlocale=en_US
Using the Combo updater ensures that all system files changed since the original 10.5.0 are included, and any that may have been missed out or subsequently damaged will be repaired. The Delta updater, although a temptingly smaller download, only takes you from the previous version to the new one, i.e. for example from 10.5.7 to 10.5.8. Software Update will generally download the Delta updater only. The preferable Combo updater needs to be downloaded from Apple's download site.
Now proceed as follows:
4. Close all applications and turn off energy saving and screensaver.
5. Unplug all peripherals except your keyboard and mouse.
6. Install the update/upgrade. Do not under any circumstances interrupt this procedure. Do not do anything else on your computer while it is installing. Be patient.
7. When it ask for a restart to complete the installation, click restart. This can take longer than normal, there are probably thousands of files to overwrite and place in the correct location. Do nothing while this is going on.
8. Once your Mac is awake, repair permissions again, and you should be good to go!
If your Mac seems slightly sluggish or ‘different’, perform a second restart. It can’t hurt and is sometimes efficacious! In fact a second restart can be recommended.
9. Open a few of your most used applications and check that all is OK. In this connection please remember that not all manufacturers of third party applications and plug-ins, add-ons, haxies etc, will have had time to do any necessary rewrites to their software to make them compliant with the latest version of your operating system. Give them a week or two while you regularly check their websites for updates.
N.B. Do not attempt to install two different updates at the same time as each may have different routines and requirements. Follow the above recommendations for each update in turn.
Lastly, Apple's own article on the subject of Software Update may also be useful reading:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106695
If you are updating Safari (or just have):
Input Managers from third parties can do as much harm as good. They use a security loophole to reach right into your applications' code and change that code as the application starts up.  If you have installed an OS update and Safari is crashing, the very first thing to do is clear out your InputManagers folders (both in your own Library and in the top-level /Library), log out and log back in, and try again.
So, disable all third party add-ons before updating Safari, as they may not have been updated yet for the new version. Add them back one by one. If something goes awry, remove it again and check on the software manufacturer's website for news of an update to match your version of Safari.
Most errors reported here after an update are due to an unrepaired or undetected inherent fault in the system, and/or a third party add-on.
Additional tips on software installation here:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106692
To reiterate, Input Managers reach right into an application and alter its code. This puts the behavior of the affected application outside the control and responsibility of its developers: a recipe for  problems. That's not to say that issues absolutely will ensue as a result of Input Managers, but you, as a user, must decide. If the functionality of a specific Input Manager or set thereof is really important to you, you may well choose to assume the associated risk.
Again, the advice is to remove all Input Managers from the following directories:
/Library/InputManagers
~/Library/InputManagers
especially prior to system updates (they can always be added back one-by-one later).

• Why does my Power Mac G5 use 5 times as much power after entering Sleep mode automatically as when I put it to sleep manually?

My Power Mac G5 (4 x 2.5 GHz PowerPC G5) with an Apple 17" CRT monitor, an HP LaserJet 1200 Printer and an HP4570c scanner draws approximately 200 Watts of electrical power after entering the "Sleep" mode automatically, but only 41 Watts of electrical power if I put it to sleep manually.
I have tried changing the Energy Saver preferences in every way that I can think of, with no effect.
What am I doing wrong?

Hmm, 159 Watt diff, that's interesting, can't picture Hard Drives using that much, can you disconnect one devie at a time to test it's not them?

• Macbook Pro trackpad and keyboard freezes after attempting sleep mode

I bought this computer on April 2008. It has the latest OS X 10.5.6 and it did not accept the trackpad firmware. I tried to install and the software said "this computer does not need this update".
This has been happening a lot when I am using Skype while talking to someone with video and sound. The computer tries to go on sleep mode because I am not typing or touching it - it thinks I am away because I am just talking and watching the person on the other side.
I touch the computer to avoid getting on sleep mode and with that it freezes the trackpad and keyboard. I continue to listen and see the other person and they continue to see me and hear me, but I cannot move the "mouse" cursor on the screen or type anything. Neither can I force to quit anything. The only thing that works is to close the computer and open again, that forces the computer to go into sleep mode then I can make it wake up again by opening it and touching any key on the keyboard.
This have been interrupting Skype calls and a study I am conduting. I have to keep touching the computer trackpad to not let it sleep ever. I am concerned is something with the battery or maybe it needs some kind of firmware.
This is very recent, just started happening this week (March 2009). I have not added any new software or any hardware to the machine.
What can I do to make the trackpad and keyboard stop freezing when the computer tries to sleep?

this is in the wrong category. I added a new message to the right category: MacBook Pro but I don't know how to delete it from here.

• Powerbook G4 hangs after few minutes of usage

Since February 06 I have a PB G4: 1.67GHZ, model Powerbook5,8
Since this weekend it hangs after a few minutes of usage.
I tried a whole load of possible solutions, like resetting the RAM, removing the battery and holding the powerbutton for 5 seconds...I even held it once for half a minute, but that didn't help. Checking the harddrive with disk utility (tried it often, but only once did the PB work long enough to get the end result: hard drive is healthy).
Often, when it hangs, I can get it to work by simply turning it off and on again. That gives me another window of 2 minutes of usage! Handy throughout the day when I need a file, or a document: I simply boot the machine, get the file and shut it down.
Carbon copy to an external HD does not work: the system hangs a few minutes after copying.
I installed a utility named applejack, and the first time I tried it, I got an interesting error: there were errors with the USB controller or USB bus, and system hangs. I didn't make a screenshot so this is out of the top of my head.
This was interesting because when I tried to make a HD copy (and believe me: I tried lots and lots of times), the system freezes first, and then an error about not unmounting a device popped into the screen. As if the touchpad, keyboards, and all other i/o devices stop working, and the system goes on for a few seconds more.
Sometimes the system just hangs, sometimes I get that black kernel panic screen.
Just before writing this, I tried the hardware test on the install CD once more:
Held down the option key, chose the hardware test -> quick test and..
system hangs after completion of the test
A message appeared in the bottom-left corner. Several lines of information, starting with:
"ERROR, Write to location ZERO detected!!, Loc zero was originally zero
Current File: Localization/en/Scripts/enAHTscript.sc"
etc
I live on a nice island in the Caribbean, so popping into the nearest Apple store means getting on a flight to Miami first.
What -if any- are my options? Is there something I can try to do myself before shipping it to Apple? Opening the case, checking this or that?
By the way, I originally posted this in the Titanium folder, but someone mentioned that I might actually have a Aluminum PB.

I see in here "AppleUSBTrackpad" and "AppleUSBOHCI".
Referring to my original post: I have seen an error (a few days ago, when working with applejack) that also mentioned USB.
I'm very afraid that this is a hardware issue. Reading through some other posts, I saw something about a ribbon that gave problems. What are your thoughts?

• Problem with the "now playing"-function after timer sleep-mode

At first: sorry for my english.
I have the following problem with the Nano 6G: I set the timer of my iPod Nano to shut it down after a while of playing. When I turn it back on afterwards, the now-playing-button does not show the song that it played at last. Instead of that the nano is automatically set to shuffle mode which was not activated before and the now-playing-button will show any other song randomly.
This does not happen when I switch it to sleep-mode with the button on the top, only when the sleepmode ist activated by the timer.
Does anyone notice the same issue with his nano? How can I bring my nano to play the same song after the sleepmode, that it played before?

Hey Ipaqman, that strange behavior of the Nano 6G annoys me for exactly the same reason: audiobook in bed + sleeptimer = losing the place. As You say, the 5G works better with that and I also hope that Apple takes notice of that issue and will solve it.
Until that I got myself a "workaround". I create a new playlist on the device, with just the single audiobook in it, that is actually in use. This helps me finding back into it, as long as "now playing" will not work correctly with the sleeptimer.

• Computer enters sleep mode shortly after leaving sleep mode. Defect?

I have a problem. It's not a serious problem, but since it seems to be hardware related it might cause problem in the future.
It's pretty simple. Let's say I fold the computer screen down and leave the computer in sleep mode. If I then fold it up again it will automatically enter sleep mode once again 25-30 seconds after waking up. It doesn't matter what I do. I can be completely passive or open any app and move the cursor as much as I like. After roughly 30 seconds the screen turns black and I have to press a key to wake it up.
It never enters sleep mode any other time if I don't choose so, it's always after being in sleep mode already. And it happens 80-90% of the time, but I have not noticed a pattern for when it doesn't.
Naturally my settings are in order. I just updated it today and no difference after one attempt with the new OS version.
Any ideas?

Sleep.
Shutting down a Mac is never required. It is best to let it sleep, unless you are planning to not use it for a period of time considerably longer than a few days.

The only thing that works is to close the computer and open again, that forces the computer to go into sleep mode then I can make it wake up again by opening it and touching any key on the keyboard. I am concerned is something with the battery or maybe it needs some kind of firmware. I am also concerned that if I never let it sleep it will shorten the battery's life span.
This is very recent, just started happening this week (beginning of March 2009). I have not added any new software or any hardware to the machine.
What can I do to make the trackpad and keyboard stop freezing when the computer tries to sleep?

"...No, I haven't. I am assuming it will take too long, they might not have the answer, and I don't have the time for a long phone call now.
The Apple store in Arlington is always too busy and you I waited over an hour to be helped a few times before."
1. The phone call will at the very least get you a case number and they can advise you if this is a current issue.
2. Making an appointment with the genius will at the very least cut down your wait time.

• Firefox 14.0.1 tabs not responding after active sleep mode in the new OS X Mountain Lion.

Further to installing OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion, the tabs on Firefox become unresponsive if I try clicking on them further to my Macbook Pro going into energy saving (sleep) mode.

Search these forums. There are hundreds of posts for the same thing. There was apparently a bad batch of 330M cards that Apple used.
Also, you have no third-party extensions interfering. Therefore, it is more than likely a hardware problem and not a software problem.
And, this is a nice little clue:

• Re: powerbook wont come back from sleep mode

I have the same problem. PB G4, 1.5 GHz, bought in '04. When I put it to sleep by closing screen or manually it will not wake up. I have rest PRAM and PMU. Still nothing. Also, it was shut-down unexpectedly a few times and wouldn't restart unless I reset the PMU. I don't have anything but power cable plugged in (I think the cable and battery are ok). Any suggestions?

Hmm... very interesting. Mine has been doing this as well and just recently. I thought it might have to do with me using the PCMCIA slot. That was the newest thing I've done when I noticed that when it goes to sleep, I can't wake it up unless I force it to shut down (hold the power button down) and then restart again.
It may be something else. Like an Apple Software Update. That's my only deduction, but I don't know which one. Unfortunately, I don't log what and when I update. But I am one of those who updates frequently and doesn't wait to hear what others' experiences are before I let the update run.
It is annoying. Thankfully, not happening when I have left important work on in the background. I am going to shut off the "sleep mode" in energy saver so as not to risk losing work.
So I, like you, will wait to see what other people say.
Mine is a "new" PowerBook from eBay and it wasn't exhibiting those signs before. Just recently, like last week. (When I started using the cardbus slot with a USB 2.0 card, so I could have more slots available on the left side... yes, I know the PowerBook already comes with USB 2.0). Model A1106 at 1.5GHz.

• No response after entering sleep mode

Whenever i leave My Yoga 11s on sleep mode(lid closed) it wont turn on the power button does nothing , its a full battery and it wont work until i plug it back in .
I looked online but found no answer plz help
Im a MS rep and i got this from Microsoft

hi 2pacalypsenow,
Welcome to the Forums.
This is a usual behavior of the Yoga 11s. When you try to wake the computer from sleep, do you have a light on the power button (i.e. solid/blinking light) ?
- if the unit is in sleep mode, it should have a flashing power light (S3 state)
- if hybrid sleep is enabled, the power button should be blinking and after a couple of mins., the light should turn off (S4 state)
Also, are you able to re-create the issue if you put the unit to sleep in Safe mode? When you successfully wake the computer up (by plugging in the AC adapter), do you get any errors on the Event Viewer?
Let me know your findings

• Deleted mail accounts after entering sleep mode

Tried this with on line support with limited success. New experience, a problem with my Mac. Upgraded to 10.6 and then update to 6.1 without issue until Wed (9/16). I had two accounts in mail, one connected to hosted exchange, the other to Zimbra server. Both have functioned without incident until I placed the MB in sleep mode. Returned to find both accounts had been deleted and the addressbook synch for Zimbra server was also gone. Strangely the calendar synch for both still seems to work which I assume is related to CalDav. Mail wil not let me add new accounts. In addition the search feature in Finder no longer functions.
At the suggestion of Apple support I set up a Guest log-in account and found that I could create new account and synch to Zimbra again works.
No idea what step to take next.

I think only the com.apple.mail.plist file was damaged, and not the account folders in Home/Library/Mail. This probably happened when you closed the lid to put it to sleep before Mail had completed its housekeeping tasks.
More info, please.

• PowerBook won't wake from sleep mode

My PowerBook G4 won't wake from sleep mode. I open the lid and nothing happens. I hold down the power button and nothing happens. I resetted the PMU and it will wake up and I am able to login and then it goes back to sleep mode. What should I do please help? And if my computer is dead, is there any way to retrieve my information saved on the hard drive?

this would happen to me when my battery was dead. you test the battery life? (little button on bottom near battery)
I'd make sure it was plugged in and let it charge for 10 minutes or so. then try restarting it if it doesnt wake up by itself.

You waited in line, you helped Apple by beta testing, now they would like to thank you by giving the people who didn't beta test or wait in line etc a $200 discount. This is a very bad business practice and I feel will do much harm to Apple's image.
