Powerbook G4 slightly bent in the middle

OK, so I have my laptop on a little bag attached to the handle of my carryon at the airport. The carryon falls over, and it looks lilke the metal handle put a little bind in the middle of my G4.
It's almost imperceptible, except when you close the laptop (the corners aren't tight anymore) and the thin strip of metal between the little light up button and that plastic edging before the keyboard/touchpad top part begins is bent outward about a 1/4 inch.
The G4 seems to be working fine (infact I'm at the airport as I write this), but I'm worried about consequences down the line.
Should I take this to the Apple store and get it looked at? Should I get the case repaired? Anything I should be looking out for? Should I just relax?

Hi andertoons --
Different people likely will have differing views on this, but my 2¢ is that you should just relax and consider the ding to be a sort of mark of character, a battle scar proudly earned by a trusty (and hopefully reliable) comrade in (business) arms. I've had my PB for some 19 months now and it's got many such scars -- all a testament to the brave and frequent combat its seen me through.
The ding itself, being user caused and most likely cosmetic damage only, won't (as I think your question seems to indicate) be covered under Apple's original or extended warranty (the AppleCare Protection Plan). From what you've described, the only reason that I could see to have it looked at would be that if you are still covered by either of those warranties and you might want to get the ding noted officially so that it wouldn't later be seen as evidence of user-caused damage in the event something went wrong later, un-related to the ding, that would otherwise be covered.
Alternatively, you could, on your own ticket, get the case repaired, but that wouldn't be cheap and would entail loss of use (albeit not for too long a time, presuming the part was in stock). That's really, to my mind, just a matter of personal preference, and I wouldn't as long as the ding doesn't impair any of the PB's functions.
My vote: just relax and move on to the next battle....

  • Has anyone found the screen to be slightly "dipped"/concave in the middle?

    Hello,
I've got a 32GB iPad, and I am very much enjoying it. One thing i've noticed is that the LCD screen underneath the glass digitizer seems to be ever so slightly dipped, or concave in the middle.
It doesn't seem to cause any issues, but I was wondering if this was normal. When you look direct on at the iPad, you don't see it; only at an angle do you notice it.

Yes I have the Ipad 64bit Next generation and quite unhappy the display is concave. Not just the OS but web browsing also.

  • Can't get past the white screen with the grey apple in the middle

When I start up my PowerBook G4 I first get a gray screen with a small white box in the middle of the screen that contains planet earth. After this icon has flashed 14 times it disappears and then a small file appears in its place. Inside this file folder is an alternating flashing question mark and the Finder icon. After a few seconds this icon disappears and the screen turns white with an apple in the middle. I can not get the computer to do anything after that.
My problem is I got the computer from my mother and she can not find any of the disks that originally came with it.
Does anyone have any useful suggestions?
    Thanks

Unfortunately, I just got off the phone with Apple Care and they do not carry them anymore. They're recommending I upgrade the system to Leopard. They want $120 for the disks. Any other suggestions?

  • "Bright Spot" in the middle of the display.

    Hello...
A few months ago, my iBook's screen appears to have developed a "bright spot" closer to the middle of the screen. This bright spot appears to be a vertical line that vaguely resembles an exclamation mark. It's definitely not a group of dead or stuck pixels, but it's looks a lot like the "white spots" that some early 15" Aluminum Powerbooks had, maybe not as intense: http://www.apple.com/support/powerbook/displayprogram/
I might want to ask for a screen replacement. But my problem here is: I bought this iBook when it came out last summer in Canada. Right now, I’m not in Canada, and I asked the local Apple Service Center about the warranty. They said that they don’t cover any Mac that wasn’t bought from the region they belong to. This contradicts Apple’s international warranty for its portables.
My question here is: Is my iBook’s screen eligible for replacement in the first place? If it is, how am I supposed to deal with the local Apple Service Center?
    Thanks in advance!

    Hi Voidness,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions
I don't know if it will be covered by Apple's One (1) Year Limited Warranty. It says,
"Apple or its Apple Authorized Service Providers will provide warranty service on products that are tendered or presented for service during the Warranty Period, as permitted by law. If the product is portable, meaning that it can operate independently without a power cord, you may obtain warranty service worldwide. However, service will be limited to the options available in the country where service is requested."
You may want to call Apple and see what an Apple representative says.

I was charging my iPod touch last night and in the middle of the charge, it stopped and gave me the "This cable or accessory is not certified and may not work reliably with this iPod."  It'll do this even when I plug the charger into the port but not to any power source.  It's now almost dead and I really need my iPod to charge. I've already tried resetting and clearing the debris out of the port.  I'm not sure what else to do.

  • When typing my mac keeps highlighting and deleting stuff or it jumps back into an old word and starts typing in the middle of it  what is going on??

When typing my mac will highlight words and totally delete them or it will jump back into something I already typed and start typing in the middle of that word... just started doing this about three weeks ago.  Any idea what is up???

    Found the problem! Very weird!

    http://ask.metafilter.com/145408/The-cursor-on-my-MacBook-jumps-around-like-craz y
Wow! I would have never thought to look at the battery! This problem started for me after I closed the lid of my '08 MacBook Pro last night. This morning when opened ithe lid (which seemed a little difficult) and I started typing the problem was there. I read a bunch of similar threads but nothing helped (Tap to Click...). Then I saw the above from Macrumors and looked at my battery. One side is slightly bulging and is putting pressure on the trackpad bar from below. I can avoid the problem by typing with my hands off the surface of the Mac, suspended above the keyboard, but the battery needs replacing I guess. It must have overheated when I closed the lid last night, though it should have slept properly, sometimes Chrome or Flash running in Chrome won't let it sleep. I usually just manually 'sleep' it from the Apple menu without closing the lid.
    Side note:
I just had the whole MacBook refurbished by Apple for $300 a year or so ago, but they didn't change the battery then. Still a great deal...new display, logic board, display board, ram... I swapped the original 200GB HDD for a larger hard disk (750GB) from iFixit. It's been running great ever since but I have noticed some laggy text entry recently or since switching to Mavericks...maybe related to the battery starting to fail.

  • My Powerbook doesn't load past the grey apple screen

my powerbook doesnt load past the grey apple strart up screen, after that it sais I need to reboot my computer.
I've tried to boot from my install disk to get disk utillity to run, but the computer will crash again at the gray screen, before it starts running from the cd.
I've also tried to reset PRAM and NVRAM and PMU, it all won't work, and crash on the gray screen.
I dont care about loosing stuff, cause its just been formatted 3 days ago, it started crashing first when my laptop was in the middle of its software (maybe firmware) update.
help! is there any way to get life back to my laptop?
    thank you.

    sorry, a correction
my computer does start up from the instal disk (finally), and the Disk Utility program sais there are no errors, (in green).

  • My powerbook won't load past the grey apple logo screen

I had been away on business for a few weeks and yesterday I decided to run the latest updates for my powerbook. In the middle of it the computer froze for what I think is the first time since I bought it 2 years ago. I ended up having to shut the computer down with the power button. When I turned it on it wouldn't and still won't advance past the grey apple logo screen with the progress indicator. It just sits there for hours on end if I let it.
So far I've tried the following, all to no avail.
Booting in safe mode I get the same result.
    Zapping the Ram
    Resetting the PMU
Reinstalling OS X, during which the computer either randomly shuts down or goes to sleep and then shuts down and requires me to reset the PMU in order to start again.
Running the hardware diagnosis. I did this once and it froze during the logic board test, 1 minute 6 seconds in to it.
Anyone have any ideas that don't involve spending 900 dollars on a logic board? Thanks a lot for any help.

joeuu, thanks for the reply. i checked the airport and the ram and both seem to be seated properly.
i ran the quick hardware diagnosis and it came back showing everything was fine.
when i ran the extended one i got more progress than i did the first time. it got to the RAM diagnosis (about 6:45 seconds in) and then froze - i let it sit like this for an hour and a half to make sure it was actually frozen.
i also tried to run the disc utility from the installation disc and it just sits there with the progress wheel spinning, but nothing else is going on.

  • How does one use the middle and right buttons in AIR without the cursor showing?

All I want to do is use all three botton clicks without the cursor showing (assistive technology situation). So I use Mouse.hide(). All works fine with the Left mouse button. With the middle and right buttons the cursor reappears as soon as the middle and right mouse is in the DOWN state (and stays visible until rehidden--see code). Are there Mouse parameters that could be added? (I can't find any such references.) Do I need to create a custom cursor Class that makes the cursor invisible at all times? Here is my simple AS 3 test code.

    Dear Tuttle and Tom:
You both sent me to the appropriate place. I downloaded the instruction file (PDF). Many thanks.
Incidentally, I then downloaded the upgrade offered at the top of that page (from v3.2 to v3.2.4) but after ±90% of the necessary time needed, it shut down with a "Failed to Mount" message (whatever that might mean). It took more than 28 minutes to download that much even though I'm using DSL! Have either of you upgraded to v3.2.4 with or without difficulty?
Thanks again for your right-on assistance.

  • Air Tunes went dead in the middle of a song

My airtunes has been working fine for a long time, even after downloading itunes 7.
For no apparent reason, the airtunes stopped in the middle of a song. Now when I try to connect it, it times out.
My computer is able to find my wireless internet network but for some reason can now longer play music through it.
I have done a soft reset. I have done all the things that have been listed here to do.
Nothing works. Somebody please help before I throw out my powerbook.

Have you played with any of the iTunes Preferences. Check out its Advanced tab, and maybe uncheck and check some menu items.
Also, you might want to check with Airport Admin Utility. Play with the Music tab.

OK, for a quick demo, I recycle a class I made for something else (WordDisplay)...

  • 15" Powerbook Display seems larger than the physical 15"LCD screen

I am not sure whether this is the right place to post this, but my Powerbook display is acting very strangely. This occurred just after I viewed a large photo in my mail application (by clicking "view slideshow"). The photo was sent to me by a trusted colleague so I don't think any funny business is going on.
After viewing the photo and then closing the window, I was surprised to see my desktop "sliding" around when I moved the mouse. It is as if my physical display is smaller that the resolution given in the Display preferences window (which I checked is set for 1280x854). So for example, right now the top Apple Menu is slightly off my LCD top edge.
The other feature is that the text is no longer crisp. This is consistent I think with my display driver (ATI Mobility Radeon 9700) not mapping to the full pixel resolution of the LCD display.
I have never seen anything like this before, even after hooking up to external displays (like a Dell 1680x1050 LCD) or 800x600 LCD projectors. Also have no clue how to "reset" things. Usually a reboot would fix something like this.
Any clues. I did just upgrade to the last Tiger version (10.4.11), so I am not sure if this is related at all to that.

I just did one check. I logged into another user account on my Powerbook, and in that account the display was just fine, so whatever is going on here is some software setting in my own account. However I am not sure how to change back to "normal". Any ideas where display settings in the hardware accelerator might be stored. Playing with the Preferences Display window doesn't make any change.

  • The screen on my ipod touch is white all over and black in the upper right hand corner only with color dots and lines run to the left hand side but stop in the middle. how do i fix it?

right now it is the middle of april and i bought the ipod at the beging of Agust the year befor so it still has not been a year. currently it is thursday and the screen changed to the white and black corner on the monday earlier in the week (so 4 days ago). i had just broken up with my gril friend and we were fighting. in anger i through my ipod at the wall. i was aiming for my pillow on my bed so it would hit something soft but i missed and it hit the hard concrete wall in my room. when i looked at my ipod it had turn itself off and when turn on the screen was white with a little black in one corner. i have tryed to restart it by holding down the power and home button till it restarted but the screen only got brighter and then eventually went back the the brightness it was before and turn off. i can still turn the screen on but cant unlock. i know it is still working cause my alram still goes off in the morning. the ipod is a 4th generation ipod touch 16 GB memory and is black. can this be fixed at home on my own or do i have to take it in to apple. can apple even fix it or is my ipod past the point of repair. any advice would be nice. thanks in advance.
