Powerbook G4 Hibernate problem

Computer will not come out of hibernate when I press a key or the power on button. I have to remove the battery and press the power button before I can restart the computer. Does anyone have a similar problem??

yeah, i was thinking that might be the case.
just did a test with some old(still good, just 512mb) memory and no go.
seems the logic board/memory slot is the culprit. the computer has been acting wonky for the past couple of months(no waking from sleep, randomly shutting down) so i think it has been giving us signs it was on it's way out.
too, bad. this puppy was my first mac. i guess it will just have to go to the farm now.
thanks for your help. cheers!

  • G4 Powerbook Hard Drive Problem - PLEASE HELP!!

    I have a powerbook G4 15 inch alu. It is running OSX version 10.4.11
    My system profiler tells me I have a 74.5GB hard drive with 69.34GB used, but I had wiped the HD in September 2008 and reinstalled the OS and few other programmes and files, so this shouldn't be the case at all.
    I have found that my the problem is with my Users folder - within Users, my user account (the main account, I have another account setup so my mum can use her iPhone) has 67GB used. But when I go into my user account (clicking through the icons, after double-clicking the MacintoshHD desktop icon), none of the folders within my account run to anwhere near 67GB. Totalled, they come to around 10-15GB at most. There's a good 50GB or so of hard drive that just seems to be missing.
    I ran Drive Genius to repair permissions and that eliminated a couple of GB of this 'missing space' but no more than that. How can I go about finding and reaccessing my lost hard drive space?
    FWIW - I reinstalled the OS in September because this was my University laptop and the result of 4-5 years use had resulted in loads of unwanted files. I saved the important stuff to discs and then reinstalled because it was much easier (I thought) than trying to find and get rid of all the unwanted stuff.
    Please please help. At the moment, the computer is running fine if a little sluggishly (understandable given how much of the hard drive is 'used'), but I had a nasty experience earlier this year with my G5's hard drive crapping ut and really don't want to end up in the same boat with this one. I also need that extra space back so I can use some programmes I can't install or work with as things stand.
    Many thanks for taking the time to read this and respond, I don't know enough about computers to have any clue as to how to proceed, so your help in this matter would be greatly appreciated.

    eww - will do and report back.
    cornelius - apologies for the ambiguity there. Hope this clears things up a bit:
    Users folder = get info says 69.34GB used
    Double-click on the Users folder and I get three folders - the shared folder, my mum's account folder, and my account folder. My account is the main/master account.
    The shared folder is empty. My mum's account folder has a couple GB used, mine has 66.5GB used.
    I double-click on my account folder, and get icons/folders for Desktop, Library, Movies, etc (the usual stuff). When I do Get Info for each of these, the sum of GB used by them is about 10-15GB, nowhere near the 66GB supposedly used.
    If it helps any, the File System is Journalled HFS+
    S.M.A.R.T. status is verified, and Drive Genius, Disk Warrior, and Disk Utility aren't picking up anything bad other than the corrupted permissions I repaired prior to making this post. Repairing permissions only freed up a few GB more space, still got 50 missing GB to locate and free up. Or start saving for a replacement HD, but if this is a sign of a crash, I'd rather know now so I can plan for that.
    Many thanks to both of you for responding so quickly - hopefully this problem is solvable.
    It doesn't make sense, there's nothing else which could have used those 'missing' GB. And, as I only reinstalled everything in September I know there's no way the few programmes I've added and 10 or so CDs I've copied onto the G4 could account for the missing 50GB. My HD should have most of its space free - minus the space used by OSX, any OSX updates, and literally a handful of small apps and files.

  • PowerBook G4 finder problem after 10.4.6 update

    Anybody know a fix for this, or have this same problem? After update, when I open a new window in the finder and go to click on app or file, window disappears followed by the finder resetting the desktop.

  • PowerBook G4 display problems

    A friend f mine wants me to fix her powerbook screen for her, problem is, I don't know if it is the screen itself, or the graphics card (maybe even the inverter, but most likely not). The symptom is the bottom third of the screen is solid whit, or solid black, if you press the screen/near the screen just right, it goes back to normal (which makes me think it is the screen). Anybody have a diagnoses?

    You may have better luck posting in the appropriate PowerBook forum.
    It is not to say you won't find help here but this forum is dedicated to displays as connected to a Power mac G5.

  • Powerbook 3400 display problem.

    Everything was fine yesterday. But today, the 3400 had a new problem. The display has raised up (half an inch) and I can no longer see the top menu bar. The bottom half inch is black.
    So far, I have tried the following:
    Checked the appearance control panel to make sure a picture is not covering anything.
    Checked display settings.
    Enabled 9.1 base extension set.
    Trashed any preference files that were modified between yesterday and today.
    Zapped the pram and rebuilt the desktop.
    Ran First aid from start up CD.
    None of that helped, so I performed a clean install back to OS 9.04. and the problem still remained. Next, I opened the unit up and removed the keyboard. Then, removed the brightness and speaker grill and reseated the ribbon connections and pressed down firmly. All to no avail,
    so I initialized the drive and again did a clean install, but that did not work either.
    This forum has saved the 3400 in the past, and hopefully it can save it again. As always, any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

  • Powerbook 160 Display Problems...!

    Alright, here's the Deal:
    I have a Powerbook 160 I just bought from a Yard sale, and one off of eBay. Yes, it's another couple of powerbooks! Just last summer I bought a 180 with a dead drive which I regret throwing out. It turns out that the one from the yard sale was having problems with the screen, and every few seconds I need to adjust the contrast to see the screen better. after about 5 minutes, it goes wild and just keeps getting brighter and darker. That's why I bought the other one from eBay.
    It belonged to some dude in Oregon, and seemed to have gotten upgraded sometime around 1995-1996. I could tell because when I opened it up, it had a 240MB hard drive with a 1994 copyright on it. Later investigation showed a 1995 copyright on the 8MB ram chip that was attached. The one from the yard sale belonged to a Math teacher at a high school in a neighbouring town. It was kept pretty simple, and had a 65.8MB hard drive with Clarisworks and stuff on it. I decided the best thing to do was to fuse them together to make a working one. Really all I did was replace the keyboard, mouse, and display with those from the yard sale laptop. This was because the display in the one form eBay ws messed up, the kayboard was sticky and the bottom button on the trackball mouse didn't work. But the screen problems remained.
    I did a little more investigation, and found it to be the blue-colored brightness and contrast controller chip inside. This was really the main reason for fusing them together.
    If anyone has any information on how to acquire another one of these (not used), it would be of great help. I plan on using this laptop for word processing among other things such as either setting it up as a terminal or perhaps updating my internet blog with it. Please help!

    UPDATE
    The flat wire between the screen and the logic board just ripped. I'm gonna need one of those too.

  • Powerbook G$ display problems

    Hi all
    I'm actuallu posting this on behalf of someone. They have a powerbook g4 and the display keeps going black. It isn't a sleep issue as i've checked all the settings and they're ok. The screen only goes back to normal after pressing return a couple of times. It might be a connection problem. Any ideas?

  • Powerbook 520c Screen problem.

    Hi, I am turning an old Powerbook 520c into a digital picture frame.
    The screen has a problem where the bottom half is still visible, but covered in verticle RGB lines. They go BGR, BGR, BGR, BGR, etc.
    Heres a picture: http://conorkirkpatrick.com/images/macos8.JPG
    I have another fully working PB520c that I can scrap for parts.
    Another question: What was the earliest version of Mac OS that came with Speakable items and will this computer run it? A voice activated picture frame sounds cool :P

    you can download system 7.5.3 from Apple. It comes in 17 parts, so do I need 17 floppies?
    The North American English download (link above) consists of nineteen files. The same is true for the British English version (here). Twenty files for the International English version (here).
    French and German versions come as seventeen files. However, speech recognition is probably limited to English. In dubio, try the North American English system software first.
    Each downloadable file is small enough to (just) fit onto a 1.44 MB diskette. Please note that you are supposed to transfer the files to the hard disk of the PowerBook 520c. You could use separate floppies, or erase one disk over and over again.
    Some reports seem to indicate that less space than normal could be available on disks originating from USB floppy drives connected to Mac OS X computers. If this is a real problem, you could alternatively use a PC for the download (and PC-formatted floppies for the transfers). In this case it is important not to decode the MacBinary (.bin) until on the PB 520c.
    Use StuffIt Expander to decode the .bin (on the PB 520c). Place ALL the decoded files (one .smi and eighteen .part for the North American English download) in one common folder. Please note that the hard disk has to be formatted HFS (Standard) for System 7.5.3, not HFS+ (Extended).
    It is wise to have a startup floppy (the Network Access Disk 7.5 here). You can create this disk in Disk Copy 4.2 (the Make A Copy button) on the PB 520c before installing a new system.
    Start from the Network Access floppy. Double-click on the first (.smi) file to mount the total disk image. The installer will be found in the mounted image. See steps 7 and 8 in this document for information about how to perform a clean installation (it is not necessary to update to 7.5.5). Neither Disk Copy nor any other disk image utility is used with the System 7.5.3 files.

  • PowerBook G4 StartUp Problem

    I have a PowerBook G4 titanium (year 2001) running 10.4.4 and have had no prior problems running any version of OS-X. I have been running 10.4.4 for several weeks. I use VersionTracker to keep all my software current. I turned on my PowerBook and after a long while got a deep blue screen that read something like, "You need to turn off your computer by holdin the power button...". It was in four languages. I did that, but it didn't help and the screen reappeared repeatedly. I then executed a Safe Boot by holding the shift key during start up, and booted successfully. I executed a permissions repair and also conduicted a disk verify (which was successful). I then tried to re-start normally and once again got the same screen ("You need to turn off your computer....."). Since this machine can boot from OS-9 and I had a partition for just OS-9, I did that successfully, so it isn't a catastrophe, but I am trying to figure out what the heck to do. If anyone has any advice please let me know. I have solid bootable backups that go back about a week and could go back to that and reinstall on the drive, but I'd like to fix what I have if possible. I have not as yet run TechTool Pro 10 as I am away from home but could verify volume structure (file structure is okay).
    Thanks,
    Barry

    What you experienced is known as a kernel panic. This FAQ explains kernel panics:
    http://www.macmaps.com/kernelpanic.html
    You mentioned you have Techtool Pro, but didn't mention if it is version 4.0.4 or later. If it is version 4.0.3 or earlier, having used it once on a Tiger system may be the cause of your kernel panics. Only Alsoft Disk Warrior 3.0.3 may be able to repair the damage done by that. If you are able to, I'd make your backup as current as possible while booted into Mac OS 9 before using any utilities. Once that is done, determine if the cause of the kernel panic is third party hardware or drivers since it appears not to be directory related per se since your Verify Disk yielded no errors.
    Disclaimer: Reference to links I make to my Macmaps.com website are a for your information only type reference. I do not get any profit from this page, and it is open to the public.

  • Powerbook G4 video problem

    Hi there i have a costumer´s Powerbook G4 with this problem
    The issue is on the mainboard, flex, LCD, video card?
    Regards

    The issue is on the mainboard, flex, LCD, video card?
    There is no separate video card--it's integral with the logic board--so that cuts the suspects to three. These checks may help narrow the issue:
    1) Move the display on its hinge. Watch the image; if it changes during flexing, its the cable.
    2) Connect an external monitor (you'll need a DVI-capable monitor or an Apple DVI-to-something else adaptor). A proper image on the external means the video hardware on the logic board is OK and the problem is in the display (including the inverter), or the cabling.

  • Hibernate Problem...

    Hi people...
    I have implemented an application which it parses an rss online and then it saves it into oracle DB through Hibernate. I am facind a problem which i cannot explain. In the first time the user is entering the rss url to a jsp then the rss is parsed the wanted values are saved into the DB and then displayed back through a jsp again. With not ending the application and going back to re-enter a new url the application throughs an exception before commiting the transaction at the Hibernate part.
    The code to the hibernate has as follows...
          try
            System.out.println("in the beggining");
            session = sf.openSession();
            trans = session.beginTransaction();
              System.out.println("in the middle");
            Rss rcv = new Rss();
            Item riv = new Item();
             riv.setRss(rcv);
            System.out.println("be4 saving");
                session.save(rcv);
              System.out.println("saved rcv");
                session.save(riv);
              System.out.println("saved riv");
              System.out.println("The trans is :    "+trans.wasCommitted());
              session.update(riv);
                trans.commit();
              System.out.println("after commit");
              System.out.println("THE SESSION: "+session.isOpen());
            session.close();
            System.out.println("THE SESSION: "+session.isOpen());
          catch(Exception exc)
            try{if(trans != null) trans.rollback();}catch(HibernateException h){System.out.println("MMMPPPOOOXXXAAA   "+ h);}
            exc.printStackTrace();
          }I debug and i came to the above conclution, failing at commit. I cant explain why because it works in the beggining. I also find out that if i dont redirect for displaying the results i can re-enter values into the DB without the exception occuring. The exception is the following...

  • G4 PowerBook start up problem

    Weird problem here - with a friend's 15" PowerBook G4.
    Once turned off, it takes many start up trials before the machine will finally boot to the desktop again - sometimes up to 20 tries!
    Pushing the power button will get no start up chime/sound & black screen - so the only indicator that the machine is actually running, will be the faint humming of the hd spin - or hitting the Caps Lock key to see the light come on.
    Running Disk Utility from an external drive found no problems - TechTook Pro came up with 1 bad black in the Surface Scan.
    Can one bad block cause this issue, or is there something more substantial ?
    Hardware Test maybe ?

    With a bad block in the surface scan, I'd backup as much information as possible first*:
    http://www.macmaps.com/backup.html
    You may be having a dying hard drive, or simply a bad directory because of an improper shutdown.
    If the machine's clock battery hasn't been replaced in 4 years, it may be time to replace it. If issues persist after replacing it, check resetting the power manager, and then resetting the pram. If none of that appears to help, you can try the hardware test, but if that doesn't show anything I'd take it in to Apple, or if out of AppleCare one of these repair places:

  • T61p, Vista and hibernate problems

    There are some other threads on the issue, but I didn't see anyone with the exact same problem.
    The basics; T61p (6457-5gg) with Windows Vista Ultimate. Latest BIOS and drivers.
    - The sleep-function in Vista ain't possible to use at all.
    - When i choose to hibernate, the systems goes into hibernation, and then wakes up again. I put the system into hibernation and put the pc in my bag. Took it up a couple of hours later and it was extremly hot. It was really uncomfortable to touch the system. Battery had been completly drained.
    - BIOS-settings should be ok. The option for waking to do scheduled tasks is disabled.
    Suggestions? I was thinking about a complete reinstall of the system to see what happens then, but I was hoping for a 2 minute fix instead of a days work :-|
    * W520 4284-49G (Upgrades: 256GB Corsair Performance Pro & 256GB OCZ Octane) * T61p (Upgrades: 128GB OCZ Vertex, Wi-Fi Link 6300)

    Hi,
    I am having the same issue on my T60 on Windows XP.
    I have had major issues with Standby and Hibernation from the beginning (less with Hibernation, so I use that more), but I have had weird issues where hibernating the system while plugged into AC power and waking it up while on battery will cause all kinds of issues to the point where the system will nearly freeze and cannot be shut down normally (this I can reproduce any time).
    A friend told me there was a BIOS update that had been released recently - guess what: Since I installed that, I am getting freezes after a fresh reboot within minutes - my external USB mouse will stop working first, then the Start menu button and the content will start losing text (only the icons will show), and at some point it will no longer do anything.
    But today all of a sudden out of the blue after showing these signs, I get the mentioned blue screen:
    0x000000A0
    Internal_power_error
    (0x00000101, 0x00000007, 0xBA50507420, 0x00000000)
    There appears to be a hotfix for Vista that you can request from Microsoft, but nothing for XP.
    I would really like Lenovo to look into this as I am fairly certain there is something in their power management drivers and software that is causing this.
    Does anyone have a paid support plan with Lenovo and can ask them about this?

  • Powerbook start up problems....AGAIN

    hi!
    about a month back i had start up issues w/my 17" g4 powerbook. i had to have the whole computer wipped out and and have programs re-installed.
    thought everything was all fine...UNTIL...this afternoon i tried to open an email, stepped away and when i came back there was all this type all over my screen saying system failure!!
    as of this moment i'm doing a fsn single user start-up. does anyone know why this happening? i've had my pb for 2 yrs and i've had my g4tower for YEARS and nothing has ever happened like this!
    thanx!
    -s

    Hey I actually had the same problem with my old 15in PB G4. I had a kernel panic after a few years of fluid operation, then suddenly, I began having startup problems. I couldn't even get to the log in screen so after a fresh install of Tiger, it seemed to work. I came to realize that my logic board has fried beyond belief, well it seems a lot of 15in PB users are having the same problem. My lower RAM slot had failed and I was unfortunately out of warranty. My best guess is to either send it in if you have AppleCare or are still under warranty. If not, check your system through "About this Mac" and see if you have all your RAM being recognized. I believe it has something to do with the logic board. A costly repair but hopefully it isn't. Hope this helps a little...

  • PowerBook G4 Battery Problem

    When I unplug the power cord from my PowerBook, it immediately turns off - even though the battery is '99% charged'. As soon I plug the power cord back in, the date is now set to December of '69!
    Can anyone tell me what the problem is?

    t sounds like you also need a new external battery, as when you unplug it, the system shuts down. If you push the button on the battery, do any of the LEDs light up? NO If you click on the blue apple, about this mac, more info, and power, does it show any full charge capacity? HERE IS THE INFO:

    How many cycles? DON'T KNOW - I'M A NOVICE USER! One failure mode for lithium batteries is that the data about the battery is bogus, ie, it shows 21,000mAh capacity (versus normal around 3500mAh).
