Powerbook G4 software

Hello,
I know this has been a hotly discussed topic but any help would be greatly appreciated.
I have a powerbook G4 and it's happily synced to my iPhone. Unfortunately my iPhone packed in and I had to have it restored at the Apple Shop. Now all the new software on the iPhone means I can't sync it with my powerbook. I don't think my powerbook is capable of further updates so how do I access all my iTunes purchases?
Help

Well here is the problem, Mobileme features going to the Cloud on June 12, 2012.  This article links to Apple reference points of what should remain after then: explain what features remain https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-2551 If any of those features are needed after then that only can be accessed by the Cloud features of Lion, getting a newer Mac will be needed.  If you can settle with the features that remain compatible in iCloud after June 12, 2012, then making sure you have at minimum an 867 Mhz (1 Ghz is higher) Powerbook and Mac OS X 10.5.8 and iTunes 10 will be needed.  Here's what's needed for Mac OS X 10.5:

If uncertain what you can do with your model iPhone without iCloud or Mobileme, ask in the iPhone forum.

See this Apple note. You'll need the original OS X disks that should have come with the system or a retail copy of OS X.

  • Sick powerbook after software update

I've had this G4 Powerbook for nearly 3 years now without a glitch or a crash. Friday night I set the latest Apple software update running (iTunes & Quicktime)and popped out. Saturday morning, went to use my PB and found power off, the cord was not properly connected and battery had died during update. Turned PB on, and after about 5 mins of grey apple screen (quite normal after update), im greeted with a black terminal screen, asking for login and password. After entering this, computer boots into OS X but is behaving very oddly, missing graphics from windows in different apps, can't attach documents to emails, scroll bars on safari windows don't load, and woefully slow dock animation etc.
Tried disk utility but it won't repair the HD as the repair option is greyed out - apparently this means that the volume doesn't have OS X installed, but it clearly does!
The only thing i can think to do is backup all my data and restore the system all the way back to 10.3. Only snag here is that I've lost my restore disc, all i have is the tiger upgrade disc. I'm worried that my trusty old friend is terminally sick, can anyone help revive her? Thanks.

    Welcome to the Apple discussions.

You can't do a disk utility repair from the volume you've booted from, which is why the repair option was greyed out. If you can boot from your Tiger upgrade disks, then you could run disk utility repair.
Since the interrupted software upgrade is causing your issues, download and install the 10.4.11 combo update from http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macosx10411comboupdateppc.html . This should get your operating system back to where it should be. Then you can reinstall any updates.

I have an iMac with an operating system OS X 10.2 and a PowerBook g4 with an operating system Os X 10.3.3. • Can I run OS 10.2 on a PowerBook G4 1.67 GHz?

I need to use an old OS9 application but can't run it on my MacBook Pro. So I got my old PowerBook G4 out, which is running OS 10.5.8 and OS 9.2 on it. It appears 10.5.8 won't run OS9. So I tried to do a clean install of 10.2 from a PowerBook G4 software install disk...although I'm not sure if this disk is for the 1.67 GHz or my even older PowerBook G4 Titanium.
The long and short of it is that the PB G4 1.67 GHz won't read the OS 10.2 system install disk - using the C key on restart.
Does anyone have any ideas how I can backward install to OS 10.2?
    Regards

Furthermore, you have to find the correct Powerbook G4 restore discs to restore 10.3.7 through 10.4.2 onto a partition or Firewire hard drive, and then use the Mac OS 9 restore installer from those discs to install 9 so Classic can run in the background on 10.3.7 through 10.4.11. Starting with 10.5 Classic could not run. Only a very few Powerbook G4s had boot access to Mac OS 9 while 10.5 was installed:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1379979
The rest required 10.4.11 or less to be installed on a Firewire hard drive or Partition, and 9 restored from the prebundled discs that came with the Mac in question. And for those only 9 as a Classic environment without most of the drivers would run.

  • Correct Install of software on new Hard Drive?

Hello. The hard drive crashed in my powerbook G4. First time ever. I have several disks to reinstall and get the g4 running again, but not sure which disks I should use and in what order.
    I have:
    Mac OSX disk
    Powerbook G4 Software restore 1 of 3
    2 of 3
    3 of 3
    Powerbook G4 Applications
I installed the new drive physically, created and erased a partion on the new 120gb drive, but should I use the Max OSX disk to install and get it running or the restore? What are the benefits of using one over another?

    therym:
    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
First, I suggest that you consider upgrading to a later version of OS X, like Panther or Tiger. OS X 10.1 (Puma) is essentially a Beta version of OS X and is not very stable. You will find one of the later versions will run very well on your new HDD.
Whichever OS you decide to use, you must first format and erase the HDD, then install OS X. You must begin with Disk 1. Here are step by step directions.
Formatting, Partitioning Erasing a Hard Disk Drive
Warning! This procedure will destroy all data on your Hard Disk Drive. Be sure you have an up-to-date, tested backup of at least your Users folder and any third party applications you do not want to re-install before attempting this procedure.
Boot from the install CD holding down the "C" key.
    Select language
    • Go to the Utilities menu (Tiger) Installer menu (Panther & earlier) and launch Disk Utility.
    • Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in left side bar.
    • Select Partition tab in main panel. (You are about to create a single partition volume.)
    • Select number of partitions in pull-down menu above Volume diagram.
(Note 1: One partition is normally preferable for an internal HDD.)
    • Type in name in Name field (usually Macintosh HD)
    • Select Volume Format as Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    • Click Partition button at bottom of panel.
    • Select Erase tab
    • Select the sub-volume (indented) under Manufacturer ID (usually Macintosh HD).
    • Check to be sure your Volume Name and Volume Format are correct.
    • Click Erase button
    • Quit Disk Utility.
Open installer and begin installation process.
    Installation Process
    • Open Installer and begin installation.
    • Select installation option
    • Choose to Customize and deselect Foreign Language Translations and Additional Printer drivers.
Optional: Check box to install X11 (Tiger) BSD Subsystems (Panther & earlier).
    • Proceed with installation.
    • After installation computer will restart for setup.
    • After setup, reboot computer.
    • Go to Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility.
    • Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in left side bar.
    • Select First Aid in main panel.
    • Click Repair Disk Permissions.
    • Connect to Internet.
    • Download and install Mac OS X 10.4.11 Combo update (PPC) (Tiger) or
    10.3.9 Combo Update (Panther) or
    10.1.5 Combo Update Puma.
    Computer will restart.
    • Repair Disk Permissions as previously.
    • Go to Apple Menu > Software Update.
    • Install all updates.
    Computer may restart after updates.
    • Go to Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility.
    • Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in left side bar.
    • Select First Aid in main panel.
    • Click Repair Disk Permissions.
Please do post back with further questions or comments.

  • Software Update - "Server unavailable. Try again later." ???

I've given my old 12" G3 iBook to a friend for his kid to use, and done a clean OS install today using the original OS X 10.3 CD's - but when connecting to Software Update, I've been getting the message "Server unavailable. Try again later." Problem?

    Hi,
I have lately used Mac OS X 10.5.8 on my PowerBook G4 15", but a few days ago I decided to try whether other OSs would be any faster.
First I tried Linux MintPPC 11 which was OK, but I gave up when I couldn't make the wireless work (missing firmware). Wired connection was OK. But there seemed to be more troubleshooting info for novices in Ubuntu so I tried it next because after a few hours Mint was a bit of a disappointment for me. YMMV.
So I then tried Linux Lubuntu 12.10 and it installed  OK via the live CD. After a while I even got the wireless to work after slapping a few terminal commands googled from the net (sorry, I don't quite know which command made it, so I wouldn't suggest this to a novice...). Ice Weasel web browser was quite snappy although youtube performance was quite poor.
I liked Lubuntu more than Mint but I didn't feel quite at home with Linux, so my next step was to re-evaluate Mac OS X 10.3 which I had used for a while before going to 10.5.
I was also disappointed that the Software Update doesn't work anymore for 10.3. Luckily I'm a pack rat so I had the old updates on CDs. But even then it took some trial and error which updates to apply and in which order (is there a list for this?). Anyway, my updates were as follows:
Mac OS X 10.3 DVD PowerBook G4 Software clean install (wired connection worked OK)
Mac OS X Update Combo 10.3.9
AirPort 4.2 10.3.9 (couldn't authenticate to the new AirPort without this)
    Security Update 2007-007 10.3.9
Java Update for Mac OS X 10.3.9 (I guess I could have omitted Java)
    Java Security Update 4.0
Java for Mac OS X 10.3 Update 5
    QuickTime 6.4 -> QuickTime 7.2.0 for 10.3.9
iTunes 4.0.1 -> iTunes 7.7 (iTunes Store won't work, though)
Mac OS X 10.3.9 is indeed somewhat faster than 10.5.8. But Safari is quite unstable (Google search results page crashes it so I switched to Bing) and renders some pages oddly. A local newspaper behind the paywall ignored the 5 articles per week which was a positive "bug" though.
But in the end I'm going to restore 10.5.8 from my Carbon Copy Cloner backup because I miss a few apps from it and don't have the time to find out workarounds and working versions of 3rd party apps I'm used to. (The PB's graphics board is failing so it has some artifacts on all OSs so I'm not going to put much time fine-tuning it).
BTW, on my Mac mini running OS X 10.8 I have planned to break my old habit of downloading updates and archiving them on DVDs because using the software update is so much easier to do.
But with this experience with the broken Software Update I might keep downloading and archiving the updates because they are more easily accessible in the future when the Software Updates for 10.8 are stopped. And who knows how long the updates are available on Apple's servers anyway?

  • Install OS9.2.2 on PowerBook Ti , using SW disk from earlier rev PowerBook?

I have a 1Ghz Ti PowerBook that i'd like to install OS 9.2.2 on to run and boot off. No classic or OSX on the HD.
However by mistake i stupidly threw out my PowerBook Ti software restore disks, and have been having trouble finding suitable disks which will install OS 9.2.2.
I've tried OS 9.1 retail disk but this does not work. I've been told that ONLY the software restore disks that came with the PB will work.
So far i've had no luck finding the disks, BUT i have managed to track down software restore disks from the prior rev PowerBook to the Ti.
This was the "Ivory" PowerBook which had 667Mhz, and 800Mhz G4 cpu's.
The disks for these computers have OS 10.1.4 and OS 9.2.2 on them.
(The Ti disks had OS 10.2.3 and OS 9.2.2 on them)
Anyone think these disks from the previous PowerBook model to mine will work in installing OS 9.2.2 on my machine?

Is the other portable computer's OS 9.2.2 software on a separate
disc from that model's OS X software installer? Usually that would
be something that would be installed after OS X, in many later Macs
which supported OS 9.2.2 either as dual-boot, or as Classic under X.
If you have a disc with the OS 9.2.2 system installer on it, from
another Mac, and it is not installed on another Mac, you may be
able to make use of it. And this, only if the computer is already
capable of using it (if OS9 Drivers were needed under X, they'd
have to be installed already, if booting 9 was expected) and then
you could try & install Mac OS 9.2 while the computer is running
OS X; not by the OS9 Installer. Use Pacifist utility, in demo mode.
(This software can also put an OS 9.2.2 install on an external HDD,
so it can be used with a computer that does not have OS X in it.)
That method will extract the bits from the 9.2 install disc & put them
together on the computer's desktop in OS X, and then install that in
to the computer. I've been able to extract and install an unused 9.2
system from an iBook G4 second disc, into a different model G4
iMac 800MHz and then dual-boot the iMac between Tiger & 9.2.2.
The iBook's version of OS 9.2.2 was from about 2005 or so, and
the iMac G4 800 was a few years older.
There may be some missing extensions and control panels in a
version of OS 9.2.2 that probably was intended as Classic in X.
But these will boot a computer, and can be installed via Pacifist.
However, the software user agreement may be in question; so
if you are experimenting and have discs that do not match your
computer, it may be possible to at least check this out.
Since my situation was different, in that I knew the OS 9.2.2 had
not been installed in any computer (was only on media disc but
not installed in the computer when new) I felt OK in my use of it
to experiment and used Pacifist (download) in OS X to do it.
Your mileage may vary; however once you have a working 9.2
system in a supported computer hardware, you can drag/drop
it and if not too slow, use it in an external hard disk drive. Later
USB2.0 Macs could probably use it from a flash drive in Classic.
I had fun times with many pre-9.2.2 systems, in that some
curious extensions and control panels could work in different
system builds, often unexpected moments of compatibility.
However, management of extensions in a boot 9.2.2 can be a
problem if the computer uses that system as Classic. OS X
does not see many of the older OS 9.2.2 bits under its control.
So a minimalist system 9.2 is what works in OS X's Classic.
And once, I had a system disc from an eMac G4 work
to install Panther 10.3 and OS 9.2 in an iBook G3 white.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Connecting my Powerbook to my iMac for internet sharing via airport

Thanks in advance for any help.
I have given up trying to get an answer to my Airport problem and NTL Virgin.
I now have my iMac connected to web via ethernet all okay for a week now so it can't be my connection that was the problem.

Hey Lennart, that link you gave was so helpfull, thanks a lot. I found this.
Follow these steps to reinstall iMovie, iPhoto, and iTunes from your Restore DVD disc:
Note: As the additional applications cannot be selectively installed, this will reinstall iMovie, iPhoto, iTunes, Acrobat Reader, iCal, and iSync.
Insert the Software Install and Restore DVD disc. Do not start up the computer from this disc.
From the Go menu, choose Go to Folder.
Do one of the following, depending on the type of computer the Restore DVD disc is for:
Power Mac G4 (FW 800) computer, type or copy and paste: /Volumes/PowerMac G4 Software/System/Installation/Packages
PowerBook G4 (12-Inch) computer, type or copy and paste: /Volumes/PowerBook Software/System/Installation/Packages

  • Thermal camera-photo booth

Hi, when using photo booth my "thermal camera" effect is not working. it has worked before, just recently when I went into the program to mess around, it had this problem. All the other effects are working fine...glow, comic, stretch, colored pencil, pop art, etc. ... all of those are great.
any ideas on what can i do to fix it up?..

    Hello, CaLiFuCa
i even isntalled it twice ... any other idea?
Did you do your reinstall with the "Pop Art" link to the Russian package (http://www.apple.ru/macosx/download/package/PhotoBooth1.2RU.dmg.zip) that Ralph linked above, or did you use the "Mac OS X Install Disc 1" that came with your MacBook?
If you have not tried using your "Install Disc", you might see if that will work for you. If you need help reinstalling only the applications (without reinstalling all your system software,) see the User's Guide booklet that came with your MacBook. For instance, in this version of the MacBook User's Guide, the instructions for reinstalling only the applications software appears on page 97.
If the Software Restore that came with your MacBook works like my PowerBook's software restore disk, you should be able to restore an individual software application like Photo Booth only. In worst case, you my have to reinstall ALL the applications software that came pre-installed on your MacBook.
I suggest that you have your Mac OS X Maintenance up to date and that you repair permissions both before and after you reinstall.
As Ralph post, if you have already used your own software reinstaller, I have no other suggestions other than to have your Mac checked by an Apple-Authorized Service Provider.

Hi all, i have a litte problem to find a solution about the filesystem device.
I need for my Gui application to change the icon of a Jtree because i use

I have used the FileSystemView method to get info about the device

    jpl,
    Thanks.
I was unable to access the superdrive on my G4 PB from the Pismo(which is the system I need reload OS.
Here's what I did and what showed.
I shut down both machines. connected FW. Powered up G4 w/<T> held down. Got target icon. Booted Pismo. HD showed on Pismo desktop. Loaded OS disk (DVD, that's why it wasn't showing drive prior ) Drive didn't show on Pismo. Tried DVD player which wouldn't work because of incompatibilty.
Shut down, booted.. G4 inserted OS DVD and set startup disk to that drive.
Shut down, booted G4 in target mode. Booted Pismo w/<opt> key and picked <disk> to boot from. could not see it on Pismo. It booted from the HD and not optical.
Now, I am confused. And have a potentially embarrassing question.
Is this the opposite of what I should have done? If I use Pismo as target disk(that's the one to update) why wouldn't I be able to update its system from my optical? The DVD I have says "PowerBook G4, Software Install and restore"..Does it matter that my Pismo is a G3?

  • Permissions repair/ disk utility

    Hello:
I believe I have a permissions repair problem as but I'm not entirely sure.
I'm very untechnical and somewhat shakey on my conclusions and how to
    proceed.
My computer slowed down this week after downloading freeware. I dumped all but one program. My space bar doesn't work properly as of last night, It only moves on the sides when hit hard. Most words just run together as I type.
Then today, I suddenly can't open Word documents. I forced quit and then restarted and then couldn't open PDF files either after working on the computer all day. Forced quit on Preview then couldn't open the hard drive as well. I was able to get into it through the applications icon.
Apple help suggests it's a permissions repair problem, but I'm confused. Went to disk utility and it says to install the OS X cd. I only have the PowerBook G4 Software Install and Repair disks. Are these one and the same?
I'd really appreciate any guidance on figuring this out and then how to proceed.
    Thanks so much.

    Hi Don:
Thanks for your help a couple of weeks ago. Just now attempting to solve.
Have used Mac Janitor and Cache Out X tonight and the inability to open files
on the desk top remains, as well not being able to open bookmarks in Safari in addition to having the same problem using the spacebar.
Wanted to ask some questions about your recommendations:
    1) When using Cache Out X, do I want to delete Caches from the User Domain
    as well as the Internet?
    2) Do I launch all of the icons in Onyx? The help menu was very confusing.
    3) I was unable to find Gullivers Link. Can you please explain this as well?
Additionally, while this note is correctly laid out while typing it, the preview page reveals line breaks that are not evident to me. This happens all the time
    in emails. Any ideas?
    Many thanks--
    Beth

  • Starts in Open Firmware.  No OS

    Short story,
When I turn on the Pismo, I get open firmware. I beleive the Hard Drive was formatted, and maybe partitioned eternally through a PC program called Macdrive. I have the software Restore Disc, and the software Install Disc. Neither will boot. I have reset the Pram, and Nvram through open firmware. All i get is a blinking '?' on Boot. How can i install the OS 9 back on this Mac?
    Long Story,
I was given two G3 Pismo's and told to wipe them clean, and donate them. They would not powerup, as they had been sitting a long time. I took the hard drives out, and cleaned them (deleted files that seemed private) with a PC program called Macdrive. I then learned to Unplug the Pram Battery and this would powerup the Mac, and then boot to OS 9.1. I can't remember, but I may have used Macdrive to Reformat and/or Repartition the Hard drive.
I then became hooked on Mac, and decided to keep one of them. Now when I power it up, I end up getting open firmware, and I cannot boot into OS 9.1 I'm not familiar with Mac Commands, so how can I boot from the Software CD?
Holding down C while powerup does not work.

    slow horse,
Until the issue of why you are booting into OF is solved, installing a fresh OS on the HD will not help; the boot into OF occurs long before any software loads. A normal cold start will produce the startup chime, then the raster (gray screen), then either a flashing '?' (no bootable volume found) or it starts to load the OS. I don't know why you are getting into OF. If the powerbook worked normally before you removed the HD, remove it again (and leave it out), then see if you can start to a normal startup chime and get to the flashing '?'. If you can, then see if it will boot a CD. If this is a successful test, then something may be wrong with the HD and/or HD ribbon cable.
However, assuming you solve the OF issue, this article discusses the differences between the Restore CD and the System Install CD. You should be able to boot to either barring any hardware problem.

If you cannot boot to the CDs, you can connect the Pismo to your iBook via FireWire Target Disk Mode:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=58583
You of course can also remove the HD, place it in an external FireWire or USB HD case and install software from the iBook.
If you have access to a FireWire CDRW or DVD burner, you can in most cases boot to a CD or DVD when connecting to the Pismo's FireWire port. Use the option key startup in this case.
If you connect to an iBook, you will not be able to use your Powerbook G3 Software CDs; the installer on the Powerbook CD sees an iBook, not a Pismo. If connected via FireWire Target Disk Mode, the Pismo is seen as just another external HD, nothing else. Depending on which version iBook you have, you can follow one of two procedures, and both will work regardless of how you connect the Pismo's HD to the iBook.
    1. If the Pismo's HD mounts on the iBook's desktop, use 9.x's Drive Setup to initialize the HD; this will also automatically update the HD driver. If using 10.x's Disk Utility to initialize the HD, make sure you check the option 'Install MacOS 9 HD Driver'; if you do not, your Pismo will not boot to 9.x. When initializing with 10.x, be SURE to select the topmost name in the list in the left column; this is the HD's model number...do not select the HD's user-given name.
    2. If the iBook has 9.1 > 9.2.2 installed, you should be able to drag-copy the System Folder from the iBook to the Pismo's HD. Be sure the System Folder is "blessed" after dragging it over to the HD: Open the System Folder icon, double-click the System file (suitcase), then close all windows.
    3. You can also use the iBook's System CDs to install software on the Pismo's HD. Depending on what version software came with the iBook:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=42929
If the above instructions are not the correct version, please let me know exactly what OS came with the iBook.

  • Problems with installing OS on new HDD.

    Hi Everyone,
I have been reading around the forums to see if I could find an answer to my problem. But I have only found bits and pieces and I would like a confirmed answer if possible.
I am new to the Apple world and I have very little experience in Apple software and so my apologies for any mistakes or my lack of knowledge.
I have been given a PowerBook G4 1.5 GHz with a faulty HDD and a collection of CD’s / DVD’s. I have just replaced the HDD with a 320GB WD Scorpio Blue WD3200BEVE and now I am trying to install the OS on the PB G4. This HDD is not formatted and is fresh from the supplier.
The discs I have been given:
Apple Hardware Test: SW Version 1.2.2 (PowerBook G4)
    PowerBook G4 - Mac OS 9 Install: 9.2.2
    PowerBook G4 - Mac OS X Install: 10.1.4
    PowerBook G4 - Applications: 1.1
    PowerBook G4 - Software Restore 1,2 & 3: Mac OS Version: 10.1.4, 9.2.2
    Airport Express: 4.0
I have tried the OS 9 & X Disc whilst pressing C on boot and the PB only displays a icon with a face / ?.
I have also tried booting up with the option key and I only have a sceen with 2 buttons a circular arrow and a (->).
The only disc I could get to show up on this screen was the AHT disc and this would only display an error such as not compatible with hardware / system.
Could someone please explain to me if I am doing something wrong or if you can see any other problems.
    Many thanks,
    Dan

    Hi,
Wow never heard of this problem before... Ok, do you hear any clicking noises in this hard drive? First of all, is the HDD new? If no, I suspect it might be faulty.. if its new, there could be some kind of firmware issue preventing it from being used on the mac..
Another test I would do.. try loading Tiger's cd and see if you can format the drive from there.. AH WAIT A MINUTE... How old is your G4 Powerbook? By the way I see it your powerbook might have a drive limitation of 128GB and lower.. thats most likely the issue. I noticed your install disks have 10.1.4 - THIS IS PUMA and I believe your powerbook precedes those powerbooks which have large drive support.. In this case, you will need intech's hi-cap tool in order to format and use the drive.
Powermac G4's and powerbooks before I think 2003 don't support large drive 48-bit LBA, so this could be the problem. Do you have the original hard drive which came with that? Use that as a test to prove my theory.. if the start up menu sees the drive, then the problem is that your G4 powerbook does NOT support large drive capacities greater than 128GB.
In order for you to use that drive, you WILL need Intech's hi-cap tool and I am not sure if they still make it.
