Powerbook G4 RAM Installation

Hi Everyone!
Major Problem! I just got my 512 GB RAM card today and I installed it and my 15 inch titanium powerbook g4 seems to be acknowledging it... However, after 5 minutes of having my comptuer on, i'm asked to restart it. Why is it doing this to me and how can i make it stop? If anyone could help, I would love it. Thank you.

Return the RAM. It sounds faulty.

  • Powerbook DDR2 Ram with 333 or 533 MHz?

    hi,
i'm wondering a little bit, i was looking on the apple page (.de and .com) and they say in their technical specification for the new powerbook, that is has PC2-4200 DDR2 at 333MHz as memory.
hmm, but the specification of PC2-4200 DDR2 requires at least 533MHz, that's also that what some internet shop sell for powerbooks as ram.
so question is, is apple using 533MHz parts running at 333MHz only!?!?? or is it a mistake on the pages and an old information of the last generation?!?!
    thanks in advance ..
    thomas

    thanks for welcoming me
and exacly at the specifications is the problem .. because there is written that they run at 333MHz (the 15" and 17" model) but they have ddr2 which should run normaly at 533MHz ... (probably it's right for the 12" model cause they use diffrent memory ...) ..
    hmmm.....

  • Wallstreet and Tiger: no OS X 8GB "limit", issues if 512MB RAM installation

Since I felt that I could improve the performance of my [Wallstreet with Tiger|http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1390427&tstart=30], I decided to give a try to the break of the 8GB barrier as already reported in this forum so taking the occasion to substitute the 4200rpm 80GB disk with a 5400rpm one.
Again, acknowledgements to jpl, Tinkerman and others I do not recall for the helpful messages in the forum showing, if not else, that all this is possible. Unavoidable acknowledgements to the XPF developer too, of course.
I must admit that, while this time I was expecting a rapid installation after the method set out last time, actually I spent hours with any kind of issues of OS 9 either not installing or not booting even if from a disk cloned from the past working one. I was starting to think to some failed areas in the new disk but it appeared working in any other circumstance so eventually I realised that I was operating not only without the original CPU (Sonnet Crescendo 500MHz G4) but with 512MB of RAM and someone else already reported this as potential source of problems. Actually I realised it when, during one of the numerous serial attempts, the PowerBook remained with a black screen and suddenly produced the frightening "breaking glass sound", i.e. issues with the memory. Well, that was thrilling since I did not realise immediately what it was and I never heard it before...
So this time the method was the following:
    - old disk removed from the Wallstreet and installed in a Firewire enclosure
    - created three disk images on another recent PB G4 from the three partitions of the old disk (OS9, OS X, documents)
    - new disk in FireWire enclosure, connected to the recent PB G4
    - created two partitions in Utility Disk: 1GB HFS+, therestGB HFS+ Journaled
    - installed new disk in Wallstreet
    - reduced Wallstreet RAM to 256MB
    - installed OS 9 from CD (and upgraded till 9.2.2) in the first 1GB partition together with XPF 4
    - removed the disk and reinstalled in the FW enclosure
    - cloned the old OS X disk image from the recent PB to the second big partition of the new disk
    - reinstalled on the Wallstreet, started in OS 9, set XPF options as last time (Use Old NDRVs), boot in OS X
    - copied all content of former third partition for documents in Documents
    - restored the RAM to 512MB
Therefore the result is OS 9 in the first 1GB partition and OS X in the second 73GB and something partition. XPF mildly complained about the disk not having been formatted on OS 9 but setting OS 9 as helper was enough to satisfy it.
I am not 100% sure, say 95, but I have the feeling that, even after reducing the RAM to 256MB, the method to clone the old OS 9 partition to the new one did not work in the sense that the Wallstreet remained stuck at the question mark. Definitely it did not work with 512MB.
    Summary (nothing new, just confirmations)
    - OS X does not require to be installed in the first partition
    - others (Tinkerman?) reported that this partition has to start in the first 8GB and not being included
    - OS X partition can be more than 8GB
    - watch out the RAM amount during installation (here it worked with 256MB but others reported 192 as maximum)
Hope this will help someone else.
    Regards,
    Giulio

Another installation procedure (still, similar to the previous one).
    - reduce RAM to 256MB (some says 192 is better but now for me it was not feasible)
    - with OS 9 CD: partition the disk,1GB/around 75GB, both HFS+ (there were few hiccups and I had to try more than once since the initialisation was failing and eventually I got a sort of ghost 5KB partition "for free")
    - install OS 9 from CD to the 1GB partition
    - update OS 9 to 9.2.2 through the installers
    - mount disk in external enclosure connected to another system: initialise the around 75GB partition as HFS+ Journaled and cloned the old OS X partition to such partition (or install it for the ones that do not have such OS X partition ready)
    - reinstall the disk into the Wallstreet and set up XPF (Use Old NDRVs); curious enough, here for the first time it said it could not boot from the second big OS X partition since it was "extending beyond the 8GB" or something similar still just choosing OS 9 as helper solved the issue
    - restore the maximum RAM
    - reboot in OS X
The OS 9 installation was done with the USB PCMCIA inserted and the USB mouse inserted in it. I do not know whether this was the solution (since also the previous time I selected all the USB additional extensions during OS 9 installation) but this time at the 9.1 update the mouse was recognised, not before, and it kept working since.
The Wallstreet just boots in OS X each and every time unless instructed to do differently through XPF.
The magnetic sensor issue still occasionally shows (apparently it needs "some time" or the Wallstreet just boots/wakes up nicely if just switched off or set to sleep). I will try to create some magnetic shield as already reported somewhere. Alternatively removing the two bays and waiting some five minutes or so does the trick.
What remains a bit unclear to me is the use of a magnet close to a hard disk, something I would consider the source of all evils if not properly done. I will study more, test and hopefully solve the issue.
    Thanks,
    Giulio

  • PowerBook G4 RAM Upgrade, suggestions

    Hello there Apple Masters
My PowerBook G4 is relativly slow since the insertion of a new hardrive. The last one, died sundely on me, and needed to be replaced. After that, for some reason, the computer is very slow. I am running Leopard and while running any kind of application, is soooo slow. I also notice a funky sound while the disk is spinning...
Anyways, so I was suggested to upgrade my RAM which is onnly 512MB. Before, I didn't need more, the machine runned really nicely/___sbsstatic___/migration-images/migration-img-not-avail.png But now it seems otherwise. I was suggested to upgrade to 2GB, but I have only found 1GB of RAM on the online shop where I would like to order this product.
My questions would be, could you take a look at this model and tell me if this is the RAM that is compatible with my PowerBook G4, 17", 1GHz: RAM 1024MB Kingston Qualitätsspeicher, 333 MHz, PC2700 SODIMM Memory Module für Apple iBook G4, Powerbook G4.
If not, which one should I look for.
Here also a link to where you can see the picture (althoug I am not sure it actually looks like that):
    http://shop.cancom.de/online/52/wa/TendiDL/getArticleDetail?id=529404&shop=canco m&wosid=uYtjxa2X60iviUtu9cJbJg#
Sorry if the website is in German, but I am currently working in Germany and need to buy the stuff here
I also would like to know if I can install this type of RAM my self, or if I have to have someone do it for me. Where can I see a manual on how to do this?
    Thank you for your ideas

Apple specs and Do it yourself guides got pulled probably...
Probably not a good idea to restore files, they could have trouble. May have been backed up while there was a problem and data corruption.
As for Disk Warrior, it is commercial product by Alsoft. Another choice is your AppleCare TechTool Deluxe or Micromat's commercial version TechTool Pro, but you do need 3rd party utility to take it from where Apple Disk Utility leaves off.
A lot of tips on memory upgrades to do yourself from a number of sites.

  • Mac Mini (mid 2010) horizontal screen flicker after new RAM installation

Hi, trying to help someone fix their mid 2010 mac mini here.
The model he bought came with 4GB of RAM; but he upgraded and put 8GB of RAM in. (the kingston variety KVR1066D3D4R7S/4GI 4GB DDR3-1066 I think)
Before the RAM there were no display problems, after installation small horizontal lines of flickering would appear around every minute or so. The screen is a Samsung 2333 Syncmaster connected via the mini display adaptor.
We've tried the display and adaptor in a Macbook Pro late 2008 and no problems so we think we've eliminated that variable. We've just gone through the screen calibration in Sys Prefs and we're still seeing if that's fixed it. We'll also try adjusting the refresh rate but we're doubtful.
    Any ideas?

Apple support advised me to use RAM sold by Apple ($400 for 8GB).
I have 2x4GB hynix modules (by the way I had hynix stock modules in my mini) and if I mix 4GB(not Apple) and 1GB(Apple) it works just fine. It's obvious that 2 different modules won't work in dual channel BUT Xbench shows no difference in performance in any configuration. I tested different configurations: 2x4GB(not apple memory), 2x1GB(stock modules), 1Gb+4GB(stock and non stock) all of them show very similar performance +/- 3%.
This mean that mac mini doesn't use dual-channel memory mode (( There's also a chance that Xbench shows wrong results regarding RAM performance but to me, it seems very unlikely.

  • Express Server/RAM Installation

    Hi All,
I have downloaded the oes6301nt from technet.oracle.com. I am trying to install express server on a NT 4.0 Workstation. The Oracle universal installer is not showing the Relational Access Manager product when you select Oracle Express Server 6.3 + Custom installation.
However it did install the relational access admin and RAA query statistics modules.
    Any Suggestions?

    Hi Ranjan and Dilys
Guess what? Even though earlier today, I put in a posting that I had no clue where exactly RAM is(see below) I just found out from where you can get RAM. This is so crazy. You need to install Oracle express client 6.3. When you are installing, you will see it will show you 4 options. The 3rd option is Express Administrator Install option. RAM, for some reason, is under that option. But now I am not sure if the express developer option and the administrator option will function smoothly if installed on the same machine/Oracle home. Since I just found this out and its Friday night, I wont know if the 2 will work from the same machine or not till Monday(ie. connecting to an Express Server on a different machine and Oracle DB on a 3 rd machine).
So good luck to the 2 of you and keep me posted how it goes.
    Thanks

  • DVD RAM installation

    Hi everyone,
    I have a BW G3 (listed below) running 10.2.x
I have a couple of questions: first of all, I just got a DVD RAM drive off a guy in town here for $5. I know the guy, so it's a good drive, he said it's in fine working condition. It's the Apple Model #LF-D111A
Anyway, I haven't attempted installing it yet - it's a simple IDE drive, but I have a couple of questions before I do.
First of all, he pulled this unit out of a G4, and it's listed as a G4 unit, but I read online that it can be installed in a BW G3 as long as you have the "decoder card" whatever that is! So first question: What is the decoder card? Do I have it? How do I get it? Is it worth it?
My second question is I plan to install OS Tiger on my system after I get the DVD RAM drive installed. Do you forsee any problems with this installation? Will I have to reinstall my program files?
    Thanks so much!
    Tim

The decoder module piggybacked to the B&W G3's OEM ATI Rage 128 graphics card. The earliest versions (1.x) of the Apple DVD Player program relied on hardware (MPEG-2) decoding, for viewing DVD movies. By the time that OS X shipped with newer Macs having faster CPUs, the Apple DVD Player program was able to use software decoding, not requiring the hardware decoder.

  • RAM installation question

Hi, I am upgrading a mid-2011 iMac from its original 4GB (2x2) of Ram to 16GB (4x4x4x4) of RAM.
--After i replaced the old 4GB with the new 16GB, I attempted to start the computer and was greeted with the dreaded Beeping that so many of written about.
-- However, when I replaced the old 4GB with 8GB (4x4) and used the SAME PORTS that the old RAM had previously occupied, everything worked fine.
--BUT, when messing around to try to understand the problem, I experienced the Dreaded Beeping with the 8 GB configuration as well.
--Also, when I tried to start the computer with  new 8 GB RAM installed, but without the protective metal plate that covers the RAM ports, etc., the computer would not start at all.
Currently, the computer is running well on its new 8GB of RAM installed in the two ports previously occupied by the old RAM, with the outer plate re-attached.
So... the fact that my computer works with the new 8 GB of RAM, but has also not worked with the exact same 8 GB installed in the same ports leads me to hypothesize that possibly my problem is one of installation.  This hypothesis is further supported by the fact that I had a small amount of resistance re-installing the metal plate that covers the RAM ports after I installed the 8GB, and I had even more resistance when I had the 16GB installed (It bulged).
I would like to install the remaining 2 sticks of RAM into the two remaining ports and have 16GB of RAM, which is the maximum suggested by apple.
Is is possible that I am just not pushing forcefully enough when I install the RAM?
Also, is it possible that the two ports that have been sitting unused need some sort of extra cleaning or lubrication?(i vacuumed out all visible fuzz, dust, etc.)?
I have watched a video on how to install the RAM, and am confident that I am doing so basically correctly.  Any help would be much appreciated.

It's very unlikely that RAM from Crucial was bad when delivered.  If, you purchased the correct RAM from Crucial, and you were careful and did not expose it to ESD when installing, and you fully inserted the RAM, then it should run great.
One easy way to determine if you have a bad stick at this point is to try two at a time in the slots that you know are working for you.  If those two work then try the other two.  If they work then all four sticks are fine.  If not, then use the process of elimination to determine the bad one.
If they all work, then either you are not seating them fully in the remaining slots, or, one or more of the other slots have a physical problem.  Try installing all of the RAM sticks again and then look at them all side by site.  They should all look uniformly inserted at the same level.  None should be bulging out on the ends or in the middle.  They should all look like they are fully seated.  In some cases it does take considerable force to fully seat a stick (the amount of force required is unfortunately relative and you will only be confident in the pressure that is required once you have done it on many machines).  Just make sure to brace you hands so you are applying pressure straight into the slot with your thumbs.

  • Powerbook 520 RAM work in a Powerbook 1400?

    hi,
After reading both the Powerbook 1400 and the Powerbook 520 Technical information manuals it says that they both use the same type of RAM (low power DRAM). My Powerbook 1400 has 24MB of RAM and my Powerbook 520 has I think 12MB of RAM. Can I add those 12MB of RAM to my Powerbook 1400?
    Thanks

    Apple Rules
From any practical vantage point, no. The PB500 expansion cards are a different size (wider than the space available in the 1400, and not stackable), and have different connectors from PB1400 cards and connectors. That both kinds of card use low-power DRAM is the only similarity.
PB500 series 'Books use PSRAM. PB1400s use TSOP lowprofile RAM chips.

  • Modifying Powerbooks? RAM, Hard drive? Worth it?

    Hi everyone!!
Basically I have a Powerbook G4, 12" that I bought new when it came out. So is about 3-4 years old i'd say, can't remember exactly - and I've had to previously replace the CD-RW/DVD drive a year after the warranty ran out.
My dilemma is that I want a faster mac, but don't really have the cash to buy a new one. I was wondering how you go about improving things like speed, i'm presuming thats RAM? And also increasing my hard drive,as my mac is infuriatingly slow at times. So is it worth the time, effort and money changing all these things, like how would it cost? Or should a buy a new one either macbook or pro?
I hope i've explained it! Plus the **** keys are coming off it argh - to date i've lost Q,O,G,H, you don't realise how many words have an 'O' until you lose it!! haha
Thanks in advance for your help
    Tday - mac goddess

Wow - you're running CS and Tiger in 256mb - no wonder you see things slow down. Looking at your page ins/outs, if page outs are greater than 3163 (10% of page ins), you can use more memory for what you run. In your case, page outs are greater than 3163, so you can use more memory.
Apple says the max memory capacity in your system is 640MB, which you'd get by adding 512MB (128MB are already on the logic board). So, for example, adding 512MB of memory would cost, from Crucial £30 with VAT. Crucial's UK web site is at http://www.crucial.com/uk/ . To see how to change the memory, see http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Mac/PowerBook-G4-Al-12-Inch/RAM/53/2 .
Replacing the internal hard drive is not difficult, but it is technically tedious. You can also view how to do that at the ifixit.com site. You'd probably want to pay someone to do that. You can find an Apple Authorized Service Provider at http://www.apple.com/uk/buy/locator/ . I'd recommend not having an Apple store do the upgrade, as they typically keep your old hard drive. An Apple Authorized Service Provider could do the upgrade for you, instead of an Apple store. In this case, you could have a faster drive installed internally, then put your existing hard drive in an external case and use it to backup files.
Another option would be to not upgrade your internal drive, rather, buy a fast external drive, and use that as your primary drive. It would have to have a firewire 400 connection, so you could boot your system from it. An example of what you could use can be seen at http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/firewire/on-the-go where a 60GB to 80GB 7200rpm drive costs around $135-$140 (about £70). Doesn't have to be physically larger, and some external drives are larger (especially if they use a 3.5" drive inside). If you go this route, your existing internal drive could then become your backup drive.
Many vendors offer external drives, so you can find something locally (OWC does ship worldwide, if you ordered from them). While there are various chipsets in the external drives, if they use any of the Oxford chipsets, they'll work fine with your mac. When you buy an external drive from one of the hard drive vendors, like Western Digital or Seagate, they don't specify a chipset, however, they do say they work with a mac.
So you can spend £30 on memory and £70 on an external hard drive (or around £40 for an internal hard drive and perhaps another £40? for someone to install it) to spruce up your system. I haven't seen Leopard specs yet, however, as Network 23 pointed out, if the 867Mhz CPU is gating your system performance, the fix is a new system, and you probably already know that Macbooks start at £699.
Oh, and on the keys, have you contacted your local Apple store to see if they can replace them?
A bit of a lengthy response - please post back with any other questions.

  • G4 powerbook older ram?

    Hey guys and gals..
ok i've been reading some info on the site and found out that you could put other memory in yoru powerbook. but you all wre talking about newer powerbooks.. i have a
    12" G4 1ghz Powerbok
    256 MB (built in)
    l2 cache 512 kb
    bus speed: 133mhz
    machine model number? powerbook6,2
any the manual says i have to use:
    DDR SO-DIMM
    1025mb
    200-pin
    PC2700 DDR 266 TYPE RAM
So my question is this... do i have to use this ram specifically?
if not then what other types of memory can i get? i heard that maybe 333 instead of 266 would work.. is that true? will i see a difference?

You usually can use faster RAM then what your machine calls for as long as it fits into the slots, but you won't get any performance boost from the faster RAM. Slower RAM won't work in a computer which expects a faster module.

  • Powerbook 3400c-ram or computer issue?

hi everyone, a while back i bought a powerbook 3400c for cheap on craigslist. great machine but when i looked at the info i saw it had only 16 megs of ram. i checked ebay to upgrade and i almost fainted at the prices for 'vintage' ram. so found a 64mg ram card (ended up being the wrong kind-doh) and opened up the mac. lo and behold there was a 128 mg card already installed-but the powerbook doesn't recognize it. i tried removing and reseating it- no go. i know the obvious solution would be to get another ram card and test that but given the ram prices and the fact that i don't know if it's a computer or ram card issue, is there something i could try to test/solve/workaround before i shell out the big bucks? thanks in advance

Something to try. Remove the RAM module and using a rubber eraser, gently erase the RAM electrical contacts. There may be a corrosive film on the contacts that is preventing electrical contact.
Don't know what OS is on the PB, but you could try using DIMM First Aid (runs on OS 9 & below).

  • PowerBook G4 ram problem?

So I got a PBG4 DLHR model with the 1.67Ghz processor. I got this from a friend with a cracked screen. It had no ram. So I bought some ram (2gb) and it won't boot. I know I bought the right ram, and I know about the bottom ram slot not working on some models. So here is what is happening after I hit the power button:
Both ram sticks installed = 1 beep (no ram installed)
1 ram stick in either slot = 3 beeps (no good banks)
    Ram is: Samsung 1GB PC2-4200 1Rx8 DDR2 533mhz 200 pin
I am not sure if this particular ram is just not working or what. I know the systems max ram is 2gb with 2 1gb sticks. I would try putting this ram in a working system but I don't have any friends who do. So what do I do? I was hoping to use this for school.

The RAM must be designed for that age of Powerbook down to the season/time of year.
Not all 1GB PC2-4200 1Rx8 DDR2 533mhz 200 pin are designed for the Powerbook.  Both http://www.crucial.com/ and http://www.macsales.com/ will tell which are once you
use http://www.everymac.com/ to help identify which one you have.
Note: you can't upgrade the machine past 10.5.8, and you can't sync with higher than iOS 5.x.

  • Can I switch my PowerBook G4 RAM into my Power Mac G5?

I have both a Power Mac G5 and a PowerBook G4. The G5 only has 1GB of RAM. Can I take the RAM out of my G4 and put it into my G5? Also, the G4 only has Tiger while the G5 has Leopard. Can I get the newer OS onto the PowerBook? (Power Mac has a back drive.)

You need to use a proper retail install disk. The was a period in the OS9 days when you could drag-n-drop an OS but not since OSX came out. Plus a notebook needs OSX components not needed by a desktop and probably not present on your G5.
Before buying a retail 10.5 disk, make sure of your G4's variant (which we don't know yet). Early G4 PowerBooks made before November 2002 are constrained to OS 10.4.11.

  • Another RAM installation goes unrecognized....

Have now made 3 attempts to install 2 new 1 GB sticks into Power Mac G5 Dual Core 2.0. There are two 1 GB sticks already in there that are working fine; these shipped with the computer. The new ones are said to be DDR2-533 PC2-4200 240 pin DIMM, unbuffered, non-ECC. They are made by Centon.
    In Diagnostics, I read:
    Power On Self-Test:*
    *Last Run: 1/25/08 4:09 PM*
    *Result: Failed*
    *Failure type: Memory*
    *Memory slots: DIMM2/J6900, DIMM3/J7000*
The memory slots read simply as empty in Memory.
Apple Hardware Test apparently was not supplied to me with my 10.4 disk set.
I just sent out a feeler to Centon to see about compatibility----their site has a 'memory matchmaker' click-through that suggests the ones I bought are correct for my computer....the packing slip that came with them suggests some potential differences or confusion....for example, the ones that shipped with the Mac are "2GB 533 DDR2 Non-ECC SDRAM", Centon packaging says nothing about the SDRAM part....additionally their packing slip says the sticks they sent are "267 Mhz" each although they are boxed and sold as 533 Mhz....
Anything I can do on my own to test or reinstall while I wait for a reply from them? anyone have experience, good or bad, with Centon products?
    Thanks
    EF

    Hi
Apple Hardware Test apparently was not supplied to me with my 10.4 disk set.
The Apple Hardware Test is inside the same Tiger installation disc. You must restart your machine from the installation disc (pressing the C key) and you'll find it.
Ussually you must press hard the DIMMs to get them fine seated.
Besides that, you can try reset the NVRAM and PRAM:
