My fan is constantly running since I installed Leopard. I'm running 10.5.1. My computer is really really hot, much hotter than usual. I ran Disk Utility and it takes forever to complete and then I get the following msg. Can anyone help?

Hi
First you could try reinstalling Leopard and selecting the 'Archive and Install' and 'Preserve Network Users and Settings' options. If that does not work, backup all important data and reformat and reinstall using the Leopard Installer DVD.
Hope this helps, Tony

  • Need Major Help! Powerbook G4. PLEASE HELP

I have a Powerbook G4 running OS X 10.5.8 and for some reason I can't get it to lanch apps or anything. The finder got corrupted and I've tried everything to get to disk utility but I can't. I tried safe mode. So I figured I might just make a partition on an external drive for my mac and lanch it off this copy of my HD I made a while back. It's in .hfs format. It used to be a .dmg but I was wondering since I (Sorta) don't have a restore disk if I could mount it to a mac partiontion launch my mac from that and fix the finder file. How can I do this? I also have a .iso I got online of the restore disk but I'm not sure it's the right one since they have .exe's on the disk. Not really complying with the info I used to remember about my disk. Please help.

I think you want a bootable clone. PPC Machines (G4,G5) need FIREWIRE drives) Intel Machines can use USB  and Firewire drives.
I have a Powerbook G4 and use both SuperDuper and Carbon Copy Cloner for backups.Below are some links to give you more information about the advantages of a bootable clone backup.

The charger look out of place and bent to one side and i really need to boot it as i go to uni in NYC next month ,from Britain, and it has all of my backup work , music & photos ! Can anyone help with any information or sites or anyone who can help ? Thanks , Danny Its a G4 POwerbook Titanium

Danny, your photo links are defective. But if the AC adapter plug that connects to the computer looks bent, then it is bent, or else the port to which it connects in the Powerbook is broken. If the plug itself is visibly damaged, replace the AC adapter. If the port is cockeyed or you can easily wiggle it when the plug is connected to it, the DC-in card inside the Powerbook is damaged and will have to be replaced. Either problem can prevent battery charging or prevent the computer from getting any power at all from the adapter.

  • Powerbook Revive- Please Help

I have a powerbook G4. Awhile it started quitting applications unexpectidely and doing the kernel panic. Tried upgrading to leopard never worked installation failed. Reset the PRam grey sreen with question mark.Tried reinstalling tiger after several tries worked. Still quiting tried to reinstall now doesnt work says error installing. Superdrive making funny noise. Downloaded apple hardware test for powerbook. when trying to use says not compatiable. All i want to do is use my mac again is there a way arorund this maybe to install tiger and get rid of kernel panic???

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Call AppleCare if you lost your hardware test for your machine:
    http://www.apple.com/contact/phone_contacts.html
Even if the hardware test doesn't detect anything wrong, your RAM may have gone bad or needs reseating. See my FAQ*:
    http://www.macmaps.com/badram.html
If after replacing with high quality RAM the kernel panics persist, the question becomes, how old is your machine? How full was the hard drive before the issues began, and how big is the hard drive? Do you have anything connected to the machine besides the power?

  • 10.4.11 or my PowerBook?  PLEASE HELP!

OK, so I'm trying to take this in stride. I ran the 10.4.11 update as the grouped download update b/c Safari wouldn't start after running the regular software update. The computer restarted and now gets stuck on the Mac OS X loading page (where the blue line usually fills up). It gets past the spinning wheel and basically just stops here. This has never happened before. I tried starting in safe mode, but that didn't seem to work. Incidentally, my computer was on mute before, so I can't hear any restart tones.
I'm a grad student heading into finals and need to get on here desperately. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I'm a grad student heading into finals and need to get on here desperately. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
This is what I keep reminding people. Don't update your system if you don't have time to possibly troubleshoot the system too. Upgrading should only be done when you need it for software compatibility, and you are prepared to upgrade. The fact you are asking for help suggests you didn't backup your data. Go through my backup FAQ* and look at ways to restore your data:
    http://www.macmaps.com/backup.html
Then we can troubleshoot why your machine won't startup. In general you should always follow these directions* when updating your machine:
    http://www.macmaps.com/upgradefaq.html
Let us know when you are satisfactorally recovered so that in even you have to replace your hard drive, you won't be put back too much. That would be the last resort solution, but we need to troubleshoot all possibilities from the small to the big until we find out what is causing your problem.

Is there any way around this? I will be so disappointed if not as all my music ect is on my powerbook.
    Please Help!!!!!!

As already provided, the iPhone 4 requires 10.5.8 or later.
This is included with the iPhone 4 specs via this link, and on the retail sales box.

10.5 is not a free update just as 10.4 was not a free update over 10.3.

  • G4 Powerbook Hard Drive Problem - PLEASE HELP!!

I have a powerbook G4 15 inch alu. It is running OSX version 10.4.11
My system profiler tells me I have a 74.5GB hard drive with 69.34GB used, but I had wiped the HD in September 2008 and reinstalled the OS and few other programmes and files, so this shouldn't be the case at all.
I have found that my the problem is with my Users folder - within Users, my user account (the main account, I have another account setup so my mum can use her iPhone) has 67GB used. But when I go into my user account (clicking through the icons, after double-clicking the MacintoshHD desktop icon), none of the folders within my account run to anwhere near 67GB. Totalled, they come to around 10-15GB at most. There's a good 50GB or so of hard drive that just seems to be missing.
I ran Drive Genius to repair permissions and that eliminated a couple of GB of this 'missing space' but no more than that. How can I go about finding and reaccessing my lost hard drive space?
FWIW - I reinstalled the OS in September because this was my University laptop and the result of 4-5 years use had resulted in loads of unwanted files. I saved the important stuff to discs and then reinstalled because it was much easier (I thought) than trying to find and get rid of all the unwanted stuff.
Please please help. At the moment, the computer is running fine if a little sluggishly (understandable given how much of the hard drive is 'used'), but I had a nasty experience earlier this year with my G5's hard drive crapping ut and really don't want to end up in the same boat with this one. I also need that extra space back so I can use some programmes I can't install or work with as things stand.
Many thanks for taking the time to read this and respond, I don't know enough about computers to have any clue as to how to proceed, so your help in this matter would be greatly appreciated.

eww - will do and report back.
cornelius - apologies for the ambiguity there. Hope this clears things up a bit:
Users folder = get info says 69.34GB used
Double-click on the Users folder and I get three folders - the shared folder, my mum's account folder, and my account folder. My account is the main/master account.
The shared folder is empty. My mum's account folder has a couple GB used, mine has 66.5GB used.
I double-click on my account folder, and get icons/folders for Desktop, Library, Movies, etc (the usual stuff). When I do Get Info for each of these, the sum of GB used by them is about 10-15GB, nowhere near the 66GB supposedly used.
If it helps any, the File System is Journalled HFS+
S.M.A.R.T. status is verified, and Drive Genius, Disk Warrior, and Disk Utility aren't picking up anything bad other than the corrupted permissions I repaired prior to making this post. Repairing permissions only freed up a few GB more space, still got 50 missing GB to locate and free up. Or start saving for a replacement HD, but if this is a sign of a crash, I'd rather know now so I can plan for that.
Many thanks to both of you for responding so quickly - hopefully this problem is solvable.
It doesn't make sense, there's nothing else which could have used those 'missing' GB. And, as I only reinstalled everything in September I know there's no way the few programmes I've added and 10 or so CDs I've copied onto the G4 could account for the missing 50GB. My HD should have most of its space free - minus the space used by OSX, any OSX updates, and literally a handful of small apps and files.

I disasembly and assembly again the PB and nothing. I try to reset PRAM SHIFT CTRL ALT POWER and nothing.

  • I am unable to get itunes to run on my powerbook g4. Please help!

My sister gave me her old powerbook g4. She erased the hard drive and relaoded the software. I cant get itunes to open or run. It said i needed quicktime so I downlaoded it from the apple site but it still will not run. Am I doing something wrong? Is there a different download that I need? Please help. I am new to apple computers so please be paitcent with me.

Your computer may need a series of updates to bring it up to speed with the last versions of software supported by 10.4  Note that these will themselves be several years old since Apple hasn't supported Tiger for several years.  In particular you cannot upgrade to the newest iTunes or use any brand new i-devices on a computer running 10.4
One way to do updates is to run Software Update.  Do the updates one by one since trying to do many at one time often results in problems.  Use Disk Utility to repair permissions before and after.
For general Tiger update questions I suggest you post on the Tiger 10.4 forum.  As for iTunes, the newest version you can run is 9.2.1 available at
iTunes 9.2.1 (the newest that will run under Tiger) - http://support.apple.com/kb/dl1056

It recognizes and accepts the network through network diagnostics but when i open Safari i get a blank screen! When tring to connect to AOL, it does not dial. I know its configuration. This is my last hope! Ive spoken to AOL & Time Warner to no avail.4 hours wasted and still not internet access. I even hooked up the cable directly to laptop and get same resilts.... PLEASE HELP. Im feeling as if I should have purchased a DELL instead....
    Jeff

    Hi,
I just purchases a pwerbook G4 too, and can't connect to AOL either, I have also spent 4 hours talking AOL time warner as well as my router company and MAC specialist and no one can help. Have you been able to connect? My last hope is that the last MAC specialist i spoke to said that the AOL software may not be compatible with the latest version of MAC OSX. I downloaded the AOL 10.3.7 version because they said that was the newest one. We may just have to wait until AOL has a newer version. Please let me know if you were able to use AOL, I know that this post is about a month old.
    Thanks,
    V

  • IPOD not being seen in ITunes...I have tried everything - please help!!

Okay, so I have tried everything listed on Apple's website to get my IPOD to be recognized in ITUNES. When I plug my IPOD into the USB port, the "do not disconnect" screen pops up. Nothing happens in ITUNES. Windows Vista pops up and says "Do you want me to scan and fix the IPOD F: drive?" Either selection doesn't do anything. I have tried the 5 R's from apple. I have tried to download every update available etc. I have tried to even go in and update the driver. However Vista is telling me that I have the most up to date version of everything. When my IPOD isn't connected to the PC, everything seems normal - except for the fact that there is no music or anything on it. But all menus are available and accessbile. Can anyone suggest what to do here? I am at a loss. Please help!! Thanks.

Yes, I'm having the same problem. If I connect my iPod to my laptop while iTunes is open, the 'Do not disconnect' sign appears, the battery does not charge, and my iPod doesn't appear either in iTunes or on my desktop. Since it doesn't appear in either of these places, I have to ignore the 'do not disconnect' sign and disconnect anyway. If I then reset my iPod, quite iTunes and reconnect iPod to laptop, everything's fine - iTunes opens, and recognizes the iPod. I guess this isn't the end of the world, since I can simply avoid ever connecting my iPod to my laptop while iTunes is open, but is this normal?

  • Managing multiple sites in different iWeb versions - PLEASE HELP!

apnewbie/cyclosaurus/roddy/old toad (and any others more knowledgeable than i):
i've run into a bit of a pickle. i am hoping someone can help straighten me out. i am about to jump out of a window. here's the rundown:
(for starters, i have a .mac account and am publishing to .mac.) i created a site in iWeb 1.1.2 on my work computer (mac book pro). worked great, really lovely. thought to myself, "hey, i'd like to create another site from home, but i don't have iWeb at home (powerbook G4) - i should buy iLife 08 so i can build these things from home and not have personal files on my work computer."
so: i had a site that i created within 1.1.2 with files written to iDisk. i purchased iWeb 08 and would like to have another site, but this one is being created in 2.0. i also am using a personal domain name this time around bought with google apps and hosted by godaddy. i published the new work in progress for a test run and...you guessed it...my original 1.1.2 site was rewritten by the 2.0 site. and the 2.0 site comes up as the standard google search page for domains that aren't up and running. whooopsie.
sorry for the lengthy intro, but that's the background. i guess my specific questions are:
    1) i want to be able to maintain multiple sites from iWeb 2.0...can i open my 1.1.2 domain file in 2.0 and successfully bring that site into 2.0?
    2) what is the most efficient and easiest way to get both of these sites running in 2.0? right now i have two domain files (created on two different computers).
    3) for domain management, is it best to move from the iWeb folder in my home library to different folders (one for each site, with separate domain files, and my 2.0 domain file is NOT called domain, it's the name of the site) to another location? (and of course, i will back these up just in case.) and when i want to update a site, i just open that individual domain file, right? or will these sites publish over each other?
please help. i am at my wits end. i'm sure this is a relatviely simple issue, but i'm new to iWeb.
thanks, thanks, thanks for your help guys.
    joojy

    joojy,
    Welcome to the forums!
First of all, your original 1.1.2 site may not, in fact, have been overwritten. It is quite possible that the site remains in it's position on the iDisk, Web/Sites/iWeb/YourSite, but because you published to the iDisk (.Mac) from 2.0, a different index.html file has been placed in the root level Web directory which is causing the 404 error. Navigate to the directory on the iDisk, using the Go menu in Finder, and look to see what is actually there. Follow this path:
    Go/iDisk/My iDisk/Web/Sites/iWeb/YourSiteWillBeHereIfYourLuckIsGood
If your site is there, great; if it isn't, it's not really a problem because hopefully you still have the Domain.sites file on the MacBook Pro and you can republish it if necessary. If it is there, you can modify the index.html file on the iDisk using a text editor and get your url redirected back to where it should be.
Second, do not open your 1.1.2 Domain.sites file with 2.0 until you have a backup of this Domain file. External drives are best for this. Assuming the backup is in place, launch 2.0, choose the Domain.sites file, and click on "update". It will be updated to a Domain.sites2 file. If the site looks ok then continue on with editing/publishing.
Skipping to question (3), by all means, abandon the default location of the Domain.sites file in the Home folder's Library and get accustomed to keeping your Domain files in their own, respective folders. When you want to open one just double-click it.
You are going to encounter difficulties publishing multiple sites in 2.0.2, unless you keep all of the sites in a single Domain file. 2.0 is publishing to a different directory on the iDisk than 1.0; it publishes to /Web/Sites/, as opposed to /Web/Sites/iWeb/. Publishing a site from a separate Domain file erases previously published sites. I have been able to publish multiple sites, from multiple Domain.sites2 files, by mounting the iDisk and actually moving the Site folder back one level, into the root Web folder, and then publishing. When finished, I move it back again. If you have RSS feeds you will probably get a 'file in use' error. The alternative, (other than keeping all sites in a single Domain), is to publish the site to a folder and then manually drop the Site folder into the Web/Sites/ directory on the iDisk. Of course, some .Mac functions are lost when publishing this way.
Work through this info and post back.
