PowerBook G4 Install

Boot Camp did not install on this machine, can't find it at all post install of 10.5.4. Help? Thanks!

Thanks Niel, I thought so. I wasn't sure as leopard installed just fine, figured boot camp may do the same. Guess I better upgrade the pc yagi antenna card to mac to make the wifi on the lap work, huh? Thanks again, thought I had a work around for my issues.

  • OS 10.2 / Powerbook G4 - install CD not recognised

    Hi all,
I hope you can help. A colleague has brought in her Powerbook G4 to see if I can install 10.2 for her. The Install CD was stuck in the drive. At startup, the old Mac icon appears, as does the bouncing beachball of doom. Not much happens at all, although the drive spins.
I should point out at this point that this machine looks like it's been through a threshing machine - apparently at one point it was rolling around in the back of a car with a spare tyre whilst the car was being driven rather, er, enthusiasically. However, the machine itself has functioned just fine ofr several years before the attempted upgrade.
I've fsck'ed, reset the PRAM and tried target disk mode, and the HD appears to be fine. As far as I can tell, the OS itself is a bit of a state.
I've tried two different external USB CD drives, the internal drive and two different copies of 10.2, to no avail. Variously, I get a hang when booting with the option key down, the Prohibited sign and a few other variations. I've not been able to get the machine to boot into anything other than single user mode. Does anyone have any suggestions? As I said, I can view the filesystem when the machine is in target disk mode using my Macbook, and the install disks appear to be fine when tried in that system, too.

If this is an 867 MHz/1 GHz version it requires 10.2.1 or 10.2.3. Earlier models can use 10.1 or higher. If it's the first Gigabit model (500 and 667 MHz) then it requires a firmware update.
You cannot boot the computer from an external USB drive - only Firewire. Be sure you have a retail copy of Jaguar - the CD has the Jaguar "spotted pelt" label. If the disc you have has a gray OEM label then it's probably not going to be usable unless it's the disc that came originally with the computer. This would be unlikely inasmuch as you say the version you have is 10.2. If the disc has the word "Upgrade" on it you can only use it if a prior version of OS X is already installed.
The computer meets the minimum requirements for hardware. The hard drive must be formatted Mac OS Extended and Jaguar requires about 4 GBs of free space during installation.
It's possible the installer disc you have is defective, scratched, or dirty making it unreadable or the computer's optical drive is defective or out of alignment.

  • Can I use the start up discs for my Powerbook to install 10.4 on my iMac?

Hi, I just bought a used Powerbook G4 1.67GHz and wanted to use the start-up discs with OS 10.4.2 that came with the Powerbook on my older iMac G4 800MHz. What I really want to do is wipe the hard drive clean on my older iMac and then reinstall OS 10.4.2 and associated programs from the discs that came with the Powerbook. Will this work? I do not want to wipe everything off of the older iMac and then realize that these discs will not work on the older machine. There are two discs that say PowerBook G4 15-inch and 17-inch Mac OS X Install Discs version 10.4.2 AHT version 2.5.2 Disc version 1.0

  • PowerBook G4 Install Issue - Still waiting for root device

Hello Everyone and thank you for reading this post.
I have a last generation PowerBook G4 which I wanted to give to a family member since I've upgraded to a newer MacBook Pro.
I started by wiping the hard drive on the PB (in Target Disk Mode) using the Disk Utility application on the MBP using a FireWire 400 <-> FireWire 800 cable.
I verified and repaired the PB HD, no issues found... but that's when things started going bad.  I'm unable to boot from the Tiger Install DVD when I restart the PB (holding down C).  I get as far as selecting the language, at which point the mouse/trackpad work for a second before freezing up.  I'm not able to select a language and that's as far as it goes.
I've also reset the ram and pram (ald+cmd+r+p) with no luck
My latest attempt has been to use the MBP's Disk Utility to partition the HD on the PB (over FireWire) and I also created a Image of the Tiger Install DVD on my MBP. I used the Disk Utility option "scan image for restore" and it checked out ok.
After successfully creating 2 partitions on the PB HD and using Disk Utility to Restore the Tiger Install DVD image to the smaller partition (10GB), I booted the PB holding the Alt key.  As expected it found the Tiger Install DVD image on the HD, I clicked the arrow to continue.
At that point the grey screen with the apple logo appears and after a while it changes to a "forbidden" sign.  Not getting much information from that I rebooted in Verbose mode (Cmd+V) to see what was going on. The attached image is what I see, unfortunately I don't know much about what it is telling me.
Lastly, I thought the RAM might have gone bad and so I removed one of the 2 ram sticks with no luck.  I haven't tried the other RAM stick on it's own yet.
I know this community is full of smart people that might have some suggestion as to what is going on.  Here is hoping someone has an idea to help me along.
    Cheers

    Hello Dalstott;
Thanks for your suggestion and apologies for my late reply.  You're right, I hadn't been paying attention to the partition scheme.
I repartitoned the hard drive (this time watching out for the partition scheme) and tried again, however I'm not out of the woods yet.
With both partitions properly formatted, I restored to the Tiger install DVD image on the smaller one and booted from it.
I booted in Cmd+V mode to see what was going on and it seemed to be doing ok, then the screen switched from the verbose output over to the language selection (beginning of the operating system install).  However it will get stuck there within a few seconds.  The mouse is initially responsive, but after 3-5 seconds the cursor (and keyboard inputs) freeze.
I've tried now a couple of times to click through as many menus as possible before the keyboard/mouse inputs freeze. Sometimes, I get as far as selecting the hardrive to install the operating system on before the clock runs out.
Any idea whould could be going on?  Could this be a RAM issue?
    Thanks for your advice.

  • PowerBook G4 install error message

    Hello
I've got another thread about the nightmare that is installing this **** OS here on a PowerBook in this forum. But, I just got a new error and I think that it deserves its own thread.
Background: Installing 10.5, PowerBook G4, 1GB RAM. Hard Drive had 10.3.9 on it, tried an upgrade and that failed miserably. We got the data off of the PB and wiped the HD clean. The HD is less than 3 weeks old BTW.
Tried installing again a little while ago and it got to 39 minutes remaining - I was tense and anxious. I didn't even want to look lest I jinx it and it all goes to ****. Well, guess what....
Here's some of the stuff I see here:
System Failure: cpu=0; code=00000001 (Corrupt Stack)
    Exception state (sv=0x1e670a00)
    PC=0x000B2370.........; XCP=0x00000098 (System Failure)
    Backtrace:
backtrace terminated - frame outside of RAM: v=0x1F94BB10, p=000F8E0B
    Proceeding back via exception chain:
    Exception State (sv=0x1e886c80)
a whole bunch of other stuff
BSD process name corresponding to current thread: payloadExtractor
    Kernel Version:
    Darwin Kernel 9.0.0
    root :xnu-1228`1/RELEASE_PPC panic
    Repeats the backtrace error messages
BSD process name corresponding to current thread: payloadExtractor panic: We are hanging here...
So, that's the gist of the stuff I see here on her screen. The OS screen is still in the back, this is written over it.
Ideas? Should we all go punch Steve Jobs now?

    Hi,
I came across an error similar to this, (though not with Leopard). The error was with an eMac that would not install apps. Installers would return errors such as "Data does not match". It turned out that some RAM was faulty and was corrupting the data as it was being extracted into RAM after which it was failing the checksum.
When you install OS X, (Leopard or previous), as the HD is going to be installed on the OS is loaded from the CD and is installed into RAM to run the machine. Once the install is initiated data is copied from the disc into RAM extracted/expanded and then copied onto the HD. As such installing an OS is a RAM intensive process.
Thinking about it, I have had errors showing up when reinstalling an OS which didn't show up before because the RAM had never been fully used before.
Cutting to the chase I would say that there is a faulty bit of RAM in the PowerBook, (there is likely to be two 512MB DIMMS). I would try removing one and trying the install again. If it fails then try the other bit of RAM and do a re-install. If it works I would try testing the other bit because faulty RAM can cause all sorts of data corruption that can sometimes take a while to manifest itself.
    Hope this helps
    Robbie

  • Having Problems with Powerbook After installing New(non-apple) ram

I had a total of 768 mb of ram on my Powerbook G4 1.5 but I decided that I wanted to max it out to 1.25 gb. So I went out to the store and bought a used but tested 1gb Patriot ram chip to replace my 512mb . I put it in and went to system info to see if my computer detected it, and it did, it reported that I had 1.25gb just as I wanted. The next morning I was excited about using my newly upgraded computer ( I left it in sleep all night I don't know if that could have caused any problems) and when i turned it on first thing i got was that semi-transparent shut down your computer screen when OSX has experienced a problem, I had never seen this error message before, I can tell you I was pretty angry. I restarted my powerbook and then I logged in, I used Onyx and forced to run maintenance, thinking that might help, but again the comp crashed when i tried to open Onyx. and then again the next time trying to open Entourage, then AGAIN the next time trying to open Safari. What is going ON!? Now I am on my laptop again but i took out the 1gb and put back in my apple 512mb, so far so good but why did my 1gb not work?? I would like to have 1.25gb so ANY suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks, Eric

Acctually yes it was returnable and I did return it. But before i saw your comment I bought a new not pre-owned chip of the same kind, it also didnt work so I will take your advice and purchase a chip that supports bus slewing, maybe i'll go for the more expensive ones just for some added security
By the way thanks for the help,
    Eric

  • New HDD installed in PowerBook G3, won't boot from installation disk.

I just installed a new hard drive in my G3 Wallstreet and I can't get it to boot from the original Apple CD.
I've tried holding the C key as well as +⌥+⇧+⌫, but to no avail.
The CD tests fine in my old iMac G4, so maybe the culprit is the optical drive, but then again, I'm not so sure.
Is there a way to either boot my PowerBook or install OSX from my iMac G4?
Message was edited by: rick268 Also, I can boot into Open Firmware just fine.

    Thanks for your help.
WeLoveMacs wanted $50, but I just scored an entire topcase on eBay for $15, shipped. We'll see what happens.
    Allan Jones wrote:
I maintatined three Wallstreets for a friend for years. They stayed in regular service from new until he replaced them with MacBook Pros last summer!
In the years of keeping the old soldiers almost relavent, I ran into a "won't boot from a system disk" issue on two of them. In both cases, replacing a dead PRAM battery fixed the issue. Don't ask me why but that was the only thing that fixed them.
When I was supporting those, you could still get new Wallstreet batteries from Other World Computing. Today they no longer show them. I'm not sure where to steer your for a new one. USed batteries are like used chewing gum, IMHO.
You can try disconecting the wire from the PRAM battery to the logic board. That might help. Requires some take-down:

  • OS9 install problem with 10.4.9 powerbook

I got an OS9 retail disc to run classic on my system because I dont have any of the discs that came with the computer. First I tried to boot classic from the disc, but evidently that wont work because changes need to be made but the disc is of course read only, and it wont continue. Then I copied the system folder from the disc to the hard drive but an error comes up that says OS9 will only start up from the original disc. I also could not boot the disc and it doesnt and I cant get it to appear in the startup disc screen in sys preferences. I have considered getting a CD-RW and copying the OS9 disc onto it but I dont have one. Please help, I am a noob with OS.
    Thankyou very much

    Hi, Mark -
Are both Macs identical? If not, that could explain the problem.
Normally, when OS 9 is installed, it is tailored to be specific to the hardware on the machine running the installer; this installation will not be capable of booting another model Mac, one with different hardware.
However, such an install OS 9 can be used as Classic on a different machine - since Classic does not directly access the machine's hardware, full compatibility in that regard is not necessary.
There is a way around this using a retail OS 9 Install CD to do a universal (boot any Mac) install of OS 9. In your setup and following the way you have gotten OS 9.2.2 onto the PowerBook, this would mean your "Mac A" would need to be able to use a retail OS 9.2.1 Install CD.
Simpler would be to use either the original disks that came with the PowerBook and install OS 9 from those, then update as needed; or, if it is an original PowerBook G4 or a PowerBook G4 (DVI) model, use a retail OS 9.2.1 Install CD to directly install OS 9 onto the PowerBook.
One other item of note, perhaps - in order for a volume to be bootable using both OSX and OS 9 (on a machine capable of booting to either), it must have been formatted as Mac OS Extended (also called HFS+), and be no larger than 200GB.

  • Can't boot to 10.4 install disc with Powerbook G4 15" (alu hi-res)

I had the four disc cd version of tiger for my older G3 imac with a slot loading cd-rom drive. I've recently replaced the hard disc in the imac and need to reinstall tiger on it, but it seems the cd-rom drive's given up the ghost. It won't read any discs anymore. So I thought instead I'd start it up in target disc mode and use my powerbook to install tiger to it. However I've run into another problem.
Target disc mode works and everything but the powerbook is having trouble with the boot disc. I thought I'd be able to run the installer off the disc but it asks for the computer to be restarted, so I figured I'd do that and presumably target disc mode would still work. However upon restarting the powerbook and letting tiger load, it gets as far as the apple logo with the spinning loading icon, then after a few minutes of loading the screen goes blue, then it just gets stuck.
The disc drive eventually spins down and nothing happens. I have to force the computer to shut down. I've tried zapping the PRAM but that didn't work. Any ideas what's wrong? I have leopard 10.5 on the powerbook as my default OS, which works fine. The 10.4 disc is also apparently clean as a whistle, no visible scratches. I used disc utility to scan the disc when I was booted into 10.5 and it shows the disc as apparently being ok.

With the retail installer, it should work. Here's some links that may help.

  • I want to sync music from my PowerBook G4 to my Ipod Generation 7 but it says i need to update the Powerbook but the Powerbook says there is no updates plus i need to update Itunes but its not working.

I want to Sync music from my PowerBook 4 to my Ipod generation 7 but it says I need to update Itunes to 10.7 but when it finishes updating and i go back to itunes nothing has changed and Itunes is not updated.

In order to install iTunes 10.7 or later you need OSX 10.6.8 or later. A PowerBook can install up to OSX 10.5.8
I hate to be the bearer of bad news but any new iPod won't sync with iTunes on Mac not using an Intel processor.

  • Another narcoleptic PowerBook - possible reasons?

    Hi all,
My PowerBook G4 15" 1-1.5GHz has developed a case of going to sleep as soon as it's booted.
I can wake it but after 1 second it returns to sleep. Within the 1 second awake intervals I have found no report of 'overtemp' in the Console log. I have also had it running without the keyboard and trackpad connected, and also without the PRAM battery connected. I'm not sure if that's recommended but it didn't solve the problem anyway. I have tried resetting the PMU (holding power button for 5 seconds) but I'm not sure it actually did anything. I should also point out that I tried replacing the PRAM battery, which also didn't change anything.
The problem developed after I opened up my PB because it was getting very hot. I put it back together (after just having a look inside and not actually taking anything out) and the sleeping problem started, and also the trackpad stopped working. This made me think it was the trackpad temp sensor but I can't actually locate it on the 1-.15GHz model - any ideas?
At one point I did get the trackpad working but the constant sleeping problem still occurred. Would I be right in saying that this means it is a software issue and that the hardware is OK? I tried to re-instal OS X 10.5.4 but my PB won't boot from the DVD. Trying from an iMac in Firewire Target mode also failed.
I was thinking about buying a replacement palm rest with keyboard and trackpad but I've read that the problem still might occur.
Does anyone know any other possible reasons or solutions for the problem?
    Regards,
    Ben

Well Target Disk Mode boots only work in the following manner:
If you set let's say a MacBook Pro in Target Mode, its optical drive can be used to boot the Powerbook, and install to the Powerbook a Powerbook compatible operating system.   That includes the retail 10.4.6, 10.5, 10.5.1, 10.5.4, and 10.5.6, or the original Powerbook compatible CD.
But you can't try to set the Powerbook in target mode, and install the operating system from the MacBook Pro.
The problem with doing this, is the Powerbook can't run the software from a MacBook Pro's installer discs, or 10.5 or later as installed on a MacBook Pro, or have GUID partitioning done to it.
The machine with the Firewire logo is the one that is nothing more than a very expensive external optical or hard drive.  Once it is out of Target Disk Mode whatever drivers get installed on it have to be compatible with it.

  • Garageband wont open after install

I installed garageband from iLife 06 on a 500mz imac G3 running 10.3.9 with my machine in target disk mode with a friend having the install DVD run from his powerbook G4. installed only Garageband for space reasons and the install appeared to be successful. when I rebooted my imac, garageband would not open. ran software update and there were 2 updates that were found and installed. still no go. any suggestions? thanks

I think I know what your problem is, because I am having the same problem. I own a iMac G4 (700Mhz), and decided to transfer over GarageBand to my old iMac G3 (400 Mhz). I did so, and the installation went fine, but when I went to open it after installing it, it wouldn't open! The problem is, I think, is that the operating systems G4 and G3 are different. Thus, a G4 application won't run on a G3, same thing for a G5 application, it won't run on a G3. Thing is, though, a G5 application runs on a G4. I tried installing a previous version of GarageBand (1.0.3) and it installed right, and even started to load up, but, all of a sudden, a pop-up said it couldn't find the instruments. I am trying to find a older version of GarageBand online, but so far have been un-sucsessful. I think you should call an Apple specialist and ask, at least, thats what I'm going to do.
Sorry I couldn't be of help,

  • Can I use DVD to install os 10.3 on a tangerine?

I have bought a tangerine iBook for my wife. I should get it soon. I will upgrade memory and hard drive. But I need to find out if I can use my OS 10.3 DVD install disks on it. powrbook G4   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

If you're ambitious you could put the new drive in your powerbook, load the OS, then take it out and place it in the ibook. I'm not sure as to what effect the installing of 'Powerbook specific' system components will have on the clamshell however - I can't see there being a problem though. If your ibook surprisingly comes with a firewire port then you could install to it via target disc mode. All this of course assuming your DVD allows it.
