Welcome to the the Apple discussion forums.
Can you give us a little more information on your machine, ie, how long have you had it, when did this start, has any new software been installed, and has anything changed in the configuration on the machine?

  • Powerbook and SSD - Freeze after wake up?

    Hi
I installed a Supertalent 32GB DuraDrive ET2 SSD in my PowerBook G4 12" 1,33GHz and now after wake up it freeze. The keyboard and trackpad show no response any more. I have to shut it down or close and open the lid several times.
I read that some SSDs have to be set to "master" by jumper. But this drive don't mention this option the data sheet.
Has anyboody running this drive in an PowerBook?
Any hint to solve this? I tried already a fresh install. 10.3.9, 10.4, 10.4.11 and 10.5 = the same problem.
    Thanks in advance
    bookpower

I tried to contact them. Without a jumper it should be master.
The manual say nothing about but it cames with a jupmer an 4 screws in the package.
So I tried it with the jumper on the first pins too.
    I tried two similar ssd drives in an PB G4  12" 1,0 GHz, PB G4 12" 1,33 GHz and PB G4 17" 1,5 GHz.
On all PB are the trackpad and keyboard are freezing after wakeup. This happens only with autosleep mode. I thried all setings in 10.4.11
If I close the lid or select the hibernation manualy there isn't any problem.
Also I tried to set diferent hibernation modes via the open firmware (write to disk).
Still I can't use the auto sleep settings.
Can I run any protocol to catch what causes this behavior?

  • Problems freezing after update to Mavericks 10.9.5

I have a late 2011 Macbook Pro. all was fine until i clicked the button to update to Mavericks 10.9.5 (and I think there was another update too). Everything froze, the touchpad didn't work,.. nothing. Force quit did nothing. I closed lid - but later when I lifted it, it was all still frozen and I resorted to pressing and holding the on/off button.
I've spent the last 24 hours trying different things - sometimes when it freezes, the laptop seems to think the edge of the screen is in the middle (i.e. keep taking the mouse left and it appears on the right of the screen), and also I am getting funny lines and dots on the screen (is it possible it's my graphics??) and the cursor changes to a funny vertical dotted line.
I tried starting it in safe mode - it got to the log in screen with loads of lines etc. on the screen, but I persevered as I had heard it would produce diagnostics.... anyway I ended up with a blue screen with black lines down it. Eventually I pressed the on/off button again.... so safe mode is not working... (I think.. unless I didn't wait long enough?)
As suggested on here, I went into the library and have now dragged the caches folder onto the desktop, and I am waiting to see if my laptop freezes again. This appears to have copied the folder onto my desktop, rather than moved it - is that right?
Today I have also removed 300GB of photos, as I was down to my last 19GB - just in case that was the problem, but it has frozen since, so I'm guessing not. I have 16GB RAM so that shouldn't be a problem.
I'm fairly new to Mac. I haven't encountered any error codes, just screen freezes and odd graphics. I haven't been able to find where the diagnostics are to run. When it freezes, it gets very hot, so I have been pressing the on/off button and letting it cool off.
I'm still awaiting to see if it happens again, but I wondered has anyone else experienced anything similar or does anyone have any advice. Any advice gratefully received!

Boot into the Recovery Drive by holding down Command R when restarting.
Run Repair Drive and Repair Permissions using Disk Utility in Recovery.
Restart and run the combo updater.

However, you might need to reinstall OS X in the Recovery Drive. This process should not damage your data but it's always advised that you backup first.
If you don't have a clone backup it's time to start. Just like a seat belt and an air bag protect you in different ways when driving, you need both Time Machine and a clone for full protection.
Both of these applications can be used to create a clone. You will need an external drive to backup your data.

Free space: It suggested you have a minimum of 10% free but this can vary depending on the size of the drive. When you get below 10GB free you need to start moving files off the drive.
You can keep your iPhoto and iTunes Libraries on an external drive. Hold down the option key when launching the app to point to the new library location.

  • I am having problems with my Mac Book Pro Retina locking up after updating from Lion to Maverick.  I was having no trouble until I did the upgrade, and now it is locking up, freezing after about 5 minutes, and getting hot.  Any suggestions?

A while back I had an upgrade available to me.  I had Lion when I bought this Pro.  The upgrade is Maverick.  After downloading and installing the upgrade, my computer started freezing while doing anything.  I might not get this completely written before it freezes.  The keyboard is getting hot, and I have to use the power button to turn it off.  After it has sat for at least 10 minutes, I can turn it back on.  I might be able to do some work for 5 minutes, or up to 30 minutes before it freezes again.  Some of my programs are not working, either.
I would appreciate any suggestions anyone might have, or even go back to Lion, if I can figure out how to.
    Thanks.

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • PowerBook keeps freezing after sleep.

I have a 1Ghz PowerBook that often freeze when I try to wake it up from sleep. The screen goes dark and a box appears in the middle telling me that I need to hold down the power button for a few seconds and to restart, it's written in a few different languages. I bought a new battery for it and have been having this problem since then. It never happened with my old battery, but I made sure that I calibrated the new one properly.
I'm running OSX 10.4.8 on it and have 1gb of memory.
Does anybody have any suggestions about what is happening and what I can do to stop it from happening anymore?
    Thanks.

  • Macbook pro freezes after sleep, after 6 months of not having that problem

    Hello,
I'm really frustated with my macbook pro. Like the tittle says, my computer freezes after waking up and the only thing to do is use the On/Off button. It is a macbook pro '13 2010.
This problem first happened around 6 months ago. Around Feb '11, i experienced the same issue. First thing i noticed was that the wifi suddenly stopped working. To try to fix it, I turned airport off and then couldn't turn it back on and had to restart my machine. Then when closing the lid and then opening it again, my computer would work for about 5 min and then freeze. Nothing worked and I had to shut it down using the power button.  Then the problem got worse because the computer started freezing randomly. I know it wasn't an application problem because it happened using different apps. I took my computer to an authorized apple service provider and they told me the harddrive had some bad sectors i think, and they replaced the harddrive because I was still under earranty at the time.
Now, Sept '11, the problem came back. First the airport problem happened and now my computer freezes when waking up, the exact same thing that happened 6 months ago. I went to disk utility and repaired disk permisions and still no solution. My warranty expired last month so calling apple won't be of any help. I installed lion the day it came out and was working without any problems until now, so I don't think lion is the problem.
Has anybody had this same problem with their computer? I don't know what to do or how to tell if my harddrive is causing the problem again.
    Thanks

All of the new unibody MBs/MBPs can use (6GB 4X2GB)
But yes you should definitely make sure the RAM is seated correctly and you didn't touch the gold part of the RAM during installation. Though if something was seriously wrong it would have made loud obnoxious sounds while you tried to start up.
Aside from Installation issues, you should reset the PRAM as noted previously. Hold down command-option-p-r at startup until it chimes twice.
OP, looking at Super Talent's website they don't even have 1066MHz chips listed in their DDR3 chips. All I see is a jump from 800MHz (DDR2) to 1333MHz (DDR3).
Either way, I can't imagine you got that great a deal for the RAM that even if it is seemingly the correct RAM you can get better deals in the links I posted in my other post.

  • When will Apple fix Lion OS X v10.7 from freezing after my 27" Mac is put to sleep? I must admit that I am amazed that Apple would release an OS that has this problem, for that matter any serious problem.

When will Apple come up with a fix for Lion OSX v10.7 from freezing after Lion is put to sleep?  My 27"Mac freezes after being put to sleep and a hrad boot is required to be able to use the system.  I have complained to the local Apples store numerous times. The Genious Bar re-installed the OS and it crashed the very next day and continues to crash two or three times per week.  I am amazed that Apples would relase a product, any product before it has been proven to be solid, then again, look at the release of the newest IPhone 4-S.

The question/problem is "My 27"Mac freezes after being put to sleep."
Gabor, I can't help, except to report that I, too, experience very frequent unexplained crashes and freezes in Lion. However (so far) not when I put it to sleep.
There are a lot of reports about freezes. Here's one. Maybe you should join that thread. Someone there is also reporting that "Lion has a bug that freezes the system when waking the system from sleep."
Are you getting freezes/crashes at other times or only when sleeping the computer?
And does it successfully go to sleep?
Does it freeze when you wake it, or at the point where you're putting it to sleep?

  • G31M Freezing After RAM Check, Says 1596fsb which might be problem..

    Hello....
Putting together a Dual core duo with a MSI G31M mobo. It keeps resetting itself.. wont even show post.. all i here is one tiny, quick (not loud) beeping. and if it hit DEL or TAB... it will show the corresponding screen, but just frozen.
The insert button thing isnt working either (yes i did total power removal).
It says on the top of the POST screen "Speed: 1596 mhz" which might be the problem...
It freezes after "Init USB controllers: OK | 1015mb..." then it stops..
    Thanks everybody...

    Hi,
your BIOS Version is too old to properly support your E7400.  That is why the CPU Frequency only shows as "1596 mhz" and that is also why the system does this:

There are three possible solutions to solve the situation:
    1) Install a processor supported by BIOS Version 7.1 to be able to properly turn on your system and then update the BIOS to the latest Version to be able to use your E7400 (update should be done from DOS only).
    2) Ask in a local computer shop or contact your reseller to do the same thing for you.
    3) Connect an internal floppy drive and a PS/2 Keyboard and then try to force the system into AMI BIOS Recovery Mode.  Instructions:
    Quote
Rename the desired AMI BIOS file to AMIBOOT.ROM and save it on a floppy disk. e.g. Rename A569MS23.ROM to AMIBOOT.ROM
Insert this floppy disk in the floppy drive. Turn On the system and press and hold Ctrl-Home to force update. It will read the AMIBOOT.ROM file and recover the BIOS from the A drive.
When 4 beeps are heard you may remove the floppy disk and restart the computer.
Even though the AMI BIOS Recovery Procedure is the only chance you have to solve the situation without installing a different processor, it does not work in all cases.  However, as it is an easy procedure, it is at least worth a try.

  • Mouse freezes after I fixed logic board/graphics problem. Help!!!!

    Hi,
    I'm sick ofthis stupid laptop!!Aghghghggh
I recently had a problem with my 14' ibook with the display going out. I thought that if I put a monitor adapter on it, it would display, but it still didn't.
Now, I put a search through and found out from Ronda Wilsons posts that you could put a 1 mm to 1.5 mm square on the raised square under the lower case to bring the graphics back. It was a success!!! My computer loaded fine!!!
BUUUUUUUUTTTTTTT, now the darn thing's mouse freezes after about two to five minutes of being on. So when I start it, I can click on a couple folders and then the mouse arrow just sits there.. Then I have to press the power button inorder to restart it. Same thing happens for the fifth time. I also installed a replacement modem for the 14' as well as the sticky square for the logic board problem. Both works fine.
Could my mouse be affected by the change and how do I fix it?

Have you tried resetting the PMU?
The PMU (Power Management Unit) controls trackpad function, so resetting it often helps when the trackpad isn't working (or isn't working right).

  • Photo booth freezing after taking photos or videos...

so almost every time i use my iSight and photobooth to take a photo or record a video my mac freezes and i cant force quit or even click on anything. i end up having to manually shut down my mac and then reboot it. it still saves the photos/videos most of the time but its very obnoxious that it freezes after each time i try to take a photo, especially since i just got this MacBookPro a week ago.
has anyone experienced similar problems and know any solutions?

    Welcome to Apple Discussions, UnadmirableActs
so such problems can be caused by software issues you can fix.
Mac OS X is a robust operating system, but it does require some simple occasional maintenance for best performance. It sounds to me like your Mac may need some maintenance now.
First, you should Safe Boot your Mac. Safe Boot forces an automated OS X disk check and repair routine. If your disk needs significant work, Safe Boot may take several minutes to finish. Do NOT try to use your Mac while in Safe Mode. When your desktop appears in Safe Mode, immediately restart your Mac normally. Use the Safe Boot procedure the first time you start your OS X Mac after any hard shutdown (whenever you "manually shut down my mac".)
When your Mac restarts normally after a Safe Boot, you should repair your startup disk's permissions. Depending upon how much repair is needed, permissions repair may take many minutes or even a few hours the first time you do it. Subsequent runs should take only a few minutes.
For normal maintenance (other than after a hard shutdown,) you can also use Disk Utility rather than a Safe Boot to verify your startup disk.
As soon you have performed your OS X maintenance, try the suggestions in Apple's How to Troubleshoot iSight to test your iSight's function. If you encounter problems after having performed OS X maintenance, try the reset process suggested in the Troubleshooting suggestions. The reset usually restores proper function of the built-in iSight.

  • G3 PB freezes after sleep

    I've got a G3 series Powerbook, either 1st or 2nd gen, don't know which.
It has OS 9.2.2 installed on a 2 gb HD, 256 megs RAM.
It has this funny habit of freezing when you wake it up after sleeping, even for a moment. I've tried starting with just the base OS active, and it still happens, so it seems it's not a problem with extensions or conflicts.
It also quits the Finder and restarts, then freezes after a moment when you eject the wireless card.
Also, the drive has only 78 megs free.
Any thoughts on what might be the cause/solution for this?
    Thanks

    Hi, Brett -
Make sure that there is a folder named Multiprocessing in the Extensions folder (in System Folder), and that that folder contains the file named Apple CPU Plugins. The absence of that can cause wake-from-sleep problems -
Article #TA22088 - Mac OS: Do Not Remove Multiprocessing Folder
If that folder is missing, it can be easily replaced without installing any software - insert an OS 9.2.1 Install CD (do not boot to the CD), then go into the System Folder on that CD and copy the Multiprocessing folder from within its Extensions folder to the proper location on your hard drive.
    Other possible causes -
    • There are some issues linked to the version of CD/DVD Driver extension and an Iomega Driver extension; these can also affect sleep.
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=121946
    • In some configs the extension named InputSprocket Extension can cause some conflicts with 3rd-party USB extensions. Testing for such conflicts (such as by disabling the InputSprocket Extension temporarily) can reveal whether they may be at play.

  • PowerBook installation problems...

Anyone have any ideas on this G4 PowerBook installation problem. I haven't seen anything in any other threads about this...
I purchased a Leopard family pack a week and a half ago and the installation went without a hitch on my Intel Mac Mini. I thought I would give it a try on my G4 PowerBook... A week and a half later I am still trying...
Everytime I try the installation I get about a 1/4 of the way through and if I am lucky (?) a yellow triangle pops up and states that some of the system files were unable to copy onto the Macintosh HD (usually the system just freezes though. I have let it sit for 8+ hours and the progress bar does not move). I have read through the installation log and it has pages and pages of the same error "Unable to locate DB Handler 1". I have tried other installation methods thinking that the system did not like the "Upgrade" option. I have tried "archive and install" and "erase and install" and still nothing. I have even tried putting the Mac Mini in "Target Disc Mode" and installing via Firewire (thought maybe I had a finicky DVD drive in the PowerBook) but I get the same error everytime.
I called Apple that day after purchasing Leopard and after hours of being on hold I was told that the Leopard DVD I purchased is defective (kind of odd since the installation went perfect on the Mac Mini). Apple is supposed be sending me a new DVD but I am still waiting (it has been a week and a half and 2 more calls later).
    Anyone have any ideas?

Me and my friend have PowerBooks and we both had this problem too! im almost positive the disc isnt defective because mine has worked great on other computers too. Anyways i found a solution to this problem. Restart your PowerBook holding "T" then it will go into Firewire mode. Connect a firewire cable to the Mac mini and a hard drive should show up on the desktop of the Mac Mini (thats your PowerBook hard drive)
Put the Leopard Install DVD in the Mac mini and proceed to install
When install location screen shows up make sure to choose the PowerBook Note: if you dont usually it will default to the other computer and that will clear your hard drive.
Then start installing after this you shouldnt have any problems.
When the computer starts up it will show up on your Mac Mini display all you have to do is shutdown the Mac Mini and Powerbook and disconnect the cord. thats it! Good Luck
    Austin
